Tuesday Tangents!

(Shirt, shoes, shorts)

Nothing like having the whole family wearing a race bib on a Monday morning to start your week off great.

I started with trails with friends, then we were off to the 5k.

How we all feel race morning when we have to wake up too early… luckily they loved it once the race started.

Brooke wanted to pull ahead, so we ran most of the race together.   She loved it.

Sprint to the finish line and she finished in about 33 minutes!

Knox crushed it, and Skye did about half of the race!  Beck stayed in the stroller the entire time because we had a lot of people to keep track of ha.

He was very excited about the post-race hand-outs.

He gets it already.

Brooke had the brilliant idea to get acai bowls once we finished, and while we were there, we bought a container of Superbowl Food’s coconut almond butter.

Andrew and I could eat this stuff with a spoon, and now we can.

Now for some tangents:

*Ummm, we are all obsessed with these, and I NEED Lauren’s socks.

IMG 3022

*This picture is from a Brooks Running event a decade ago, but they taught us the best way to drink from the cups at races.  Pinch it so it is easier to drink from, and then I always pour the rest on my head.

*My MIL didn’t have a rubber band for Skye’s hair and used one of these from her produce.  It’s Skye’s new favorite accessory.

*One more style tip from Skye.

*I’m excited to not set my alarm clock like this for a few more weeks…

*Turns out closing my eyes is my favorite way to finish the last stretch of Des News races. July races are no joke.

*It can be more effective than altitude training?? Time to get to work!  I have my first one on Wednesday with Lauren.

Who has a fall race they are working towards?  All of this hot training is going to help us so much.

Almond butter or peanut butter?  Which is better, and do you like adding other flavors to them?

Give me a tangent!

When do kids go back to school in your area?

-I feel like this summer has gone by faster than any other summer.

I’m in east TN and My Kids start next Monday august 1! And teachers, which is me, start in two days july 28!🤣 tbis summer was the fastest but probably because I’m starting a new teaching my job and spent a lot of time preparing the classroom.

I agree , this summer was super fast! I live in southern Louisiana and we (teachers) go back on August 3, with kids starting August 10. I hope you have a great school year!

Oh wow, that is so so soon! Enjoy the last few days of your summer!

TWO DAYS… oh enjoy your last two days. Excited for your new teaching job. Let me know how it goes! Thanks Mary!

I’m doing something a little crazy for my fall race, the Baltimore running festival has an option to run the 5k at 7:30 and the half at 9:30. So I’m doing that hahah! One of my friends and her daughter asked me to do the 5k, but I was already planning on a fall half. Why not do both in one day?? Hoping the hot summer training helps!

Reply

Oh my goodness, this is SO fun. I love that you are doing both!!!

Congrats to all 4 kids for racing! What an awesome family activity to do together! I screenshot the picture at the end about the benefits of heat training because I felt like it was something I needed to hear but also don’t like hearing. :) I hate the heat and humidity that comes with living in the south, but maybe that image will give me a more grateful perspective on those hot runs. Also, my husband and I bit the bullet and finally ordered a Peloton (after over a year of research, saving, and thinking it over). It arrives next week and I am SO EXCITED! You sharing how it helped you become stronger and avoid injury was a key part of convincing me that it would be beneficial in my run journey! Do you have any tips/tricks that you wish you would’ve known before starting? I know I’ll feel like a kid waiting for Christmas until it arrives, lol. Happy Tuesday, Janae!

Emily, this is so exciting. You guys are going to absolutely LOVE IT! One thing I think is so important is if you have a Peloton store near you, go there to get you fitted for where you should set your bike. Watch any instructional movies on how to set it up correctly so you don’t get injured. Start small with it, I started with the 20 minute classes and built up from there. FOLLOW ME AND I’LL FOLLOW YOU and we can cheer each other on. You’ve got this! So thrilled for you guys!

Summer has flown by! I work in elementary age child care and our program runs year round, I’m not ready to switch back to the school year program (I like the field trips, warm weather, and science experiments too much!). Luckily, in MN we don’t start school until the day after Labor Day!

Okay, your summer program sounds so great. I want to come to it! Hope you enjoy this next month so much, Jamisen!

My kids go back Aug 25th! I’m savoring summer and do not want it to end!! Does Brooke train for the 5k? My daughter is 8 and wants to run one but not sure if she needs to train for it!? She’s a kid so gets plenty of exercise just not straight running. She did a 1 mile and ran it with no problems. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Oh it’s gone by way too fast! She hasn’t officially trained for it but plays a ton of soccer and I think that had her ready. Sometimes she comes and runs with me too. If your little girl can just rock 1 mile already, she is set. Try adding on a quarter of a mile each week! Include any walking breaks she needs and here is a post that might help:

I have no idea when my kids go back to school. I guess I should check on that. Thanks for the reminder.

My favorite race is a 15K and it’s 10/1 this year so I’m looking forward to that. I won’t be superfast for it but I’ll be able to finish and my dad will be proud. There’s a half called the End of the World half marathon in late October. You run through the abandoned PA turnpike tunnels. It’s not one you race superfast because you have to wear a headlamp and watch your step in the dark tunnels but it sounds like a lot of fun. I hope to do that one, too.

It’s so nice that your family runs with you. That looks like a lot of fun.

Have a great day!

I did End of the Road in 2020! It was so much fun! The road in the tunnels isn’t actually all that bad since it hasn’t been exposed to all the weather. I’ve been wanting to do it again, but other things keep getting in the way. I hope you get to do it!

We do not go back until the end of August and I am so thankful for that as I AM NOT READY yet.

I hope this next month goes in slow motion! I know you and Hope have had the best summer together!

Not one of your questions but I need to see a better picture of your pretty nails:)

I am planning to run a half marathon in December in Point Clear, AL. Can’t wait! The heat and humidity here is unreal!

Reply

OH I will put a better picture them in tomorrow’s post! Thanks, Rachael! So excited for your marathon and all of this hard work is going to pay off big time in December!

Reply

Hi Janae! Peanut butter and almond butter are both good but my favorite is cashew butter!
It’s super hot here this week! There’s a heat advisory. Our AC has been acting up so I hope it holds up!
Happy Tuesday!

I’m training for Indy monumental marathon. I am trying really hard to do the mental work. Along with the heat and humidity training.
Brooke has the best form! Can she give us any pointers?

Reply

Ahhhh that marathon is on my bucket list. I am so so excited for you. Hahah I’ll have her put together a workshop:). Have the best day and I hope you aren’t missing TdF too much!

The family 5k looks like so much fun! Brooke did awesome!

I have a hilly half mid September. I might sign up for one at the beginning of October because it is flat! I absolutely do not like hot weather training. These past 4 days it has been either cloudy, low humidity or cooler temps and I am loving it! My paces are 10-45 seconds faster/mile. Of course, I have a 5k on Saturday and the heat, humidity and sunshine will be in full force. I might kick back and run it with my daughter instead of racing it;-).

Bhahaha, I think my middle child and Skye would get along well. She always wears 2 different crocs and her clothes are always inside out and/or backwards (or both) and it doesn’t bother her in the slightest.

Have a fabulous Tuesday Janae!

Heat training is amazing (afterwards). I used it to train at sea level for the Lake Tahoe marathon and did great! I had read that it creates similar stressors and adaptations to the blood as altitude and I ever ran above 100ft above sea level but those 90 degree runs were oof.

Dawn, this is so cool to hear. WOW… huge benefits from heat training. You are TOUGH.

Diz Runs re-did a short Podcast about heat training recently. He trains in Florida.

I actually ran a 5K with my son Saturday. I was able to run the entire race with my knee brace and even managed a 7:34 last mile (7:59 average). Better yet, no left hamstring pain that slowed me down all last year (probably due to the brace). I run very sparingly now (3 miles once every week or two) and only run-walk (1 min run/1 min walk); so I was very happy with my result.

That is so cool that you ran with your entire family! Did Beck’s chip trip the timer? Lol, I bet he won his age group!

Reply

Thank you so much, John. I cannot wait to listen. CONGRATS on your 5k with your son and NO hamstring pain. This makes me so happy. I bet you were on cloud 9! Hahaaha he probably did win his age group;). Sadly no chip times because it is a free race. Have the best day!

Oooo… I just love Skye’s style tips! She’s the best!
Way to go Brooke!!! And it’s so fun to do a 5K all together. It really is the best way to start the day 😊
Tangent for the day:. I slept a little longer this morning, so I went to my Barre class 1st, then did speed work on the treadmill. Uuummm…. That felt so much harder! Ha ha. I always do my run first, then strength. My legs were definitely jello when I was walking to my car.
Now that we’re done with our new guest room, we’re moving on to the home office/den. So, we’re making a trip to Ikea for dual desk ideas and lots of storage and organizational help. Wish us luck. But we really are loving this time of reinventing our spaces now that the boys will both be out of the house. Although it is going to feel weird.
Have a good day Janae 😊

I actually bought a personal sauna tent (basically a small tent you sit in that a humidifier like device is hooked up to) to acclimate to heat and humidity for a June marathon in West Virginia since I have lived in dry climates my whole life and die in the humidity. I struggled to make it over 20 minutes sitting in the little tent but my average HR with running ended up dropping 15-20 bpm on runs after doing that. The tent was an affordable option for someone who doesn’t have access to a sauna or want to pay for a gym membership (I got one on sale for $55 at walmart). I used this article to plan things out. https://trainright.com/ultrarunners-heat-acclimation-cheat-sheet/

Okay Brooke is so fast!! She’s only 8 but she would have kicked my but. Haha. Congrats Brooke!

Thank-you for posting the shoes yesterday!!!! They were on sale with an additional 20% off so I am going to try them and I can’t wait! When you race half marathons as a marathon build-up do you do anything different for recovery after the half or your body is just used to recovering quickly?

Team pb all the way! Esp Justin’s or Peter Pan honey roasted!
I have my first destination race (half marathon)in November in Shiner, Texas! November will still be in the 70s potentially, and while it’s hot in TN now (like 95 and always at least 75% humidity) I LOVE running in this temp! The goal is always to see how strong the sports bra & stomach tan can get…..i want it to last until Christmas before it fades🤣
