Tuesday Tangents.

(vest, shirt, pants, shoes, hat)

Another day of running on fresh snow…

I wish the groundhog didn’t see his shadow.

Jo saved me! I realized when we got to our meeting spot that I only brought one glove with me, so Jo brought me a sock that kept my gloveless hand perfectly toasty.

I’ve been strength training consistently for 1.5 years, and a 10-minute core class still leaves me lying on the ground because I’m so tired.
He wants to be comfortable at Trader Joe’s, so he removes his shoes.

Let’s move onto some tangents…

Let’s get talking about some tangents!

*The top 3 finishers for the women at the Mesa Marathon a few days ago were all in their 40s. Heck yes.

*I have a race in less than a month! 3/4! I was supposed to do the Vegas RnR this month, but we couldn’t make it work with Andrew’s work schedule and our kid’s back-and-forth schedules, so I found something new. This one is in St. George, and it’s on the trails, which will involve a lot of hill climbing.

I. Cannot. Wait.

*My parents were over for dinner, and Beck just came over to my mom and put his hand on her back. He stood there for a few minutes. It was so sweet.

*My bloodwork came back, and I was right… low on Vitamin D. My iron and ferritin are normal, which I was happy about!

I’m trying to convince Andrew this means we need last-second tickets to go to Hawaii for my birthday and some Vitamin D.

*Raspberry Kringle from TJ’s= 10/10
*This combo from TJ’s will always be my favorite.
*Beck has been joining me on my strength workouts.
*Monster workout tomorrow… here are the intervals, and I’m praying the roads clear up in time:

Vitamin D tips for me? I’m taking a supplement daily but would love to hear more suggestions!

Who is going anywhere soon? Any trips? To sunshine?

Who has a trail race they are doing this year? Give me the details.

What shoes are you running in today and how would you rate them on a scale from 1-10 (10 being the best shoes you’ve worn)?

I’m so glad you some info regarding why you’ve been feeling off! Taking Vitamin D supplements has always been a huge help to me. Can’t wait to hear more about your trail race in St. George; it looks absolutely beautiful! I’ve been alternating between Brooks Adrenaline and Brooks Ghost for my runs and I love them both! I find the Adrenalines are a little better for longer runs, so I might need to et another pair (my husband does NOT understand the “need” for more running shoes, but he puts up with it, lol). I’m thinking of signing up for a trail race in my home state of Louisiana, but since it’s so hot here, it’s not until November. :) Happy Tuesday Janae!

Hey Emily! Oh the Adrenaline and Ghost are both amazing shoes.. so glad you are loving them and great choices to alternate with. Hahah tell him that he needs to talk to Andrew and they can work through this;). YES YES YES to the trail race near you. I fully support this and I hope you have a beautiful day!

Hawaii seems to be the solution for you low vitamin D.
I’m glad that you found a race that better suits your schedules. You’ll probably like it better anyways because St George and trails!
In the meantime, good luck running on the snow!

Thank you for agreeing with me on Hawaii. I agree, this one is calling me. Have the best day, Molly!

That trail race is going to be awesome!!
I do feel very fortunate to live where I do (most of the time). We get lots of sunshine! If we have a few weeks of rain, I feel tired, sad… Vitamin D is so good for us. Hawaii is the best idea! We were there last March, and I am dying to go back soon.
Feeling better today, but still going to take it easy. No need to push myself, especially since I don’t have any races on the calendar.
Oh, I love that Beck takes his shoes off to be comfortable in TJ’s, ha ha. Adorable

Wendy, I am so glad you are feeling better today. So smart to keep resting though… your body needs it. I need to come visit you each winter for some Vitamin D. I hope you have a beautiful day and keep improving.

Hi Janae! When I was low on vitamin D my doctor had me take 50 IU per week (they make a pill for this you can take once a week) for 6 weeks until I got back to normal, then 2-4 IU per day for maintenance. I think normal daily value is like 1 IU which won’t do anything for you if you’re too low. So you can ask your doctor about that!
So happy your iron and ferritin are normal! Though the threshold for runners is higher than the threshold for regular people so if you’re borderline you might consider eating some more iron rich food anyways.
Have an awesome day!

REALLY… interesting! I will absolutely be asking my doctor about this. I was listening to a podcast yesterday that was talking about that! Off to add in some more iron into my diet (I started a supplement too). Thank you for that help, you are the best. Have a happy Tuesday!

Hi! I had really low Vitamin D at my physical last year. My doc prescribed a very high dose (50k IU) to take daily for a week just to get my levels back up. After that I went back to my daily supplement. Something to consider….excited for you at St. George!!

SO SO interesting! I go back in soon so I will ask for that, what a great idea! Thank you, have the best day!

That kringle is from WI, must be a sign you need to come visit. No extra sunshine here though.

It absolutely is!!!!

Ok, here’s something weird for you – sometimes I only like to sleep with one sock on because I feel like it balances me with heat/cold. So when I run, sometimes I only like to wear one glove because two is just too hot. Haha, I don’t know where that came from, but it’s a quirk of mine!

Also, I served a church mission in Wisconsin and Kringle’s are huge out there. It’s so fun to see them at TJ’s, straight from Racine, Wisconsin! YUM.

This. is. so. interesting. I’ve never heard of someone doing this but I feel like I have to try the sock at night thing… not sure I could do just one glove though ha. Oh that is so fun! My friend says the almond one is the best so if you see that, grab it. Have the best day, Tess!

I live in Canada and Vitamin D is a huge issue here. Medical peeps I know recommended taking Vitamin D in the morning and taking it with fat as it is fat soluble. Also getting outdoors in the sun with your face and bare arms is supposed to help too. I try to add magnesium and calcium and K2 to my supplement mix.

That trail race looks incredible!!! You are doing to be crushing those hills. All the best in your training.
Thanks for your great blog posts. I look forward to them.

Thank you thank you thank you! So interesting to take it with fat, I had no idea. I added magnesium and calcium too, looking at K2! Thank you so much for the help, I hope that spring is coming soon for you all in Canada. That means a lot! Thanks, Katie and I hope you have a great day!

Hey!l. I was also very low on D and my doctor prescribed the 50,000 once a week. I think it really helped me feel better faster. I take a 5,000 pill daily in the winter (Indiana) because the 1,000 just was not enough for me. Look for a yogurt that has a higher D and try to have one every day. Mushrooms, oily fish, cheese, and egg yolks. Unfortunately not a lot of foods have it naturally. Here’s hoping you feel better soon!
Oh…and heck yes to Hawaii!

Really! Oh this is so good to know. I’ll talk to my doctor about this. I’m so excited to know what was going on. Off to grab some yogurt and eat all of the eggs. I hope you get to go somewhere warm soon or that spring is right around the corner for you guys. Thanks Sharon!

Brooks Ghost all the way for me. I’m going to Punta Cana in the Dominican first part of APRIL. I’m so ready.

I fully support a last minute HI trip for your birthday, seems like the very best way to get in some Vitamin D!! I think salmon also has good Vitamin D, so you should probably get some sushi while you’re in HI too!

I recently tried the Hoka Mach 4’s for treadmill running this winter and I LOVE them. We’ve had a ton of snow and ice too so i’ve done more indoor runs than usual and figured some new shoes would motivate me to do it. It’s a silly trick, but so far it’s working so I’ll take it!

And I keep telling myself that winters like this will REALLY REALLY make us appreciate the sunshine and running on dirt again (even if it is June before the snow all melts!).

My foot and ankle doctor recommends sublingual vitamin D because your body is supposed to absorb it better. Being outside for 10-15 min without sunscreen is good too.

I’m flying to TX to see my bestie this weekend, then to the beach the following weekend, then heading to Vegas RNR the next weekend! It’s a fun-filled month!

Trail runs scare me :( I’ve had a few falls so I like pavement a little more.

Today I ran in Saucony Kinvara for an easy run. I would rate them a 7 for an easy day. They’re neutral and cushy, but not too cushy.

I am a long time reader of yours. I was born and raised in Punxsutawney and I definitely have a love/hate for that darn groundhog. I have always struggled with Vitamin D in the winters. I supplement and use one of the lights to try and help. Sunshine is so good for the soul. My son, a Marine, was stationed for a while in Hawaii and those midwinter trips sure helped. I never wasted a second of sunshine while I was there. I am glad to have him closer to home now, but miss my winter dose of sunshine. I say book the tickets!!

HEY KARA! I should try one of those lights. I bet those Hawaii trips to see your son were just what you needed but so glad he is closer now. Thank you for supporting me in this:). Have a beautiful day!
