The lessons in running and racing never stop!  It doesn’t matter how many races I do, I learn a bit more about myself at each one.  I love that about racing, even if the lessons are a bit painful.

Andrew and I stayed up at the Marriott Hotel in SLC.   That energy drink of his was very needed.

I woke up a bit before 4 a.m. with about 6 hours of sleep which felt pretty good.  I ate a bagel in bed, took a shower, and then got ready.  Andrew and I met my friends in the lobby at 4:25 and then jumped on the bus that picked us up at the hotel.  My time at the Vigor Half-Marathon earned me an elite spot, including the hotel room/bus pickup.

Lauren and I are riding a lot of buses together these days.

We got to the starting line at 5 a.m.  We used the porta potties, talked with friends, and did a mile w/u @ 10:00.   I made the silly decision to not put a bag of ice in my bra at this time and dump water over my head instead, which was a terrible decision.  I should have taken the bag of ice with me.

The race started at 6:01, and I jumped right into my fastest mile of the day (5:31), but that was also because it was the biggest drop in elevation during that mile.  It was fast.  

At mile 2, I realized that I was really hot already but tried to distract myself with anything and everything that I could.  I kept my miles at around 5:45-5:57 (plenty of downhill) and saw Andrew right as we got out of the canyon (mile 7?).  Once we were out, I just kept getting hotter and hotter.  

I focused on pumping my arms, staying present, and having mini goals of getting to the next stop-light rather than thinking I had x more miles to go.  I think that is the key for running with me… as soon as I think about how much further I have to go when I hurt, the sooner I want to stop and quit.  If I can focus on doing the NOW (right foot, left foot, right, left), I can chip away at the course. 

I felt like I was in survival mode for that last 5 miles, but weirdly was having fun too.  I don’t know how those two things go together, but I truly love races even when they hurt.

We have to welcome the pain because we know it is coming.

I took a caffeinated Maurten right before the race started, another at mile 4, and then another normal Maurten at mile 9.  

The two trickiest parts of the race were that I didn’t get water from miles 7 on, and it was hard.  For some reason, a few of the water tables were not there, and then when I finally came across one at mile 12, a group of people in the 5k stopped right in front of me, and I twisted my ankle pretty bad.  I forgot about the water at that point because my ankle was all I was thinking about.  It didn’t injure me, luckily!  I don’t think I’ve ever felt so dehydrated at a race… I only had water twice at mile 3 & 7 (only one other water table at .3 but I had dropped the cup there).  The other hard part is when you hit mile 10; you join up with the 5k and that was pretty packed for about a mile and caused a lot of weaving.  I will bring a bottle or two with me next time and prepare for the weaving and know that things will spread out again for the last two miles.

Do you know those finish lines that feel like an optical illusion?  When I turned the corner to this street and ran towards it, the finish line seemed to be farther and farther away.  I was lucky to have Andrew there riding with me and then my coach jumping in and running with me too but it felt like the last .5 mile lasted for two miles.  My last mile was 61 seconds slower than my first mile…. definitely not the best way to race, but it happens:). 

Counting steps for that last stretch also helped me not to stop and walk to the finish when I wanted to.

They make it easy to get your results right after you finish the race.  This race is incredibly organized from start to finish (minus the water mishap).   Not my goal but I am so happy I didn’t quit–> 5:31, 5:44, 5:49, 5:51, 5:57, 5:48, 5:51, 6:19, 6:02, 6:19, 6:10, 6:12, 6:32, 6:34 pace for last bit.  Positive splits for positive people, as Ali would say;)

Is there a better post-race treat after feeling fried on a course?  I think not.  I chugged two big water bottles within minutes of finishing.  I felt dehydrated, so I need to just plan on bringing a small water bottle or two with me on hot days because I can’t always rely on water being there when I want it.

It was so good to catch up with friends!  PS I don’t wear the Runner’s Corner top anymore because I didn’t make the team this year!  It stung initially, but it has been a good thing for me to teach my kids that you don’t always make the team, but that can’t stop us from reaching our goals.  The RC team is amazing this year!  (Lauren (new PR!), Tawny, and Alison below)

*Emo ran a half pr!  We went to high school together, and everyone called us twins back then.  

A few more items to talk about:

*I did this 10k course in 2019 (the last 6.2 miles of the half I did) with a 6:11 average pace and did the half this year with a 6:03 average pace.  Big things are going to happen in St. George (and I’m so happy I’ll be able to have bottles at that race)!

*For the first time ever, I put my phone in the drop bag.  I didn’t want to run with it but wanted it to take some pictures before the race.  It was a good decision; I loved only having my gels and chapstick on me. 

*Andrew had the idea that I start doing a run or two a week in the middle of the day.  An easy run but something to help me to get stronger with the heat because it is my arch nemesis with running.

*I think I DO like running a mile or two or three the day before a half-marathon.  I go back and forth on this, but I think I will try it for my next half.

*Just my paparazzi photo of Jared Ward… he ran a 27:53 in the 10k and won.  He told Andrew at the expo he loved his mustache:)

*Andrew went further on his bike, trying to see me all over the course than I ran.  It was so nice to see him so many times and so nice of my in-laws to stay with the kids so we could have a race getaway.

*The two times I had water to drink I also poured some on my head.  It was like an INSTANT relief the second the water touched my skin.  I need to send a thank-you card to the man at mile 11 with a fan spraying water on the course.  It felt heavenly.

*This course had signs up about .25 miles before the photographer to let you know they are up ahead.  Let’s see if that translates into more smiles in the race photos than usual.  

*I ran over the timing mat during the warm-up and was a bit stressed that it would start tracking my time then; luckily, it did not.

*I came in 5th place and was passed by 4th place at about mile 7.  It was the cutest thing because her dad was on a Vespa and kept coming up next to her (in the proper lane drivers needed to be in) and cheering for her.  It was really sweet to watch.

*We finished with a 3.44-mile c/d @ 8:24 pace –> 17.64 miles for the day.  A Cubby’s (my current favorite Utah restaurant) burger and sweet potato fries (with extra salt) tasted so so good.  

*Pretty dang excited about this today… we are all running together for Utah’s largest race!  It was Utah’s holiday yesterday, hence all of the festivities.

Does anyone else heat train? Give me tips, please. I want to get better at it!

Ever been cut from a team?

Andrew is ready to shave his stache, and I want him to keep the mustache. Shave it or keep it (obviously, he can shave it if he wants, but we are just kidding around with each other on this:)?

Does anyone else live in the same area they lived in during high school? Do you run into people from your school often?

I heat train. It can mess with me mentally so I have to remind myself that heat training is about the heat, not the pace. To boost myself mentally, I run a route where the last 1.75 miles are downhill. I also wear a hat that I can pour water on. And definitely use that bag of ice LOL

Welll done! Your fitness is so fun to watch, Your Journey inspired me to break 3… and While I don’t know if can get where you are, it’s a continued inspiration!
Heat and humidity isn’t easy – we haven’t had a day under 100 as the high (and humidity has stayed 60-90%) where I live in Texas… so I guess for me it just happens naturally, ha. Come visit and we can call it Texas training camp, ha! But I think middle of the day is good advice – I’ve even tried that here … it’s one thing to run in a soggy early morning, and another to do it in full sun.
I think when you do it just give yourself a ton of grace about pace.
Also sending solidarity for joining other races when on the pain cave – my local marathon joins up with the half at mile 20. Last year, a half runner stopped completely in front of me at mile 23, causing me to have to stop as well… I was first female so they just weren’t prepared that runners were joining them… but I was admittedly a little afraid I wouldn’t start my legs again! (I did and maintained the W)

Oh my goodness, Baili! That is INCREDIBLE! Sub 3 wahoo. Wish we could train together and you can totally go further with it if you want… I checked out at 2:59 but my friends talked me into going further! Ummm Texas training camp sounds scary. But I’m in:) All about the grace… so true. Oh my goodness, that must have been so so hard during a MARATHON (and first female, you are incredible). Way to get those legs going again. Hope your day is a beautiful one and we need you to move here and train with us:).

I would love, love, love that – I have determined that some altitude and trails is much more fun than heat and humidity…even though it is also hard!

I I was wondering about the team. Kinda shocked you didn’t make it with your times lately. They must have insanely speedy people on the team.
Good job in the heat and without water! It stormed both Saturday and Sunday morning here so I had to do my long run after work yesterday afternoon. I asked my husband to bike next to me for the sake of fluids. So helpful!

It was pretty confusing to me too! It wasn’t Hawk’s decision anymore so I’m not quite sure what they based it all off of and I couldn’t wear the jersey to Boston because of Amazon so I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it! Holy cow! How fast are the runners on that team if you didn’t make it?!? That stinks though- I’m sorry. I agree that when those types of things happen it’s so good for our kids to see it. What better way to learn that it takes more energy to be upset than to see their parents living that way?

I LOVE running 5ks together. We didn’t get to do this years 4th or July one because we were camping, but there are three more we usually do coming up that I’m planning on. My daughter is 4 so still in the stroller (is Skye for 5k?) and nothing brings out my competitive side like the second half of a 5k that I previously told myself I was just running for fun when I start counting people I pass with the stroller!!

Speaking of SLC, I just read about the lake drying up. How awful! :(. I cannot believe I hadn’t read about it before last week. I didn’t even realize there was so much agriculture to divert so much water- like 70% I think I read? I’ve only been to Utah once but it was so beautiful and it’s so sad to hear about the environment being harmed like that. We are planning two big camping trips and one of them we are planning to go near Antelope Island and then down to Zion. That part of the country is so beautiful.

Yeah, there are some realllllly fast out-of-my-league runners but my marathon times definitely compete in there so who knows! I was definitely bummed but it was a good lesson for all of us! Amen to it taking more energy to be upset! Skye was in and out of the stroller throughout the race! Passing people while pushing a stroller… umm you are amazing. So excited for your 5ks coming up! I honestly have been freaking out about the lake situation. I really don’t know what will happen! YAY for coming to Utah, you’ll have to share everything you did with me. Well done! So speedy in the heat.

I don’t heat train but running in the heat is brutal.

I did run a trail race this weekend and there was still snow lol. It was definitely a rough 35km..36km because if you weren’t going up you were going down. Lol. We started with climbing. And when I finished someone told me they extended the cutoffs by 30 min mid race because it was so tough out there . My whole body still aches lol.

Idea for next race: Andrew bikes with fluids for you! He could toss a bottle at you and then you could toss it back.

Idk how you only did water twice I am the same I hate hot races and i get very cranky if there isn’t enough fluids

Ahhhh that’s what I was worried about… we weren’t sure if it was legal to take fluids from someone off the course and at that point I was still thinking I might have a chance at placing for $$ (only Utahns could get money and I wasn’t sure if the girls in front of me were from Utah or college runners ((can’t accept over $300)) so we tried to play it safe. I wanted his bottle so bad haha. Thanks Sara, you are the best. Have a great day!

Oof, getting cut from a team is never fun, even if you understand it rationally. I love that you’re out there crushing it regardless! Are you hoping to be able to run with them again?

Not that it’s the same as a 13.1 mile race, but running today in EXTREME humidity was rough. I cut my run short because my body was just done, and I felt so drained after, even running slower and shorter. Highly recommend nuun tablets in your ice water, lots of hydration, and with the humidity, I’ve learned to lower my expectations or completely throw them out the window. I run a lot slower, it hurts more, I might need breaks, but I CAN do it. Emily Infeld posted on instagram a couple years ago that running in the humidity is like running at altitude, and she was excited to see the results when the weather cooled off . . . and I’ve learned that come fall, I run SO much better than I did in the spring with the heat training!

Hawk (my old coach) isn’t in charge of the team anymore and if he was again then I would but not unless that happens! I would have cut it short too, humidity is scary hard for me. Have a fun 5k today with the family!

No water for the last 6 miles of a half – OMG. That sounds like torture, your mouth must have been so dry. Ugh.

I do heat train a decent amount, some of it is because I don’t have a choice when it’s already “feels like 86F” at 5 am here in DC. But for me, a lot of my runs are at the end of a triathlon in the summer so they’re gonna be at least 70F, if not hotter. One thing you want to avoid is doing your key sessions (speedwork, tempos, etc) in really hot conditions because that compromises your ability to produce the output target and can really take too long to recover from. So keep doing those hard workouts away from the heat as much as possible.

I’m leaving for Boston in a couple of hours, gonna have to get ice cream and chocolate. I’ll take pics for you.

It really was torture, I couldn’t believe it. I cannot believe those temps at 5 in the morning. That is nuts. Good to know about avoiding the hard stuff in the heat, so just short and easy in the heat? I need to read that article you sent, I really appreciate it. Enjoy all of the treats… I’m so jealous. Wait! Why in the world were you cut from the Runners Corner team??? That seems crazy. You’re running better than ever! Anyway congratulations on this race! I know it wasn’t your A goal but you still ran FAST. Heat is definitely hard- ice in your bra would have helped, but it would have melted after a few miles. I like Andrew’s suggestion to get more heat training in- it can only help. And… shave it! Nothing personal- Andrew looks good, but I just don’t like facial hair : )

I was wondering if you could explain your paces in workouts a bit more? It seems like you’re racing your workouts- when I see you do downhill workouts at paces you don’t hit for a mile on a flat mile race it doesn’t make sense. Actually it seems like all your workouts are downhill. I k ow you do a ton of climbing on easy days (but is that really easy then?) but why no hill repeats?

Hey Annie! I’m not sure if you read the whole post but I was really struggling from dehydration and heat. My eyes were blurry and I had the worst headache. That played a big role in me slowing down. I probably had a total of 1/4 cup of water (no gatorade) total for the race and that was in the beginning. We do hill intervals and have a big one on Wednesday to conquer:). It was definitely new to me when I started training with this group but I feel like my 2:54 at Boston on a very short training cycle is a great indicator that it works for me! I know our downhill courses/races are upsetting for you from the past few races/comments but that is basically all of the races in Utah! I’ve really enjoyed such a different approach to training, it makes it so fun and exciting for me. Have a beautiful day!

Heat training is GREAT but I do think it’s possible to heat overtrain. That was one of the reasons I didn’t want to do a fall marathon, the heat burns me out, especially since all my runs are middle of the day! My key is taking tons of salt tabs and electrolyte drinks—current fav to run with is pineapple skratch!
I have no doubt there will be big things for you at St George!!!!!!!

You are a muscular goddess! I am so proud of you. I’m sad you were cut from the Runner’s Corner team, but it sounds like you have the right attitude.
I hate running in the heat, too. The kids wanted to do a stroller run Saturday morning to a playground 3 miles away… it was 90 degrees with high humidity. They felt great with popsicles and a breeze, but I was so… soooo… sweaty. I felt bad for the other parents around us at the playground.
My dad had a moustache growing up and shaved it at midnight on December 31, 2000. He didn’t tell any of us he was doing it, and it was still one of the best surprises of my life. I say, whatever Andrew wants to do is fine. It’s just hair! It grows back :)

Amazing job at your race!!! I’m sorry about getting cut from the team :( that is a sucky feeling, but your progress lately show that you can improve no matter what!

I don’t really heat train, I try to find the coolest times to run. But even at 6 am here, it was in the 80s with high humidity, so I guess that’s heat training? Haha.

Good morning, Janae! Maybe not exactly the race you were hoping for, but you did awesome with the heat and so little water. You look so strong in those pics!
It’s hard to escape training in heat & humidity in the northeast. However, it’s like other things – if your race is at altitude, you do some training at altitude. If your race is hilly, better do some training runs with hills. Same goes for heat training. Be sure to carry water with you, stash it ahead of time on your route, or plan a loop route where you know you can have some. Also, trust your gut – if you think ice will help, use it. It always melts and if it bothers you after you get started, you can always pitch it at a water stop :o)
Surprised you didn’t make the team, because you are so dang fast. Your attitude about it is just the best though. We will never get everything we want and learning how to cope with it well is such a character builder.

I find it easier to train in the colder weather for sure…I just hydrate a lot, try to run early early…near water, and with friends doing the same so I have to show up and run…
making it my goal this week to learn all about native Canadian runner named Tom Longboat…won Boston in 1907, there’s a bit about his training methods…which were a lot like how we train now….and watching the female version of the tour de france..

You did amazing! That heat is no joke and you rocked through it!

You are right on the kids seeing you not make something but keep working toward your goals—that is a good life lesson right there. They might be too young but also remember Michael Jordan didn’t make his high school basketball team. There are all kinds of stories like that(I think Albert Einstein struggled in school as well) where one event does not define you and your goals. I tried out for the dance team in college and didn’t make it. But I really really can’t believe you didn’t make the team…..(I’m like the mom ready to call the coach, lol)

I don’t heat train on purpose but sometimes if I missed the morning run and it is in the 80’s I might tell myself that I can take it for 3 miles. I might be outgrowing that though–I haven’t done it this summer—I’ve just gotten on the treadmill. The heat scares me. Be careful if you do it.

I do live where I went to high school. Every once in a while I’ll run into someone from school, but I am usually surprised as to how long it’s been given how small of a town we live in!

It is ALWAYS heat (and humidity) training in Tennessee. I actually prefer sweating it out than freezing. And I don’t move fast in the mornings, so I usually opt for afternoon runs, even in the heat. I have tried a few before work runs and they just don’t work well for me. My paces are a minute slower or more per mile, and I just don’t enjoy it as much.

Way to go—racing in Utah in the summer is no joke!!! And I am also shocked that you didn’t make the RC team; your times lately have been screaming fast! I’d love a post on how all of that works out (do you have to run a time trial on the day and the top ten people get in, or is it based on race performance?) if you’re up for it!

I do heat training only bc I live in the Midwest and it’s brutally hot and humid no matter how early you start! At the beginning of the summer I made myself memorize one of those tables about perceived rate of exertion and how it changes based on humidity and heat indexes so I could let myself slow down and not try to nail the same pace I can run at 45 degrees. I also hydrate like crazy and really watch my electrolytes.

I will! I have a 1/2 marathon early Aug in NYC, so I’m hoping to try them then, but my feet still aren’t used to it. It’s almost like I can’t feel the ground.. maybe on my next 5 or 10K. I feel like my thighs get more of a workout and yes, super springy. I took 10 minutes off my last 5K in them but my feet and legs were more thrashed… fingers crossed. :)

Wow, what an awesome race! I’m sorry that certain things worked against you (heat, lack of water, etc.) but end result, and most importantly, your attitude is inspiring. Heat training is no joke- where I live in Louisiana, it gets so hot and humid that summer running is a nightmare! I will only run early in the morning or else on my treadmill at certain times of the year. Congrats on an awesome race and thanks always for the inspiration!

Amazing job Janae!! Heat is just so hard to race in!!
Such a bummer about some water tables not being there. I ran a half marathon a couple years ago, where I got so hot so quickly. It was so hard for me to stay focused from mile 2.5 on because of it too. So way to stay in the game!!
I have been wondering about you and Runners Corner. I’m sorry, but yes, a great lesson for the kids as well as yourself.
I have sort of taken the last 2 weeks very easy (probably because of the 2 weddings), but I am feeling ready to get back into a running/workout routine again. Didn’t plan on this downtime, but maybe my body and mind needed it.

Congrats on your race!! I am sorry you didn’t make the Runner’s Corner team; I fully agree with using it as a lesson to teach your kids. I always say that I don’t mind if people know I failed, we all fail more than we succeed, and we must not let the thought of failure stop us from trying.

You’ve been killing it with your run outfits – they’re all so cute! How do you like your Tracksmith shorts? This is the second time I am asking you about shorts… the first time was about your Outdoor Voices ones and I ended up buying them and I love them.

You really powered through a hot hot day, and with limited water??!! I remember running the Pasadena Marathon on a very hot 90+ day, they ran out of water at the 20 mile stop. A sweet volunteer (who was clearly upset over the lack of water) picked up a huge jug to drop the last few drops in my mouth. You dealt with it very well and gracefully, I admit I cried a few tears and was overall “poor pitiful me” for miles 20-22 hahahaha.

You didn’t make the team, are they CrAZy? I can’t fathom why, that seems completely nuts to me. You have just been so speedy, confident and STRONG! If some time goes by, and you feel comfortable with it – I’d love to read about that. But it’s personal, maybe not anyone’s business.

Anyway, fabulous race and congrats!!! I hope the 5k family day was lots of fun :)

Oh my goodness, a MARATHON in those temps! That volunteer saved you guys. Oh honestly, I’m fine sharing everything I know but I’m also still pretty confused about it! I wasn’t able to wear their top at Boston (I was working with Amazon for that race) which might have caused some problems and some of the athletes are MUCH faster than me but I also have faster marathon/half times than a few of the team members too. I also didn’t have a lot of fast races the previous year so that could have played into things. I’m still kind of stumped at the reasoning! Hawk (my old coach) is also no longer choosing the team members so I like to think that he would have had me on the team and that softens the blow;). I think Andrew is on to something! I’m currently following trackclubbabe’s fast marathon plan for Chicago marathon and I have no choice but to heat train as it’s almost 100 degress with the humidex by 7 a.m. here on a regular basis. I keep trying to convince myself it will mean faster times – although now i feel definitely more tortoise than hare. :-)

Hi Janae! As usual, so inspired by your drive and attitude; congrats on a tough race even though it wasn’t the result you originally wanted! I am curious about your recent shift toward crop tops for your workouts/races. I know in the past you wore longer tops and I’m just wondering how you worked up the nerve to rock the crop tops (they are great, by the way!!!). I feel so self-conscious in anything that shows my stomach, but sometimes I really want to wear one when it’s hot and I don’t feel like dealing with ANY extra fabric. Just curious if you have any tips or advice on how to power through and not be self-conscious about it. Thanks!!

Wow great job with your race! You did a fantastic job! Sorry to hear about the runners corner team- I wondered a little about what happened with some of your old training partners and wearing their shirts at races. I have a hard time understanding how someone as strong, fast and as positive as you would not have a spot on that team! You have a great outlook on being an example for your kids! Love reading about your training- thanks janae!

You absolutely amaze me, congrats, what a great time!
I despise races that meet up at points on the course. I did a half a few years ago where the 5k, 10k, AND half marathon met up with arrows going different ways depending on what race you were doing (drawn on the ground in chalk). It was complete chaos. The 10k was the 5k loop TWICE!! It was mid-July in New England humidity, the start time kept getting pushed back so by the time we started we had lost about 45 minutes. I have to say, they handled the feedback well and improved the races by splitting it up over two days, but it was awful. You are bringing back bad memories haha!

Congrats on your race! Your tenacity and mental toughness always inspire me :)

I ran cross country in high school in southern Nevada. In August, our afternoon practices were often over 100 degrees and not a ton of shade. Sunscreen is super important!! Also be sure to hydrate well the 24 hours before.
