Tuesday Tangents

(tank, bra, shorts, socks, shoes)

Monday’s and Thursday’s are trail days from here on out and so we did 10 miles @ 9:04 pace with 1300 ft of climbing.

Turns out we all like the same socks.

I didn’t take a lot of pictures of the above run but I did from my hike/run with Skye. Andrew was studying, Beck was napping and the two of us decided to get outside.

Her endurance is much higher than mine was when I was 4 years old.
She prefers to hike up and run down and I gladly joined her. I need to get her a pack… any kid pack recommendations?

Of course, we brought some candy.

As much as it is hard on everyone to have Brooke and Knox gone, I do think the littles enjoy allllllll of the attention that they get.

Tangent time:

*When you are going through your pantry and find things that have been hidden for years. These were one of my pregnancy cravings with Beck and I was hiding them from my family…

*A day at a time. My friend that is giving me my training sent me the long-term workout plan leading up to the St. George Marathon. The plan is intimidating and those workouts in August/September look scary. No matter how many times I marathon train, I have to remind myself to take the training a day at a time. The build-up happens by just completing one day at a time, there is no need to waste any energy worrying about what is up ahead. Focus on today and the magic will happen.

*When just the sample cup of froyo puts him in the best mood ever.

*A photo of Brooke laughing as my sister was telling her about her substitute teaching days. When I was in high school, my sister would substitute teach for my school. She ended up taking a long-term subbing job for one of my classes and my sister says that I didn’t stop talking no matter how many times she had to move my seat or put me in the corner;). I was a talker.

*Last week, Mary shared that she always eats her pizza crust first and so I went with her method yesterday. It is officially the best way to eat a pizza.

*Beretta is so sweet to these kids.

*I am back on my foam rolling streak again. If I want to train, the extras just have to be a part of my life.

Were you a talker in school or quiet or somewhere in between?

Anyone reading that is pregnant right now… tell me some of your biggest cravings!

Have a good book you are reading or recently read? Tell me!

I recommend a lightweight back that holds a water bladder. Back in the day we got ours at REI but backcountry probably has them.

My motto definitely has been to have them carry their water at an early age :) But in addition to the bladder, the lightweight back is an actual backpack so can hold layers of clothing and snacks as well.

The only concern with a bladder at this age is 1) will they chew on the reservoir tip and 2) if water is too accessible will they drink it too quickly. My son was 5 when he started wearing one and he did both, but quickly learned not to.

I need to copy that motto and thank you for those two tips… I’ll work with her at the beginning with those. Hope your day is a fabulous, Jessey!

I was super quiet in high school unless I was with my friends then I never shut up!! But I didn’t want to get in trouble in class. I started reading ‘Verity’ by Colleen Hoover yesterday and I’m loving it so far! I also read ‘Where the crawdads sing’ recently and loved it and can’t wait to see the movie next month! And my dog Kizzy turned 6 years old last month and we’ve had her since she was 3 months old!

Haha get you with your friends and you couldn’t stop talking:). I loved ‘Where the crawdads sing’ and I wish we could all go see the movie together. I just looked up ‘Verity’ and I have to read it… I love a good thriller. Happy birthday to Kizzy last month, she sounds so great. Have a beautiful day, Erin!

I love your reminder about taking it one day at a time during marathon training. I’ve done a few half marathons, but am training for my first marathon this fall. I’m nervous and intimidated by those big numbers coming up on the training schedule! Any tips for a first time marathoner? I’m a super slow runner and will be run/walking it which makes it seem more manageable. My goal is to finish!

I. Am. So. Excited. For. You. Your first marathon ahhhhhh! You’ve got this! This would be an excellent blog post topic… I’ll have it up in the next week, would that work? BUT most importantly, focus on one day at a time! Don’t even think about those 20 milers until you are there! Check each day off and it will combine perfectly to reach your goals. YOU’VE GOT THIS!

That would be awesome! You are so sweet – thank you for your encouragement!

I would also love a post about first time marathon tips! Will you cover fueling, please? Training for my first marathon, too, and really struggling trying to understand when and how, and to carry water or not, carry for training but use what on course when racing, etc.? Thanks!

YES YES YES!!!!!! So so excited for you! Expect the post on Monday!

All my kids have the Camelbak Mini MULE. It’s got a bladder and enough room to stash some snacks, but not so big that we unintentionally load them down. Even my 15 year old can get by with using just that for most hikes! But our kids started carrying their own water and snacks around age 4-5 and we haven’t looked back.

Thank you so much for the recommendation, I will be copying you guys. Have a great day, Chelsea!

Love that you and Skye got to hike together! When we were little my dad would take us on a hike and bring candy that he called “power pills”. So when we got tired he would break out the power pills and all of the sudden we could keep going :) I am 30 now and still refer to my candy as power pills :)

POWER PILLS… Oh I have to copy that with my kids. Thank you for sharing that with me, it made me smile. Hope you have a beautiful day with some power pills asap:) Thanks Anna!

What hiking pack do you and/or Andrew use? Right now I just have a backpack my old company gave me lol. But it fits my water and my dogs water bottle easily and my car keys. Open to other suggestions! Bailey is 4.5 years old.

I just finished a book called The Woods by Harlan Coben and enjoyed it. Then last night I started The Lies I Tell by Julie Clark and am hooked 45 pages in!

Hey Maureen! This is the pack that we both use and love for trail running and I just bring it hiking too: https://shopstyle.it/l/bIl8u. We both love it! 4.5… Bailey and Skye were probably born around the same time:). Off to go get The Lies I tell, thank you for sharing!

How fun to have a hike with just you and Skye!
Just yesterday, a memory popped up on Facebook from 10 years ago of a hike my youngest and I did together, just the 2 of us 😊. I know it is tough when Brooke and Knox are gone, but this time with Skye and Beck is so special.
Oooo, I need to get back into the habit of ALL of the good recovery stuff. That is definitely so important.
Both our dogs lived until around 15 ( Duke, our 1st was 14.5,. Gizmo was 15.5). Life with dogs is the best. I’m starting to feel we may need to get a new one soon.
Still being very cautious with my planter fasciitis, but going to do treadmill run and see how that feels.
Have a great day Janae 😊

It really was so much fun. Oh I love that that memory popped up and now he is off to college soon! TIME FLIES! Thank you, it really is and I’ve been focusing on that huge positive of the situation. 15! You will have to keep me updated on whether or not you get another dog soon. SO smart to keep being cautious, ugggg planter is the worst. Thanks Wendy, hope those treadmill miles feel great!

River is 2. She is the love of our life lol. Maybe not in School but if you ask Jason I am a talker lol . He sometimes asks for silence.

Have a great day janae !

RIVER IS THE CUTEST. I always get so happy when I see a picture of her. Haha Andrew has the same request at times. Thanks Kristine, you too!

Hi Janae! A few years ago I did a half-marathon training program with my local running store. I had a few races under my belt at that time but many were doing the half for the first time. The coaches only gave us 4 weeks of the training at a time. They told us it was so we didn’t freak out when we saw the higher mileage. Probably not a bad idea in general!
Oh, and my daughter always eats her pizza crust first. She is now 14 and has been eating it that way for as long as I can remember.
Happy First Day of Summer! I believe it is the longest day of the year so go and enjoy!

Reply

I think that is a great idea, ignorance is bliss hahaha! It really is the best way to eat pizza. Oh that is a fun fact, I’ll tell Skye! Have a great day, Crissy!

Oh, today’s post made me laugh! I was a TALKER!!!!! Hahaha.
I went to private grade school in the 80s and I was constantly in trouble for talking.
Best example was when my Mom came to drop off treats at school and I was in the hallway with my desk, because I “couldn’t control my mouth” or something like that!!! Those were some rough years, but I am glad they didn’t break my chatty-happy spirit!

Reply

Hahah good thing we didn’t go to school together because we probably would have gotten in even more trouble together. Your mom probably understood right away why you were in the hall when she saw you. Let’s get in a run together and chat non-stop. Have a great day, Sarah!

Good morning! I was wondering what pack YOU wear? I am looking to invest in one for my fall 50K and would love to hear your thoughts! My black lab, Brewster, is 3 years old! 🐾

Reply

Hey Jamie! I LOVE mine and use it for trail running. Andrew has the same one and loves it too. https://shopstyle.it/l/bIl8u
SO excited for your 50k ahh! Keep me updated on it all. Brewster sounds like such a fun dog:)

Recently started reading the Address Book by Dierdre Mask – super interesting! We have a pup who is 2.5 and she would loooove Beretta! Though she’s much smaller (25lb mini golden doodle).

Happy to have converted someone to my pizza eating method!! Lol

We have two dogs – Jake is a Bernedoodle and 4.5 years old. Ollie is an Australian Shepherd/Newfoundland mix that is 1.5 years old. They are both giant mama’s boys and I wouldn’t have it any other way! :-)

Also, just learned that I will be visiting Utah in October!! So happy. A couple of my friends are doing the 70.3 IM World Championships in St. George and I’m tagging along! Can’t wait to try out some of the places you’ve mentioned.

Were you a talker in school or quiet or somewhere in between? Quiet in lecture type classes but a talker in labs.

Have a good book you are reading or recently read? Tell me! Just finished When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi, and the Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Both are amazing books.

Deuter Kikki for the hiking pack. 4 year olds can cover some crazy miles.

I was SILENT in school, but my son will NOT stop talking and gets shushed every day multiple times a day at school! lol
Biggest craving was a sausage egg mcmuffin!
Ohh, just finishing Beach Read by Emily Henry – highly recommend!
My pup is turning 2 in October!

I’m pregnant! (with twins!), I feel like fruit has been the biggest craving. All I wanted today was grapes and cherries. So that was my snack and lunch ha. I’ve also had cravings for sour candy–so I understand the gusher thing. I just can’t eat too much of it or it decides to come back up ;)

Our dog is 16! She’s a terrier mutt and doing great.

We have the REI Tarn 12 pack for our 4 & 6 yo, I think we ordered the bladder separately but it’s set up for one! Helps keep them hydrated because they love having their own bladder! And less complaining when they pick and carry their own snacks!
