Speed Changes + Help Me Decide!

(shorts, tank, bra, shoes)

Can you find Jo in the picture below?!

Speed day! I was excited to catch up with my friend in the picture below on the left. She ran 2:32 at Boston and is on fire!
This workout is kind of confusing, so I’ll do my best to explain!

3 x 1-mile speed change (100m FAST/100m float ((not easy but not all out)) followed by a float mile before starting the next mile of speed changes. The canyon is perfect for this workout because the trail is marked with triangles to indicate each 100m, so we don’t have to look at our watch; we watch for triangles.

I felt great and had two friends to try to keep up with, which helped me do faster splits on this workout than ever before. The first one is flat; the second two drop a bit overall. The 5 miles go by very fast because you are constantly changing paces.

Speed change #1-> 5:48/Float-> 6:55/ Speed change #2-> 5:49/float-> 6:58/ Speed change #3-> 5:48

Try this workout out; it is fun (if painful is also part of your definition of fun).

Also, I am now wondering if I prefer the Adizero over the Vaporfly. The foam feels much more durable while giving quite the spring with each step.

We met some friends at the park. They noticed that the two of us were matching:

Popsicle cheersing.

Another day of soccer tryouts!

Chic-fil-a fuels me on these crazy nights.

And now for a few random things:

*Andrew woke me up in the middle of the night by shaking me and telling me to stop falling off the bed. He was sleep-talking, ha.

*Yesterday, Jen shared with me about Candice. She did 32 miles a day for 200 days. Incredible. I cannot even imagine.

*Help me decide which tile option to go for in our powder room, laundry room, and mudroom… I love them all!

Do you sleep talk? Snore? Remember your dreams often?

-I remember a few weeks after we got married, waking up to Andrew going to get graham crackers and milk in the middle of the night, and he was completely asleep.

Ultramarathon?  Done it, on your bucket list or no thank you?

-One and done for me unless I have someone to do every step with:)

What is your favorite spot to relax where you live?

I noticed Candice’s Sprite in that picture, so I needed to ask about your #1 soda choice (if you drink soda).

-Diet Dr. Pepper

Option 2, though you can’t go wrong with any, which is probably part of the problem. :)
Ultra – never
Back deck

That is totally the problem hahah. Thank you Nancy and I hope you get time on your back deck today!

I ran 30 miles for my 30th birthday. That’s enough haha. Longest I had run before that was a half so I was super proud of myself.

I vote for #2 on the tile!

Thank you so much for the help, Allison!

I used to sleep walk all of the time! I’d wake up to my clothes laid out on my bed, food sitting on my nightstand.. you name it.

A&W Root Beer, Sprite, or Rock&Rye Faygo (it’s a Michigan thing.. do you have it in Utah?)

If you are choosing just one tile, I’d go with #2. But I love them all!

Oh my goodness, no way! Oh I bet that was kind of scary! We don’t have that here but now I must find it to try! Thank you so much, Wendy for the help! Have a beautiful day!

love option 1- though if I’m being honest I’d be afraid I’d get tired of it in a few years and pick something more simple/classic.
so cool that your trail is marked every 100m. I’ve done a similar workout on the track-hard on the straight/easy on the turns (ins and outs). probably a lot more fun on a path!

So so true, Ida… that’s a good point. I want to try it on the track next, that would be fun. Happy Thursday!

I have a blue tile very similar to tile #2 in a bathroom at my house and I love it. I get so many compliments on it. But I love tile #1 too.

I used to sleep walk as a kid but it’s been awhile since it’s happened. My brother in law has some crazy sleep walking stories. And I have been on a big Fanta Orange soda kick but I love a Squirt too.

Reply

I bet that is gorgeous in blue. THANK you for sharing. You are going to have to tell me some of his stories soon, I bet that would be so scary. Off to get some Fanta Orange, that just takes me back to childhood. Happy Thursday, Corrinne!

I love that your trail has triangle markers! That’s half the battle for speed workouts – I cannot figure out how to pay that close attention to my watch for more than 5 minutes.
Middle tile is my choice! The right reminds me of banana slices (not in a bad way!).:)
I did a 50k and now I am torn between what to do post-pregnancy – work up to a marathon OR work up to another 50k. Both are fun for different reasons! I think I would fail at training for anything longer than a 50k though- bonus points for anyone who successfully trains for an ultra with little kids. I hadn’t heard about Candice, so thanks for sharing that!
I don’t drink soda, but my soda-ish drink that I discovered lately is sparkling water (I’ve tried both strawberry & lemon) + key lime juice – SO good. I had some leftover bottled key lime juice from a dessert I made.

Reply

Right?! It’s just so nice to go entirely off of feel and not look at your watch! Oh my goodness, someone else told me the banana slices too and now I see it so much. You must keep me updated with what you choose to train for next. I’m so excited for you! Your sparkling water combo sounds so refreshing. Have a great day, Katie!

My legs hurt reading about your speed workout!! Float pace is the worst in my opinion!
And is Jo standing on avalanche snow??
I sleep talk a little. My bigger issue is how disoriented I am if suddenly awoken. There was one night that my husband came into the bedroom while I was asleep. I woke up. I thought he was an intruder and there to murder me. There was a lot of screaming. That was like 6 years ago and he still gets so nervous to accidentally wake me up. …gotta love me!!

Reply

I am so with you, your body is screaming for a recovery pace at that point and it’s so hard to keep yourself in check at that point. Yep, she was standing near the river on the snow. That would have been terrifying. You are so worth the screaming in the middle night and trying to kill your husband;). Have a great day, Molly and great job on your mile!

All the tiles are so pretty..I like #2 best!

Reply

Thank you, Ashlea for the help! I am loving #2 so so so much too!

Diet coke or diet Dr. pepper. Although it is very rare for me to drink soda anymore.
All 3 tiles are pretty. I can see why you’re having a hard time deciding.
I cannot imagine running 32 miles every day!! Wow! That is incredible.
Good job on your speed workout! That sounds tough. But yay for having friends to do it with.
Have a good Thursday!

Teach me to stop drinking soda too:) Seriously, I am changing my mind every five seconds. RIght?!? I need a nap just thinking about it. Thanks, Wendy! Have the best day!

Reply

I love all the tile, but my advice is the one with the least amount of grout lines (dirt gets in there quick)!

Reply

Sooooo so true and I know that dirty look would drive me NUTS. Thanks Lauren, have a beautiful day!

Dr pepper! I do like ultras but they are so time consuming to train for haha. I

The workout sounds like fun! Will need to try it!

Today River is going for her first ever professional grooming! Jason has usually done it but we want her all spiffy for Saturday lol..wish us luck haha.

Have an amazing day Janae!

Reply

That’s the thing… I wish I could do more ultras without all of the training haha. Yay for River, this is a big day and you are right… Saturday is a HUGE day and she needs to be looking her best:). I cannot wait to see the pictures. So happy for you, Kristine. Congratulations! TWO DAYS!

Reply

Hi Janae! I’ve done a similar workout before and you’re totally right it’s much better to do it when the trail is marked out! For such short distances the Garmin isn’t always accurate so relying on it isn’t great!
I like option 1 and 2.. 3 kinda reminds me of cut banana slices haha.
Have a wonderful day!

Reply

That is so true about the Garmin being off on those short intervals and I think checking my watch that much would make me dizzy haha. Oh my gosh I see the banana slices now! Thanks for the help, have a great day, Amy!

I vote option 1, but I also love 2, so if you need two, then I say use both! I tried on the Saucony endorphin speed and pro, and I wish I wouldn’t have because now I looooove the pro, but I also don’t have a specific race coming up (probably a half in the Fall?). I’m trying to justify buying them to just train in…help!

Reply

Thank you Tess for the help haha. Uggggg my wallet wishes I don’t love them so much too. I will help you justify them, I am a bad influence ha:). But really… you do need them:). Happy Thursday, Tess!

Whatever works best with darker grout! We used white grout in our bathroom floor tile and I can’t keep it white…

Reply

Oh noooooo thank you for the warning! Hope your day is a gorgeous one, Maggi!

Reply

Options 1 or 2. 3 looks too much like linoleum (probably just a picture thing).

Reply

Good point! Thanks Hilary!

So excited for you Janae on your house remodel. Option two is fantastic. But go with what makes your heart happiest.

Have a great holiday weekend.

I’m not sure I see the issue here. You have 3 rooms and 3 tiles. Just use one for each room. Simple solution.

:)

Reply

#1! I love a hex tile. And you could do gray grout w/ that tile whereas I think you’d need to do white with #2? Can’t wait to see the full reno!

Reply

I vote for Option #1. 2 is pretty too, but I feel like since you are doing it in 3 spaces, I like the bigger pattern.

Ultra – trail run (does not need to be a race), yes, please! If you are looking, Skyline-to-Sea trail (near your old CA stomping grounds) was amazing.
Tile – octagons are the bestagons (for math nerds… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thOifuHs6eY) (and dark[er] grout! Dirty white grout is the worst to clean!)
Soda – the rare times I drink it, Dr Pepper, preferable with a squeeze of lime (regular, I’m allergic to artificial sweeteners).

Reply

#1 would be fun in the bathroom and #2 for the rest.

My daughter has full on conversations in her sleep. She used to sleep walk and talk, too, which is verrrry creepy.

I don’t drink soda but do drink bubbly water, plain. It’s a thing in Europe to drink “water with gas.” Our soda isn’t nearly as sweet and almost all fruit juices come in a sparkling version. Hansen’s grapefruit soda has a good bite to it, fountain Pepsi, or rootbeer in a float would be my pick though. I am still curious about Utah’s soda obsession! I find it very interesting!

I like Ultra’s but I can not imagine a hundred miler or more. Running during the night scares me and imagine I’d trip ALL.THE.TIME!

Love #1!

My kids sleep laugh a lot – it’s amazing. Full blown giggles. I wonder if it’s heredity because I swear I remember waking myself up from my own laughing as a kid!

Hi Janae!
Sometimes a fountain diet Coke or Sprite from McDonald’s (only McDonald’s, haha) hits the spot for me.

Question for you, do the adizero shoes run true to size, in your opinion? Thanks so much, in advance!!

Have a great night!!

I am probably the quietest sleeper ever… my husband on the other hand snores crazy loud and sleep talks. He now wears breath right strips and a thing over his head and chin to keep his mouth closed. I’m a deep sleeper though, so unless I’m awake, I can sleep through anything. However when I was pregnant and after having a newborn I was waking up in the middle of the night, so his very very loud snoring drove me crazy!
I can’t imagine an ultra I always said I was one and done for the marathon, but I ended up running my marathon at 10 weeks pregnant and ran a 4:19, no speedy, but I was still content, but now I wonder if I could break 4 hrs while not pregnant! Training takes up a lot of time, and I struggle to wake up before 6!

DDP for sure!

I dream of Ultras?….but nah, I know my limitations, but I love relay races through the mountains, and will take the harder legs..love up hill, a variety or terrain and running in the dark……
dreaming is interesting…lately every night, and so real…it seems the more I train, or the harder, the more I dream…I don’t believe that they mean anything…just chemicals and what not in our heads….I used to have a grandmom that had a book she used to interpret dreams, but I never believed any of that…I used to have a lot of nightmares when I was younger…I wonder if those are different….and yes, Coke is it…it can’t be Pepsi, has to be the real thing….
