Does Anybody Remember + Week 9 of Boston Training!

(shorts, tank, long-sleeve)

I was a bit nervous about this workout and attempting to keep up with Tawny and Kassi. They both ran at BYU and are insanely fast. Kassi ran for Nike and trained with Deena Kastor, Ryan, and Sara Hall… I somehow kept them in my eyesight during the intervals, so I’m calling that a win. The fitness is coming along.

Vince was also with us (my friend that I told you started running in his late 30s and is now 51 and having the best running of his life)!

About an hour before we started running, I had an ego waffle/pb/raspberry sandwich and some perk energy (it has some protein and caffeine). I’m trying to get in a meal an hour before my runs rather than right before to have a happier stomach. It worked!
These shorts are magic. I stuffed 4 gels in them, and my phone and they never budged; I pretty much wear them for every long run. I have a detailed fueling post going up this week, but I took one gel 5 minutes before the run and then at miles 4, 8, 12, and 16.
Our water breaks in the winter, ha. I’m telling ya, it works nicely, and none of us have gotten sick yet;)

Twenty miles and so much climbing. The details from the run are below this picture!

Week 9 Boston Training:

Monday:  13.23 miles @ 8:21 average & 2.16 miles @ 9:47 average pace with my niece later.

Tuesday:  8 miles @ 8:35 average

Wednesday:  14 miles on the indoor track (70 laps!).  W/u + 3 sets of 3 min, 2 min, 1 min fartleks, and 1-minute jogging recoveries within the sets and 3-minute jogging recoveries between sets. I went based on effort for these and didn’t keep track of paces because I used my watch to keep track of how many laps we were doing.

Thursday: 8.1 miles @ 8:20

Friday: 5 miles @ 8:33 pace

Saturday:  20 miles @ 7:14 average with 1853 ft of climbing.  My coach put together quite the course for us-> we were exhausted at the end.  W/U, climb a huge hill for .6 miles, 3-mile tempo (5:54 average- mostly down), .7 recovery jog, 1.2-mile uphill push (and my 2nd fastest time ever on this segment after doing it a million times!), 1-mile recovery jog, 1 downhill mile (5:30), 2-mile recovery jog, .6 mile huge hill, 3-mile tempo (5:46 average- mostly down), c/d.

Sunday:  Off!

70.70 miles for the week.

I came home to Curly and the kids:) Andrew worked all weekend, so she made it possible for this 20 miler to happen.

PS anybody remember when I blogged about Curly when she was this little…
The rest of the weekend was spent doing the usual things.

We made forts and put every toy in the house on the ground.

Andrew brought me an egg burrito that hit the spot.
We also made beignets!

They were so good.

And so was this pasta primavera!

Happy Monday!

Tell me some highlights from your weekend!

Have any nieces or nephews that live near you?

That picture of Curly made me want to go back to Disneyland… so for those of you that have been to both Disneyland and Disneyworld, I need to hear which one you think is better.

Breakfast before a run—> how long before you start running do you eat?

-On big days I want to eat about an hour before with a gel right before and on normal days I’m eating in my car on the way to the run.

Hi Janae, I love the Lane Five shorts, too, they’re amazing! Just curious where you put your phone? The pouch in the back drives me nuts because of the bouncing and I’m alway afraid it’s going to chafe my lower back. I still have to use a Koala Clip or pocket bra when I wear them.

Reply

Hey Shelby! I love that you love them too. Ohhhhh boo to the bouncing. I usually use my koala clip too but for some reason, my phone does great in the back pocket. Maybe I bought mine tighter? Hope your day is off to a great start!

so much snow!
I need about 2 hours, no matter the distance or effort. My stomach just has to settle.
I have 10 nieces and nephews…….the oldest is 5 and the youngest is 2 months. I am totally fine to never have kids, ha!

Today is my birthday so I am preparing for all the fun things this week, including a 5k Saturday and a half marathon on Sunday!
Gonna be a full week. Kinda wanted to run today on my birthday, but with the taper and work today, it works better as a rest day. But I got some good stretching in which will definitely help with the race weekend.

Have a great day!

HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY and you are celebrating the best way possible this weekend. I hope you have a great day at work too. Thanks Loribeth, I’ll celebrate you by eating some treats:)

I don’t live near my nieces, but thank goodness for FaceTime so I can see them!

Highlights from the weekend include making carbonara for dinner with my boyfriend (I was so glad the eggs didn’t scramble!!), getting in a long run with friends, and doing a puzzle.

How did we all survive before FaceTime? I don’t want to ever go back to that. Carbonara is so tricky to make, way to go! Hope your Monday is off to a great start, Mariah!

1. I love how you have so much snow. In the South, it’s the winter that never was. 74 degrees today. On the one hand, that’s amazing, but I also like a little bit of real winter.
2. DISNEYLAND! I just went to Disneyland for the first time with a group of moms for a 40th birthday celebration. Disneyland was so lovely. Disney World is enormous and people from like 10 different states can drive there, so it’s horribly crowded. I’d go back to Disneyland soon!

Can we switch places for a week? 74 degrees sounds heavenly today. I love that you went with a group of friends for a 40th birthday. I think I might have to copy that idea. Enjoy the sun today for me:). Thanks Marianne!

Disney World is much better. In Disneyland it feels like everything is crowded together. It also felt like there was less to do. And honestly, the cast (or whatever they call the people who work there) seemed so much nicer and more helpful at Disney World than at Disneyland. I’d taken my kids to Disney World 3 times before we went to Disneyland so the snark from the people at Disneyland was kind of shocking but also hilarious.

You are making me want to book a trip to Disney World right now! Have a beautiful day Allison!

Had a great weekend, currently staying in Fruita, CO and my husband and I discovered 2 (of so many) great trail runs!!

Question…. Our next destination is St George, any recommendations on trail runs and mountain biking for us?!

Thanks!!!

Reply

Sounds like you and your husband are having a blast. Can we come join?! I’m so happy you are going to St. George next. I will get a list of Andrew’s favorites but running in Snow Canyon is the prettiest. I love Church Rocks too! Andrew knows way more about the trails so I’ll have him get back to you:). Enjoy and let me know what you think!

Hi Janae! Yay for another week of training done!! I think an hour before is my sweet spot too! I wish my nieces and nephews lived near me! I’ll have to make to do with my friends kids.
Happy Monday!

An hour before just feels right! I hope you get to see your nieces and nephews soon and I your friend’s kids are so lucky to have you. Thanks Amy, you too!

Those Beignets look amazing and I am soooo IMPRESSED with your friend Vince. I am 60 and will Never hit my paces in my 50’s but I am happy to still be running.

You inspire all of us! Karen, you are amazing. Keep me updated with your running and I hope you have a beautiful day!

Well we got a dump of snow…we took River to a local park for a couple hours and she lost her mind. I also managed to get in a short run on the one clear path. We put the deposit down for the wedding photographer so things are coming together.

I can only eat dry bagels before a run lol.

My nieces live a 1 hour flight from us but we get to face time semi regularly.

Have a fantastic day Janae!

I bet River was in heaven! Yay for a run too and ahhhhh your wedding is getting closer. Thank goodness for FaceTIme! Thanks Kristine, you too!

Ok, I was thinking about you this weekend on my long run because it was my first time trying out a hydration pack on a run. Do you hide waters and just make sure you have some along the way? Because I don’t think I like carrying water in any form at all. Haha, yikes for me! I have nephews a few hours away and I wish that I lived down the street from them (also my sisters kids, so that’s a special relationship when I’m also close to my sister).

Reply

Hey Tess! Uggg I am with you, I hate carrying water too. It takes out the fun for me! We either plan our routes around drinking fountains or plant bottles around our route. We have never had a problem with the waters being gone when we get there so try it out. And in the winter… we just eat snow ha. I totally understand, just a special bond with sister’s and their kids. I hope you get to see them soon. Have a beautiful day, Tess!

I remember little Curly!

Highlight of the weekend = snow in So Cal! I could see it on the hills when I ran yesterday morning. So pretty!

My twin nieces (+ my great nephew) life about 200 miles away – too far! Les’ are even farther, including a nephew who is spending a semester in New Zealand.

Native Californian here – so I’m going to choose Disneyland. I still remember “E” tickets ;)

I can only stomach gels before my runs (I can’t even eat a later dinner the night before a long run without it messing with me.)

Reply

Please bring back paper Fast Passes!! LOL, will never happen. Definite advantage to us runners back in the day. You actually had to work to get your passes. Fast Pass Runners ftw! I had so much fun doing that.

Reply

I LOVED the Fast Passes! We would sprint back and forth hahah. Have a great day, John and thanks for reminding me of a fun memory!

Reply

My parents tell us about the E tickets too… so fun! I told you that was their first date, right?! YAY for snow in your mountains. I hope you get to see your nieces and nephews soon. Have a beautiful day, Kathy!

Amazing support system! Yay to Curly. And Janae… just because you did not have the opportunity to train at Nike doesn’t mean that you are not at that level. You deserve to be with those ladies! Great job on the workout. You are fantastic and absolutely equal to those that you admire.
I used to love making forts. So much fun. Highlight from the weekend was the sun finally returned to Southern California! It was a rough stretch :-)

Today I have a virtual book club that I am looking forward to meeting up with! We read “the sweetness of water”. It was good though I’m not sure that I would necessarily recommend it. I love book clubs because they make me read something I wouldn’t normally pick up! And the discussions are always intriguing. And make my brain work in a different way.

Reply

Oh thank you, Amanda! That sure means a lot to me:). YAY for some sun after so much rain in S. California. I need to come visit you. I am so with you, I definitely have a type I gravitate towards and book club gets me out reading new things too. Enjoy tonight and let me know what you read for next month!

thanks for sharing how you incorporate fueling and when you eat. I’ve always wondered and it’s helpful to learn from experienced runners.

Yes! Let me know if you have any questions and I have a detailed fueling post going up on Wednesday!

I remember little Curly! It’s amazing how fast time flies.

TOO FAST! I swear the same thing is happening with Brooke, too. Have a beautiful day and thanks for being my friend over the years, Kathee!

you’ve got to be kidding about the sucking up the snow right?……lol……

Just curious..is Curly her real name, or a nickname because she has such cute curly hair? I’ve just never heard that name before so I’m curious! :)

Reply

She is Curly????? Oh my I feel old :)

On big workout days, I’ll eat a dry eggo waffle and have an applesauce pouch, plus coffee 30 minutes before I start working out.
And another question:where did you source the cushions on your bench in your living room? Are they custom? Would love a link!

Reply

Hey Amanda! Ego waffles for the win! We went to a local upholstery shop in our area. Are you in utah?
