Lose it fast or gain it fast?

(shoes, shorts, tank, socks, bra)

Does anyone else feel like they lose their fitness fast when they take time off training or speed?!

I do. Every. Single. Time. After some time away from it, I feel like the first speed workout makes me feel like a wobbly baby giraffe.

What makes those first workouts back possible (mentally) is knowing that the fitness comes back fast too.

The training blocks that we have done don’t disappear, they are still in there, but we have to shake off the rust to get to it.

Forward is a pace, and that’s all we need to do as we get back into things!

11 miles total @ 7:32 average with a w/u, 5 x 2 min hard (2 min easy), 5 x 1 min hard (1 min easy), 5 x 30 sec hard (30 sec easy), c/d. It felt tough, and we took those recovery minutes SLOW to try and catch our breath. I finished and remembered why I love this pain; I feel like a million bucks the rest of the day.

The avalanche remains are going to be here for quite some time. We’ve had plenty of 70° days, and I swear none has melted.
I wore the endorphin pro 3s, and I’m in love so far. I’ll write a review when I get more mileage in them, but for now, I’ll say they have a fantastic pop and take away any pounding you may feel while running on the roads.

PT exercises afterward!

Our dining room table bench has come in handy for these. I’ve had a good idea over the years that my glutes weren’t working as they should, yet I am just now doing something about it. I’m not sure why I was willing to put in 80-mile weeks yet skip some exercises that will make a big difference, but here we are… At least I’m doing them now!

The tile in our entrance is going in… I love it!

This melted my heart… a few hours away was too much for them (for the first time ever😂).

We got to spend some time with my mom!

We got in some relaxing too before all of the soccer…

And then we parked it here:

Who loves Saucony?  What is your favorite shoe of theirs?

Fill in the blank for me… I won’t run outside if it is__________________.

Let’s say you got an automatic bib and travel fees covered to one of the six major marathons (Tokyo, Boston, London, Chicago, Berlin, New York), which one would you choose?

Longest break you have ever taken from running for things other than an injury?

Yes – I love your blog and it was my inspiration whilst trying to break sub-3 for the marathon. Did it in 2.53 2.5 weeks ago and currently have no idea how I can hold that pace for a mile let alone 26.2….I do know it will come back albeit slowly post race. However, with injury it always surprises me how tough the first runs back are but at the same point how quickly I get back to fitness.

Laura. This. Made. My. Day. Hugest congratulations. A 2:53… you SMASHED your sub-3 goal. I am just so impressed by you. What marathon was it? Happy recovery!

Thank you! Didn’t quite believe it as went off way too fast and just hung on for 10 very grim miles. I still don’t believe I am a proper runner yet despite starting in the pen with all the time qualified proper runners…..but I think it is following the bloggers of you “proper runners” and realising you are people too that really helped. I love how normal you are despite running amazing times!

Forgot to say it was London marathon which is my local major marathon.

Last year you got me hooked on the Saucony Pro 2s! Now I will wait for the 3s to go on sale.
I am making a memo now to do mobility and strength tonight!!
Do you have any 5Ks or 10Ks on your calendar yet?
Have a great day around all the house projects! :)

Aren’t the pro 2s just the best! I am doing a 10k in June and a 5k in July and I am absolutely terrified. I do not know how to race them! Thank you, Molly and great speed workout yesterday! You nailed those 400s!

I haven’t tried the Saucony’s yet but I always love your recommendations. I love your floor tile
Longest without running would be about a week (while on vacations) but I’m also putting in a lot of steps walking on these vacations so that counts as something ha

Is that a romper in the last pic?? Can you share..I love comfy stylish clothes

Thank you, Ashlea! I swear I get in more steps on those types of travel days then when I am running at home haha. Yes and yes! Putting it in my favorites post tomorrow too because I am beyond obsessed.

I will not run outside if wind gusts are 50 mph or higher! I have been wearing Kinvaras for years and love them. I also want to try the endorphin shifts as they have a similar heel/toe drop as the Kinvaras. Any time I try another brand of shoe, I get injured…

Reply

Amen to that… I think I’m closer to 30 mph… you are brave! Kinvaras were one of my first running shoes ever. They are the best. Thank goodness for Saucony. Their shoes are amazing and you’ll have to let me know what you think of the endorphin shifts! Have a beautiful day, Jackie!

I love Saucony – I will always view the Ride as my go to, but I am currently obsessed with the Endorphin Shift 3s. They make my feet so happy. I am tempted to try the Pros though, so I’m looking forward to your full review! I race in the Endorphin Speed 2s now.

I would pick Berlin so my husband and I could have an excuse to visit Germany!

Everyone is loving the Shift 3s… I think this means I need to try them! I totally told my coach yesterday that I would choose Berlin too, so let’s go the same year! Have the best day, Rachel!

Hi Janae! Saucony guides were my first real running shoe! When I started running I didn’t realize you had to run in running shoes and after I got injured my mom took me to the Saucony store and bought me two pairs of shoes! I was so excited they were so pretty and I loved them.
Running is like a bank account with really high interest that goes both ways! You’re so right it comes back fast too and what you’ve done in the past matters because your body remembers.
Have a wonderful day!

I love that the Saucony guides were your first real running shoes… the kinvaras were one of my first pairs! Such a sweet memory that your mom took you to the Saucony store! Amen to the high interest… what a great way to look at it. Thanks Amy, you too!

Hi Janae! Just want to thank you for the speedwork inspiration: I saw you post this workout on Instagram yesterday and decided it looked fun, so I tackled it last night and loved it! I’m trying to work some speed back into my routine before I start training for the Chicago Marathon this fall, and it felt so good to turn my legs over (though I definitely relate to wobbly giraffe feeling, lol).

I am obsessed with the Saucony Pro 2s and the Speed 2s – they are my absolute favorite! I’ll probably be switching over to the Pro 3s and Speed 3s later this year, and am also dying to try the Endorphin Elites – have you run in those ones yet? They’re quite the splurge, but I may bite the bullet and try them out before Chicago.

Hope you have a great day!

Madeline! Way to go on your workout! I’m glad I was not alone in feeling like a baby giraffe… I was dying! Chicago, marathon! I am so so excited for you!
Funny you asked about that because I have them on my Mother’s Day list;). I want them SO bad. You’ll have to let me know if you try them and what you think. Hope you have a beautiful day!

I don’t run in Saucony, but I love them! I wore them when I first started getting more serious about running and they’ve since discontinued the shoe I used. But I think they’re a great brand and super stylish! I should try them again but I also don’t want to stray too far from my Hokas…haha. I won’t run outside if it’s too windy. Yuck. Automatic bib would be Boston, 1000%! Also, LOVE the tile in your entry way it’s gorgeous!

I swear Saucony was the first pair of real running shoes for a lot of us! I get why you don’t want to sway from Hokas, they are truly amazing too. I can’t get enough. I want you at Boston! Thank you so much, I am so excited!

Saucony Kinvara 13!!!! It’s a great lightweight daily trainer. I love them!! The previous Kinvaras were great, too, buck they… Quacked? er squeak-creaked when you walked (not really during running, though). They fixed that with the 13s and also added little details that make it feel like a nicer shoe. LOVE!

I won’t run outside if it’s icy. But I have been hailed on!

Reply

I have had a pair of shoes that quacked too and it drove me crazy! Thank goodness they fixed that problem, I would love to try the Kinvara 13s. Ice is truly the worst. Have the best day, Mel!

I have worn Saucony for years – one of the few companies who consistently makes shoes for my little feet! I am in love with the Excursion for my trails.

I won’t run outside if it is raining in California, but I will run outside in the rain in Hawaii… weird, I know!

I’ve taken a couple weeks off from running a few times when we’ve been traveling out of the country. We always do a ton of walking and usually rent bikes, but I don’t usually run.

Reply

YAY for Saucony, I am so glad they have shoes that work so well for you. Oh that is interesting about the rain but I can see the rain in Hawaii just being better:). Happy weekend, Kathy! So excited for your trip this month!

Funny you should ask the Saucony question………….after YEARS of calling myself a Brooks shoe girl, I find myself more in love with Saucony so I have converted. I still have some Brooks shoes that I will wear, but for me nothing comes close to the Endorphin Shift…………..I have 4 pair and love them. I ran my marathon in them a few weeks ago and my feet and legs were never happier.

I will not run outside if it’s thundering. Or wind gusts might stop me, too.

I would put New York on the top of my list, because I would love to see the city all at once, with the benefit of roads being closed.

I love the Endorphin Pros and Speeds!

I won’t run outside if there’s lightning or crazy wind. I’ve done the wind and it actually hurt because it tossed up little pebbles. I live in a fairly fair weathered place (minus the hot summers) so I am a bit of a sissy with running weather.

I would love to do the London Marathon, but I’ve heard so many good things about NY so I would probably have to go with NY.

I don’t know that I’ve ever taken a full break from running unless I was injured or sick. Maybe a couple of weeks.

Those are fun shoes! Your home is beautiful!

Ok Janae, am I really the only one you are making nervous standing on that bench in slippery socks with no support? Lol…

I would suggest maybe doing it off the bottom stair of a stairway and hang on to the railing (or a broom) or maybe something like an aerobic step next to a nice soft bed, but maybe that is just me……

Reply

I won’t run outside if it is lightening.

Although I would love to run London, I’d pick Tokyo because it’s the furthest and probably the most expensive! I’ve run Berlin and New York and keep putting in for London because it’s not too far to travel. Maybe I’d switch my answer to London since it’s so difficult to get in.

Longest break was about 3 months although I took a cut back YEAR after my metatarsal stress fracture. I amped up cycling and really enjoyed it so only ran when it was convenient and I felt like it. Although it was hard, it also wasn’t that bad because I got stronger from cycling plus had hours of fresh air because of it!!

Your socks are so cute and sporty.

I won’t run outside if it’s over 80 degrees. Okay, if I’m being honest I probably won’t run outside if it’s over 70. My sweet spot is 40 – 50 degrees and no wind. The automatic bib would be a toss up between London & Berlin… I haven’t been to Europe but desperately want to go!
