Another one of my Boston goals + I just have to share this.

(leggings, shirt, shoes)

I’m entering that stage in marathon training, where it is getting harder to get out the door.  The mileage and workout fatigue are accumulating, but that is exactly how I should feel now at this point in training.

10.1 miles @ 8:21 average.

I am excited for the day that I don’t come home with lines all over my forehead from my headbands.

I’m positive there will never be a point in my life where I play more board games than I do now.  I need to start gambling on Skye’s games because she is a guaranteed win.

We went to the library with Skye and Beck’s best friends.

My mom came over to read with Skye, and somehow she knew that I needed brownies and brought them over.  Moms always know.

This ziti recipe was so easy to make and tasted delicious.  I subbed cottage cheese for ricotta because we were out of that.

Emilee dropped this off for me to use for some R&R with all of this training.  It felt so good.

A special congratulations to Utahns that enjoy doing speed workouts on Wednesdays because the roads are actually going to be clear.

PS can I tell you a sweet story (I don’t think I’ve shared this story here…) to go along with this picture I shared of my grandpa.  My grandpa lived in Eagle, Colorado in the 40’s.  He qualified to run in the State Meet in Denver.  When he and his dad got there, they found out they had to have track shoes to compete.  My great-grandpa found a pawn shop and pawned his pocket watch so he could buy my grandpa track shoes for the meet.  My grandpa won and was the state champion… him finally having track shoes made him fly faster than ever.

And his six-pack was from throwing 50 lb bags of potatoes onto railroad flat cars all day.  The high school boys had to go to school at night to work the ranches because the men were at war!

———————————————————————————————–

I’m unsure how Boston is coming up so quickly, but it is just 5.8 weeks away.  My biggest goal is to finish with a time of 2:4X:XX (I’m thinking 2:49, but then my coach sent me a 2:45 pace chart, too ahhhh), but I have another goal–>  I want to finish in the top 100 females this year!  Last year I was 116th, and I’m excited to see what happens this year.  PS if you haven’t noticed, I am obsessed with making goals…

Do you share your goals or keep them more private?

-I wrote a newspaper each week to deliver to my neighbors when I was 7-9 years old.  I would tell them everything about me and my family’s life in that newspaper… oversharing is who I am.

Brownie or cookie?

-Brownie.  Always brownie.

Anyone live in Colorado?  What part?

-We are going to Glenwood Springs this summer.

Anyone else doing speed today?  What about this week?

Janae, I absolutely love that story! I know you have shared that photo before but that photo just gives me the chills. So amazing and inspiring.

I don’t share, but I do write out my goals and the path I am going to take to get there…after all, a goal without a plan is just a wish!

Brownie or cookie….can I opt for some salty tortilla and salsa?

I lived in CO for 20 years and loved it! I still have two properties there, so I go back a few times a year. You all will love Glenwood Springs, it is beautiful!

Have an amazing day!

Thank you, Amanda! I sure like to think about my Grandpa and his running when I am running. YES, writing goals down is so important. Ummmm I am actually with you and a lot of times would choose the salsa and salt. So so amazing you have two properties there, wow. We can’t wait. I hope your Wednesday is off to a great start!

I lived there for 10 years, text me if you want some recommendations.

I totally will! You are the best!

That’s an incredible story about your grandpa (also an incredible picture!).
I’ve been sad that the weather looks cold for the next ten days but then I see your daily winter picture and I’m reminded how easy our winter has been. Good for you for continuing to get out there in that weather!

Thank you so much, Jessica. I sure love it! I think it’s because something is off with my hormones and I just run so hot so it hasn’t been that bad for me… but for my friends that are normal, I have felt very bad for them with the temperatures! Have some hot chocolate after each run over the next ten days!

Yes, I live in Denver! Glenwood Springs is wonderful. I hope you have a good time!

Thank you, Allison! Cannot wait to see more of your beautiful state!

I absolutely love that store of your grandpa and great grandpa!! Crazy to think that track shoes were a thing back in the 40s too.

Hm brownie or cookie is tough but I’ll pick a fudgy brownie I think. Has to be fudgy though.

Reply

Thank you so much! I sure wish I could see his track shoes:). I bet things have changed a lot. Yes, fudgy is a requirement. Hope you get one soon, Maureen!

40 days until Boston! Hope you are starting to make plans for which bagels you are going to overload on for that carb load! ha
I just started to read Chasing Excellence. Have you read it before? Allie Kieffer recommended it years ago and I’m just getting around to it. Which I am waiting on her to make a big comeback!

Reply

40 days ahhh! Crazy! I’m not sure if I can do as many bagels as I did last year haha… I might need some more recommendations. I have to read that book, thank you for sharing. Where is Allie these days?!? I loved watching her story. Happy Wednesday, Molly!

-Lol +1 to being an oversharer!
-Brownies. But only if they come from a box because I truly believe boxed brownies are superior over homemade anything.
-I live in Colorado and LOVE it! After 6+ years of living in Chicago, I now live 15 minute west of Denver in a quiet suburb closer to the foothills and wouldn’t change a thing.
-I did my speed workout yesterday and looking forward to easy miles today :) Question for you – Do your legs ever feel fresh by this point in training? I feel like even with rest days built in, I’m constantly training on tired legs and just accept it until the taper/race day. Also wondering how you avoid burnout with the high mileage/intensity you do! Maybe future post?!

Reply

Thank you for letting me overshare. Ummmm facts. There is not a better brownie than boxed mix brownies. I am SO happy you love where you live. It makes the biggest difference and the places you run always look gorgeous.
Never ever ever ever ever do they feel fresh but get ready for a post about this coming up soon. Thank you for the idea. Hope your day is off to a great start, arthi!

We are in Co this summer too!!!
We should talk and see if we overlap at all!

STOP IT. What dates????

Brownies all the way! I’m 100% here for your oversharing … love it! Generally, I’m pretty private about my goals. I’m training for my first Boston and I have a sore big toe right now that I’m obsessing over. I ran in a new pair of shoes (same make and model as my previous shoes) and they pinched my toe so badly that it turned dark and painful. If anyone has advice on how to make this feel better sooner, I’d love to hear it!

Reply

Thank you for allowing me to share way too much haha. Sarah, I am SO stressed about your big toe too. That is so strange that the same shoes did that to you. Any tips anyone?

I hope you get some brownies today, you need them. Happy Wednesday, Sarah!

I live in Glenwood Springs – you’ll love it! The hot springs is the best (although Iron Mountain won’t let in kids under age 5). Happy to provide any other recommendations! And would love a running meet up :)

Reply

YOU DO!?! Oh this is so fun and please go on a run with me… show me some cool trails? SO good to know about the age limit, we had no idea. Happy Wednesday, Megan!

What a great story about your grandpa and great grandpa.
Glenwood Springs is awesome! You are all going to have such a great time. It’s been a while since we’ve actually stayed there, usually we’re just driving through. There are lots of things to do and great places to eat. Of course the hot springs are amazing.
Definitely brownies! And how sweet of your mom to bring you some.
I used to always do speed work on Wednesdays, but for the last month+ I have done speed on Tuesdays or Thursdays, with an easy longer run on Wednesdays. I have really enjoyed putting a long run in the middle of the week. It fits with my schedule right now, and the local trails are much less crowded than they are on the weekends.
Hope your speed workout goes really well today, and which shoes did you end up going with?
Have a great day!

Thank you, Wendy! We cannot wait to go. I love how you have fit in your training in the middle of the week, that is awesome! You are the best, I went with the alphas and was reminded again that the vaporflys are better;). Happy Wednesday!

Hi Janae! I love that story! Thanks for sharing! I remember Gwen Jorgensen saying you have to put your goals out there into the world. I think having that extra accountability is good when your own motivation flags.
Happy Wednesday!!

Oh I love that! She is so good at sharing her goals online, I love it. Hope your day is a beautiful one, Amy!

I love that story about your grandpa sooo much! I am just finding out some random stories about my grandparents that not even my parents knew. It makes me sad to think of all the stories I will never know about that generation and those before. I lived in Vail Colorado for about a year in my twenties. I would LOVE to live in CO again someday. I am currently on a ski trip in Montana, and I wouldn’t mind living here either haha!

Reply

Isn’t it the best to get to hear about those special stories?! Ski trip in Montana… that sounds incredible! Enjoy every second and I hope you get to move back to one of those spots someday!

What an amazing story about your grandpa, Janae! Sometimes love looks like pawning a watch to provide your children the opportunity to fly.

I usually share at least one of my running goals, but I sometimes keep either the backup goal or the stretch goal private. Last year my Boston plan changed drastically because of IT band stuff, so my goal was to finish, and I did! This year, I would really like a PR (current PR is nearly 6 years old). It sounds audacious at 41, but I earned a PR in the half last fall so if everything falls into place, I think I have a good chance. All we can do is put in the work and pray for ideal conditions!

I had a speed workout this morning: 6 miles just below marathon pace. It was cold and windy, but I got through it without stopping (except for stoplights, and one time my headphones came out…). Proud to get it done, and excited to be inching closer and closer to Boston!

Reply

Margie, that workout in the cold and wind… you are amazing. One step closer to Boston. I hope I see you there!
IT band pain is truly so painful.. congrats on finishing last year! I have a good feeling about your PR happening this year. You can and you will. Please keep me updated with the rest of your training. I am so excited for you! Your body is ready for that PR.

I live in Colorado! It’s the best. I’m from Chicago originally but have been here for 18 years (wow! I don’t feel that old!). I live in Estes Park, up near Rocky Mountain National Park. Glenwood Springs is great for families, you’ll have a blast!

Reply

Eighteen years, that is so great. I bet you live in the most gorgeous area. So happy you made the move! Hope your day is off to a great start, Kirby!

I love that picture and story of your grandpa, and I hope you have it framed near all your medals! It’s so special. I have a confession to make…I hate playing games. Like, card games, board games, etc. I just don’t like it? But my husband LOVES them so sometimes I have to suffer through it. I love your goal making and sharing. I think I keep mine quiet for a bit because I’m a scaredy cat! But then when I become very determined I let it out. You are going to rock Boston!

Reply

I totally get it… you can’t pay me to sit down and play pretend so I understand just not loving certain things. You are not a scaredy cat, I just don’t know how to keep my mouth shut (or turn off my keyboard haha). Thanks Tess, have a beautiful day!

Hi Janae, I live in Durango, Colorado and love living here! My daughter is deciding whether or not to go to
the University of Utah for Nursing; so we may be in your neck of the woods more often if she says yes!

Reply

Oh wow! You will have to let me know what she decides, that is so exciting Jo! I bet you love Durango, I’ve heard great things about that part of Colorado. Have a beautiful day, Jo!

Love that story!! Thank you for sharing! And I also love that you share your goals. I love cheering you (and everyone else) on!!

Can you share the ziti recipe? Looks amazing!

Ps – I’m team cookie! (Only if it’s freshly baked and chewy!)

I am SO sorry I forgot the link… here it is, it was so good. https://www.twopeasandtheirpod.com/baked-ziti/
Thank you for cheering for me, that means a lot. I hope you get an amazing cookie today. Thanks, Megan!

HI!!! It’s meeee :). I’m in CO – my family and I live in Denver but we LOVE Glenwood Springs! My husband and I are actually considering doing our 10 year in Basalt this Fall, which is very near Glenwood and we would absolutely be spending time there. PLEASE reach out if you want recommendations or a friend to stop by and give a hug and share a brownie with on your way out there in Denver <3

Reply

Well, now I’m tempted to make it over to Denver after our Glenwood Springs trip! I will absolutely ask for recommendations and I need to send you this brownie right now! Have a beautiful day, Ashley!

I love Glenwood Springs. I lived in Colorado, but now I live in NJ. I miss it out there big time. We go out there a lot.

You will love Glenwood – great choice for a vacation!

Far west edge of the Denver metro area here, next to the hogback that starts our foothills up to the Rockies. So fun to see how many CO runners follow you! (Not so fun to realize I am getting old and crunchy and they are almost certainly all faster than me 😂)
