Friday Favorites & Glimpse!

(Shorts, bra, half-zip, shoes)

I guess I like Thursday speed workouts because this one felt surprisingly great!  It was nice to be outside and not worry about slipping on ice too.

Opening gels with frozen fingers is rough; I was reminded of that yesterday.  I had a few graham crackers and a gel before the run, a gel at mile 6ish, and another at 10.

16 miles @ 7:17 average with 2 x 2 miles + 1 mile + 5 x 200ms.  I felt pretty strong with the workout (and a 2nd fastest time on the first segment, wahoo), which was so needed.  I am fine continuing forward with a bunch of runs that feel extra hard as long as I can get a little glimpse of fitness once in a while ha.

Shorts when it was 21° F was a risky choice, but I was happy I did…

PS right before we started the workout, a friend reminded us how much smiling will help us throughout the workout.  I smiled as much as my frozen face allowed me too and it helped.

When Kodiak Cakes are on sale at Costco, I want to fill my entire cart with them.

Beck had his first-ever dentist appointment.  He made sure to thoroughly inspect everything before getting checked out.

I meal prepped me and Andrew’s lunches for the next few days (and had to pick out the few brussel sprouts to put in the salad that I hadn’t burned).

And Skye requested dream pizza for dinner!

Let’s get chatting about some favorite things this week…

*Emily told me about the Peloton foam rolling class!  Brilliant.  Need someone to help you not abandon stretching/rolling after 20 seconds?  (I do)

Take one of the classes!

*Also, my coach sent me this class for stretching and it’s a great one too.

*Breaking Point on Netflix.  I don’t want to tell you how fast I went through the season.  I am fascinated by watching the best of the best do their thing and what it takes to be at their level.

*The joy that Des and Kara’s new podcast brings me….  PS spoiler, but Des said she has a book coming out next year!

*Lauren Fleshman’s book.  I finished it earlier this week and I want every runner and coach to read it.  Wow.  I devoured that one.  I looked forward to any chance I had (even when doing laundry!) to listen to it, but now I want to buy a copy of the book to highlight it.   It is right up there with Deena’s book for me now.

*Andrew and I both have one of these and use them daily for our hot or cold drinks.  I’ve been obsessed with Stanley water bottles for years and am now obsessed with their mugs because we are usually on the go, and they are easy to take everywhere.

Does anyone else love Kodiak Cakes?

Have any fun plans this weekend?

Do you need the motivation to stretch or foam roll, or are you pretty good at getting them done on your own?

Who has a show they have watched recently and loved?  I need another!

I can’t believe you wore shorts in 21°!?? I’m heading out for an early morning run at 39° in long leggings, ha ha.
I can’t wait to listen to that podcast with Des and Kara!
I’m finally getting my hair done today, wahoo!! I always feel so good after that happens.
Have a great Friday!

Yes, take the class and let me know what you think. Hahaha when it comes to speed, I just cannot wear much. Today was the same temp and I bundled up! Enjoy getting your hair done, that is the best feeling. Thanks Wendy, you too!

Solid speed workout, Janae!! Can’t wait to see you crush Boston!!

1.) Breaking Point is SO good. I’ve never played tennis in my life and now want to start after watching it.
2.) Weekend plans: PUPPY sitting!! A friend of mine is headed out of town and I offered to watch her 5 month old Australian Shepherd pup and have no idea what I’m getting into lol. We already have two dogs (an 8 and a 9 year old) so been out of the puppy phase for a very long time. Wish us luck!!

Have the best weekend, Janae!!

I had to laugh as I read your post today because you wear shorts when everyone else has on leggings. And it made me think about how you laugh at Andrew (and now Knox) for wearing shorts when you are bundled up. But that’s you when you run! So you’re all crazy! :) :)

Bahaha you have a point, Katrina! Turns out I’m the really crazy one;). Hope your day is a beautiful one!

I recommend the Mobility section too under Collections on Peloton for some extra lengthening and stretching.
We have been watching Wednesday on Netflix, I actually really like it and its not really scary.

Thank you so much for this… I’ll be trying those classes! Oh we are loving Wednesday too. Happy weekend, Corrinne!

Fun plans include Enso’s second birthday party on Sunday! Baseball themed :) but pretty much just a ton of bouncy balls for the kids to play with ha.
I need motivation to stretch! Those videos look great.
I just started watching White Lotus (only on second episode) but it is good so far and people seem to be obsessed. Have a fun weekend, Janae!

16 miles with speed work, whew, that’s amazing. The mountains with the sunrise on them look so beautiful.

I think we are going skiing or snow hiking this weekend, haven’t decided yet, but should be fun either way.

I am so excited for Des and Kara’s new podcast! I am always looking for new awesome shows to watch while on the treadmill, please share if you get any good suggestions.

Are you guys skiing this weekend?

Reply

Thank you, Beth! Both of those things sound so fun. You guys are so good getting out and I love that! I totally will share what I find next… watch Breaking Point on your next run. SO good. Yes, we are hoping to get out at least one of the days. Thanks friend, you too!

Right there with you on the shorts. I can’t run in leggings , esp speed work!! Drives me crazy! :)
I got the Kodiak frozen blueberry waffles for a quick grab n go and I love them! Our Costco is so lame compared to others around the country through…I can never find anything I see people post!
Hope you have an amazing weekend!

Thank you… I’m not alone! I can’t get my legs to move fast without them. Those waffles are SO good. I need to send you some of my Costco finds, that is not fair! Happy weekend, Mollie!

We have a Stanley thermos and it’s lasted us for years & we still love it for car trips. Those mugs look nice too!
Nothing special this weekend, but we have a new batch of library books we picked up last night, so that is very exciting. I’ve started a treadmill running routine to escape the current icy sidewalks and roads, so plan to do that, plus some cross country skiing Sunday afternoon.
Foam rolling videos are genius. It’s SO hard to do that on my own! I also need videos for stretching. It makes me feel like I am stretching with a friend, versus all by myself!

Stanley products are just the best! YAY for new library books… you are inspiring me to take my kids to the library today! Have the best treadmill run and cross country skiing is the best… enjoy! YES, we need that friend there stretching/rolling with us ha. Happy weekend, Katie!

Weekend plans: I’m trying out a new pool for swimming and maybe find a group that does open water swimming because one of my goals this year is to do my first open water swim. I want to do a 1 mile but they also offer a 1/2 mile so maybe will do both.

Also random question: what are you favorite gloves for the colder weather? I’m in need of new gloves and I struggle with finding warm ones. We have had a very mild winter on the east coast so far, but would be good for me to get a pair before the cold sneaks up on us.

Reply

I hope you love the new pool and that you find a group. I am SO excited about your goal for this year… do both! Right now I am obsessed with these two gloves:

There is nothing better than a hot stack of kodiak cakes with butter and syrup. I listened to this episode of My Favorite Murder about Cuban’s first olympic marathoner Felix Carvajal (the second half of the podcast!) and loved it. https://myfavoritemurder.com/362-a-generous-number-of-apples/

I had so many mixed emotions from laughing out loud to almost throwing up. This race recap is complete chaos. I love history. Things were SO weird. Hope you have a great weekend of training and resting!

I will 100% be listening to this. THANK YOU, Rachel! I hope you get some kodiak cakes with butter and syrup this weekend!

You and I definitely have different “hot zones” – I’m in long tights when it’s under 50 but my gloves come off after a mile, even when it’s in the 30s!

We are flying to Hawaii on Sunday! We only went once last year so I’m hoping we’ll be there a few more times this year.

I found a new-to-me yoga channel last summer and I love her style so much! I’ve really stuck with it and I’ve seen an improvement in my running. (https://www.youtube.com/@alameluyoga875) Her yoga for runners is great! I did one for glutes yesterday and I’m feeling it today.

Reply

Hahaha yes, our Hot Zones are the opposite. HAWAII! Have the best time and I want to come with you. Thank you thank you thank you for her channel, I cannot wait to try. Happy weekend, Kathy!

I love Hannah’s foam rolling classes!! The other HUGE game-changer for me has been taking a 10-min barre class with her before riding/running; seriously I cannot recommend them enough to activate my whole posterior chain and turn on my glutes. Try the 6/9/21 class where she has a coral top. That one has a cult following (it’s been taken over 800k times according to my Peloton app!).

I am going to copy you! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Have a great weekend, Rachael!

Hi! I know you’ve linked it a bunch of times, can can you link the salad recipe you made for lunch?

Yes! You are going to love it! Have a beautiful day!

I can only be consistant with foam rolling or yoga or anything if I have someone in front of me telling me to, so I take Monday evening foam rolling and stretching classes over the winter…that helps ….
I’ve started watching the Last of Us on Crave..a new series based on a game?…it was filmed where I live! the province of Alberta in Canada…not really a travel thing, you can’t really tell it’s here, but that’s kind of cool….I didn’t really like the first episode, but I didn’t like the start of the 100 or Game of Thrones either so there’s hope
I’m spending today whining about being old……I though about shaving my head to get rid of the grey…
But, am planning more of 2023….had a long talk with someone about half marathons vs full marathons….and I’m reading a book about the NYC marathon…..so that may colour my life…today, chill, tomorrow and the rest of the weekend, run, and run..

Emily in Paris on Netflix! Also, if you never watched Reba, it’s an older sitcom, but very fun. On Hulu!

I love the Peloton foam rolling and stretching classes! I am much more consistent since I started using them. I usually do a cool down class after my long runs and it has really helped. I have always been really bad about skipping my stretching and I always pay for it!

Love love love the Hannah Corbin foam rolling, but also LOVE her lower body 10 min barre classes. They are the perfect warm up to get your glutes awake and just great cross training for running/sports/cycling. Also thanks for the book and show recommendations, I just got on the waiting list for Lauren’s book at my library.
