What to do if you are gaining weight after a hard training cycle?

(long sleeve, leggings, shoes, headband)

Thirteen miles early in the morning with a big group of girls.  The sunrise was incredible.

Everyone was up and eating breakfast when I got home.

I convinced Andrew to join me in a full-body strength workout.    So much more fun to have your best friend beside you suffering.

I’m telling you if you come in from a run and you are freezing… strength training will warm you up faster than a hot shower.

We had a busy weekend with a big event happening for the first time…

Taking all four kids skiing at the same time.

Beck was so excited to be part of the activity.

We were told many times that we were very brave ha.  PS at Sundance allows kids to ride in the front pack, which is fun because you see babies all over the place enjoying a ski day.

Expect to see a wild turkey or two anytime you go to Sundance.

We also spent a lot of time with my in-laws.  Brooke fell in love with this giant teddy bear while we were there.

Never too cold for ice cream.

Or shorts;)

I wrote this portion of this post after I ran CIM in 2019 but forgot about it and just found it (this applies to the holiday season too:)….

And to answer today’s question that nobody asked me, I thought I would share because it’s what I just did….

What to do if you are gaining weight after a hard training cycle?

BUY BIGGER PANTS.

My body always gains weight whenever I finish a hard training cycle.  Of course, it will, I’m not running the mileage I was or doing the intensity that I was, and you better believe that I’m not going to go back to cutting out foods or eating ‘light’ to make up for those missed miles (I probably eat less just because I’m not as hungry as when I am running 80 MPW but not because I don’t think I deserve it).  I do not weigh myself, but I’m guessing I’m gaining weight because certain pants I wore a few months ago are not zipping up or buttoning up.  This happens every single time for me, and then once I start training again, I naturally usually go back to those pants again.

After many training cycles, I would be so frustrated that things weren’t fitting and try to wear them anyways and be uncomfortable the entire day until I learned the magic of…

GOING UP IN SIZE TO BE COMFORTABLE AGAIN.

It allows you to be comfortable, respect your body’s set point, stop thinking about it during the day because your jeans are cutting into your sides, and enjoy life and food fully:)

Just some advice from a random girl in Utah!

People will notice your smile and confidence because you feel comfortable with yourself and who you are in clothes that fit more than they would ever notice that you bought a different pair of pants because your weight has fluctuated.

———————————————————————————————–

What was a highlight from your weekend?

In training right now or off-season?  Running for fun or for a goal right now?

Who is running Houston in a few weeks?

A question from Jane!  Is anyone interested in training together in the South Shore of Boston?  Let me know in the comments.

So exciting about the skiing with all of you! “Buy bigger pants” brought tears to my eyes. I am working on body image stuff and hearing that felt so good. I have been making huge progress by following Jordana Edelstein https://jordanaedelstein.com/ (not affiliated with her in any way) and hearing it from you really hit me. We are all more than our bodies and I don’t think we can hear that enough. Thank you!

Thank you so much for sharing Jordana, I can’t wait to listen to her podcast. YES YES YES… what our bodies look like is the least interesting thing about us. What we can do with them is what we should focus on. I hope you have the best day, Michelle.

Thank you for that reminder! I feel much happier and more confident when I wear things that fit and don’t focus on random numbers (like my weight or clothing size). I’m in between training cycles right now and not working out as much, which changes my body too.

Exactly! Yep, our bodies will change our entire lives and trusting them to do what they want to do allows us to be so much happier. I hope you have a beautiful day, Mariah!

Hi Janae,

What a fun time with the kiddos! We are going on a ski trip in February with my nieces who haven’t seen skiing before and I am so excited! They will be 10 and 8. I just wanted to tell you this is exactly what I needed to hear – I’ve been struggling with weight gain and being unhappy with how I look all year after many set backs with injury have side lined me for most of this year.I finally bought some bigger scrubs (I’m a veterinarian) and it has made a big difference! I’m also finally injury free and getting on track with a nutritionist and a running coach. Thank you so much for your wise words on being happy and accepting where you are now!

Ellen, I hope you guys have the best ski trip ever with your nieces. Ski trips bring the best memories. I am so sorry this has been a hard year with the set backs and injuries. You made the best decision to buy the bigger scrubs and let yourself be confident. We would never try to force our feet into shoes that are too small… why would we do that to our bodies?
You’ve got this, Ellen! I might have to reach out to you and have Brooke ask you some questions about being a veterinarian, she wants to be one so bad. You are her idol:). Have a beautiful day!

Janae,
Thank for the words of encouragement! I always love reading your blog for this reason!

Of course would love to answer any questions Brooke has! I wanted to be a veterinarian probably since I was her age so I know the feeling! Do you have my email via the site? :-)

As a dietitian I held my breath to see how you would answer your own question. And like usual you nailed it! I like to say: your weight isn’t wrong, your pants are wrong.
Also Beck’s haircut is too cute!

Reply

YOUR PANTS ARE WRONG… Amen! We wouldn’t try to fit our feet into shoes that were too small, so why do that with our body? Thank you, Molly! Happy Monday!

Reply

Yes! But bigger pants and don’t worry about it.
And how fun! A ski day with everyone! When will you start Beck in ski school do you think? Andrew and Knox with their shorts, ha ha.
Best part of the weekend was wrapping up the holiday toy/food program and knowing that I helped 450 families during a rough time in their lives. And then having it rain the rest of the weekend so it was easy to stay inside, be a little lazy, and really take a day of down time 😊
I am currently not training, but definitely maintaining and working on strength and core. I might be getting the marathon bug again, but not pushing anything right now.
Hope your Monday is off to a good start!

Reply

They don’t do ski school at our resort until they are 4 sadly but maybe I could find a private lesson for him?! 450. families. Wow. Wendy, that gave me goosebumps. You inspire me so much. The marathon is one thing that you cannot force and I love that you are listening closely to your body. Thanks friend, you too!

Highlight from my weekend: played hooky at work to get the first ski day of the season and lucked out with an amazing between-storm window and zero crowds. Best day! Love to see Beck in the front carrier – there’s no better way to have a family day in nature.

Great advice on buying bigger pants too. I have a few sizes of my favorites for that very reason!

Reply

Liz, oooooooooh I am so happy you were able to get out for the perfect ski day. I hope you get another one soon. Yes, Beck loved being out there and seeing everything. Seriously, having a variety of sizes is just what we all need. Happy Monday, Liz!

Good morning. I totally understand the psyche you get when your pants are snug. Helpful hint- I never dry my running tights it really helps them not feel snug.
The highlight of my weekend was running with my long time running friend of 23 years in a hail storm.
I ran CIM with an abbreviated build due to Covid. I came off the race feeling great and motivated so I’m training for a 5k to work on speed and then following it up with the Revel Mt Charleston 26.2 on 4/1. I’m not a great downhill runner so I’m looking for some strength exercises and form cues to help me get the most out of it.
Have a fantastic Day!
Ps I’m headed to Heber City to visit my sister for Christmas and we are tubing at Soldier Hollow on Christmas Day- very excited. Have you ever cross country skied there?

Reply

Good call on not drying your running tights! 23 year friendship, I am so glad you two got that run together even in the hail. I LOVE that you are going for a fast 5k now, that is so smart. And Charleston ahhh so exciting! When you are running downhill, remember to push your hips forward! It engages your glutes and keeps you leaning forward rather than sitting back in your stride. YAY for Heber, I want a cabin there so bad. We love tubing at Soldier Hollow, and yes, I have cross-country skied there. YOU MUST GO. It is SO much fun!

Ah – yes.. the buy bigger pants… I am so glad as a society we are adopting this way of thinking and no longer trying to shrink ourselves into our clothes! Clothes are meant to fit us, not the other way around! :)
My parents came to visit from CA, so we did an early Christmas for the littles. A couple highlights – our son got an electric scooter/motorcycle that HE LOVES and has been zooming around all over the neighborhood. Then we found out of the boys down the road has a dirt bike so they raced up and down the streets which was lots of fun. I got my nails done in a funky red tip with the ring finger as a checkerboard this weekend with my mom!
I am currently entering the halfway point of half marathon training and wiggin out on if I will actually meet my goals and PR or if I should just hope to finish the race – haha! Balancing full time work, motherhood , running .. family in town… all of it is HARD WORK! Trying to take it one day at a time.

Reply

Amen. ‘Clothes are meant to fit us, not the other way around!’ I love that so much… we have always done it the right way with shoes and so why not with clothing?! I am so happy you had a great time with your parents and littles. Oh I bet he is in love with that motorcycle. I must see your nails! You have so much on your plate right now, I am so impressed. Keep me updated! Thanks Jacquie!

Janae, Thank you for bringing up an uncomfortable topic. I too naturally ebb and flow with training. I have never weighed myself due to a past ED so I don’t know how much I gain or lose, but I can always tell by clothes. It’s so important to focus on feel rather than look and I so appreciate that you do. This year I was the “thickest” I’ve been showing up to CIM and I ran my personal best. I love that my body can do hard things at 38 and the scale or focusing on what I looked like could have taken the joy away from that happy moment. Keep preaching and sharing. You are a positive light for us runners.
xoxo

Hello Danielle! Thank you so much for sharing your experience and biggest congrats on your CIM PR! That is amazing. What we can do with our bodies is so much more interesting than what they look like. You are amazing. Keep me updated with it all!

THANK YOU FOR THE REMINDER. OMG. As women such a huge struggle for us on gaining weight. I never weigh myself either because it was determining my mood too much in the past. I am running for fun right now. I will start training again more in February? I have a 15k scheduled for April and Grandma’s marathon 1/2 (Gary Bjorklund) scheduled for June – so will have to get more serious in the Spring! I barely was able to run last week due to some slips on the ice (how!?)…so decided an easy rest week, walks, and extra sleep were in order!

Best part of this weekend was a Christmas Concert at church where my dad was in the choir. The singers are all amazing -they have a full orchestra…just puts you in the mood to celebrate Christmas!!

I hope you have the best week, Janae!

You are so welcome, Kristen! Fluctuating is normal! So excited about your 2023 races and you have to keep me updated on your training. Good call on taking it back last week, falls are the worst. I bet that concert was amazing and seeing your dad up there, I love it. Thank you and I hope you do too!

Thanks for the reminder :) I just bought some bigger jeans last week. I had a baby in August and I’m just not comfortable in my pre-pregnancy size yet. Nobody wants to go around uncomfortable! I’m glad I’m not alone in the weight fluctuations!

The highlight of my weekend was a 9 mile run, my longest run postpartum!! Hope your week is great Janae!

Reply

Congrats on your new baby, that is so exciting! And also, congrats on buying the bigger jeans so you can be comfortable. The best feeling. 9 miles ahhhh I am so happy for you. Keep me updated Taylor, and I hope your week is a great one too!

I’m 20 days from becoming unable to sing a certain Beatle song ever again…….am not happy about it.

Oh no! I am sorry! I hope you are having a great Monday though!

Janae I love your dip recommendations and definitely asked a Trader Joe’s employee for the dill pickle dip last week. He looked it up for me and informed me it was a Sams Club product. LOL!

Happy belated birthday, Skye!

Oh no, I probably wrote it wrong in a post somewhere! Costco has it too and I hope you love it. Thanks Megan and happy Monday!

Hi Janae! Great post today! I realized recently it’s hard for me to focus on multiple things at once- basically if I’m working hard on my job or prepay for interviews it’s hard for me to also focus on training hard for a race! So the weight does slide around especially because I comfort eat. But I think it’s ok, the people most important to me love me no matter what size I am.
That ski day looks awesome! Wishing you many more!

Reply

YES YES YES and it’s all totally normal! Thanks for sharing, Amy! I hope your husband had a great time skiing too.

And our body composition can change even if our weight is the same!! I’ve been doing lots more cycling and weights due to a running injury—my legs have totally changed shape and so my pants are looser at the waist/butt and much tighter on my quads!

Reply

So so so true!! We just need to trust our bodies! Keep enjoying the bike and weights, they keep us in such great shape for running when you are injury free again!

Hi Janae :)
thank you for reminding us… we are more than our bodies! They allow us to do magical things (like watch a winter sunrise in freezing temps while running).
I love winter running (but then I love all seasons..). I am not training for anything right now, but I also really struggle in winter because I get sick a lot. (I don’t know how you never get sick with 4 kids in the house?!) I start sniffing every 5 weeks from october to april which makes it hard to train for spring races :/
I will try next year though. I am tryining to decide between to half marathons (23 & 30 of april). My period app says the first would be my late luteal phase, the second on the third day of my cycle… Ha, it’s way too far in advance but I might choose the later. When you did the same for Boston next year I had to laugh out loud because I totally do that too.
Have a lovely day!

Reply

EXACTLY! Life is so fun when we focus on what our bodies give to us. Oh Moni, we all get sick all of the time too… you are not alone! But I am so sorry, that is very difficult this time of year. We are SO alike… looking up our periods with races hahaha. IT’S A BIG DEAL! Keep me updated on what you do and thanks Moni, you too!

Reply

…I just only wear stretchy pants so they fit during any training or off season. Check mate.

Hahaha you win.

So glad Beck finally gets to join in the skiing fun!

Highlight from my weekend = driving to Fresno to spend time with family. My great nephew turned 10 months today and he is such a doll. This visit he reached for me to pick him up several times and that just made my heart explode!

Totally running for fun these days and getting on the trails as much as possible.

Reply

Great nephew… oh that is so so exciting! He loves you! I’m so happy you were able to spend time together. Keep loving those trails, they are the best. Happy Monday, Kathy!

I ran the Honolulu marathon yesterday and it was so windy and harder than expected but I finished! Three ultras and two marathons this year and now its finally time to rest : ) Thank you so so much for this post! I almost didn’t read it because of the title – when people usually talk about that stuff I find it really triggering but I am so glad I read on because of course that’s not where you were going with it at all! Thanks for being you : )

Sarah, congratulations! And in that wind… I cannot imagine. I have heard it is SO hilly. You have had an incredible year. My title was probably a little too click baity ha. Thanks Sarah, we are all in this together!

I am just in “recovery” mode right now, ha! I had a big trip to Texas the week before Thanksgiving, and had a stellar half marathon performance in Shiner, TX after a week of partying and staying up late. It was raining, 40 degrees, and gusty winds, but I managed to be less than 2 min from a PR! I was so proud of myself, and since then I have been only running about 3 days a week. I got a big promotion and new title at work right before my trip/race, so coming back to Thanksgiving, a new job, and Christmas is enough big stuff, so I am letting running be what it is, with shorter distances for now. I have a race in March & April, so I will start training the week after Christmas. I debated a new year’s day race, and I still am, but we’ll see. Just riding that race high right now:)

Excellent post today. “Buy bigger pants”, it took me a long time to get that concept, not gunna lie. But after exchanging my miles for an MBA along with full time work just means finding clothes that make me feel more comfortable. Love when you write about this important things. My weekend was full of study and deadlines BUT looking forward to a lovely cosy Christmas with some overdue time off! Xx

What a fun weekend! And a gorgeous sunrise!

We went to Disneyland to celebrate my birthday this weekend with our kids and it was sooo fun!

Right now is just fun running. I’m debating on a spring marathon, I’ve never done one before. My running partner is running Boston so I thought I would just train with her, but she’s currently dealing with an injury so we will see what she’s able to do.

Reply

Thank you for this, buy bigger pants. I have struggled with body image/ Ed but have been doing so well for many years. It bugs me that when people gain weight and are happy and it isn’t due to any underlying health the view is to fix it. Maybe, just maybe it’s ok.

Reply

Thank you for this reminder. I haven’t been able to run in over a year or ride a bike in the past 5 months due to declining medical status. I have a wonderful medical team trying to figure out what exactly is wrong. But I struggle with the fact that I have gained some weight during all of this. My husband’s response is to buy bigger pants. Can’t be restricting and so hard on myself. This is my “off season” eventually I’ll be back. :)

Reply

Great post! Buy bigger pants! So obvious but always something we somehow need a reminder for!

Replying to Jane: Hi Jane! We have a group of moms that run in Scituate, not sure where you are south of Boston? Would love to have you join us! We run early, like 4:30 early though… would love to connect if you’re interested!

Reply

Hi Cat! I’m going to reach out, thank you!! Would love to join you one of these days!

Love this, it is a hard concept after being deep in the diet culture! It’s okay to change, thank you for encouraging us! :D
