(shorts, tank, shoes, sunglasses)

I switched things up yesterday, and I didn’t run!  My hamstring was feeling off, and my body needed rest due to how I felt during the workout the day before.  So, I slept 9.5 hours and went to Plunj later in the morning.

At plunj, you go from the sauna (190°F) for 10-15 minutes to a quick rinse-off shower to the cold plunge (43°F) for 2-5 minutes, then rest for 5 minutes.  I always leave feeling so rejuvenated.  The hot and cold contrast therapy is amazing.

The sauna was great for my heat training for St. George, and sweating like crazy feels so good.

When I get in the tub I repeat, ‘I can do hard things’ the entire time because it is so hard.

I have to share what Jaci said about using a sauna leading up to her marathon… I am going to go often leading up to the race.

We went to Costco, and when Skye spotted my sister, she went into a full-on sprint.

My sister takes Skye on errands, just the two of them sometimes.  They have quite the bond.

My niece came over for toast with honey butter.  The better the food is at my house, the more often I see the teenagers;)

Brooke put together an awesome fruit plate to go with our Costco deep dish pizza (in the frozen area) and brussels.

And for dessert… the candy that Knox left next to my bed for me:)

I’ve got a few favorite things this week:

*The Cinnamon Broom from Trader Joe’s.  It makes my house smell ridiculously good and goes perfectly with our Halloween decorations.

*Lauren influenced me on this one (and wahoo, it is on sale)–> it’s a back and neck massager you use wherever you need for deep tissue work. I copied her, and while I watch a show, I just lay on it and move it to the different spots that need it for my running recovery.
*The Hoka Clifton 8s. I get emotional about these shoes because they were the most significant thing that got me running again during my plantar fasciitis injury. These shoes are magic, and I was so happy when the cream version came out.  I love running in them and I love spending the rest of the day in them.  PS the white and cream of these shoes wash so well… they look brand new after you wash them.
*THIS BOOK. I cannot express adequately how much I love it. It’s a parenting book that leaves me feeling excited and hopeful… such a good read—time to get good winter gear because we are going to be outside all winter. There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.
*My original subscription service (Feedburner) stopped sending out posts via email, and we finally figured out a great option to use instead–> Follow.it! So if you want to subscribe via email, it’s up at the top on the right side of the page and looks like this:)
*15 days!

Looking forward to anything this weekend?

Reading anything great?

Do you use a sauna?

You can only get one item at Trader Joe’s for the rest of your life… what would it be?

-Their sweet potato gnocchi.

Not sure if this is a thing where you live but in Philly there’s a company called Indego and they have bike stations all over the city that you can get passes for either a day, a month or an annual pass. For September they have a code to get a month for $5 so I’m going to try it out and use it for the firs time this weekend! Gotta switch it up and keep it interesting with simple things to do.

Toast and honey butter sounds incredible. No wonder the teenagers want to come over to hang out! Have a great Friday! Hopefully your hamstring is feeling a bit better today.

That is so awesome. What a great deal, enjoy biking this month. I love how many new things you try! Thanks Maureen, it felt so so good today. Happy weekend!

Happy Friday Janae!
My weekend is going to be a little bit of a challenge, husband is going to be out of town so I’m flying solo, but I’m going to take my little boy out to pick plums, so that should be fun! Right now I’m reading Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie, and it’s delightful if you’re ever looking for some fiction. I. LOVE. SAUNAS. Tragically I don’t really have access to one anymore. Back in college I’d often pop by the campus gym between class just to sit in the sauna for a few minutes if it was chilly out, which was most of the time! I don’t really have a Trader Joe’s near me, but whenever I find myself there, I ALWAYS get their maple sandwich cookies. I’d highly recommend if you’ve never had them.
Have a great weekend Janae! I hope it’s a great one!

Hey Courtney! I hope things go smoothly this weekend with your husband out of town. I want to go pick plums! I loved that movie, I need to read the book too. Isn’t it nice to just sit and relax in the sauna?! I want one in our house now! I have never tried those cookies, I will get them this next time. Thanks friend, you too!

I love the sweet potato gnocchi too! BUT, I also get the regular gnocchi (or cauliflower) and their tomato soup and mix the two. Serve with a pesto grilled cheese sandwich and it’s an easy weeknight dinner on nights we have multiple kid sports or are coaching our middle school XC team. I just added this to my meal plan for next week yesterday because I forgot how good it is.

WAIT, you put the gnocchi in their tomato soup?! Ummmm you just changed my life. Trying that! I love that you coach the XC team, you are amazing. Can’t wait to try this and I hope you have a great weekend!

I always love seeing your family bonds!
I think my weekend is open. Unless you count deep cleaning for house guests that come next week. I should maybe download a good audio book for that level of fun.

Thank you, Molly! ENJOY the open weekend and you have to let me know what book you get for your cleaning!

Good for you for listening to your body and not running yesterday. I’ve heard many professional runners say it’s better to go into a race a little under cooked than going in over cooked. If we are over trained, that’s when the injuries occur.
Your niece looks so much like your sister! It’s amazing how fast all the kids are growing up.
We’re flying to Denver today!! I’m very excited! I can’t wait to get a couple of runs in at that altitude, plus we’re going to the Bronco game on Sunday, which is always a good time!
Have a great Friday Janae 😊

YES!! So so true, I would much rather be undercooked! I felt so good today, I’m so glad I did. Isn’t it crazy how much they look alike?! Oh have the best time in Colorado, so so happy for you guys. ENJOY, Wendy!

My comment made the blog post – I feel famous! :) Hope the sauna-ing does wonders for your as it did for me. Plus it just feels so darn good.

Your comment brought me so much peace! I’m going to the sauna again today. THANK YOU JACI!

I hope your hamstring feels better! I wish we had a Plunj near us—I really want to try it! I love a sauna, but have yet to try an ice bath. Favorite Trader Joe’s item is the Israeli feta. It is so creamy and delicious!

I am so happy to report that it was 100% today ahhh! I hope they start building Plunj type spas everywhere! Off to get that feta, I drooled reading about it. Have a beautiful day, Kelly!

I’m looking forward to my 20 miler to tomorrow – the last one of this training cycle! Then watching my younger daughter’s soccer game (I’m missing my older daughter’s game for the run and I feel kind of bad about that…) and relaxing!

Reply

TWENTY MILES! You’ve got this one, Jenny! I’m sure your daughter understands and wants you to chase your dreams too! Bring your recovery tools to the younger’s game. Cheering for you!

We got an infrared sauna over 15 years ago and I still use it ALL.THE.TIME. It’s so relaxing and I feel like it helps knock back colds and other bugs. It was a big splurge at the time, but it’s definitely paid for itself after all these years.

I just read The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. If people liked Gentleman in Moscow (Des recommendation!) I think they’d love this too.

That’s such a hard question about TJ’s! I’d probably have to go with the Middle Eastern flatbread since I get those every time I go. But close second would be their birthday and other greeting cards. $.99 and they are so cute!

I think we are going to have to copy you. I love that you guys have your own sauna, what a great idea and I love that it has helped you so much. I’ll have to check that out, thank you so much. Their cards are the best! I am always shocked over how cheap they are. I’m grabbing that flatbread, thanks for sharing and have a great weekend, Michelle!

I am dealing with plantar fasciitis right now and I am hurting! Are there any things that worked for you during your injury? I have not gone to get new running shoes yet because I have no clue when I can pick it back up, just walking is so painful right now.

I am SO so sorry! Plantar is the worst! This post has my biggest tips and the hoka Clifton 8s made the biggest difference for me:

I read that book too after hearing her on a podcast. I tell my kids that – there is no such thing as bad weather just bad clothing! But we don’t have some of the good gear or the mountains and nature places she spoke of. Wow Switzerland sounded amazing after hearing her talk about it. We’ve got some things wrong here in America. I’m a teacher and the way they limit recess here but over there it’s the important part of the day!

Please tell me how you wash your Hoka! I have just started running in Clifton 8’s which I love but they got trashed at a muddy park run last week and now the thought of taking muddy shoes to the Melbourne Marathon makes me sad 😢

we’ve the cream coloured Cliftons at the stire, they’re a hard sell, could they be any whiter?….I’m supposed to do a 10K night race tomorrow evening, I’m trying to decide how badly I want to wait all day to run 10K at 8PM…but I do have a 16K training run Sunday morning, and am planning to spend some time on the bike training as well..and oh yeah, instructing a new Learn to Run virtual clinic tomorrow morning……..so a weekend I’m still no sure of

Hokas are my favorite! I’m curious — how do you wash them?
