My goal and let me know if you try this.

(shorts, tank, shoes, sunglasses)

7.11 miles on the trails @ 9:55 average with a few stops to check how the women were doing in the World Championship Marathon.

This picture gave me all the goosebumps.

I felt like I was still recovering from Friday’s workout, but luckily I had my friends to motivate me to get to the top of the hills.

I did a quick 10-minute upper body workout, and then we went to the pool.
Does anyone else find they eat a million PB and j sandwiches in the summer? I can’t get enough.
I gave Skye PB for her apple, but then she decided that oranges and pears dipped into peanut butter were even better. I’m not going to try the combo but if any of you do, let me know so I can tell Skye;)

Beck is going through withdrawals having his cousins gone, so he makes sure to facetime them (even though they live down the street). The hardest part of having all of my nieces and nephews with us was that my refrigerator could not keep up with the ice needs of that many people.

We all love ice too much.

Speaking of ice, I came up with a plan for Saturday. It’s going to be a hot one (low of 75°!!), and I really want to start the race with a bag of ice in my sports bra, but it will surely melt (we take a bus to the starting line) before the starting line if I take the bag. I decided to fill this hydroflask with ice, put it in a bag right before it starts, and put my bottle in my gear drop bag.

Such important decisions, but that ice will save me and all of the water I will dump on my head throughout the race.
My goal for Deseret News on Saturday is to run a 1:17 (net downhill)–> Why not set big goals for ourselves and say them out loud? I find that when I set big goals, if I don’t hit the big goal, I at least run a lot faster than I would if I set too small of goals.

The Deseret News race always brings a lot of big names from Utah (like Jared Ward!), but many of them usually do the 10k. Sarah Sellers ran this half one year (1:12:56), and Makena Myler (1:09:54) did last year… I keep thinking how cool it would be if either of them came back for it again. They always give great prize money out for Utahns at this race which would help me justify all of my Nikes, but who knows who will show up on Saturday!

A weird food combo that you enjoy?

Can you drink liquid without ice?

-Unless it is hot chocolate, I must have ice in my drink.

Something you eat during the summer way more than any other time of year?

Hottest race you have ever done?

I ran a relay in southern Utah (Top of Zion) one year where the temperature was 107 during my first leg. The road actually melted the bottom of my husband’s Hokas.

Stop it! That is so so crazy! Betsy, you are amazing. Have the best day.

Avid runner and follower of your blog. Your advice is so often spot on! I’ve exhausted my search for a running tank with a tight fit and a shelf bra! I feel like these do not exist anymore. My favorite of all time was the Sugoi Jackie Power tank. With your knowledge and following just maybe me and others will be victorious! Thanks and keep on keeping on!

I typically drink liquids without ice. Except during summer running, when I add a bunch of ice to my water bottle!

I have smoothies and açaí bowls much more during summer than any other time during the year.

Teach me how to go without ice. We just had smoothies for breakfast. The absolute best. Hope your day is off to a great start, Mariah!

-I am a no ice kind of girl. I always say “very European of me.”
-I need to pin this American women marathon photo next to my Des Boston 2018 photo at my work desk!
-Tour de France hot tip! They put ice in nylon and then stick it down their backs. It lets the ice melt through as opposed to a bag. Get Andrew in a pace car to hand off ice to you throughout the race! haaa

You and my sister are very European:) Yes, yes you do. So inspirational. Ummmm I need to try that out on Saturday. Nobody knows the TdF better than you. Hope your Tuesday is a great one!

Yes! I love that you set big goals and tell us! I think the celebration is even better that way! Hottest race I’ve ever run was the Hotlanta Half in Atlanta in June. They gave out popsicles at one water stop and it was glorious!!
This summer we’ve been making homemade ice cream and homemade popsicles so I’ve eaten a lot of yummy frozen treats. :)

Reply

I totally agree, the celebration is even better. Hotlanta Half… I would have grabbed ten of those popsicles. You are so strong. You’ll have to send me your favorite popsicles recipe. I’ve been meaning to make some. Have a great day, Karen!

That is such a good plan for getting your ice to the start line.
I can drink water without ice, but only in the cooler months, and only if I have to, ha ha. I can also drink a sparkling water without ice (straight from the bottle or can), but it needs to be really cold.
Oh my goodness… My very 1st marathon I ever did was the hottest! LA was having a massive heat wave, record setting highs, that fell on marathon weekend in March. Thank goodness for all of the spectators that had baggies of ice, a fire truck right at mile 18 that was spraying the runners, and then the finish line at the Santa Monica pier! That was quite an introduction to marathoning.
Speaking of heat, we are having it quite hot, plus it’s humid! So I am heading to the gym with the AC and fans!
Have a good day Janae 😊

Thanks Wendy! I’m with you on also being able to drink out of a cold can of something without ice but that’s it:). YOUR FIRST MARATHON was your hottest?! You are so strong and I am so glad there was so much support throughout the marathon to help. I want a fire truck spraying water on Saturday’s course too. Good luck with the heat and humidity and I’m so glad you have that option again for the gym on days like that after it was closed for so long. Thanks Wendy, you too!

I love sweet corn mixed with mac & cheese – sometimes I throw some mashed potatoes in there too. :)
Coincidently, we eat a ton of sweet corn in the summer. There’s a local produce stand we buy from every year, it’s the best corn ever.
The hottest race I ever did was the Air Force 10K in Sept 2018, I don’t know what the high temp was, but my husband was running the full marathon (his 1st) and he wasn’t able to finish because they black flagged the race. :( Have to keep the runners safe though! This race is always a scorcher – Ohio in September is wildly unpredictable.

Reply

Amanda, I think you are onto something with that combo, I can absolutely see myself trying that. Sweet corn sounds so good right now, I want to come to that stand. Your poor husband, that must have been so hard and I hope he has been able to do more since then. I have heard that from Andrew (he lived there for two years), you just never know what you are going to get. Happy Tuesday friend!

Good morning, Janae! Very clever way to manage your ice for the race! I’m not much of an ice person. If it’s super hot, I might toss a couple of cubes into a beverage, but that’s about it. I’m more of a cool than cold girl.
The food I eat more in the summer than any other time is melon – especially watermelon!!! That ties directly into what may be considered a weird food combo. I love Tajin (a Mexican chili-lime spice blend) on all the melons! If you enjoy a little spicy kick in your food, give it a try :o)
Honestly, it’s less the temperature and more the humidity that gets me here in the northeast. I have definitely run races and had training runs when the humidity is over 80%. It’s pretty gross and you feel like you NEVER stop sweating!
Have a great Tuesday, Janae!

Reply

Thank you, Janine! Melon is just so good right now but I haven’t tried your combo. I know for a fact that Andrew will love it so we will have to try it, thank you! I fully agree with you that the humidity is a bigger issue than the heat. I’m hoping that on Saturday we have way less humidity than we’ve been having. I’m ready to stop sweating so much. Thanks Janine, you too!

Not sure how strange it is but I love a peanut butter sandwich with salt and vinegar chips in it – bonus points if the bread is toasted. Had this sandwich in my special needs bag that we get to access halfway through the marathon during each of my Ironman races and it would bring me back to life. :-)

Definitely going to try the ice in sports bra trick for my long run this weekend since we’re predicted to have a “feels like” temp of 104. Southwestern Ontario humidity is the bomb.

Also, ice all the time, doesn’t matter what the weather is. I carry around an insulated bottle with ice with whatever I’m drinking and a fridge without an ice maker is not even a consideration. :-)

Reply

Mary, I must try your sandwich. That actually sounds so good to me and those are my favorite types of chips. I love that you had these during your ironman races, you are so Incredibly strong. GOOD LUCK THIS WEEKEND. I will think about you when I start complaining about my 75 degree temps. Love to hear from another ice obsessed person. Happy Tuesday!

75 degrees for the low sounds so hot!!! Hopefully the ice keeps you nice and cool.
Makenna Myler is actually my sister in-law! That was fun to see her name when I read your post this morning.
Good luck this Saturday! All you runners are amazing!!!

WHAT!??!?!?!? Oh my goodness that is incredible. Tell her I am a HUGE fan of her.

I’m really hoping that the ice saves me, thank you so much Allison!

I will tell her for sure! :)

I’m so excited about your big goal, and admire your bravery in putting it out there! I’m still slightly sidelined with a hip issue, but am now tolerating slow running a few times a week. My goal is to rest up to build again for Boston next year. With my husband’s work schedule, I really only have time for one big race each year, and I’m fine with that for now.
I put ketchup on everything, as do my kids — fish, broccoli, cottage cheese. Love it.
I need ice in every cold drink (even milk and OJ) except when I’m chugging water after a workout. That water needs to be room temp or I get brain freeze!
I ran a half marathon last summer that was a heat index (it’s humid here) of 96 degrees at the time I finished. There was no shade on the course, and I was just miserable. Give me a cloudy 40 degree day anytime!

Reply

Thank you, Stacey. I am so glad you are back to getting out a few times a week but hoping your hip is 100% asap. I love that goal! I have been thinking about doing Boston again next year, that would be so fun to meet up. I love ketchup so much too! Interesting about the cold water after a workout, I haven’t experienced that luckily. NINETY-SIX… I just cannot even imagine. And the sun beating on you the whole time, wow. Yep, I am all about that chilly weather for race day too. Happy Tuesday!

Hi Janae! Good luck with your goal! I’ll be cheering for you! And thanks for sharing it ahead of time!
I think the hottest race I did once was for work and it was in the 90s during lunch. It was a 5k and I just started getting a cold. Needless to say it was miserable!
Have an awesome day!

Reply

Thank you so much, Amy! Ummmm that 5k sounds miserable. Thanks Amy, you too! Hope your new cat is doing well!

Tell Skye that I think PB with oranges & pears sounds delicious!! PB is good with everything IMO!

Reply

heat isn’t my friend!
The hottest race was Ironman Coeur d’Alene. It was 100+F and the humidity was awful. Terrible. I used so many sponges, sprayers, ice chunks….

I watched the women’s marathon in Eugene-it was beyond exciting and team USA was amazing! They were running so fast yet also waved every so often-it was incredible. We felt there were more spectators on Monday than on Sunday when the men raced!

Ice is great in certain drinks but I don’t think about it (plus I live in Europe so ice is a no-go).

Corn on the cob is summer to me!
