I hope you are having an amazing weekend so far! Let’s chat about yesterday for a second.
The only time I had to run yesterday was even earlier than my normal long run time. My dad offered to drive alongside me for the first few miles until it got light out so that I wouldn’t be alone in the dark. The first few miles of driving next to me turned into him doing all 14 miles with me and he even handed me gatorade along the way. Having a cold gatorade right when you need it and then handing it back to him without having to stop spoiled me big time. I hope this is a new tradition for us. I loved having him there.
The workout called for —> the first 2 miles @ 8:05 pace, the next 10 miles @ 7:10 and the last 2 @ 8:30.
This is what I did:
I knew I had a big hill to climb at mile 9 so I tried to do some of the other miles a little bit faster to even out the pace. The middle 10 miles averaged out to be 7:06. It was definitely not easy and it took a heck of a lot of convincing that morning to get out of bed but I was really happy afterwards with how it went.
I foam rolled and stretched for a few minutes and then it was off to the parade with the Brookers.
She was a huge fan of the whole thing.
Donuts= our every holiday tradition.
We had a delicious bbq for dinner and I was reminded of how much I love corn on the cob.
And of course we had the sugar cookie fruit pizza flag.
Followed by getting in our matching shirts for the evening.
We had Stadium of Fire to attend. JOURNEY performed (which was incredible) and the fireworks were out of control like they are every year.
60,000 people were there last night!
Brooke showed off her dancing skills. It was a very successful July 4th.
Rest day today. I’m ready.

What kind of day is it for you today?
Best thing you ate yesterday?
I learned yesterday that one of my friends hates bananas!?!? Anyone else out there that hates bananas?
Long run this weekend? How’d it go?

Best thing I ate yesterday was homemade peanut butter chocolate layered fudge. Or maybe my potato salad, not sure! That looks like a crazy hard run but one that you can ride the high from for a couple of days at least. Awesome job!
Erica
Chris will gag at the smell of a banana.
Best thing I ate yesterday was this cheesy, chicken, salsa thing.
Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious
OMG that cake is gynormous and looks delicious! I am not a fan of bananas either . They have to be hidden in a smoothie or muffin in order for me to eat them. Rest day for me too. Happy resting!

Today is just a regular ol’ Sunday. I’m watching Tour de France right now and then in the afternoon I am watching the Canadian Track and Field champs as I have lots of friends to watch.
I had a perfectly ripe avocado that made the best guacamole for my snack last night. I also had fresh picked strawberries. Yum!
No long run for me – or running at all. Bit of a soleus strain and since I’m solo-parenting/have no one to watch Max, I can’t run anyways :-(
Natalie
Today is a relaxing day. Easy run, then church, pool, nap and watching the soccer game.
Best thing I ate yesterday was froyo. Birthday cake and salted caramel pretzel flavors :)
I love bananas! I know some people who can’t stand them, though. I hate banana-flavored things, but I love the actual fruit.
My long run yesterday went great! Finally starting to feel easier again.
Molly Rose
what a sweet dad :)
I ran (with a bit of walking) 5 miles yesterday, which is the farthest I’ve gone in a while, and with no reports of hip pain, yay! I’ve been staying away from running for a couple months now because of this pain, and tested it out a bit yesterday. So I’m a happy running camper again :)
About to head off to work this morning BOOO, but I may need to get a donut on my way to cheer me up about having to work on the weekend. Brooke’s convinced me. ;)
Tonya
What kind of day is it for you today? Rest from exercise (except abs) and a chore day (4 loads of laundry, prepping 2 guest rooms for 4 guests arriving in 2 weeks, taking recycling, grocery shopping, getting meals planned for a busy week).
Best thing you ate yesterday? Warm brie topped with fresh wild strawberry jam on French bread.
I learned yesterday that one of my friends hates bananas!?!? Anyone else out there that hates bananas? NO WAY! Great fresh or frozen.
Long run this weekend? How’d it go? Mine was Wednesday and it went great, though I was sore till today! This week is a speed week, then a 13-miler on July 17.
Sally @ sweat out the small stuff
I go through love hate phases with bananas.
Had some delicious cornbread and coleslaw with my dinner last night.
Might run today. Might not. I’ll play it by ear :)
Sarah @ SarahRuns26
Bananas aren’t my favorite fruit but I do like them. I hate banana flavored things though!
My mom has driven next to me for a few of my runs before. I’m pretty lucky to have such great parents too!
Donuts for every holiday is always a win!
Susan
Today is a rest day. Ran 5 days last week so feeling like I earned it!
Best thing I ate yesterday strawberry cake that I brought to a BBQ. It was a hit.
I love bananas–especially cold ones (I keep them in the fridge).
Nancy
You have the best dad!! Run, church and house stuff and soccer game. Hoping for a nap in there too. Best thing I ate yesterday?? Grilled turkey burger and key lime pie!!
Melissa
-The 4th started with a race and ended with me in a child size pool for an ice bath. lol:)
-Best thing I ate was a GF pizza (my reward for running ) yes I am food drivin’
-I have a friend allergic to bananas
-I ran a 20 km race ( 12.4 miles) I needed 12 for my training and thought I’d toss a race in there too. :) I got a t-shirt out of it :)
Jennifer @ JenChoosesJoy
That cookie cake looks so good!
It’s a rainy morning in Nashville. I did a treadmill run and we’re heading to church.
Best 4th food: vegan BBQ sliders!!
LOVE bananas
I started NYC marathon training this weekend with a nice 12 miler. :)
Claire
Slow easy run day today–also did a 14 miler yesterday for the MCM, although I didn’t have the sweet personal escort service for the first 6 pre-dawn miles;)
Obsessed with bananas, I eat one every day after running (or when not running…) Used to hate them, now I love them! Banana+PB+(a few bites of cold cheesecake as I discovered today–protein, why not?) hit the spot after a run. Or whenever.
Had to comment to say I LOVE all of your stylish, classy, and modest clothing–what a great example for Brooke and the rest of us! As a twenty something who tries to dress with style and dignity, I appreciate your clothing pics and store recommendations and am so encouraged to see another young, hip woman out there who flaunts the message of loving her body in the Christian spirit so well! Not super common to see in today’s society, so just wanted to thank you and let you know how motivating it is:)
The Hungry Runner Girl
I appreciate your comment so much. It means the world to me! We’ve got this Claire:)

Your Dad is amazing! That is totally something my Dad would do for me if he lived close by! He is always worried about me running so early by myself!
BBQ for the win yesterday! I use to hate bananas, but now I love them!! My long run yesterday was 10 miles! Today = rest day for me too! Hallelujah!
Suzy
10 miles at 7:05 is incredible!!! How early did you wake up that it’s still dark out in summertime!?!? YIKES. You’re amazing. Best thing I ate yesterday? I can’t say it’s the best thing, but I accidentally ate liver paté. I feel woozy just thinking about it. I mean, it was fine and everything in the moment but I had no idea it was liver. ACK.
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes
How sweet of your dad!
My day is a rest day today. Yesterday my long run was 12 miles.
I eat at least one banana every day, but I don’t like artificial banana flavors at all..
Best thing I ate yesterday was BBQ pulled pork.
Susy
Your dad is great, chapeau!
Laur
I know someone who doesn’t like ANY fruit?!?! How is this possible? It’s nature’s candy. Literally. I don’t get people. Haha.
A guy I dated like bananas but not banana bread (!??!) I knew I should have been suspicious of him after this.
Jenny
The stadium of fire was amazing last night. So glad we went. Looks like we sat in the same section, that’s cool.
I hate bananas. The only thing I can eat that has bananas or tastes like bananas is banana cream pie and banana bread. Any artificial banana flavoring is nasty to me. And I don’t like the texture of real bananas.
Kristen
Today is an interval run day.
Best thing I ate yesterday was black forest cake. Yum!
I’m not a huge banana fan and there was a few years there that I really didn’t like them.
I think they’re only good with pb or in a smoothie or something. Fake banana flavor is the actual worst ever. (Strange ’cause my sister loves it.)
MK
My boyfriend used to hate bananas! Turns out he was trying to eat them when they were hard and green. I QUICKLY informed him that yellow + brown spots = perfection.
Hollie
That sounds like a really fun and special fourth of July. I would love to have someone next to me handing me water, etc. It sounds perfect!
I’m glad you had a great Fourth Janae and enjoy today as well. :-)
meredith@ Cookie ChRUNicles
Hmm, best thing I ate yesterday — m&m cake, chocolate covered pretzels and oh, a cinnamon raisin bagel for lunch. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Arthi
Props to your pops! Very nice of him to do that!
Best thing I ate yesterday were the no bake pb bars I made courtesies of Sally’s Baking Addicition: http://sallysbakingaddiction.com/2013/07/02/no-bake-reeses-peanut-butter-bars/ … So easy … And so delicious.
Have a good Sunday!
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out
that fruit flag pizza looks great!!
Alyssa @ RenaissanceRunnerGirl
You have such an amazing dad to do that! Loving the fruit flag – my favorite thing was GF corn muffins I made for a side and the BBQ Chicken my dad makes. He’s a runner too but driving alongside me…cannot imagine him ever doing that!
Liz @ A Latte Running
Today is a rest day for me, which is very much needed and I’m quite excited about it :)
The best thing I ate yesterday was definitely a Belgian waffle with blueberries at a small diner – it was perfect fuel for my first college visit!
I definitely don’t hate bananas – I love them frozen, but their texture when they are room temperature sometimes icks me out.
I had a semi-long run of 7 miles yesterday with my XC team – it absolutely flew by and it was awesome because it was raining (and I love running in the rain :) )
Mindy
Bananas and I don’t get along, I have some sort allergic reaction to them and end up in horrible pain for 3-4 hours until they are out of my system.
Rest day today. My long run was a struggle this week. I am having a hard time getting back in the groove after Ragnar. Hopefully this week will get better before I start my marathon training on the 13!
Angie @ Pace With Grace
How sweet of your dad!
Rest day for me today and I even slept in which is such a rare occurrence.
Best thing I ate yesterday was a 7 layer salad- so yummy
I used to HATE bananas until about a year ago. I gave them another try and my taste buds must have changed. I don’t love them but will eat them now and again. It was a texture thing I think.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!!
Erin
Bananas–ugh! I always feel bad if someone around me is about to eat one because I have to run away. The smell makes me almost throw up immediately. BUT…I love banana bread. So bizarre. :)
tess
The smell is fine, but the texture is not. I don’t love bananas. I will eat them with almond butter in a pinch. I’m not happy about it. and it has to be a perfect bananas. Any brown and the answer is a big fat no.
Niki @ Life With Niki
Awww that is incredibly kind of your dad! Loved all of your patriotic outfits and treats, seems like you had an incredible run and a great holiday :). The best thing I ate were probably some black bean double chocolate cupcakes… with whipped cream frosting!
amy
I love how sweet your dad is to you!
jade
You have such a sweet dad!
I do not like bananas.
Laura
I hate bananas.. I think I hate them because they were served to me on an airplane-ride for breakfast when I was very young, and I got sick afterwards. (TMI: so therefore, I associate bananas with vomit.)
Watermelon was the best thing I ate yesterday. Enjoy your rest-day!
Hailey
What a sweet dad! My mom bikes alongside me when I have to run in the dark :) Great job on your long run! That’s an awesome pace!
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul
I love 4th of July cookie flags! Yours looks yummy!
Lisa @ TechChick Advrntures
I never knew so many people didn’t like/have issues with bananas! I like them when they are freshly ripe (maybe a slight bit green in the peel), but after that I could pass on them.
I had an easy 5 miles today, but Friday I had my first 20 miler of this training cycle. So glad to get that done in the morning so I could enjoy the holiday weekend!
Pretty awesome to help you out like that!!
Caroline
Your dad is awesome!
The best thing I ate yesterday was watermelon!!!! Not any different from any other day, tho.
I hate hate hate bananas! Can’t stomach them. I think it’s because one of my ‘specialties’ that I bake and everyone is banana bread and the secret is allowing the bananas to be so ripe that they are literally oozing! The smell is so bad that it has forever tainted me from enjoying them.
Today’s schedule: 2 hr run (done!); 75 minute hot yoga (done!); lunch with a friend…
Then the usual errands, laundry, getting ready for the week.
Enjoy your Sunday!
Amanda B @ Cupcakes & Miles
Hates bananas?! What does that even mean?! ;)
Best thing I ate yesterday? Corn casserole! I love corn casserole!
I’m heading over to the gym now, and am planning to get in a nice 3 miles along with some core work and strength training.
Enjoy the rest of your day!
Half Marathon James
I don’t think I know anyone who’d follow me on a long run supplying Gatorade.. Especially that early in the morning. You are very lucky :)
Natalie
Your Dad is so awesome!! So nice to run super early on a holiday and have it all done.
Love the Flag dessert!! What a fun day!
I had an amazing lentil salad yesterday – so good :)
Megan D
I wondered if someone hated bananas and that is why it was missing from the bottom of the fruit pizza. I don’t eat bananas plain, but if they are on/in/or have pb or almond butter on them, then I will eat them. No dessert says the fourth of July more than fruit pizza. Sadly, I did not have one yesterday ( I even told Ross yesterday that I might be making one this week because I have been craving it) It was my first 4th of July away from my home/family/home town in 12 years so it felt really ‘off’.
The best thing I ate thought was a Bahn Mi salad and peanut butter bar from Baked. It was tasty. Speaking of tasty, I have never tried Daylight Donuts. I need to remedy that.
I danced at Stadium of Fire back in my drill team days, so now I always think of that dance when anyone mentions that show.
I am glad you had a great day and a great run!
Tracy W
Your dad is awesome. My husband will do that for me on one of the roads I like to run. He doesn’t think it’s a safe area. I’ve had two women drive by and ask if I am ok because they notice the car “tailing” me. It’s is great to be loved and protected (and supported) by amazing me-husbands or dads.
Megs
I still can’t get over that about your dad. So so so sweet! Yesterday was just the best! Love you to pieces. xoxoxo
Amber Chj
My younger sis hates bananas – can’t quite wrap my head around that.
Long run yesterday AM – 14 miles. Returned in a world of pain. Groin/pelvic area. Praying that it is just a strain, but terrified that it’s a stress fracture. I am on week 2 of training for marathon #3. Need to get in to the doc asap so I can figure out what is going on. Needless to say, today is a rest day!
Stacey
Our Fourth was awesome — my favorite 5k in the morning, followed by a delicious hot dog dinner and fireworks. I love it!
I adore anything banana. I even like those banana Runts that everyone hates. Mmmm.
That is so awesome that your dad followed you like that. My mom once drove out in the middle of a Thunderstorm to rescue me (she knew my running route). It was the sweetest thing ever.
I have to work tonight, but the rest of the day was spent relaxing. I love lazy Sundays :)
LeAnne @ This is my faster!
Best thing I ate yesterday was shrimp and sausage pasta :) Perfect for carb loading
Here’s my deal with bananas… I don’t like to eat the fruit by itself. But I LOVE banana bread, I have banana’s in my smoothies, and in other baked goods etc. Weird right???
Today I ran…18 miles…longest long run ever for me :)
Olivia Crew
I can’t say I am a fan of bananas… It’s more about the texture for me. I wish I liked them because they are great for workouts!
Jess
Bananas are so great for you! Except I can only eat organic ones, conventionally grown ones make me gag. I learned it from my brother which was good or else I would have had to give them right up. And I eat nothing made of bananas except for smoothies.
On my long run yesterday morning I ran into a group of three women I very slightly know and ran with them for the last couple of miles of their long run. I always run alone so that made my entire weekend.
Colleen @ CSmith Run
I also hate bananas… A runner who hates bananas haha. But to be far, I don’t like most fruits. But I love vegetables.
I did my long run this morning – 8 miles around 8:00 – 8:15, then the last 3 at 7:45!
Christina
That is great about your Dad – that is the biggest challenge I deal with for training. Running alone in the dark – it’s dark in the mornings and evenings for me with my work schedule. So week days are usually a bit restricted with what route I can take. I tried doing my big runs in the morning but it was too eerie.
I was pumping cortisol out of nerves!! Now mid week I have settled for after work runs which are tougher mentally, but got to put my safety first.
Favourite thing I are yesterday…oats, banana with a huge dollop of peanut butter! Yum! So yes I also love bananas.
12 miler on Saturday at 8 pace – felt great. Except it’s pretty cold here in Melbourne right now so my hands were freezing when I got home…need to buy some thin gloves! Xx
Kristen @ Glitter and Dust
Today was a big travel day, driving from Seattle to Central Oregon. We made it home around 2 and now I want to do nothing but kick up my feet, lounge on the couch and watch the Women’s World Cup. Long car rides apparently wear this pregnant girl out!
Best thing I ate yesterday was a burger that my husband prepared. And fruit salad!!!
I love bananas but am super picky about the ripeness… if they are too ripe I will not eat them.
Tedi @ Running With Infertility
Best thing I had yesterday: Watermelon! Oh my gosh was it good! :)
Long run was 6 miles after a 4 week knee injury. I walked some of it, but I’m still trying to get miles on my feet. :) Definitely feel good.
Tammie
Amazing run Jenae! I did 6 miles in the West Virginia mountains. Best thing I ate potato salad and Reese’s s’mores
Rachel @ Simply Rachel Nicole
What a fun weekend! That is SO awesome that your Dad stayed with you for your whole run! What an awesome Dad :)
Julia @ Lord Still Loves Me
You have the sweetest dad ever! How awesome that he kept up with you the entire time. I would love to drive next to someone during their long run. It would be so much fun to motivate them throughout the whole thing!
JOURNEY IS MY FAVORITE BAND EVER. I have seen them twice in concert and both days were highlights of my entire life.
Best thing I ate yesterday: a carne asada burrito the size of my face. I had it the night before too. no shame.
Have a great rest of your Sunday, sweet Janae!
Kathee
I would encourage anyone running in the dark to wear reflective vests. Even if you have someone driving next to you. People are crazy and I’ve taken care of way to many people who have been hit by cars out on a run.
Jessica @ VEGGIE RUNNING MOMMA
I took a rest day today also :) not really needed like you. Haha. But ehh, not really training for anything either. Lol.
I had corn on the cob yesterday too.!! Soo good.
Looks like you guys had a great 4th :)
Karien @ Running the Race
Your dad ROCKS. He reminds me of my own :) .
Jane @ 50statecanuck
I love your dad.
That is all that needs to be said.
Juan D.
Fast and beautiful! Keep up the good work!
Kay
I love corn on the cob too, yum!
