Tuesday Tangents!

(jacket, leggings, shoes, watch worn over my jacket sleeve because I had gloves on, and it is a pet peeve of mine to maneuver my sleeves to get to my watch while running).

9.13 miles with Emilee & 15 minutes of total body strength to start my week.  I have no method with my strength training right now besides trying to get something in 4-5 days a week.  I try to make sure I’m not doing lower body strength the day before a hard workout and usually try to do those workouts right after I finish a speed workout.  Some days my strength is 5 minutes, and some days it is 30 minutes.  The goal is to stay consistent, and even a 5-minute core class leaves me sore!

I’m going to jump on the bike today and attempt a 60-minute class (writing it here so that I don’t back out haha).

I have many tangents today…

*My brother has been experiencing a lot of feet pain, and I influenced him to try out Hokas.  I am excited to see what they do for him.

IMG 0302

*Every one of these stuffed animals must be present in Skye’s bed for her to fall asleep.  She calls roll each night.

IMG 4177

*I made this buffalo chicken to go on top of fries with blue cheese dressing (like my favorite Cubby’s fries), which was amazing.  We had roasted brussels and strawberries on the side to complete the meal.  I try to have a fruit and veggie at each meal!

IMG 4171

*This is how Beck sleeps every night, which is hilarious because Andrew sleeps the same way.  He sleeps on top of his hands/arms (but not with his knees up like Beck).  All of the boys in Andrew’s family sleep like this too!

IMG 4138

*We grabbed some hot chocolates & went on a drive in the mountains.

IMG 4159

*We also drove and parked up on a hill to watch the sunset a different night.

IMG 4203

*Brookie wanted to make a cake over the weekend, and she created this cake castle.  She also made dinner the same night for us… I might never have to cook again:).

IMG 4173

*I’ve complained on here a bit about how bad my cramps have been after having Beck.  Many people told me about mixhers and how it helped them out a ton with this problem.  I reached out to them, and they also offered me a discount code for any readers that want to try too—> JanaeB10.   I’ll share my thoughts over the next few months as I try them!

IMG 4169

*This post was written with the help of Beck;). Some days he wants to run away from me every moment he is awake, and some days he doesn’t want to leave my lap.  It is always a guessing game.

IMG 4235

*This question is from Kat—> “I was wondering if you or your readers have ever had any problems with this area of the foot?  It’s on the outside of my left foot, isolated to a spot about as big as a quarter.  I don’t even know what to call it to do any research!  It’s mostly when I stretch over something (like stretched over a bed with my feet on the floor), not really when I run.  Any feedback is appreciated!”

Do you have an air-fryer?  What is your favorite thing to make with yours?

An important question from us> Andrew washes new clothes before he wears them and I do not… What is the correct method, in your opinion?

Any running pet peeves?

Buffalo chicken over fries is going to be a meal for me next week. Sounds DELICIOUS! I will absolutely report back to you once I make it as well just to confirm it’s tasty.

I don’t wash new clothes when I buy them. Who has the time?! I barely want to do laundry with clothes I already own lol. Have a great Tuesday! Hope you crush that 60 minute bike ride

Reply

I cannot wait for you to try it… it is so so good. Haha that’s how I feel, I do not want to add to the laundry pile. Thanks Maureen, you too!

I do not have an air fryer. Running pet peeve? Cars that are not paying attention, guess it would be drivers who aren’t paying attention, and my husband has to have new clothes washed before wearing, me no, except underwear.

Reply

YES YES YES! That has to be my biggest running pet peeve and I swear it just gets worse with each year. I hope you have a beautiful day and valid point, underwear needs to be washed first. Thanks Nancy!

Reply

Funny enough- I used to be like you and never washed clothes before wearing them (I was just too excited!!) but my husband always washed his! Made me re-think it and now I always wash haha.

My pet peeve is just when there’s a group of people running or walking together and they take up the entire sidewalk or lane and I can’t get around them! And if you say “excuse me” and they get upset…that’s probably my #1 pet peeve. Also chafing. The worst!

Reply

Hahaha don’t make me re-think this issue;). I don’t want to do any more laundry. Oh my yes, that is a huge pet peeve of mine, it makes it so that I am extra aware when I am out walking to not do the same thing. I could do without chafing too haha. Hope your day is off to a great start, Gretchen!

I am imagining roll call a la SNL Will Ferrell and CherI Oteri.

I just wore Hokas for the first time yesterday and am now obsessed! I just feel like a Spice Girl wearing platform shoes.

Reply

BAHAHAH YES!!! Maybe she got it from that;). Hallelujah for your Hokas and they definitely feel a bit different but so ridiculously good. I hope your Tuesday is a fabulous one!

Um the watch has to be over the jacket!
I do not wash new clothes before wear.
The cake looks delicious! Brooke is quite the chef!

I ended up running long Saturday 15 miles on road and then ran on trails Sunday so I took Monday off running. Sleep is my best friend right now lol.

Have a great day Janae!

Glad I am not alone in the need for the watch to be over the jacket… it is a must. You crushed it this weekend, I am so glad you are giving your body the sleep and recovery that it needs. Thanks Kristine, you too!

Great job on the cake Brooke!
I have never washed new clothes before wearing them. But I always wash new sheets and towels. Interesting…
I love the idea of driving up the mountains or a hill, and watching the sunset. I may need to do that. Or even just driving down to the beach to watch the sunset. My evenings tend to get busy, so it’s something I have never thought of.
I’ve been getting in a good 4 – 5 days of strength too, plus my yoga class on Saturdays, and I think I can tell that it’s all helping with my running, but also just makes me feel so good. Physically and mentally.
Today, the food pantry that I volunteer at, is getting their big delivery. It’s usually 6 or more huge pallets of food to unpack and put away (cases of canned goods, cases of frozen meat, bags of rice, etc) so I’m counting that as my upper body strength for today, ha ha.
Have a good day Janae ?

Reply

That is interesting because I do the same with sheets and towels… I wonder why haha?! I think you need a beach sunset drive asap, that sounds dreamy. You seriously have inspired me to do more strength (now to just try pilates:). Thank you for that!Wow, you have a very busy day and that truly is a workout, good luck. Thanks Wendy, you too!

My 13 year old is in her first year of track/xc. Any good books you recommend on training for a young teen? Also any good low tech garmins or their equivalent? Thanks so much – I love your blog and all the amazing photos of your part of the country!

Reply

Elizabeth! That is so so exciting! You will have to let me know how things go for her. I just sent my niece (15), ‘Let Your Mind Run’ for the mental tips and tricks in there. I also think Strong would be great too (and it includes places for notes for them to make goals etc). I am ALL about Garmin so I think that if you just go with one of the cheaper ones you will still have an amazing experience because they produce great equipment. Please keep me updated on everything!

Thanks so much! I ordered both for her, and I migh read them too ?

I wash new clothes if I bought in a store and think other people tried on too. But if I bought online and they are really well packaged, I don’t!

Brooke’s cake looks amazing! Also I need to make buffalo chicken and fries- I have an air fryer and using for fries is ten million times better than the oven.

Reply

Oh that is an interesting point, I guess I rarely buy clothes in a store anymore but I probably would want to wash it if others were trying it on. Hmmmm now you have me thinking. Right? Air fryers produce the most amazing fries. Hope your day is off to a great start, Mariah!

Reply

We have an air fryer and mostly just use it for making fries and nuggets but I tried the Chicken Parm recipe from Delish.com last night and it was so good. This will definitely be in our rotation.

And I agree with Andrew that you should wash new clothes. My husband and daughter have sensitive skin so we have to do this otherwise they sometimes get rashes.

Reply

I drooled reading ‘Chicken Parm’ and now I have to find the recipe, thank you Corrinne! Valid point… on that helping with sensitive skin! Happy Tuesday, Corrinne!

Good morning, Janae! We have not one, but two air fryers – crazy! I will be getting rid of one of them soon; just trying to decide which one. The only thing I use it/them for is potatoes in one form or another. I am going to try tofu as part of the decision making process for which one gets a new home. Honestly, I find it just as easy to use the regular oven (or the toaster oven if I’m making a small batch of something).
I’m hit or miss with washing new clothes. I know it’s a good idea, but sometimes there just isn’t time before I need/want to wear the thing. On the other hand, sheets and towels always get washed first – weird! Towels I think because they leave “towel fuzz” on me if I don’t wash them first.
Running pet peeves – I share some of the ones already mentioned, but two big ones for me are if my socks slide down or bug me in some way (not as big an issue with better quality socks) and if my hair is in my face at. all. Makes me bonkers!
Have an awesome Tuesday, Janae!

Reply

Hey Janine! You will have to let me know how tofu does in the air fryer and they truly do make potatoes so delicious. We need to try out a toaster oven! YES to the sheets and towels always needing to be washed but I’m with you, sometimes I just want to wear the new item right away. Oh the sock slide and hair touching my face… I RELATE! Thanks Janine, you also!

I am going to have to try those fries! I was a hard sell on my air fryer but we love it now! Ours has rotisserie and makes the best chicken! But fries are probably right up there with favorite things! Also for super bowl sunday I made Loaded Potato Wedges in mine that were so amazing! Its a new Pampered Chef recipe releasing today.

Reply

Rotisserie?! Ummmm I am missing out on mine. That sounds amazing and I must try those loaded potato wedges, YUM! Hope your day is off to a fabulous start, Amy!

Hi Janae! I’ve had foot pain and swelling like that but it was on the inside of the foot. It was bursitis, so maybe look that up and see if that matches?
I wash my new clothes if it’s underwear or something touching the skin!
Have a great day!

Reply

Thank you for helping out Kat! Valid point on washing underwear first! Thanks friend, you too!

Reply

Thanks Amy! I will look into that!

Reply

The foot pain question! I have that same spot that doesn’t hurt but burns if I stretch that spot some how! So weird but makes me feel better I am not the only one HA!

Reply

You aren’t alone! You’ll have to let us know if you figure it out, I am so sorry! Hope your day is off to a wonderful start, Pam!

Reply

The image of the foot makes me think of a ganglion cyst I had a few years ago.

Reply

Yes! It burns if I flex my foot or do the hamstring stretch. John’s comment below seems to be the closest. I’m thinking more stretching is probably what going to be what helps.

Reply

Hi Katie,
I have the same issue I ended up at PT a few yeas back and one of the things they said can cause it is calf tightness.
Good luck!

Reply

Kat, fingers crossed that’s not a bone spur; I have one developing there. Sending you positive vibes! Stretch out the calf and work on ankle strength.

Reply

NOOOO to your bone spur, I am so so sorry about that Stacey!

Reply

We have an air fryer and my favorite thing to make (when I have time) is bagel balls from Skinny taste.

For Kat->look up Achilles tendinopathy. I have had a niggle/sensitivity in that spot and that’s what they tell me it was caused by. Lots of single leg work and calf raises, plus massaging my heel have helped ?.

Reply

Ummmm bagel balls?! How have I not had those in my life. I must try. Thank you for helping out Kat and I am glad that you were able to figure it out! Happy Tuesday, Paige!

Thanks Paige! I will check this out!

I don’ think I’ve made anything in my air fryer other than fries…though my husband has done wings. I’m curious if anyone has tried cooking salmon in it?

I always wash new clothes before I wear them – I can’t stand the feeling of a million other people having touched it, haha! But my husband does not.

Reply

I have always been a bit too nervous to try Salmon! But if you do, let me know. Hahah now you are making me rethink my methods;). Hope your day is a great one, Tess!

Reply

Chris washes, I do not, so I guess our vote is a wash (no pun intended, but hehe) as to who is right.

BAHAHAHA THANK YOU FOR THIS PUN… made my morning.

Definitely wondering about the period thing. I have more painful cramps and a migraine. Migraine is the main thing I’d like to address without hormonal birth control. It’s knocks me out for about a day or two every month (obviously still have to do “Mom” but lots of TV happens and it’s not great).

Reply

Veronica, I am so so sorry. Those migraines sound terrible. If you check out the reviews on the product there are a bunch of women that say it helps with their hormonal migraines. I am really hoping that it can help with my hormonal acne too. Have a great day and I’ll let you know if I notice it helps.

1. I am obsessed with my air fryer. Favorites are leftover pizza and cheese curds.
2. I wash everything before I wear it. But I LOVE doing laundry so I’m weird.
3. Trying not to get over by cars (drivers) who don’t look or are not paying attention to pedestrians.

Have a great day and enjoy your long spin!

Reply

Leftover pizza… how have I not tried this? Ummmm teach me your laundry ways, please. Yep yep yep… biggest pet peeve ever. Thank you Amy, I did it wahooo. Have a great Tuesday!

I work in the apparel industry in product development and there IS a right answer: you should wash your clothes before you wear them. You want to wash off anything that is lingering from the factory and any off-gasses from transportation. However, even though I know that we should all be washing our new clothes before we wear them, I am team Janae on this, and I can’t bring myself to wash them before wearing them.

I also have an air fryer and have been very into the frozen falafel from TJs; I put them in at 325F for 15min and they’re deliciously crunchy morsels!

Reply

Well, now you have me needing to change my method haha but let’s be honest, I’ll probably stick to my lazy route. Good to know though, Andrew will be happy to read. THANK YOU for the falafel idea, I will have to go get that today for my family. Happy Tuesday, Elizabeth!

Reply

ALWAYS wash clothes first!
Also how cute of Beck, my son sleeps almost exactly the same way! Maybe it’s a boy thing?

Reply

I’ve had my air-fryer for almost 2 years and use it every week! French fries are so much better that way and they always turn out. I’ve also made bacon and was surprised about how good it turned out, plus it was much easier to clean up. Avocado fries are another favorite.

I don’t usually wash my clothes before wearing. Sometimes I’ll get something from Amazon that has a slight smell from packaging, if that’s the case I will wash first.

Reply

I usually just put stuff on, but COVID makes me think twice about trying stuff on in a store…..I guess ordered on line might be okay, but do you know who tried that on last?……it’s like buying gloves, who tried them on last?
strength training is important, but yeah, it’s hard to find the time….when I don’t or don’t cross train, my quads get strong and stiff, which leads to a sore back and hamstrings……right now if I had to get down on one knee to propose , if I managed to do that, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to get back up…time to foam roll!

Good morning Janae.
I am with Elizabeth on washing clothes prior to wear to get rid of any nasty chemicals.

For Kat – that area could very well be some sort of peroneal tendonitis. Either from an injury, rolled ankle, etc.. or from something being out of balance in the running gait, foot, toes, etc.

Reply

Thank you! I will check this out!

Reply

I was just going to say the same thing! I had peroneal tendinitis a few years ago and it was in that spot on the outer foot. Rest and leg stability exercises helped me and when I feel it twinging now I do a little scraping in the area and that settles things. Good luck!

Reply

Janae, that millisecond where I thought you were saying Andrew sleeps with his booty up in the air was really the giggle I needed this afternoon… haha! Thank you! Too funny that all the boys in the fam sleep that way though.

I always thought you should wear clothes first before washing. Last week, I purchased a shirt from Target online and put it on the moment after I grabbed it from the mail. While I was out, I realized the terrible thing I was smelling was the shirt – it smelled like fertilizer, yuck! I have been converted to washing new items from now on:)

Hope you have a great rest of your week!!!

Reply

I never wash my clothes before I wear them. I like the crisp new clothes feeling. My husband always washes his before wearing which I think is weird…glad you agree!

Reply

That cake looks amazing! What an adventurous baker Brooke is!

Yes to washing new clothes-I feel like I need to wash off all the handling and/or being housed in stifling packaging! Socks, underwear, towels, sheets and running clothes for sure. I knew a kiddo who had a severe allergic reaction to a costume that was likely from the packaging. It’s so hard sometimes because clothes often arrive totally unwrinkled and washing takes away that new look, but I swear I can “feel” the need to wash them.

And for Kat, rule out bone spur or Achilles tendinopathy.

Beck’s sleeping pic is adorable.

I *love* the idea of buffalo chicken fries. I’ll need to surprise Tom with that one day–we have a similar crock pot buffalo chicken recipe we like, and I can see how he would love it over fries.

We used our air fryer yesteray, and we actually used it to make a buffalo chicken salad. I had found gluten free buffalo chicken bites in the grocery store’s freezer section, so I air fried those and cut them up (and added buffalo chicken sauce to my husband’s chicken). And I put them on top of a salad of cut up romaine, chopped celery, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, and blue cheese crumbles and dressed it with a mixture of buffalo sauce and my favorite ranch dressing. I know it’s not the same as going out for wings, but on days when Tom doesn’t want to spend money to go out or get take out and when I want to make sure we BOTH eat pretty healthy (I insist on salad more nights out of the week than I care to say, really…), this has at least enough of the flavors with some crunch from the cucumber, lettuce, and celery in the salad to tide him over at least a little bit longer. :)

I hope your brother likes the Hokas!

I love that Skye takes roll of her stuffed animals. Seems like all of them being together means that she has as lot of friends for a fun sleepover every single night. :)

Sleeping on your hands? Man–that’s weird. ;) Adorable, but…weird…like, what if your hands fall asleep from less blood circulation?!?

Weird!

Hope you’ve all had a good day!

I worked in retail for years, which made me want to always wash first. The boxes clothes come in to the stores are always dirty from the factories and delivery process. We also had stock people who would get cold while working, grab a sweatshirt off the sales floor to wear, and then put it back at the end of the night. Lesson learned – you never know where your clothes were before they come to your house. Wash before you wear!

And I love my ninja air fryer. I use it for everything from steak to fries to salmon. It’s so perfect and easy my husband even mentioned selling his beloved outdoor grill!

Reply

Sorry to make you think about adding more laundry ? but I definitely wash new clothes before wearing them. There are chemicals on clothes and I just feel better knowing I’ve maybe washed them off a bit. Going shopping for Hokas soon. What’s your favorite pair for everyday running?

Reply

Just wondering- what made you switch off of Brooks shoes? Seems like you suddenly aren’t using them anymore and have switched to Hokas and others.

Reply

I know i’m a day late here and not sure if anyone else has said this- but Kat’s foot pain looks like it could be where the achilles tendon attaches to the bone. So any achilles work- strengthening and stretching might help. But (and I’m sure she knows this0 if it gets any worse she should go to a sports medicine doctor for a true diagnosis!
