Hello! I feel like I can breathe again! We were so nervous on Sunday and Monday morning about Beck but it all worked out perfectly and I have never seen him happier than he has been after his surgery!
Things started at 4:50 a.m. to get up to SLC. My sister had the girls sleep over at her house and then my mom picked up Knox from his mom’s house in the morning… So grateful they were there to help with the other three kids so that Andrew and I could both be at the hospital.
Beck had no idea what was going on because we woke him up and we couldn’t feed him.
He was very aware of every little thing going on around him!
Lots of waiting until it was his time to go… Keeping him happy when he was hungry + not letting him crawl on the ground was quite the task!
Our hearts broke when the anesthesiologist took him away. Getting his tubes in took a bit longer than normal because the doctor said there was a lot of a very thick glue-like substance they had to get out but the surgery was successful.
Beck was very mad when he first woke up but calmed down once we started getting food in him. And from that point on he was so much happier. He was babbling like crazy (and whispering in the car which I have never heard him do but I think he was enjoying being able to hear himself whisper) and cried 99.9% less than he normally does. My mama heart feels complete again!

*Generalization time—> Why is it that boys can go months without running and then just pick up and run 6 miles?! Andrew is that person that would max out at 10 miles leading up to a marathon (he paid for that type of training on race day but he still was able to run the 26.2)!
*My brother gave this book to everyone in our family and wow. Just wow.
There are so many pages in here that stop me in my tracks! It’s helping me with parenting and my own life and it’s a book that actually includes tangible steps on how to better balance and let go of addictions that are holding you back. (PS the story in the first chapter is for mature audiences only!)
*Beck tries every maneuver possible to get me to stop doing my strength training…
*I love the way Skye looks at herself in the mirror.

When my kids had their tubes put in, both kids on the same day, I had to take them back to the OR and hold them down until they were asleep. That was pure torture! So glad Beck came out of it all so well and seems to already be hearing so much better. It was like that for mine too. Tubes fell out after about 9 months and haven’t had any more ear infections since.

Jen! I cannot even imagine having to be there holding them down until they were asleep. WHY did they make you do that? I am so glad the tubes worked so well for your two kids and I’m feeling so grateful for them. I hope your day is off to a great start!

I am so glad that Beck is doing so well! I can’t even imagine watching him taken away. My son has had lots of teeth removed under anesthesia and every time I made my husband be the one who stayed in the room with him (He inherited my small mouth, so not only the Mom in me couldn’t bare to watch him go under, but it was a little PTSD as well).
I do horrible under anesthesia. It takes me forever to come out of it. My mom is the same way. Little amounts of “uppers and downers” affect me so much. If I have any caffeine (whether in soda or chocolate) after 2 pm I can’t sleep (just Sunday night I was wide awake and couldn’t think of why and then I remembered where was chocolate syrup in my festive alcoholic drink like 6 hours before). But also Perocet and the like knock me out completely. With both my kids I was so out of it the first 4 days of their lives because of the drugs from my c-sections.
But I guess a lot of it has to do with how much anesthesia I get. I had to have a D&C after a miscarriage and I was begging the doctor not to give me too much because I didn’t want to stick around the hospital all day like I had had to do for previous surgeries, and then made sure they gave me just enough so I wouldn’t remember it and I was up and out of there so much more quickly.

Hey Jessey! Oh that is so so hard that your son has had to have lots of teeth removed… and the ptsd along with your mother heart breaking must be so so hard. That is so interesting how uppers/downers affect you. Andrew can literally drink caffeine right before bed, it is crazy to me. I am so sorry about your miscarriage and D&C… that must have been so so hard.

I have never been under anesthesia but my dad was an anesthetist! Because of that, he did not allow me to be put under anesthesia if there was any other way. Obviously for tubes or regular surgery, I would have been put under. However, wisdom teeth came out with Novocain and I had hand surgery with an arm block! I’ve been lucky with my kids – my youngest had to be sedated for an MRI after we adopted her but her surgery was in Hong Kong so I missed that! And my oldest still wears teflon armor, I swear!

Anesthesia for me is an experience I like to block out, LOL. But I had to hold my then 7-month-old daughter while she got her anesthesia, and I give it 0/10 stars, don’t recommend watching them go under. Fortunately, she was fine, as well.
That book sounds great & may be my next one!
I just found out that I get half a day off on Thursday (already a holiday on Friday). Wahoo!

Hey Corey, it really was so sweet realizing he was probably hearing himself whisper for the first time! YOU HAD TO HOLD YOUR 7 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER while she got her anesthesia, I cannot even imagine! Such good news the tubes are done!! When we watch videos of my son pre-tubes, he talks as if he had hearing loss (which apparently he did bc of the fluid). I cant believe you are already seeing improvements in the babbling. That plus the decrease/elimination of ear infections makes this surgery a win-win!! Hooray!

So glad Beck is a happier baby post surgery.
I just have a couple of days of work this week then off until January 4. So excited for the break. It will be a quiet Christmas because BC has a bunch of new covid restrictions but looking forward to some peace and quiet and adventures with River.
Jason bought the turkey yesterday and a bunch of goodies so looking forward to Xmas dinner.

I am SOOO happy Beck is already feeling better. It must have been such a relief for him to get that glue like gunk removed! My oldest had to be under anesthesia for a brain MRI when she was like 6 months old and it was heartbreaking, start to finish. She did really well though! Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

My daughter had anesthesia when she got strep throat when she was three, it was so bad there was a big infection in her throat and they thought they would have to do surgery. We couldn’t get her to sit still for a scan so they had to put her under. It was SO scary. But gosh, it’s such a relief to get their problems fixed! Beck whispering is just the sweetest thing, I’m so glad he got the tubes as soon as he did. <3
Tomorrow is my last day of work until the New Year…it's going to be a long break with the kids lol, but I'm very much looking forward to a work break.

Good morning Janae! Oh, I’m so glad Beck was able to get his tubes done. My heart hurt for you just seeing the picture of him being taken away :(
My work colleague is just like Andrew. He didn’t run for months because of an injury and BAM! just like that he’s back to running 6-10 miles at a time while I struggled the entire time to build slowly only to be thwarted by my own injuries. So not fair.
I’ve had general anesthesia multiple times for various surgeries/procedures. No issues. Topical anesthesia though…I need a lot. I once cried through a needle biopsy because I could feel the entire procedure. The doc said they usually use a couple CC’s of numbing agent…they used 2 1/2 syringes on me. And when I needed stitches a few years ago for a bad cut, the doc had to numb my finger 3 times before I couldn’t feel what he was doing. Though, I’m much like Jessey with the uppers/downers. I avoid caffeine after 10a and try to avoid taking Jenpills when I can.
Right now, my holiday break only includes some cleaning. But I am SOOO looking forward to just being home for a few days! Have a great day, Janae!

I have only had anesthesia once and it went fine, but I remember being completely shocked when they told me I had dressed myself to go home, because I had zero memory of doing it LOL!
I am doing my annual reading of Skipping Christmas by John Grisham. It’s the short novel that is the basis for the holiday movie Christmas with the Kranks. With the exception of his first books, I like his non-law oriented novels the best :o)
I work at a college, so have the good fortune of a shutdown between Christmas and New Year. It starts Thursday and I. CANNOT. WAIT. Have an awesome Tuesday and enjoy Beck’s newfound voice!!

Sooooo glad everything went well for Beck! And yay for the difference the tubes are already making. That was the same for our youngest when he had tubes at 2 1/2.
I have had anesthesia a couple of times, and both my boys (when they were younger) have too. Thankfully no issues for any of us.
We did a mini Christmas last night, before our niece goes home to Arizona for Christmas. It was so fun! She told us too, that she was accepted into the biology program she was hoping for, but it means she’ll be moving up to Monterey Bay at the end of January. We have loved having her live with us for these 7 + months! But this move is so good for her and her future.
That is sort of annoying that Andrew can just pick up and run 6 miles after not running for a while… Ha ha

I am bawling just looking at that picture of the anesthesiologist taking Beck away. ? I have a one year old who takes time to warm up to everyone and it’s tough taking her to new places. Add that you couldn’t feed him and have him crawl/run around. Ugh i feel for you but thrilled he is feeling much better and even babbling.
I’ve had a couple of surgeries and get so nauseous from the anesthesia.
Wish I had a break. I used up all my leave this year as I wanted to stay home with my daughter for as long as I could so have to work through the holiday.

Thank you for that book recommendation! It ties in with my resolve for 2022. I’m not going to buy anything new nor go out to eat ( unless someone is treating me). I’m also scaling back what I can see on my phone – deleted everything but HRG and Goodreads.
I’m teaching myself less is better and my measure is that I’m going to snap a picture of my bank balance on 1-1-22 and it needs to be the same or more on 12-31-22.
I am absolutely medicating myself with buying new things and shut down my anxieties by scrolling social media to numb myself.
This book rec was meant to be for me today! It’s going to be a very interesting and productive year for me indeed!

I’m so happy beck has had his tubes! It will change your (and his) life! When my boy got his tonsils out it changed ours in a huge way. He suddenly started sleeping through, like seriously instantly and it’s never been a problem since (2years now). It’s amazing. So sweet that he was whispering to himself. That’s too precious!
I must buy that book. It sounds amazing. Another awesome one is ‘notes on a nervous planet’ by Matt Haig. It talks about similar things.

I’m so glad Beck is doing better after his surgery! My 4 year old had open heart surgery in March to fix a hole in his heart, and I can remember that feeling of him being wheeled away so specifically. It is so hard to entrust care to another person, but the end result is, hopefully, worth it. It sounds like Beck’s hearing has improved, and he’s on to happier, more comfortable times.

Aw, I’m so glad the procedure went well for Beck, that is so nerve wracking. I wonder how it is for Andrew with his medical background – does he feel more calm knowing how well trained the doctors are? Or is it worse having seen all the good and bad directly? Praying for a speedy recovery for Beck and love what you said about his whispers, so cool.

It’s not fair how quickly guys get back in shape! Of course Andrew seems to be active all the time and biking is great cross training for running so that probably helps a lot

I’m so glad Beck is feeling better! My daughter (born with hip dysplasia) had surgery at only 3 months of age, and watching the anesthesiologist carry her away is forever burned into my brain – just gut-wrenching when they are so small!! But, the beauty of it is that she now has perfect hips with zero recollection of what she went through :).

The “strong moms” quote strikes me as icky-mom-shaming. I know that’s 100% not your intention, so I just wanted to gently point out that categorizing moms/people will almost always lead to some unwanted comparison. A good test is to turn it around backwards and see what it sounds like. To me, this one says “if you are intimated by other moms, then you must not be putting enough time into raising your children.”
