As we were out, we saw my niece (how is she 17 already?!?) doing a MARATHON. She decided the night before to do a marathon and just went for it. She took a running class last semester at school, and she is a CrossFit coach… she is so strong. We found her around town to be her personal aid station and cheerleaders. She tried Maurten gels and LOVED them. She also started fueling at mile 4, she said that helped her so much. And we got to run two miles with her too. We were with my sister and another niece too, it felt like a party the whole time. She DID IT! And now she wants to qualify for Boston. I know she can do it. I’ll be channeling her amazingness during my next marathon.
And now for some tangents…
*The joy that food brings this little boy:
*As you know, the Clifton 8s saved my plantar fasciitis. I run in them at least twice a week, and they are everything I could ever want out of an easy, comfortable running shoe. I tried on the Clifton 9s, thinking I needed to be prepared to buy 5 pairs of them, but… I’m not sure I like them. They are lighter, and I missed the cushioning of the 8s and the pillowlike feel. I felt like these made my foot pronate a little. It felt like they are going for a different type of running shoe with these, but I want the heavy/cushiony feel… I’m not looking for a spring or pop when I reach for my Cliftons, just pure comfort, so it felt like quite a change when these did give me a spring. I might need to try them out again for a real run and not just jogging around the building a few times, but I think this is one of those situations where I just wish they didn’t make any changes. Off to stock up on the 8s.
*My favorite sandwich… a guacamole/chip sandwich.
*This is something I am working on this training cycle. More B+ workouts instead of racing workouts to get an A+! *We cannot recommend the Shotgun bike seat for kids enough. It makes littles feel like they are out with the big kids riding. Beck loved riding around on it with Andrew at the bike park and bringing his dog for the adventure too. PS it is 33% off right now.———————————————————————
Please give me a tangent!
Any running shoes you have tried that just weren’t for you?
Favorite thing at aid stations for you during a race?
Feel free to tell my niece congrats, I’ll tell her to read the comments today:)
My favorite Hoka was the Clifton 3. People were not happy with the Clifton 2 and Clifton 4 (they made huge changes) and people were very vocal. The 3’s and the 5’s were much better, trying to rope those unhappy people back in. After that they kept making small changes to the point I liked them less and less. When you shared the Saucony code, on accident I ordered the Speed 2 and loved them. I bought quite a few more and they are now my go to. They are cushioned and bouncy. Thank you so much for sharing the code. Please feel free to share any new Saucony codes in the future. I haven’t tried the Speed 3 yet but it might be something to consider to replace the Cliftons until the next iteration. 🤷♀️ Everyone’s foot is different so go with what works best for you.
Congratulations to your niece! That is so amazing and so much fun that you could participate.
Well, now I need a pair of the 3’s and 5’s! I am so happy you love the Speed 2 and I am going to find a new code… that one was SO good. Thanks Mary, she is so dang cool. I hope your day is a beautiful one!
Amazing job to your niece!! That’s incredible!! How does she feel today?
The avalanche sight is very cool. You guys have had so much snow this year, and more coming?!! It’s going to make you so much tougher.
I recently tried Hokas at a running store (was there for my son to get new shoes), and they did feel so good on my feet. I am definitely saving for a pair.
Another busy day here, so I am trying to get out for a quick run.
Have a great day!
She said she feels great besides her feet being a little sore! Seriously… Boston will be easy after this winter;) Hope your run was a good one and I’m so happy you aren’t sick anymore. Good luck getting everything done! Thanks, Wendy!
Congratulations to your niece! What an amazing accomplishment! She has a place in my heart because she looks very similar to my niece Ally, who is 20 now. And Ally told me on the weekend she wants to start running! Yaaaayyy!
Congratulations to your niece!! I’ve heard of people running a half marathon without training but a full blown marathon? Wow!!
I wish it were easier to buy older versions of running shoes! On the plus side you can probably get a good discount on them!
Happy Tuesday!
Seriously. I could not believe how physically and mentally strong she is. Yessssss so true, waiting for the 8s to be discounted heavily (I hope)! Happy Tuesday to you, Amy!
Wow!!! Just deciding to do a marathon is next-level :) Unknown & unknowable–way to rock it!
After all of my running years, I still don’t understand why the shoe companies insist on tweaking and changing every year. It’s almost like they don’t realize how runners *are* about their favorite things, LOL!
When I was 17, I was definitely not out doing a marathon and all of the other amazing thing that my niece does! Seriously. Stop changing things. We like routine and consistency…. not change haha. Hope your day is a beautiful one, Corey!
Congratulations HRG niece.
I know you two are related when I read the “night before she decided to run a marathon and went for it”.
You guys are the best!
Oh no, don’t tell me that about the Clifton 9’s!!!! I literally only run in Clifton’s, so that’s terrible news, haha. I need to go try them out.
Also, CONGRATS to your niece! I have so many questions for her – what inspired her to do it on her own? How long did it take? Was it hard? Did she take walking breaks? Can she write a “race recap”?? I love it so much.
I am so so sorry but you might have a completely different opinion on them. Try them and please let me know what you think. That is the best idea ever, I will have her write a recap! Her running class made her love running and she set that goal! She did take a few walk breaks but kept her watch going the whole time for drink breaks etc. I think it was 4:40? Absolutely amazing. I hope you have the best day, Tess!
Did your niece just go out and run a solo, unsupported marathon?! Amazing! Last year when people kept raving about the Asics Novablast I got so excited and bought them, FULL PRICE, which I never do. I wore them for several runs, including a 5k race, and I just couldn’t handle them. They felt like little trampolines, but like trampolines I was about to fly off of. They just felt so unstable. I was so sad to return them, because I really wanted to love them. And now they’re on sale for like half price and I keep wanting to buy them because I can’t pass up a bargain and have to remind myself–No, those shoes did not work for me.
NOOOOOOOO about the trampoline shoes haha. I weirdly like the bounce feel so I’m sorry I told you to get them! Do not try the Superblast ha… even bouncier. Off to go get the novablasts on sale. Yep, I thought she was kidding but then I saw her out going and stalked her the whole way haha. SO incredible. I hope your morning is off to a great start, Kari!
Ugh, I just returned the Clifton’s. I agree with you and for me, they just felt off. I decided to just return to the Brooks Glycerin, which I find super comparable. After my 8 miler this morning in them, I think I made the right choice.
NO WAY… okay, I’m glad I’m not alone. They felt like a completely different kind of shoe than what the 8s are known for. I need to get out my Glycerins again, I forgot how good those felt. Good call and great run. Have a beautiful day, Ali!
WHY do these shoe companies have to change up these shoes so much when they go to the next version. Ugh. I swear this is what caused my plantar faciits in the first place. WHY?!?
On that note, did starting to wear the Nike Vaporfly 2 super shoes aggravate your foot at all? I recently acquired a pair on discount (even though I hate buying Nike stuff) just to see what they are about. However, I am a bit scared to run in them..
I absolutely can see that causing my plantar too. SO frustrating. Caroline, I have no idea why but they didn’t cause any problems with my feet. I tried them when my feet were 100% though, but I am still shocked that they never cause me any problems. Hope you have a beautiful day!
Good for her for running that all on here own!! I hope she got extra credit for her running class!
I HATE when they change running shoes like that. Just the worst. Yes – stock up on those 8’s! Your referral to Hoka’s saved my knees too! Thank you! :)
I feel like Hoka works so hard to solve a lot foot problems with their shoes. But that means that when it doesn’t fit right it REALLY doesn’t fit right. I absolutely love the Bondi X (they are hard to find in stores) they have amazing vision but also a carbon plate. The regular Bondi also has a ton of cushion you may like! I’m in love with Hoka–they saved me after I had my 4th baby
Your niece is amazing! Not many people decide to run a marathon on a whim, but those are my kind of people!! No overthinking it, just go do it! BRAVO!!!!!
Oh Cliftons…..so many changes over the years. I think it was the 3’s that I liked best? Then subsequent ones have been blah. One year they were so stiff it was bizarre! I don’t wear Hoka’s anymore but I feel your struggle with the changes!
Hope Skye’s hands are healed up and no more cactus stinging!
A huge congrats to your niece!! What an amazing accomplishment!
I really appreciate the post from Runners World, I definitely had a B workout today. I can’t even give it a + but I walked away feeling tired, but strong which is definitely better than trashing my legs.
Popsicles/bags of ice are the best during a hot race!
I am afraid I won’t like the Clifton 9s as much either!! I actually use the Clifton 8s as my everyday non-running shoe and I LOVE them!! But I feel like the 9s are not as aesthetically appealing and the colors aren’t as good! I have two pairs of the 8s but missed out on the cream colored ones before they sold out…now they’re probably gone for good…boo!!
Congrats to your niece! Oh to be young and invincible again LOL. She should definitely write a recap!
Wow! Congrats to your niece! What perseverance and strength + she rocks! Also, I totally relate to the Clifton 8 vs 9 thing. I absolutely loved the Brooks Adrenaline 21 and was so excited for the 22s but they were just meh to me. I definitely got another pair of the 21s before they go. Happy Tuesday Janae!

BEST NEWS! I love seeing people fall in love with running. Keep me updated with how she does and if you all are ever in Utah, let’s all get together!
