Stuck. Fancy. First.

(leggings, shirt, shoes)

Seven miles @ 8:24 pace with 10 minutes of core for runners before the run.

Something valuable I’ve learned about Beck is that I need to have breakfast ready for him when I get him out of his crib. He is not interested in sitting and waiting for me to make something. He wakes up hangry!

The girls got in some rock climbing.
And Skye had her first day of dance!

It felt like it had been quite some time since we last hung out. Andrew has been very busy with trainings, work, and school.

My parents wanted to take us to Zao’s for dinner. Beck is so obsessed with my dad.
Their rice bowls speak to my soul.

Just a few random (aka another tangents post) things to talk about before we say our goodbyes today.

*I CANNOT WAIT TO LISTEN TO THIS.

*I’ve stuck to two New Year’s Resolutions this year… I’m OFF soda. If you live in Utah or have ever visited, you know how big of a deal soda is for Utahns. There are soda stores every half of a mile. The main reason I quit is that I don’t drink as much water when I drink soda. I also feel so much better without it.

*My other New Year’s Resolution–> I have unsubscribed from probably 200 different email subscriptions. I’ve always been too lazy to unsubscribe from companies I ordered from like a decade ago, but this was the year that I’ve finally worked to unsubscribe.

*Beck is extremely fancy. For example, he refuses to eat fruit snacks any other way than in a bowl with a fork.
*Boston updated my race time ahhhh… PS how long will those 29 seconds haunt me?
*She seriously is a teenager these days.

Soda or pop (or something else)? What do you call it?

Does anyone take Magnesium? Give me the details….

Tell me about your email inbox? Organized? Overflowing with junk mail?

Any new years goals that you have stuck to so far?

Oh my, that picture of Skye in her dance leotard is just precious; I hope she has a blast at dance class! I’m so excited about that new podcast with Des and Kara. Also, have you read Lauren Fleshman’s new book, Good for a Girl? I have the audiobook queued up on my phone; can’t wait until Saturday’s long run to really dig into it. I take the Natural Calm magnesium powder and I’ve found it helps with muscle ramping/soreness (I get very crampy, restless legs at night sometimes). I definitely recommend easing your way into it (dosage wise) because it caused me digestive issues the first few days I took it (nothing awful, but I just NEEDED to be near a bathroom at the drop of a hat). But after those few days, it was fine. My New Year’s goal has been to move my body in an enjoyable way every single day. I find that in the past I tended to push too hard some days and then not want to move at all other days. Now I’m focusing on doing enjoyable and manageable workouts daily, even if it’s just yoga and a walk. Happy Wednesday Janae!

I just finished Lauren Fleshman’s book… you are going to LOVE IT. I want every runner to read/listen to it… I think it is going to help change a lot of things. So good to hear that the powder was able to help with muscle ramping/soreness! Thank you for the tip. I absolutely LOVE your goal for this year. What a wonderful way to honor exactly what your body needs each day. Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a beautiful day, Emily!

I take a magnesium supplement called Remag that I buy from Amazon. You mix half a teaspoon into your water. It doesn’t taste great, but at that dilution you hardly taste it. I’ve tried various forms of magnesium and I like this one the best. I have also used Calm powder in the past and I like that stuff too, but since I’m doing intermittent fasting I don’t use the Calm powder (which is flavored, and yummy!) during my fasting window.

Reply

Allison, thank you so much for sharing! I’m going to check out Remag… that sounds awesome. Have a beautiful day!

I’m trying to be better about asking for help, and I’ve been working at it consistently this year! Little wins :)
It’s good to see your dad! I hope he’s feeling well. So cute the connection he has with Beck. Enso loves my dad so much (he calls him Dziadzi… Polish for grandpa) and he will just randomly start saying Dziadzi, Dziadzi! during the day. Melts my heart. Have a great day, Janae!

Reply

That is a great goal… isn’t it funny how scary it is to ask for help yet our people are so eager to help when we ask?! I love that Enso has a connection with your dad and that he calls him Dziadzi! SO SO CUTE. Thank you, we feel so lucky to have my dad with us still! Hope your day is a great one too, Courtney!

It’s pop not soda! That’s what everyone in the Midwest calls it and now living on the East Coast people always find it so strange but it’s definitely pop haha. I’ve started unsubscribing from emails and it is SO NICE! Why did we not do this earlier?!

Reply

Hahaha isn’t it funny how different we all are with this?! Seriously…. I don’t know why I’ve let them build up the way they have. It has driven me crazy for years. I hope you have the best day, Maureen!

Clearly Beck has seen you make many fruit salads (ahem) and naturally he wants to eat it from a bowl like you would for real fruit salad.
Those 29 seconds will only haunt you until you run a 2: 36:59. I feel it!!

Reply

YOU FIGURED IT OUT… I’ve been wondering why he requests the bowl haha. Ummmmm that would be INCREDIBLE!!! Thanks Molly for believing in me. You are the best. I hope your day is off to a great start!

Oh, so good to see your Dad!!!

This Michigander had to give up her pop, too. Heh. I’ll have one on occasion, but they are few and far between.

I bought some Magnesium because I’ve heard that it has so many benefits, not the least of which is helping you sleep. But then I’ve heard issues with taking too much so I’m a little worried about how to start. Confused.

Reply

Here’s my question… how do you have one occasionally? I feel like if I had one ‘pop’ occasionally, I would be back in to 1200 a day;). I can’t imagine a middle ground ha. Ohhhhh shoot…other issues than GI problems? I’m trying to figure this all out too! Hope your day is a beautiful one (and the weather is treating you well this winter in Michigan)! Thanks Wendy!

Happy Wednesday! That rice bowl looks delicious. We are making the Soba Noodle salad with peanut sauce from the Run Fast Eat Slow cookbook tonight. Can’t wait to try it!
I am a Minnesotan, so it’s pop all the way. :) I haven’t drank it since high school, but I am still adamant about personally calling it pop!
I am inspired by your inbox clean-up – I need to do more of that than I do.. that would save me the time I spend deleting them! I have stuck with my wake-up-super-early routine to get my day going, which I started in December, and is a great time to accomplish any of my New Year’s ideas of things I want to do. The gift of extra time is worth the early bedtime.

Reply

Okay, I’ve been wondering about that recipe… you’ll have to let me know how it turns out! GOOD FOR YOU to not drink pop since high school and I will respect you for calling it pop ha. Right?! How do we go so long without unsubscribing? I feel like they make me buy more things too which is a problem ha. Way to go getting up early, it’s not easy but always worth it. Have a beautiful day!

Reply

I always said pop growing up but I try to say soda as its seems the more accepted term – and I need to kick my habit for the same reason – I don’t get enough water in me!

I try to unsubscribe to unnecessary emails as I do not like a messy inbox. I only want to see the items I still need to tend to.

Regarding new years goals:
I am still using my waterpik every day
I am still doing my bible study every day
and I am still taking the time to untie my shoes when I take em off =]

Enjoy your day Janae!

When I was pregnant I would get horrible calf cramps and my midwife told me to take between 400-500 mg Magnesium every night. It worked like a charm and I still take it every night (just swallow a supplement) for sore muscles after a workout, it’s calming effect and helps me sleep!

Reply

I grew up in Illinois saying pop and then when I went to college in Buffalo people would make fun of me for saying pop so I adjusted to saying soda. Although I have never been a big soda drinker. It was mainly a treat on airplanes or going out to eat. I’m not a big carbonated drink fan, but I do like a sparkling water now and then.
I take the calm magnesium powder every night before bed. My husband uses the calm powder with an electrolyte powder and a 1/2 tsp of lite salt for a hydration drink. I swear it’s magic! If you are feeling dehydrated, drink a glass of that and it really helps. I made it for my friend once when she was feeling really tired too and she said she felt better after drinking it.
Last year I finally did a bunch of unsubscribing and feel like I get less emails now and it’s wonderful.

It’s so good to see your dad!
It’s soda, but I grew up calling it pop. So funny.
I have stuck with 2 goals so far this year. First is drinking more water. I’m using a hydration app that helps keep me accountable. The 2nd is doing some sort of workout (rest days I do yoga or a good stretch) every day. Both are making me feel really good!
I can’t wait to listen to that podcast too!! Very cool those got together to do it.
Have a great Wednesday!

How did you give up soda? My BF has a serious coke zero addiction which he wants to quit but can’t find the right substitute (I think it will be easier for him to give it up if he has a swap for something instead of going cold turkey). Seltzer isn’t cutting it. Thx!

Reply

Soooo I kind of have a cheat… Having a race motivates me to do whatever I need to get to my goal. I feel like drinking more water and zero soda will help me get to that goal but I’m not sure how I would quit it without the running goal!?! I drink a lot of bai coconut drinks to help with the caffeine, liquid IV to make my water taste special and those are my only replacements. Yesterday we walked by the chic-fil-a in the mall and I had to have Brooke (she hates all soda ha) talk me through not stopping for one. It is hard… the addiction is real. Good luck to your boyfriend and I hope you have a beautiful day!

My kids wake up hangry, too! How much longer does Andrew have in school? He’s going to be so relieved to have it over with, I’m sure!
I call it “pop” (western NY) and my grammie in northern NH used to call it “tonic.”
A word of caution on the magnesium — it relaxes muscles but those muscles can also include those of the GI tract. I can’t tolerate it because I have digestive issues as it is. Some people swear by it for muscle soreness and sleep, though!
Have a great day, Janae. I’m doing a long run this evening, and will listen to the Kara/Des podcast through some of it — can’t wait!

Hi Janae! I took magnesium for about a year! It helped me with my period cramps. I got the pills from Costco. The idea was you can take as many as your body tolerates. Your body will let you know if it’s too much because you will have loose stools/diarrhea if you take too much. I usually took 250 mg or 375 mg sometimes. It definitely made a difference for me and I only stopped a month or two ago because I feel like now that I’m better I want to try to get more of my vitamins from food. There are also different forms of magnesium that are absorbed differently by the body. I think I tried magnesium citrate and magnesium glycate and it didn’t really make a difference for me though. Sorry if this is TMI with too many details! I hope you figure out what works for your body!
Have a great day!

I can relate to Beck, I only wish someone would make me breakfast and have it ready when I wake up 😉

I take a Vitamin D and Magnesium combo supplement from Rainbow Light. It’s a whole food supplement that you can take with or without food, which I feel like is easier than trying to always take it with a meal!

My junk mail inbox is in a constant state of overflow. I probably have 10000+ emails in there. Guess I should do something about that 🤦🏼‍♀️

I haven’t gotten my confirmation about my updated qualifying time from Boston yet! Hopefully I will get it this week, it’s a 5-minute time difference!

Have a great day, Janae!!

We call it soda lol, but the rest of Alabama calls it pop

I took magnesium when I was pregnant to help with cramps AND sleep! I swear it helps me sleep so much better too, I just finished mine so need to get more. But I love it as a sleep helper and muscle restorer!

Goals – sticking with getting outside (1000 hours) daily and especially on the weekends with the kids. Once training wraps up I plan on getting to the next goal which is hiking with the kids more! :D

I just started taking Natural Calm gummies at night this year. My biggest goal was to minimize anxiety, and it’s definitely helped with that, as well as sleep. I was super nervous about all of the “warnings” about digestive issues at the beginning, so I started taking it when I was still off work for the holidays. I had zero issues, and I feel a lot better! I forgot to take it one night last week and was back to my normal annoying insomniac ways. I think it’s made a huge difference for me!

My other resolution was making my bed every day. It seems so silly, but it does make me much happier to walk into my room and it be at least somewhat put together!

Reply

It’s pop. I don’t drink it anymore, but soda is just not right.
Nice to see your dad, he’s sweet with Beck.
Trying to take my cholesterol medicine consistently, I am so much better when I leave the bottle on my pillow, so I take it before bed.
My inbox is too full, too many emails, trying to purge and unsubscribe. I hate that there are so many.

I take Magnesium Glycinate by Pure Encapsulations. This type of magnesium is also great for sleep. In addition to magnesium I also take Thorne Trace Minerals, especially when I have an increase in training intensity and volume. Didn’t you recently have blood work done? Of course I take some other vitamins, but you didn’t ask that ;)

That rice bowl looks AMAZING! So many great textures and flavors. Yum.

So what is Utahns favorite soda? Growing up we called it Pop. My parents would only buy Hansens grapefruit or mandarin soda for special times for us kids. My dad favored RC Cola on popcorn night. We rarely had soda growing up and I can’t remember the last time I had one. Here in Europe they have gobs of brands of plain bubbly water so that’s my main non-flat water drink. Also, the soda here is wayyyyy less sweet. They are also into “schorle” which is juice blended with bubbly water. You can buy a variety case of schorles and they range from orange and lemon to pomegranate and apple. It’s basically like having sparkling cranberry juices but not sweet like Martinelli’s. That was a very long version of “soda” vs “pop.”

I take the Calm powder every night! I’ve been taking it since the third trimester of my first pregnancy (apparently a lot of women become very magnesium deficient while pregnant) and it helped my restless legs. We buy the raspberry lemon flavor and it is actually pretty decent!

In Texas we don’t call it soda or pop. It’s either coke (for all types of drinks) or a soft drink.

Love the picture of Skye ready to dance. One of our nieces is a senior this year and has been dancing since she was about Skye’s age. She was the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Nutcracker this year and she was stunning!

Les grew up calling everything “Coke.” i.e. “You want a coke? Yes, do you have any Mountain Dew?” I call everything by the actual name – Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, etc.

It’s amazing how many times I have to unsubscribe to sites. My email is super organized (over 50 folders) – can’t handle it otherwise.

I’ve kept all my resolutions… oh wait, I didn’t make any!

Reply

I just commented I was surprised no one had said “coke” yet! I’m with Les.

Reply

Surprised no one has mentioned it yet – I call it “coke.” All of it, sprite = coke, pepsi = coke, etc. I think it’s a southern thing. Obviously, if at a restaurant we order by name, but in general, “I’m craving a coke!” could mean any soft drink. My grandmother actually says “coca cola” and she usually wants a “sundrop.” :)

Oh my goodness I feel like I am CONSTANTLY unsubscribing from email lists. Good for you for being on that bandwagon!

And I really loved seeing that picture of Beck and your dad. I hope he is doing well these days. :)

As for SODA (despite having been born in Ohio and living there in my early childhood and then living in Missouri for 5 years + Kansas for 1 year–all of which are clearly “pop” territory), you know what? I had my literal last diet coke on February 6, 2013. So it has been a few weeks shy of 10 years since I have had a diet coke!

The funny thing? Sometimes I have a deep, DEEP craving for one. I loved the way it tasted, and the feeling of the fizzy bubbles hitting the back of my throat, and pretty much everything about it except how it made my mouth feel after the fact (and now that I am in my mid-40s, I bet if I were to try to drink one it would just give me heartburn…because it seems like everything does…)!

I never took Magnesium until a couple of months ago. I had vaguely heard of it as being good for recovery, but I didn’t pay attention. And I somehow thought that my teaching group fitness classes and doing my own workouts wasn’t STRENUOUS ENOUGH to require legit “recovery” stuff beyond the occasional pounding on my calf and quad muscles with my hypervolt. BUT, since my body started to feel like crap about a year ago and I decided in late November to start seeing a functional medicine practitioner, she asked me to take magnesium every day. I take two pills each night after I finish eating dinner. I’m not saying that this entirely contributed to my just recently being able to get my performance back up to where it should be when I teach my classes (my apple watch output had consistently TANKED for literally 9 months, getting me at–one a good day–HALF of the output that had become my standard,..), but I will believe that it has contributed to me starting–bit by bit–to feel less like a totally heavy, dead brick after each workout AND like I can’t get myself to push to any level of intensity when I teach (or when I want to practice so hard that I understand how my class participants should feel on the bike).

Whatever is starting to work–I’m keeping it going. Because even though my insides have a lot of healing to do (my labs show that my adrenal glands are not even operating at 10% of where they should be…no wonder I have been so lethargic no matter what time of day it is or how my sleep was the night before…), I feel a small bit of progress (even if my body doesn’t show little bits of progress in my appearance/size/weight/etc.). And that progress is positively impacting my ability to show up when I teach. And to me that’s something big. :)

I hope you’re all having a really good day out there!!!

I’m from Arkansas and we call everything Coke. It could be a Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Sprite etc. but we refer to it as Coke.

OMG! I am so pumped for the podcast with Kara and Des. Literal genius decision that they’re doing this.
Also, I started working out with a trainer 3-4 days a week and the strength it has brought to my running is amazing! And the gift of not getting hurt when mileage picks up during marathon training. So here for it.
xoxo

pop!!…I know, I know, it’s like running shoes or sneakers….? running or jogging, don’t get me started.
I’ve been tempted my magnesium, I do get post run and sometimes bike ride calf cramps…
my new year’s resolutions usually last until, um, January 2nd…

your second NY resolution is great! I am a neat freak when it comes to my inbox (and only there) and I immediately unsubscribe from Newsletters if I accidentally signed up for them. I HATE emails with a passion, haha.
I love Skye in her dance outfit. Is she taking ballet classes or some other kind of dance?

I do take magnesium at night and I think it helps my digestion and also calms me own (though I have heard it makes some people really awake and alert so they take it in the morning). There are different kinds of magnesium, magnesium citrate is being absorbed more quickly. i take magnesiumoxid (thats what its called in german, I suppose it’s somthing similar in english) and this form is supposed to slowly fill up the magnesium stores in the body. Though I don’t really know where magnesium is stored, ha.
Anyway, have a good day, Janae!

Natural Calm:) for yearssss. It’s the best. I get the powder and drink it before bed
And also, so excited for you to start at the FRONT of Boston marathon. It’s so fun.
I’m not updating my time. Im gonna start further back and hopefully not get passed by so many people, lol.
Happy training!!!
