Why back to workouts? + How to avoid nerves leading up to workouts!

(Shirt, shorts, shoes, socks, bra, watch, sunglasses)

Why am I doing speed again?!  I’m pretty sure I have my eye on a marathon and I’m working with my coach… Do I recommend runners do this so soon after a marathon?  No.  Am I playing with fire?  Absolutely.  My hamstring is 100% after taking nine days off, and I’m feeling back to myself again even though I thought there was no way I was going to do this type of thing again, ha.  I think the heat of St. George held me back a bit, so we are experimenting with what to do next.  I love training so much, so even if I don’t do a race soon, I love the grind.  I’ll just keep listening closely to my body.

Tis’ the season where I go back and forth throughout the entire run shedding or adding a layer.

I was thinking during my workout yesterday about how much workouts used to stress me out.  I focus now on making sure I’m fueling correctly before, during, and after, but the actual run part doesn’t make me nervous anymore.  Leading up to big workouts, I would practically have a stomachache from nerves, and now I barely even think about the workout until I am actually doing it.  Over the years, I have just realized that there is nothing to worry about.  The actual splits don’t matter because every day is different during training, and I know I want to pay attention to the effort.  As long as I put in a good effort and push myself, I am doing exactly what I need to do.  That could be faster or slower than previous attempts, but why worry about what the outcome will be leading up to it… I know I’ll do my best for the day, and that’s what matters.   It’s the accumulation of the efforts that get us to our goals on race day.  <— That, along with doing more and more workouts, has taken away any nerves I used to have leading up to a workout.

PS the Vaporflys are not meant for running through burs.  Those suckers get caught in that foam but luckily my long nails could get them out.

Andrew grabbed this running shirt for me the other day when he saw it because he knew I would love the little hole for my watch to peak out… and he was very right.  It’s the details of running gear that make me so happy.

4 x 2 mile repeats with friends.  Felt strong and held them at a bit faster than marathon effort.

Another tangent—> Andrew and I are always going out to new spots to make my Instagram Reels (I have so much fun with these lately), and we tried a new spot that looked cool because of all the signs.  While there, we saw the BYU women’s track/cross-country teams, along with the coaches and pacers.  I was hyperventilating seeing them;)

Just my paparazzi picture:

Okay, one more tangent–> I am sick of graham crackers and so I tried out oatmeal before my run (I felt so energized and it did great on my stomach).  I attempted to take a picture of the oatmeal at Dark:Thirty and ended up with a picture of part of my head instead.  I was tired.

And here’s what the rest of the day looked like:

I got to sit out on the lawn with my sister and the kids for a while.

These two tried new stunts.

We went to get Knox’s skis and Beck thinks he needs new shoes.

Turns out Beck hates his costume.

I get nervous leading up to a workout, but the idea of controlling what I can and enjoying the rest sounds way better!

I like PB and honey on oatmeal, and also granola! That might sound weird but the different textures go together so well.

Absolutely, you can control the effort you put in and that’s what matters. I will absolutely try that combo (minus honey because I’m weird ha)… it sounds amazing. Have a great day!

I don’t get nervous before workouts but I do before races. Maybe I just haven’t pushed myself hard enough lol

I think I might do the hallows eve marathon we have locally. But as for racing I have my eyes on some races next summer. I have been enjoying some downtime and plus it is quite smokey locally so haven’t been getting out as much.

Um..pockets in bike shorts for running! Just this year I started wearing bike spandex shorts for running and it is amazing!! Now I need a pair with pockets

Haha aww Beck looks as happy in his costume as River did. She looked down right ashamed as well but that did not stop us hee.

Enjoy training and have a great day Janae!

Ummmm yes you have pushed yourself hard enough. I am SO excited about your hallows eve marathon, that sounds so fun. Pockets in spandex shorts are all I ever need! Hahaha hopefully River gets used to her costume… I am praying Beck will too! Thanks friend, you too!

Oatmeal is my go to for longer runs! You can jazz it up with maple syrup or PB too – I keeps your tummy happy for so long!

I am so excited about this new breakfast. It definitely helped me feel full for so much longer. Hope your day is off to a great start, Allison!

I have a half marathon this weekend, but I’m just coming back from my pelvic stress fracture so I am treating it as a training run/gauge of recovery and just taking it easy. That being said, I have no idea when to push it again – going regularly to PT and I know I’m good to run, but workouts? Would you consider a post about when/how to pick a coach? Do you have off seasons with no coach? I know you’ve switched coaches, too. Local coach versus coach you like but never met? Just trying to decide what is the best use of my money. Especially if BQ is a goal for me one day :) Thanks, Janae! Have a great day!

RACHEL!! You are back! I am so so happy that you have a race this weekend and that you have gotten through this injury! I will absolutely get to work on this post. THANK you for the questions! Hope your day is a beautiful one, Rachel!

This post is exactly what I needed! I get SO nervous before workouts. Like 10000% more nervous than I do for tune up races. I can easily make myself sick worrying over them. It’s something I’m working on this training cycle (I’m rereading Deena’s book too to work on that mental game) but it’s still very tough for me. Also funny that I’m doing 4 x 2 miles today for my workout! Annnnd I ordered that shirt before I even got out of bed :)

I hope this training means seeing you at CIM Is a possibility ;)

Annie, I am SO sorry about those nerves and I totally remember how hard that was when I would make myself sick over them. Go crush that workout, you are so so strong!!! Hahaha I love a little online shopping first thing in the morning. I NEED TO MAKE MY FINAL DECISION!!! Have a great day!

I love that running shirt! Sometimes I think designers are so smart.
I will sometimes get nervous before workouts, and I think to myself, why? It’s just running, putting one foot in front of the other, yes maybe very fast or for a really long time, but there’s no reason to be nervous. Right now I am focusing on the joy of running again. Playing around with what feels good when it comes to how fast or how far I want to go. And that is actually helping me. My husband and I are looking into a destination race, something next summer or fall. Once we decide, I know I will be excited to start the training. So for now, I’m going to keep having fun with my running.
Have a great day Janae 😊

I LOVE the way you talk through the nerves. That is so so true… it’s just running! I love that you guys are planning a destination race. SO exciting and please let me know what you end up choosing! Keep finding that joy and having fun. Thanks Wendy, you too!

Great idea for a running shirt!!

I must know: did Skye bunny hop over Andrew or go off a jump? If she’s already bunny hopping, she’s accomplished more on a bike by age 5 than I have in my 30s! I’ve never mastered that move, but hopefully soon!

Hi Janae! I get nervous for big workouts too! But the nerves go away when the workout starts. My friends are doing a holiday race! I am thinking of maybe joining them as a fun run. I did PR there before and I haven’t raced seriously since so I’m not sure if I want to do that one as my return to racing.
I love savory oatmeal! I eat it with hot sauce and eggs.
Have a great day!

I have been eating warm rice cereal with honey and a go go squeeze apple sauce before my speed workouts and so far, it is working well. I do get nervous before them; my worry is not for the running but for the stomach pain I might have. Worrying about it is definitely contributing to the problem.

I know that no matter how fast I run, I am going to be happy that I did the workout and doing them with a friend that pushes me makes everything more enjoyable.

“My hamstring is 100% after taking nine days off, and I’m feeling back to myself again even though I thought there was no way I was going to do this type of thing again, ha.” But you didn’t take time off? As someone that other runners may look up to – this is misleading information.

Skye is your little dare devil!!

Nerves are always about doubting my abilities, whether it’s running or other areas of life. The only way to get over them is to just go out and do it. Run the workout, sing a solo, speak in front of a group. I do think that being a little bit nervous is okay – it’s means you care and helps bring focus.

For years now all my running tops are cycling jersey because POCKETS! 3 pockets in the back work so great for everything I need – phone, sunglasses, garage door opener or keys. I have everything from super light summer weight to fleece lined.

I like oatmeal in the winter. I like to take about 1/2 a cup of frozen strawberries or blueberries, pop them in the microwave until defrosted, then add my oatmeal and water.

“The only way to get over them is to just go out and do it.” Such a simple and true statement, but I’m writing it down :)

Hi Janae,
I’m so glad you’re feeling great and back to training again! Funny, I JUST saw that Nike shirt but didn’t pull the trigger- now I definitely will! I have always loved oatmeal, and this summer, got really into overnight oats. Have you ever had them? So delicious! Have a great day!
