Maybe that is just because I’ve fed that to my brain for a decade?!

We woke up to this and I’m sure glad we planned on meeting at the indoor track.

While I’d rather be outside, the indoor track makes it so easy to have everything you need right when you need it.

There was a group of seven of us at the track, which made the workout/mileage go by so much faster because there was always someone to chat with and cheer on.

I tried to get creative with this picture to show you that I ran 14 miles, but it didn’t turn out as cool as I had hoped, ha. I have no idea what my paces were for these because my Garmin doesn’t get accurate readings inside, but I know I ran 14 miles.

The workout sounded short, but it was the closest I’ve felt to losing my breakfast in a long time.

3 x 3 min, 2 min, 1 min! 1-minute jog recoveries in the sets and 3-minute jog recoveries in between sets. I’m trying to trick myself into believing I am good at short/fast speeds. The more I tell myself this, the more likely it will happen. I have my brain programmed to think I only like distance speed/races, but maybe that is just because I’ve fed that to my brain for a decade.

70 laps. I’m dizzy. I stayed on the outside lane as much as possible to avoid such sharp turns, and my hips appreciated that decision.

Inspiring story time–> I did my reps yesterday with/chasing my friend, Vince. A lot of my workouts have been with him the last few weeks! He started running at 38 years old, and he is now 51 years old. It is never too late to start working towards things. He is going to sub 2:50 at his next marathon, he recently ran a 100 miler, and he is on fire. His best years of running are now!

The kids all had a snow day, so they were home, and Knox wanted to join me for my leg day Peloton 20-min class.

Hot tubbing was necessary.

This picture is of knox jumping into the hot tub as quickly as possible after hitting Andrew with a snowball.

Beretta ran around like crazy in the backyard

My friend, Kelsey, made me the most delicious birthday month cake ever. The Coconut Kamut Cake is my #1 favorite and the one she made was perfection.

And, I guess they were missing school because they created their own.

Did anyone else start running later than the majority of runners?

Any untrue running things you’ve fed your brain for way too long?

I started running less than 5 years ago, at the age of 30! Pretty cool to know that God willing and my knees don’t give out, I’ll be a better runner at 50 than 20 ;)
Jealous of that hot tub right about now!

Leslie, I LOVE this! Absolutely, we have so so much time to hit our goals. Come over and hot tub with us, please:). Have a great day!

That cakes looks amazing! Where is the bigger white desk in the picture from? I have been looking for a good desk for my 8 year old daughter.

I started running at 47 (10 years ago), and will be running marathon #50 in a couple of months. I’ve got 3 Bostons under my belt, thanks to easier qualifying times for us older chicks. I LOVE running :)

Marathon #50 coming up?! And 3 Bostons! You. Are. My. Hero. Keep inspiring me!

Maybe it’s just me, but training in cold weather can be a real struggle. As a runner, I constantly feel envious of those who are able to train in warmer climates all year round. But the truth is, it’s not always easy to motivate ourselves to train in the cold. The bitter winds, the snow, and the sleet can make even the most dedicated runner want to stay in bed. But despite the challenges, there are ways to make training in the cold more manageable. From layering the right clothes to keeping your feet dry, here are some tips that can help you keep your motivation up during the colder months.

Definitely agree with you! Training in cold weather can be so hard! Have a great day and I hope you get to some warmth soon:)

That cake looks AMAZING! Now I want cake.
Thank you for the link to the Outdoor Voices top–I ordered it for my daughter’s birthday present :)
You all made a great decision on that hot tub, especially since this winter decided to cover you in snow ***

Come on over for some cake! Your daughter is going to love it, I think I’m going to get it in black for Boston! Seriously, that hot tub defrosts us daily. Hope your Thursday is off to a great start!

I also started running at 38, I’m 50 now. It’s never too late!
Hot tubing in the snow is the best!! But hot tubing while it’s raining hard, not the same, ha ha.
I can not imagine running 14 miles on an indoor track! Holy cow! Awesome job. I can’t wait to see how well you do in Boston!
I strength train every Tuesday and Thursday for sure. It is definitely helping the aging process.
Have a good day Janae

Wendy, I LOVE your story and you inspire me so much. Such a valid point, I bring out an umbrella if it is raining when we get in when it is raining! You are rocking your strength training and pilates. Thanks Wendy, you too.

I actually started running at age 41 and that’s when I did my first marathon (really, that was my first real race). I turned 56 yesterday and recently qualified for the NYC Marathon at Rock ‘n Roll AZ coming in 3rd in my AG! So, yes you can keep aging and running and meeting goals!

Beth, HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY YESTERDAY! I hope you got in so much celebrating. Ummm you qualified for NYC… you are incredible. I love reading this and thanks for inspiring all of us. Have the best day!

The school set up is so cute. I used to play school all the time with my sister when I was little and we used laundry baskets for desks.
I love hearing about people who start a sport later in life. At 32, I’m training for my first open water swim this summer. I’ve been swimming with a group of people that do triathlons and it’s inspiring. Maybe one day for me.

Reply

Alicia, I am SO excited for you and your first open water swim this summer. You are inspiring me to try that! I predict triathlons up ahead for you. Keep me updated on the training!

For strength training I highly recommend the Mind Pump podcast and their programming. I am currently doing their MAPS Symmetry program. Don’t pay full price – there are sales for 50% off and then always 60% all programs off on Black Friday. Keep in mind their podcast can be a tad non-pc at times if you are sensitive to that kind of stuff, but I find them highly down to earth. They cover more than fitness -including current events/studies to marriage and raising kids.

All hail us 50+ year olds!! Lol… all you elders able to run at this age are awesome, GREAT JOB!!

That’s awesome, John! Thank you so much for recommending that podcast and their programs to us! I can’t wait to check them out. You all inspire us SO much!

Hi Janae! So many laps!!! Good job!!! We got snow too! I miss the days where we had real snow days and didn’t have to go to work. Now that I work remotely it’s not special anymore. Have an awesome day!

I started running in my 40s but not seriously until my late 50s! Did my first half at 59 and my first full marathon at 61. I am not fast but I love it and love reading your posts for inspiration! Thanks!

Wow, what a sad post. Janae – your commitment to health, focus, and inspiring those around you motivates me every day. I basically consider you a friend (my husband knows you as “you know, the blogger from Utah who broke 3 right before I did?”)
Anyway, I’m here to say you inspire me, you look amazing and healthy. Keep showing up!

Sorry. I didn’t mean your post was sad, Janae… I meant the negative comment was sad. LOL

That cake looks amazing-coconut cake is one of my favorites! I even like that frozen Pepperidge Farms coconut cake!!!

Not a late starter, but I’m 53 and have been running since middle school. Although I think running is the most difficult sport to start, it’s also the easiest because most can literally run from the front door with minimal equipment. Not that I’m minimalist in my running gear, haha, but you can run in almost anything, anywhere. (I’ve run in my scrubs before)

The hot tub on a snowy day just looks dreamy!!

Oh your fresh snow looks so beautiful! We haven’t had any, so I’m a bit jealous. I can imagine you’re done with loads of snow though. I started running 10 years ago at 45, ran my first half five years ago, my second just before Christmas, and I will be running my third in two weeks time! I never thought I could run these distances. (not going to run a marathon, It would take too much time to train for it) So I’m still loving it! Your blog is inspirational! Have a great day!

Great job on your workout!!! So fun you have such a great group of runner friends to train with! And that hot tub and the snow picture makes me want to take a winter vacation to Utah! Have a great day, Janae!

So nice to see a lot of people that started running late in life! I started running in my late thirties, about 10 years ago. I’m getting faster every year and can’t wait for what’s next. I’ve got big goals!

I’ve been doing a pretty intense spin class here every Thursday morning….but, I have time before and after to do strength…so before, I do about a 30 to 45 minute upper body in the gym, after spin, which could be really dumb, but legs…..feels good afterwards eventually.
best cake, Grand Marnier..not sure if my spelling is on, but best ever..

I ran my first ever half marathon at the age of 55. I don’t think it’s ever too late.
