(shoes, shorts, tank, jacket)

Yep, nope. Couldn’t do it. I draw the line here.

I did some yoga before my 7 miles @ 7:50 pace.

I am so inflexible. I want to work on changing that because it will help my hamstrings with running.
Skye got in a mile herself. She can’t stop talking about the track.
I’m HERE for it.
Storytime is his jam.
It was a busy afternoon getting kids to their activities.
Paninis for dinner with guac, cheese, tomatoes, and red onions. Had some tomato soup to warm up too.
Skye put her running clothes out last night for this morning… I wonder where she learned that from?
And just a few more random things…

These kids have thrived this winter. They have sledded and skied more this winter than the last few winters combined. Beretta loves winter too.

Brooke was pretty shocked last night while studying for her test… I still have the preamble memorized from 25 years ago when I learned it. The Schoolhouse Rock version (anyone remember that?) will be stuck in my head my entire life.

If only Schoolhouse Rock could make songs up for me about all of the things I actually need to remember these days..

My brother sent us this picture from above our house; I just thought it was gorgeous.
Here’s to hoping we don’t wake up to 6 inches of new snow so we can do a workout outside… Boston is coming, and I’ve got a lot of work to do!

Also, is it too early for me to compile a list of which Vaporflys I want to buy to wear at the marathon?

Who has a February birthday, anniversary, or race?

-I turn 37 on the 13th!

Where do you draw the line with temperatures for running?

Are you flexible?

-The day I can touch my toes without bending my knees will be a good day.

Does anyone else still wear their high school retainer a few times a month?

I am always so impressed with your morning runs. What time do you wake up and what time are you running? I need some inspo!! My birthday is on the 25th so I love February :) And I also can’t touch my toes, must be a Feb birthday thing ;)

Hey Colleen!! Happy birthday month! Such a good month to be alive:). I don’t like to share my times online for safety reasons but it’s early:). I try to get in some work before or household things, so I get up early… but I love having those uninterrupted hours! YOU CAN DO IT! My whole day goes better when I do it.

So I once ran when it was -36 degrees Celsius outside with windchill but didn’t realize it was quite that cold. I couldn’t figure out why even the dog walkers weren’t out and when I got home I looked up the temperature haha.

I did yoga a few times a week during a period when I was injured and couldn’t run. It definitely helped with flexibility! Not sure I could do all those poses now lol.

Happy Feb birthday and happy training!

haha Schoolhouse Rock is awesome! I still remember so many things thanks to SHR, and now that I’m a teacher, my students love when I sing the songs or show videos of the show. :) I love looking at the beautiful snow covered mountains in your pictures, but I’m hoping it lets up soon so you can get more outdoor workouts in! Also, what is it about your food pictures? I am not a sandwich person, but that panini has me craving a warm sandwich and a cup of tomato soup! Happy Wednesday, Janae!

I loath the treadmill so have become pretty flexible in what I consider suitable winter running weather. I live in Kansas so we don’t get much snow – just cold, cold mornings. I’ve learned there are a few other things to look at when determining if outside is bearable for a run: (1) Wind speed. I also live in the country so it’s flat and wide open. There are few places to hide from the wind and cold wind hitting your face is just horrible, and (2) Humidity. I will take a cold, dry morning over a warmer more humid morning anyway. That extra moisture in the air can be a killer!

I agree with this 100%. I can be happy as a clam running in 15° sunny weather and miserable if it’s 55 and super windy. As for humidity. I’ll still run in it….. but I’ll complain the whole time ; )

That picture looks fake!! It’s so cool!

I’m not flexible but I am working on my strength and can already feel the benefits. It’s so annoying when all that good advice turns out to be true ; ) ha.

Hey! just wanted to give you a yoga teacher perspective on flexibility if you don’t mind? I love that you are doing yoga! but, did you know that you doing strength and mobility work is far better than being flexible? When I teach yoga to athletes I always remind them to focus on strength versus stretch. A strong muscle is a trusting muscle, typically when we feel we need to “stretch” it out, there is an injury on the horizon that needs strength to remedy that. I realize some teachers might disagree with me, but I would say to focus on range of motion, mobility in your joints, and strength. Being able to touch our toes with straight legs is over rated ;)

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for taking the time to help me. I had no idea that was the case. This was just what I needed. Going to focus on those things to help my hamstrings and letting go of that goal of touching my toes ha. Have a beautiful day, Danielle!

I turn 54 on February 3rd! And I am not flexible at all. At all…

HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY IN TWO DAYS, JACKIE! I’ll eat some cake that day to celebrate you!

Oh my goodness that picture is stunning!!
Ya, 3°?? Way too cold! If we’re in Colorado during the winter, I may go out for a run if it’s in the high 20’s, maybe… I have definitely lost my weather toughness being in California all these years, ha ha.
I loved School House Rock as a kid too. I think I played a couple of the videos for my boys when they were little. I still remember the “I’m just a bill…” song.
Panini’s sound so good. I may need to copy you for our dinner tonight.
I have a pretty open day today, so I think I’ll take my run down to the river trail. I haven’t done that in so long!
I’m crossing my fingers that you’re able to get your workout done today!
Have a good day Janae 😊

My brother’s birthday is the 13th! and my son’s is the 15th! lol
I haven’t run in anything under 29* but I am in the South, so it doesn’t get too terribly cold here
Happy to report I am semi-flexible! But definitely need to work on mobility

Too coincidental – I saw this advertised last night!

Bahaha no way! What are the odds ha. So funny!

Yesterday my run was 4 degrees. The sun was out though which makes all the difference!
Have you done any of the Peloton strenth sessions? Those are so helpful.
And during a run last week “conjuction junction what’s your function” popped into my head. School House Rock really knew what it was doing!

Hi Janae! That picture is gorgeous! It’s seriously something you can frame! I can’t touch my toes.. but I am pretty flexible for Al the other poses! I used to feel bad about it then saw a post about how many professional runners can’t touch their toes either!
Have an awesome day! Hope the weather gets better!

Have you tried the hamstring stretch with a dog leash? That helps my hamstring out more than anything!

Reply

Yes to the high school retainer. Haha!

What will we ever do if we lose these????

I have a race on the 12th and I turn 38 on the 27th! I am ready to celebrate all month!

I can put my hands flat on the floor without bending my knees, but that has more to do with me having short legs and a longer torso I am sure. I need to work on hip flexibility for sure.

I want to work on my lack of flexibility this year as well. When I did yoga more consistently I was much more flexible.
I still wear my retainers at night, although they’ve been replaced multiple times because they crack. I think when I got retainers I started grinding my teeth so I wear them to protect my teeth now and also it feels weird if I’m in bed without wearing them now.

February birthday club here too (the 10th)! We had temps around 0 this week, feels like -7, and that was far too cold to run. I had to walk the dog and I had on so many layers I could barely walk let alone run, hah!

I feel like as I’ve gotten older I have to work more on flexibility and mobility in order to stay healthy for running and cycling. And I was having trouble with my hamstring and kept trying to stretch it and roll it out with a ball, but what really made a difference was strengthening it. I was doing Dr. Lisa PT’s hip program and it included a lot of hamstring work in the later sessions, and all the sudden my hamstring improved dramatically. She has online programs that I think are so worth the money, but also a lot of free tips and exercises on Instagram, and she focuses almost solely on runners. I live in a ski town with pretty world class physical therapists given all the ski injuries, and her programs are very similar to what i was doing at the local PT, but hers are modified to do at home with limited equipment (mostly weights are resistance bands).

Thank you so much for telling me about Dr Lisa on IG… I just went through so many of her posts and want to be doing all of her tips. Definitely going to have to check out her hip program. I’ll pay whatever it takes to get these hammies working better. Have the best day, Michelle!

Happy early birthday!! The snow is so pretty. I wouldn’t know what to do with it though since I was born, raised, and currently residing in SoCal.

I draw the line at over 100 degrees for running. The coldest it gets here is the high 20s. Today was super chilly at 31. Ha. You would probably laugh at what I wear in that compared to you (mittens, pants, warm shirt with a hood!).

I’ve really been working on stretching and icing after hard runs and it’s definitely helping me to be more flexible.

I purchased a new plastic retainer after weraing my metal one for over 10 years. I probably wear it 5 out of 7 nights. Ha. My teeth try to move back so quick!

I ran in 0 here in MN today, was -1 when we finished at 5:30am! Usually I hate hate hate winter running- but trying to get in a few outdoor ones. Just 2 layers of pants (legging and thick wind pants) 2 pairs of socks, a long sleeve, sweatshirt and a running jacket. Then of course have to have the gaiter that covers your head and a hat – oh and a pair of gloves and mittens. And don’t forget about the Yak tracks on the shoes. IT IS RIDICULOUS THE PREPARATION AND LAUNDRY THAT GOES INTO WINTER RUNNING! I opt for my treadmill and also will not do long spring races because MN does not let you prepare well!!

High school retainers – would still be wearing them if I didn’t lose them during my divorce…no idea how!? Anyhow – I had new ones made!

Have a great Wednesday!!!!!

Happy birthday month!! I was excited to get out for my run this morning at 0 degrees F HA after the past 4 mornings being in the negatives – I am in Minneapolis. It always amuses me that after a stretch of below-zero temps, with even colder windchills, anything above 0 feels warm to me! I love all the snow you all are getting. We skied at Snowbird and Snowbasin mid-January and the powder was amazing! Hoping you can get outside for a workout soon. I am waiting for all the ice to melt here so I can really dive into my training for Grandma’s

My birthday is Friday! And I have a 10k race the next day so it’s a pretty great upcoming weekend!

Typically during marathon training I would get knots in my hamstring and so tight that I received ART therapy weekly. This training I added hyperbolic stretching and absolutely no hamstring issues week 8 of training . I purchased the program at Hyperbolicstretching.com
I turn 45 on February 8th. Happy Birthday month!

I have a birthday coming up this month too. 49 on the 28th. Ugh, I’m with you. I cannot touch my toes without bending at the knee’s. Then my daughter’s friend is like Gumby, the way that girl can bend is amazing ! For me, I tend to cut off the temps in the low 30’s. I fully admit I’m a whimp and will have no problem with the treadmill in our garage. But I will say, it has a lot to do with the wind. I whimp out way faster when that wind is blowing. With no breeze I can even handle the 20’s. That picture your brother took is beautiful. That should be hung up on a wall. So neat.

Another February birthday here! I’ll be 45 on the 20th. New age group!! (I can touch my toes, but I used to be a yoga instructor so maybe that’s my excuse)
