Friday Favorites + Just the BEST Sight to See.

(Vest, long-sleeve, headband, leggings, socks)

Good morning and happy last day of 2021!  I am ready for the new year because I am hoping it will bring all of the health for my kiddos.   Oh, and more sleep.  That sounds glorious.

This was just the best sight to see.  She wasn’t up and playing for long, but when she was, it was so so wonderful.

Somehow Brooke woke up with pink eye, so we expect that to go around the whole family next.

I caught these two snuggling for the 3 seconds that Beck stayed still.

IMG 0497

I got out for a run at noon, and it was so peaceful out.  Working out early is a foreign language to me these days.

IMG 0552

Andrew did an HOUR CLASS on the Peloton… I still haven’t worked up the courage to do that yet.  He is doing the Build Your Power Zone program, and it is giving him a run for his money.

My mom brought over a chicken pot pie from Costco, and it hit the spot.  Beck wanted his foot in the picture.

Let’s talk about some of my favorite things this week!

*I’ve been into Athleta more lately, and when I saw their Henley tops, I grabbed one.  The material is thicker than I expected, softer than I expected, and I love the thumb holes—definitely a win.

IMG 9846

*The guided interval runs on the Peloton app.  Thank you to the people that recommended I try these because they are amazing.  As I am returning to speed training again, I’ve needed something to get me moving again.  Becs told me precisely what to do, what effort level I needed to do it at, played great music, and shared many awesome motivational tips over the thirty minutes.  It was just what I needed to rip the bandaid off.  My goal is to do one of these a week for January!

IMG 0290

*This may have been the best podcast episode I have ever listened to.  Tommy Rivs’s story is incredible, and I gained so many valuable lessons from what he shared.

*One of my friends was struggling with plantar for MONTHS (at the same time I was), and the Hoka Clifton 8s made the biggest difference for her too with her injury.  I have my full list of things that I did for my plantar here, but there is just something magical about these shoes.

Ever do any guided runs?

-So far, I am a huge fan of the Deena Kastor gratitude ones on the Runkeeper App and the Peloton ones!

The best podcast you have listened to recently?

What are your plans tonight?  Have a run planned for tomorrow morning?

-I used to run the year with my friends on New Year’s Day (i.e. 13 miles for 2013 etc.), but that tradition ended a few years ago because the mileage was getting too high ha.

What are you hoping for in 2022?

Happy Holidays! Best podcast I’ve listened to recently was To Live and Die in LA. I also enjoyed Defiance hosted by Michael Johnson and My Body My Life hosted by Elizabeth Banks.

Thank you for sharing! I’ll have to check them out! Have a beautiful day, Christina!

Heh you could start running the year in km! Though that will still be a lot in another 10+ years.

I’m staying in with Jason tonight, he’s making squid ink pasta for us! Then I’ll go to bed at 8 and wake up early to ride my bike on Saturday.

Reply

That is brilliant! Maybe next year I will start that tradition. Squid ink pasta… time to google that. Are you riding indoors or outdoors… we woke up to about a foot of snow right now so I will be extremely jealous if you say outdoors! Hope you have a great time!

Reply

We found squid in pasta while on vacation this summer. We call it emo pasta because it’s so dark. After my son took a bite, he commented that Squidward is delicious. Happy new year!

Glad Skye is on the mend…hopefully pink eye doesn’t spread through your house, you guys can’t seem to catch a break lately.
Tonight we are ordering food in and playing a few games…hoping to make it up until 9pm haha.
Do you have a link for your necklace (top one) shown with the green shirt?

Happy New Years Eve!

Reply

Thanks Ashlea! Really hoping it doesn’t spread around too. Oh, that sounds like a great night! I can’t find the exact same set anymore of the necklace but this one is very very similar and from the same place!

Im glad you found becs! She doesn’t teach spin but if you if you can take her for something else I know you’d adore Jess Sims. Happy New Year to all of you

Reply

We need to start a petition to have Becs teach spin too. I’ll try Jess Sims asap, I cannot wait. Thanks Sara and I hope your day is a beautiful one!

Oh, I’m sooooo glad you guys have gotten into PowerZones and running with Becs!! I think I’ve recommended both. ? There is a PowerZone Pack challenge starting next week too if Andrew is on the Facebook group. Welcome to the cult within the Peloton cult. :-)

My workout today is getting the last few holiday classes on the Peloton app; I have three New Year’s Eve rides to do today (I’m doing all the holiday classes from 2021 and 2020). It’s been fun but I wish I’d thought of it on December 1st rather than December 7th! I’ve done 72 in the last 3 weeks which has felt kind of crazy but it’s also been good to have a goal for just me during the holidays with everything else going on.

Happy New Year—I hope Skye is feeling better soon!! Sometime this weekend go take Becs’ 45 minute Women’s History run from 3/8/21. It is SO good. So so so good.

Reply

You absolutely did… I’m just not sure about PowerZones yet for me because of what Andrew says about it being so hard ha. I’ll tell Andrew! Seriously, we have fallen hard into the cult which is funny because I did not understand it until I had a Peloton! HOLY COW! You are on fire this month! Oh my goodness, I haven’t even seen that run, I’ll take it today (if I can get myself out the door ha). Have a great weekend Rachael!

I’d love to purchase that toy train/car tower for my kiddos in the first photo with Skye. Do you happen to have the name of it or link for it?

Reply

Hey Amy! Yes yes yes… we bought it for Beck for Christmas and it turns out all four of them love playing with it ha… Here is the link: https://shopstyle.it/l/bCoWO

I hope you have a great day!

Hi Janae- Have you completely switched running shoes from Brooks to Hokas?

Reply

Hey Mary! I haven’t worn Brooks in a while now because my foot feels so so good in Hokas, I’m nervous to mess up a good thing! I still think the world of Brooks but for this chapter of my life, my body feels best in Brooks! Hope your day is a beautiful one!

Reply

Happy new year, Janae! Thank you so much for all of your posts. I have not commented in a very long time. I retired from my job so I’m not at the computer with a keyboard. It’s just not as easy to comment from my tablet! Ha. I still read your blog everyday and I really appreciate your work. I will hope for much health for you and your family in 2022! I will happily be in bed at 815 tonight!

Reply

AMANDA!! I was just thinking about you the other day! Congratulations on your retirement! That is amazing. I totally understand how much harder it is to comment on a tablet. YAY for 8:15 bedtimes haha. Thank you for your friendship, it means a lot! Happy New Year to you!

Just curious did Skye and Brooke get Covid PCR tests? Pink eye was the first sign that my 6 year old friend’s daughter had for Covid. She had mild symptoms they thought were allergies prior to it and then got pink eye (she is fully vaccinated). Then she shared that special gift with the rest of her family but all the kids just had yucky looking eyes.
I did the Deanna Kastor guided run and I just don’t think it’s for me, I like my podcasts! As for tonight, given the state of things we are staying home. We usually have friends over but we all just want to stick at home and make it back to work and school healthy next week! Planning on a dinner and dessert board for the family. I don’t plan on staying up, am sure my oldest has other plans.

Reply

Hey Carrie! Yep, I had them both do it at the doctor’s office again! They have become pros at the swab up their nose after Andrew has been working directly with Covid for almost two years now. This last swab hurt Skye sadly:(. I hope you guys have the absolute best time at home tonight and good luck getting everyone back to school/work healthy… we need some of that over here too haha. Have a great day!

Reply

Pink eye?!!? Oh no! Hopefully it doesn’t go through the whole family. And yay for Skye feeling better!
I am loving the Peloton run instructors! I did a 45 minute progression run with Becs and it was awesome! It was tough, but I love how you don’t have to think. I’ve also done a run with Rebecca Kennedy which was good too. I am loving the strength and core workouts so far too.
I keep hearing so many great things about Hokas. I’m glad they are working for you. I am still absolutely loving my Altras.
We had a week of rain, which was so nice, and now beautiful clear, chilly, sky. Which of course happens… It is always picture perfect on New Years day here for the Rose Bowl parade and game… Ha ha.
Have a really great New Years Eve! And here’s hoping for all the best in 2022!!

Thank you so much Wendy! What is your Peloton name? I want to be friends on there! Oh I will have to try that run with Becs, she really does so so good with guiding the runs. I’ll try out Rebecca too. I am SO glad you will have great weather for the parade… I used to always go to that when I was growing up with family. Thanks Wendy and enjoy your party tonight too!

I’m RunningReidMom (Fullerton, CA) on Peloton. I’m still trying to figure out how everything works, so I am following you too :)

Here’s to healthy kids soon! I’ve been eyeing the Henley from Athleta ( love everything from there ) Do u mind me asking what size u got? I’m never quite sure w their tops.

Reply

Thank you so so much! Seriously, Athleta is just on fire with everything they have right now. I bought it in a small and it fits perfect and so comfortable. I hope your day is off to a great start, Molly!

Happy New Year’s Eve!! Glad Skype is starting to feel better, hope pink eye is long too bad for Brooke!

Favorite podcast episodes this year were Drew Barrymore on The Armchair Expert and Reese Witherspoon on We are supported by.

We decided against the late races tonight and signed up for a hot cocoa run in the morning with my nieces! So tonight will probably be chill at home watching the celebrations on tv and getting some sleep.

Reply

Thanks Mariah! Oh I LOVED both of those episodes SO much. Have the best time at the hot cocoa run (that is what I would choose too). Enjoy your evening!!

Happy New Year, Janae! Really glad to have your blog to read this year through the ups and downs we’ve all faced. Best wishes to you and your fam in 2022 :)

Your comment just brought me the biggest smile. Thank you, Betsy! I hope you and your littles have the best day (and that your HOA gets back to you soon?)

I need to check out that podcast on Tommy Rivs. He’s my favorite trainer on iFit. I just finished doing his 6 week program on my treadmill to get back into running.

Wishing a happy, healthy new year to you and your family!

Reply

How did I not know he was a trainer on iFit? That is so awesome and way to go rocking that 6 week program! Thank you friend, the same to you!

Reply

Yes the peloton outdoor runs are so awesome! If you are in the market for a new treadmill…. you would LOVE the peloton tread ;) Just like the bike.

Reply

I keep debating whether or not to get one?!? You are convincing me….

Hope your day is a wonderful one, Katrina!

Happy new year’s eve! I am seeing a show (music) tonight.
I’m still not running due to my foot. I ended up also getting a heel spur. I like the Hoka enough for walking around but they won’t be for running for me (at least not the Cliftons). I just ordered a Ergatta! (I hope it doesn’t aggravate my foot! But I’m walking a lot better).
Poor Brooke and you. Another wish that the pink eye doesn’t spread. Especially to the little ones. I hope you have a healthy new year!
Really enjoy your blog (and Sissy’s remodels)!

Somehow I missed that podcast, but I’ll definitely listen to it now. I just listened to the latest episode of Strength Running, where Connor Meakin tells the story of how he ruptured his plantar fascia. He had a hole in it the size of a nickel and was told he would never run again. It took him three years to rehab it but he is now back to running- Great episode!

Hello! First time commenter here but I love your posts and family!

I’ve got two little guys- 4 and 6. I’m wondering about a Costco membership and best things to buy that are kid friendly. Any tips?

Reply

Hey Nicole! Mind if I do a post about this next week???? I hope you had the best time with your little guys this weekend!

Two things: you should definitely try Power Zone classes, and especially Matt Wilpers. He’s a running coach too and PZ workouts and his classes remind me of the structured training programs I’ve done with running and rowing. The other classes seem so random after getting hooked on PZ. As a competitive runner, you would love it. And second: how do you run in the snow and ice?? We had a freakishly cold spell over the past week in Seattle with snow and ice, and it freaked me out too much to run on it. I didn’t want to fall on slick concrete.

Reply

I read that you went for a run at noon and I immediately thought about how I’d spend the whole run peeing myself… and I’ve only had one kid! I can only run first thing in the morning without any liquids or else I’m in trouble.

I’m a longtime reader and I don’t think you’ve written before about the pelvic floor after having your babies, or maybe I missed it? It’s quite personal so I would totally understand if you aren’t comfortable or just haven’t had issues. Everyone says “see a PT” and I am doing PT with a specialist but it feels like it’s going to take me a full year to see any real improvement during running and progress is sooooo very slow. My son was nearly 10 lbs, had an enormous head and was crowning for a full hour, so maybe that has something to do with my personal circumstances. I did it without any pain medication so it couldn’t have been that bad, LOL.

Reply

Hey Sarah! Would you mind if I asked your question in a post on wednesday? Then maybe you can hear from others that have had this problem! I’m not sure how or why I haven’t had any problems with this but I know the majority of women have. You are amazing and 10 lb baby with zero pain medication, HOW!?!?? Let me know what you think about asking it in a post!

Reply

That would be great! Thank you :)

It’s imperative that I listen to the podcast on Tommy Rivs. He is my go-to instructor on the iFit platform. As part of my preparation to resume jogging, I have just completed following his 6-week program on my treadmill.
