Weekending + How to make running friends?

(shoes, shorts, goodr)

I met up with the group for their run but a few of us didn’t do the speed portion.  Lauren, Amy, and I kept running together once the other three peeled off for their workout.

12.49 miles @ 7:32 average with some good climbing in the first half of the run.  I don’t have a lot of details about the run besides that it was freezing cold, and the conversations were some of the best yet.

Saturday was filled with soccer games and kid things and then I went out with Andrew for a date.  I probably should have gone to plunj sooner after the marathon, but better late than never.

You start in the sauna followed by a quick shower and then you go directly to an ice bath.  You finish with resting in the chairs for a few minutes. You repeat this cycle as many times as you can in an hour, and you feel like a new human when you are finished.   We met some people there that go every single day.  One was a runner (he is on a 1400 day running streak) and after the sauna, he foam rolls and stretches for 20 minutes before getting in the ice bath.  He said this routine is what is keeping him running everyday injury-free.

We finished date night off by going to dinner with my sister and brother-in-law to Cubby’s.

And then getting a caramel apple and walking around the mall for a bit.

Beck and Skye are very happy that they have official insect homes now for their friends.

And we picked up Brooke last night after she had a weekend in California.  My sis-in-law has a sister that lives in California so sometimes she takes Brooke out while she visits her sister.  It worked out so nice!

I’ve had a few people ask me recently about how to find running friends.  Let’s jump into this topic, and don’t forget to check out the comments because everyone always shares the best ideas!

Before I start on this, I LOVED solo running for many years.  I think it just depends on the runner and life schedules, so if you love running alone, that is awesome too!  I’m sharing this for people that want to run with other people:

I might be completely wrong on this, but I feel it is safe to assume that 98% of adults want friends (I have no idea about the stat, but it feels right to me;).  I think many people crave connection, and what better way to check off social, mental, and physical needs all in one activity—> RUNNING.  Knowing that most people want a friendship helps me build up my confidence in creating running friendships and getting out of my comfort zone.

The #1 thing that made me faster as a runner was running with people.  There is just something about the energy of a group and how inspiring they all are… it is so much harder to quit or slow down if the people around you aren’t quitting.  Running with other people has inspired me to dream bigger!

My biggest fear before starting to run with people (other than my sister… I did that starting at age 12 and didn’t start running with other people more until I was 27) was that they would be bugged if I needed to stop for the restroom or to tie my shoe etc.  That fear was a waste of time because that has never actually happened.  Nobody ever cares if a quick stop needs to be made.  I could honestly care less about what pace I am running if I have the option to run with someone… that is my 1st choice now.  Many runners feel this way too, so don’t stress about slowing the other people down.  Get excited because they will either run your pace or help you pick up the pace a bit.  Having my friends to meet with helps me jump out of bed in the mornings.

Here are some ideas on how to make running/workout friends:

*GO TO YOUR LOCAL RUNNING STORE AND ASK!  The majority of people I run with are from the Runner’s Corner group.  They have group runs that they post about on IG and strava, and it’s easy to jump in on their runs.  Talking to other people at a running store could introduce you to new running friends.  Our friend, Jeff, plans all of our workouts now, making it so much easier!

*Make your real-life friends run WITH you.  There is nothing better than making the people you already care about addicted to your addiction.

*Talk to people at the beginning, middle, and end of your local races.  The odds are that they may live nearby, and if you are running similar paces at a race, you’ll probably do the same in training.  You could also volunteer at races, and I’m sure you’ll meet others who love to run.

*Once you make a few running friends, you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to network.  They will bring their other running friends to runs, and your list will grow over time!

*Talk with other people on running paths.  I did this when I was single, but I once asked a guy I had been running behind for a while (on a very busy/populated trail) if I could pace with him.  We ended up becoming friends and ran together a bunch!

*Search your Strava. Many of my friends have met many of their close running friends through Strava.  Comment on someone’s run in your similar area or someone that completes your favorite segments, and maybe eventually, you’ll meet up.  I would only meet up with someone I met online in a group setting, be careful!

*When I used to go to the gym more, I made friends there (I met my sis-in-law at the gym and then set her up with my brother).  If someone doesn’t have their headphones in their ears, I think they might be open to talking.  Be confident and talk to them, and you’ll be able to tell quickly if they aren’t interested in making friends.

*I know that park runs are a thing in big cities—> If anyone does those, please give us more details!

The biggest problem with running friends= We convince each other to buy expensive running gear.  Jo bought the beautiful vaporflys (I love her socks too), and she is already obsessed with them.  They make you fly.

I would love to hear about how anyone has met running friends!

What was the best part of your weekend?

Running gear/shoe/thing that a friend (in real life or over the internet) has influenced you to buy?

Would the 42 degree ice bath for 2.5 minutes or 193 degree sauna for 15 minutes be harder for you?  Have you ever tried something similar to plunj?

-The sauna is so much harder for me at plunj.

Love this post, running friends are the best! I met my first running friend years ago when I joined a running group to train for a specific race. After the race we both quit the group, but we kept running together. She introduced me to one of her friends, and we’ve been running together ever since. I agree with you the they motivate me to run better/faster/longer, and some of the most fun races we raced together.
But yes, thanks to one friend I am now the proud owner of an expensive Garmin Fenix :D

Best part of the weekend: just having fun with the kids + managing to get a YouTube-workout done with my two smallest kids next to me, imitation my moves. My husband is away for the week so I’m being creative about my workouts.
Have a great day!

I love that you two kept running together and that she added another friend to the group after the race. It really does make the biggest difference and I hope your friend made a commission from selling you on the Garmin ha. Way to get in that workout and you are such a good example for your littles. Good luck with solo parenting. Thanks Sanne, you too!

I don’t think I could handle the ice bath, but give me the sauna please!
I have a running group and most of the regulars found the group thru instagram and they came for their first run within days or weeks of just moving to the city! It’s so cool how it’s been a place for people to meet each other!

I hope you get some time in a sauna soon! Oh I love that the word was spread about the group through Instagram. I love that! Have a happy day, Loribeth!

I really love this post, Janae. It also has me excited because this summer my family is downsizing a bit from being a few miles from the center of town to a new home in the center of downtown Wellesley where I can just hop on to some trails right out the front door and even run to the local track. I learned there is a women’s running group that meets in the mornings at the track…so I plan to join once we are settled. One of my biggest fears is “being the slowest” or not understanding the workout. I never ran track- just cross country so as silly as this sounds- I constantly have to remind myself about what a 200-400-800m etc run actually means in terms of times around the track. I also totally lose track of home many loops I have made around the track so I will need to get better at that too. I am hoping the group of women will be welcoming:) and make me faster too! Ha.

Nadya, I am so so excited about your new home. I am going to make you send me a picture ha… the whole marathon I was dying over the beauty of the homes there. SO gorgeous and I love that you can get right to the trails and a track from your door. YAY for the women’s running group, that is so exciting. I totally understand that fear but I am sure those women will just take you in and make you feel at home! Can’t wait to hear about it! Have a great day, Nadya!

Yes! I’ve been through seasons of social running, goal-oriented running, and solo running over the years. After hearing a woman at work talk about a race, we decided to run together at lunch, then 3 other women joined in after seeing us out there! A local running group near me is affiliated with Road Runners Club of America (www.rrca.org to look up affiliated clubs). Chatting with other runners after race events can also lead to connections with regular running groups.
Best part of the weekend: 8-mile run (my longest in a while) in my Hoka Rincons (influenced by my Hoka Cliftons, which were influenced by a certain runner girl, LOL). It was about 20 degrees cooler than my run last weekend, and it showed in my heart rate and pace data. I also love my Roll Recovery R8 to keep my legs happy!

It really is all about what season you are in:) I love that you and your coworker started running together and that others joined too. So many great ways to connect. Hahaha I am so happy to hear that I influenced you into the Cliftons. GREAT job on your 8 miler and I’m glad the temps were so much better. Time to find my Roll Recovery R8… that thing is incredible. Have the best day, Corey!

I joined my first marathon clinic at a local running store . Some running friends became life friends.. Also organized orientation runs for trail races.

Best pat of weekend running in squ amish then lhe efood and beers after.

Happy Monday!!

I love that those friends have become life friends… nothing better! Sounds like a great weekend run. Thanks Kristine, you too!

Great ideas! I was also going to suggest Park Run to meet local runners. If you go to parkrun.org.uk and click on Events, it will take you to a map and you can find events near you (this goes for everywhere, not just the UK).

I have always run solo and felt O was way to slow to run with a group. You may have inspired me to be brave :)

Reply

THANK YOU for sharing that link… you are the best! Be brave, runners are the best. They just want to be running together and no one will care about your pace or if you need stops. YOU CAN DO IT… let me know how it goes:). Have a great day, Christine!

Best part of my weekend = running my first (official) half marathon in 6 years! The last time I ran one, I was a junior in high school & now I’m a year out of college haha. There’s been a lot of really hard things happening in my personal life and I hadn’t run more than 7 miles to “train” for this one, but I still ended up with a 3 min & 5 sec PR, which was so exciting :)

Following along with your training is always so helpful, and you’ve definitely sold me on some Brooks running shoes over the last few years!

Reply

Liz, congratulations! I AM SO SO HAPPY FOR YOU. You have gone through so much and look what you just accomplished. Congrats on the pr! Thank you for letting me be your friend and keep me updated on how you are doing. I hope everything is going better asap.

Hmmm… I think the ice bath would be the hardest for me. But what a cool place!
I found my running friends on FB almost 2 years ago. There was a group called Stop Soldier Suicide, that had organized a run 100 miles in the month of September to raise awareness and (if you wanted to do the fundraiser side) money about the high rate of suicide when soldiers return home. The 3 of us realized we lived in the same area, and set up one run together, and we just kept meeting every week. Now Christy bis one of my closest friends.
Which leads me to the best part of my weekend… I cheered on my friend who ran the OC half marathon. I met her at mile 10, knowing there was one last big hill just before mile 11, and ran her in to the finish line. I did step off the course before the finish line shoot. I didn’t want anyone to think I was banditing the race. But it was so fun, and it help Christy mentally in those last couple of miles. Running friends are the best ?
Have a good day Janae!

I hope you guys get one similar in your area, you would love it! Wow, I didn’t know that that is how you met your running friends. Really amazing. I’m so glad that you were able to cheer on and pace your friend at her half marathon. Being at races is always so inspiring! So glad you both had that experience. Thanks Wendy, you too!

This isn’t related to your questions, but Insect Lore has the cutest stuff. We have done the live Ladybug Land and Butterfly garden and my daughter loved them when she was little. Just make sure its the right time of year, otherwise you cannot release to them once they have been observed for a week or two. When I was in grad school she had a Ladybug one and the professor was doing a presentation and was shocked when a ladybug landed on her projector…In December. My friends and I were giggling in the corner as it obviously had hitchhiked on me to school LOL

I had never heard of insect lore until your comment and I just looked it up on IG, SO so cute! Skye will love this! Hahah oh that is too funny! Hope your day is a beautiful one and thanks for sharing.

I am so glad you made this post about running friends…I would LOVE to have a couple of running buddies, even if it was only a few times a month in person and encouragement over text!

The sauna would be 1000x harder for me!

Have you seen the new colossal cookies at Sam’s? Right now they have sugar cookies and a churro cookie. They look amazing, going to sample them tomorrow!

Happy Monday!

Running friends are truly the best! Seriously, being too hot is so miserable ha. I have not seen those but now I must get them. Thank you for influencing me ha. Happy Monday to you and keep me updated on how the running buddy recruitment goes!

Best part of my weekend: Hope won her 1/4 mile race she did. Girl can sprint like her Dad.
Not enough space in this comment box for all the things you influenced me to buy. ;)

Erica, I am SO happy about this. Tell Hope congrats for me! I cannot wait to see what that girl does in her life.

I am so sorry to your bank account haha. Happy Monday, friend!

We have the “Sauna House” here and I love going! It definitely helps with recovery and I feel so good afterwards! I can only handle the cold plunge for 90 seconds but I’m going to work my way up to 3 minutes!

Several years ago I made my co-worker run with me because she was always trying new fads to lose weight – now we are best friends, and she runs for fun and has stopped her silly weight obsession :) We do Saturday long runs and all our races together and it’s the best.

Have a great Monday!

Sauna House… I love that name! Keep me updated as you work up to 3 minutes (it is so hard)! I love what you did for your co-worker and how running brought you two together. You two sound like the best combo. Thanks Rachel, you too!

Good morning, Janae! Sounds like you had a perfect weekend – good for you! I have done a lot of solo running and, for the most part, have just stumbled across running friends/running partners when we incidentally discovered a shared interest. That said, there is a run/walk group at work that I am part of, but scheduling has prevented much in the way of actual participation. Hopefully, that will change :o) My local running store just moved to a new location and will be doing casual group runs on Saturday mornings, so may check them out. Great post about running friends!
YOU convinced me to shift from my beloved Saucony brand to Brooks, so thank you!!
By far, the sauna would be harder for me than the ice bath!! There are some similar places I know of, but they are an hour plus away, so haven’t tried them yet. That may be the next thing you influence me to do LOL!!
Have an awesome start to your week, Janae!

Reply

Thank you, Janine! I love that you are part of the group and I hope that the scheduling gets easier soon! You are so welcome for the influencing haha. I hope you get to try one soon. Thanks and I hope your day is a great one!

If you live in an area with “Moms on the Run” (very popular here in MN), that is how I have met my running friends! They definitely pulled me thorough the 15k we did not long ago – and now I am running Grandma’s half with them in June!

Best part of my weekend = DONUTS. I don’t know why, but it just made my life. Oh, and cleaning my fridge – because it is SO CLEAN now!

Have a great week, Janae!

Reply

I have never heard of ‘Moms on the Run’! That sounds awesome! You have to let me know how Grandma’s half goes. I am so happy you got donuts and enjoy that clean fridge (and thank you for motivating me to clean mine)! Thanks Kristen, you too!

I’ve been testing out the cold thing with freezing cold showers, the best I can last it 2 minutes so far, but the practice sounds interesting, I foam roll less than I should…at the same time encouraging those in my clinics to just do that!
friends, groups is what’s kept me running for almost 30 years now…the trick is to find the right group, but I like groups that have a good mix…at one time our running room store had Run Club every day of the week, some days there’d be one other person to run with, others, 25 (that was usually Monday evenings, especially the day after a huge race?)….some days you’re running with someone quicker, others someone slower, and if there’s enough in the group you can pretty much pick your pace, and no one runs alone…..and you become BFFs for almost 3 decades now

Reply

I really need to get on board with the cold showers. So cool that you are doing that. I love that you have been running for 30 years now! It sounds like you have such an amazing community of runners and you help so many people. ‘No one runs alone’… LOVE THAT. Have a great day, Warren!

The plunj sounds awesome!!! Sauna would be way harder for me. We have a wood burning sauna at our cabin and I don’t enjoy it very much. But it is fun to run to the sauna to the lake. I have been doing ice baths after my long run and it has been helping (I think!)

How fun to have all the soccer games! It looks like a workout just keeping up with all of them!

We had a great weekend. My running has been going great (knock on wood). The weather conditions have been awful–rain, wind and cold, but I got in 10 miles on Saturday and 19.5 on Sunday. We also had my daughters 1st Communion, which was so special. My aunt, sister and parents came for the day so my middle child felt quite loved.

I have been reading your blog, but no time to comment the past week–I am subbing for 3 year old preschool until the end of the school year and there are no breaks with those little one’s;-). Today I am at home with my youngest who has the stomach bug so I have a little more free time!

Have a fabulous Monday Janae!

Reply

You have a wood-burning. sauna at your cabin?! Ummm that is awesome! You’ve been doing this method for a while now! The games are harder than the run ha. I am so glad you had the best weekend and your training for Grandma’s is going so well. I love that you had that special time with your daughter this weekend. Sounds amazing. GOOD LUCK with the subbing. I cannot even imagine keeping up with those 3-year-olds. I hope that stomach bug doesn’t spread to everyone. Thanks Becky, you too!

Hi Janae! I love the community of runners including the ones I see on the comments here! It’s just such a positive and happy group. I totally agree with how chasing others makes you faster. My running club has a whole variety of runners at every group run from people who go to Boston every year to people who run walk. We stop for selfie breaks and people catch up it’s fun!

IF YOU LIVE IN NYC RUN WITH @centralparkrunning !!! Free social club and the best people I’ve met in the city :’)

Awesome. You have inspired me to run more often with my running friends. I have lots of them, but usually I just run from my front door and don’t make the effort to get together with them. And that hot/cold thing sounds super uncomfortable for the cold parts, but I can see how it would help you feel renewed!
