Not Giving Up + Friday Favorites!

HAPPY FRIDAY!

I’ve reached one of my parenting goals:  My kids can make me breakfast, and I greatly appreciated this smiley plate of sugar;)

IMG 4382

I’m turning into a ‘workout during Beck’s morning nap’ person.  After years of early morning workouts, this is a fun change.  I set a new best output record for a 30-minute class which I was pretty excited about, and then I did a 30-minute strength workout.

It’s confusing to me too that I now spend the same amount of time strength training as I do on cardio these days…

IMG 4385

Yep.

IMG 4391

Basically a toddler.

IMG 4511

I’m recommitting.  I feel like the last week, I kind of gave up on getting my foot figured out other than just resting from running.  Between traveling and being tired of doing all of the plantar things because they weren’t healing me overnight, I stopped doing many of the extras.  There is something in my gut telling me I just need to get my calf sooooooo loose, so here we are again.

Let’s talk about some favorite things this week!

*I wanted some faux leather leggings and they were a fantastic purchase.  They come in petite and tall (I got tall), and they are so fun to dress up and dress down.  They are beyond comfortable, which I wasn’t expecting!

IMG 4462

*Olaplex 3… I just picked up a new bottle because I was getting low on my previous bottle and refuse to go through the work of washing my hair without using this first on my damp hair.  It smoothes my hair so much and takes out all of the frizz.  I’ve converted a lot of my friends to it, and they always thank me after they try it.

IMG 4393

*Last time I tell you to try these joggers…  If you have gotten them already, please tell me in the comments how thankful you are for the creators of them.

IMG 4117

*I started wearing blush which is a big change for me.  Jessie and I went to Sephora in NYC, and I bought a blush/bronzer combo that she has loved for years.  I’ve been wearing it every day since, and it’s really fun. I know absolutely nothing about make-up, but this stuff goes on well and adds a subtle little pop of color.

IMG 4101

*Chic-fil-a chicken noodle soup.  It’s delicious.

*I’ve decided that I need to find the world’s best protein drink.  I feel like I don’t have time to do anything but grab a drink out of the fridge right after a workout.  I can make something to eat a bit after my workout, but it’s nice to get in some protein within two minutes of finishing with a drink.  This one is from Costco, and it’s pretty good, but I’m still searching, so let me know if you love one.

IMG 4389

——————————————————————————————————–

Do you wear blush?  Where do you buy your makeup?

Protein drink or protein bar that you love to eat right when you finish a workout?

Over the years of your working out life—>  Have you stuck to working out at the same time over the years or does it switch around?

Tell me one thing you are looking forward to this weekend!

I have started drinking slate chocolate milk after a workout and really love it. It’s lactose free, which I need, 20g of protein and no added sugars! It also has some electrolytes in it too. Have a great weekend, and roll roll roll out your calf!

Reply

Oh that sounds awesome… I love that it has electrolytes in it too! I’ll have to try it. Thank you, I seriously need the encouragement so much. Hope you are having a beautiful day, Tisha!

Hey Janae~
Happy Friday! I do wear makeup/blush! I buy most of mine at Sephora or Nordstrom. I saw that the set you bought is from Nars—you can’t go wrong with Nars. I’ve recently really started loving Charlotte Tilbury and Patrick Ta, too, but I wear all kinds of brands—fancy and drug store. I just love artistry, and I think of wearing makeup as artistry—enhancing what you already have, not “changing” yourself :)

I’ve been drinking the Fairlife “ultra” drinks—they have 42 grams of protein. They taste pretty good but not life-changing. I just don’t have the patience or time to make smoothies, so this is so much easier. Over the past 6-7 months, I’ve focused pretty equally on running and strength work, and I’ve upped the protein to go with the extra strength.

Oh man, I’ve definitely switched up my workouts. In college/soon after, I did a lot of walking. Then, I did workout tapes at home and Zumba classes (which makes me laugh NOW bc I am not a Zumba-er, at all), and then I got into running, and THEN I added the strength. One class I do NOT enjoy is HIIT classes. I love to run, but I absolutely hate Burpees and random jumping around. And, after having kids, do not ask me to jump rope. Ever. ha ha

One thing I’m looking forward to this weekend? My first thought is sleeping in!!!! THat might be my fav thing about every weekend right now! lol But, my niece’s baby shower is tomorrow, and that will be really special, too :)

Hope you guys have a super weekend!!!!

The Just Ingredients protein powder is the BEST! Tastes amazing and it’s all totally clean, whole food ingredients. Best one I’ve ever tasted.

Reply

I just started following her on Insta a month or so ago! I bought ashwagandha from her! I’d love to try the protein powder, too!!! :)

Reply

YES! Another vote for the Just Ingredients protein powder! Mixes great with just water so it is super easy and my go to every day.

Reply

That stuff looks amazing!! Do you guys buy it online or at Costco or anything? THANKS for the help!

Reply

I think you can only buy it on her website (https://justingredients.us/shop/all-products/) or at places in her town (somewhere in Utah – so maybe she’s close to you!). And, just a side note – all of her products and her Instagram account are amazing! I’ve learned SO much. She has a whole foods/clean hot chocolate that launched today too!! HIGHLY recommend her and her products!

Reply

HEY JEN! I have always noticed you have the prettiest makeup, you need to come teach me your magic. I’m with you on smoothies right now, I just don’t get to it until it’s way too long after a workout. Look at us rocking the strength over the last few months. Oh burpees… yep, I have officially retired from those! Hahaha I relate to you not wanting to jump around all over the place. I hope you get to sleep in extra this weekend… you work so hard and early as a teacher all week, you deserve it. Enjoy your niece’s baby shower too. Thanks and you too!

Reply

Lol Janae. Maybe when you get older like me you’ll start doing burpees and jumping rope again after you realize you forgot how to do it! It feels so awkward after not doing functional movement like that for years and years.

I am actually enjoying box jumps and burpees now after adding them to my exercise routine. (From that “Running Rewired” book by Jay Dicharry I posted before. Not only does it cover workouts for running, but it explains a lot of running mechanics in detail).

Chick-fil-A soup is the bomb. I never thought I would try anything but a traditional sandwich from there but my daughter got me to get soup one night for dinner. Soooooooo gooooood!

Reply

RIGHT?! I kept thinking there is no way this is actually from chick-fil-a. I might need some more today! I hope your day is a beautiful one!

Reply

I love a good routine, but at the same time, I find that I enjoy when my routine gets shaken up, because I usually find something else I like!

Very tempted by faux leather leggings. I’m just not sure I’m stylish enough to pull them off!

I hope your foot and calf start feeling all better soon! I think that’s really normal when you’re rehabbing an injury to take some time off from all the work. It’s kind of draining to be thinking about it constantly. You got this!!

Reply

I’m finding that too, I’m kind of enjoying just switching things around for a bit but I’ll also happily return to my early morning runs ha. I FELT THE SAME WAY and then I bought them and felt so hip ha… You can totally pull them off. Thank you for the encouragement and understanding. You are the best, Kristin!

If you want a premade protein shake I really enjoy the Orgain brand and I buy them at Costco. But typically I just pour some milk into a shaker bottle and add PE Science vegan protein to it (not vegan but I just enough vegan protein powder). They have super good flavors and my most recent bag was the chocolate one so it tastes like chocolate milk but more protein and less sugar.

The one thing I’m doing this weekend is going to a haunted house which I’m not looking forward to but I’m a good friend and no one else would go with her. So please send me good vibes for tomorrow night!

Have a great Friday :)

Reply

I’ve seen that one at Costco, I’ll have to try it along with that PE Science vegan protein! SENDING ALL OF THE GOOD VIBES! You are way more brave than I am haha. Thanks Maureen, you too!

I always worked out first thing in the morning and hated doing it any other time, but for awhile I did the naptime workout on the weekends and started to enjoy not rushing into it. Waiting until naptime was kind of a necessity with 4 kids under 5 – they were really a two person job for awhile! Now that my twins dropped their morning nap and can play a little more independently, I’m back to my first thing in the morning, but will sometimes go later if I’m working from home during the week. I’m really hoping incorporating Peloton strength classes regularly will transition to making me a stronger runner – hope the same for you, too! And I’m following the comments for that protein drink. I’m terrible at getting something in right after a workout!

Reply

4 kinds under 5… HOW DID YOU SURVIVE?! You are amazing. I’m kind of loving the less rushed feeling too when I workout during naptime too. Oh you will have to let me know how your strength training helps your running. Are you doing the strength classes for runners or the normal ones? I’m excited for us, we will be so so strong and get in all of the protein once we finish up our workouts. Happy weekend, Mollie!

Beck is basically a toddler! I can’t believe his 1st birthday is almost here already. This year flew by.
This weekend is going to be fun. Tonight is senior night at the football game. The senior football players are honored before the game, then at halftime, they honor the senior band kids. We get to walk out on the field with our son. It’s a fun tradition. Then Sunday we’re having the whole family over to celebrate all of the October birthdays. I have a lot to do to get ready, but it’s going to be a fun few days.
I need to get some more joggers. I have one pair that I love, but I need a couple more.
Have a great Friday!

Reply

RIGHT?! Fastest year of my entire life. I am so excited about your weekend. Your son is amazing and I love that you get to do that with him at the game tonight. Enjoy every second. And have the best time celebrating everyone on Sunday. Good luck getting everything ready, you are amazing and so kind to do this for others. I think everyone needs a few joggers in their life. Thanks Wendy, you too!

Hi Janae,

I had plantar going on 6 months when I was at a doctor appointment for my son who was having a foot issue (not plantar) and he recommended this foot stretch (1st page). I did it before I even stepped up out of bed in the morning, and any other time I was laying down, so at night before bed. Stretching your toes back and rubbing that tendon actually feels good and within 2 weeks my plantar was drastically better and by 3 weeks non-existent. Now if I get any twinge at all in my foot I’m doing that stretch before I get out of bed in the morning. I honestly didn’t have high hopes since I had tried so many things but this one really did the trick for me. Good luck!

THANK YOU for sending these stretches, I saw your comment before getting out of bed and did them and they helped so much for those first morning steps, thank you so much. I’m going to stick to doing them each morning or after I’ve sat for a while. Melissa, I hope you have a great day!

Hi Janae! Your blog posts are always such a positive, bright spot even though I don’t often have time to comment these days :o)
I wear little makeup; even less now since COVID (haha) and always just buy it at Target or Walmart. Under eye concealer is a MUST and it pretty much needs superpower capabilities for mine these days LOL!
I was recently introduced to a vegan protein recovery powder that Beach Body has. Not a promoting Beach Body at all, but I was having a tough time finding a vegan one that I liked. It only comes in chocolate which I don’t love, but it’s ok. I did try the non-vegan one which is orange and that one tasted great! Oh well.
My workout schedule has been all. over. the. place. in my life from crack of dawn, to midday, to evening. Whatever works and life causes that to change for sure.
I have to teach part of te weekend, but my sister just arrived from AZ for a visit, so that definitely takes the sting out!! Have a beautiful weekend!!

Reply

Janine! Seriously, that means a lot. Thank you so much. I need to find some really good under eye concealer hahaha mine needs superpower capabilities too. I hope you are able to find a protein drink that you absolutely love someday soon. You have been so busy, I bet it is hard to find the best time to get the workout in but you are doing it and rocking it. Have such a great time with your sister… sisters are the best. Thank you, you too!

Looks like a recipe for creating success (at some point) with your plantar! Continued acts of self-guided care to loosen up. Great job recommitting!!! You’re role modeling for the kids and others. Yeah, yeah.

So excited you’re concentrating on protein 2 mins post-workout!!! You’re at home after all, it’s sooooo doable!!! Really looking forward to what you land on long-term for the protein – what will really feed you. Without scrolling back up, I think you’re focusing on a drink. What about one of your burritos?

Not only is your blush an awesome color, it’s a great memento from your trip! Heart it. Good job, Jessie!

Beck is looking so big there. His shoes look huge, too! Such a cutie.

Reply

The burritos are perfect a bit after my workout but usually it’s straight to getting kids to school or getting Beck situated and it’s easiest to have a drink first. Thanks so much Lee, have a great day!

I just started using Seint makeup. I’m not a big makeup person and love that Seint is a cream-based formula that looks so natural! Search for it on facebook and you’ll see all kinds of application ideas. I put it on with my fingertips and let it melt into my skin while doing my hair. Then I go back and blend it with one of their brushes. Super easy! I don’t want to talk about mixing up workouts because today my gym closes. Ugh. I only go 2 -3 times a week for strength training but have made so many friends. When I need an after workout drink, I drink milk. My husband is a dietitian and that is what he told me to do. We were supposed to be traveling this weekend but had a change in plans so I look forward to hanging and getting things done that I didn’t expect to get done.

Reply

Hey Jackie! Melt into your skin?! Ummmm that sounds amazing! Your gym is closing? Oh that is heartbreaking. Why is it closing? Good to know that milk alone is the perfect post-workout drink too. Good luck getting all of the things done. Thanks Jackie!

Reply

Well, it hasn’t been making money for awhile and it has gotten really hard for the owner to find instructors. It is a team workout gym – crossfit like training some days, HIIT days, kickboxing days. So if there are no coaches, there are no classes, so people stop coming. I just really want to do strength training 3xs/week since I run a little too. And not on my own. Been there, done that.

Reply

Seint makeup is the best! I’ve been using Cara’s makeup since she initially launched her first line. It only gets better!

Reply

I have those joggers from Lululemon. I have only worn them once but liked them. I wish they were a little longer but oh well.
I drink FairLife milk when in heavy training bit is great in my coffee.
We are in Park City this weekend at our second home. Boy, I have missed the mountains (from the plains of SD). I will do some easy runs and hikes while here.

Reply

I knew Utah felt a little better:). So happy you are in Park City at your second home, enjoy every second of the mountains. They are just the best!

Whoa! Tell that little man to slow down. Beck looks so grown up in that picture !!!

I KNOW! I cannot believe it. He is no longer a baby! I hope you are having a beautiful morning so far, Michele!

I do ideal lean for protein drink. They do a sampler pack if you like variety of flavors. Or Think for a protein bar.
I have a girls dinner out tonight, and Hope’s soccer tournament the rest of the weekend. Chris is the coach. It’s fun.

Reply

Chris is the coach of Hope’s soccer team?! That makes me so happy! Have the best time at girls dinner and then the tournament and I’ll try that variety pack, thank you for the help!

I really like Premier Protein drinks. We get them at Costco. Don’t bother with anything but chocolate, but it’s my go-to just to get in more protein every day. It’s like drinking chocolate milk!! My husband likes it too.

Reply

Good to know, I’ll grab them this next time! THANK YOU GRETCHEN!!!

Reply

I second the Premier Protein Shakes. Chocolate is the best.

I’ve been on the fence about those Spanx leggings for YEARS but you’ve officially convinced me. They look great on you!! So perfect for fall!
I get most of my makeup from sephora, but I’m terrible at make up. I LOVE Thrive mascara though, I think you can only buy it online but I’ve been using it long before it was on every podcast advertisement. It’s no joke, the best. I’ve tried so many and I will never stray from this.
I’m also convinced about the olaplex. It’s time to buy it.

Reply

Let me know what you think of the leggings! I’m obsessed! I’ve been needing a new mascara so I’ll grab that one. I needed this!!!

I am a night person so I should workout at night, but I have forever tried to fight my body& wake up early for strength. Since I am not a morning person, my runs are ALL over the place – mid-day, afternoon, even nighttime sometimes… the inconsistency drives me crazy but is necessary with kiddos currently. Lately they’re at noon because I was training for a 50k and frequently needed to squeeze in a 1.5-2hr run mid-week. This week, post-50k (last Saturday), I am doing zero running! I am spending my extra time sleeping. Did you take time off after your 50 miler? Trying to figure out a good plan to start back, now that my body is starting to feel normal again… Happy Friday!!

Reply

CONGRATS ON YOUR 50K! You are absolutely amazing!!!! I hope you are recovering well and great call on the sleeping more. I did take two weeks off if I remember correctly but then did Boston because I had an opportunity to do it for work! I would have definitely benefited from taking a few more weeks to just run easy though. Thanks friend and let me know what you decide on doing. So so cool about your 50k.

Reply

It’s the shoes!! They make Beck look like more of a kid than a baby :)
Sounds weird, but I like to brush a little blush on my eyelids–so much easier than doing eye shadow, but gives a little boost and brightness.
My daughter just picked up her husband(!)–they got married by proxy in August–from his Marine Corps base and is bringing him home for the first time since March! Can. Not. Wait. He will have a couple of weeks of leave before he has to report, and they will be living in North Carolina, so spending ALL of the time that I can hanging out with them, talking & eating :)

Reply

I totally agree, the shoes and jacket age him ha. Oh I will have to try that with my blush! I totally remember you telling me that they were planning on getting married soon, this makes me SO happy. Congratulations to everyone and I am so happy that he will be there with you all. Enjoy every single second!

I just ordered faux leather JOGGERS from Spanx. (Instagram ads finally wore me down.) Will report back as soon as I get them. Also where is that henley on the left from :)

Hi Janae! I’m off to do my my morning run! Morning runs are the best but I can’t do strength first thing in the morning.

Keep enjoying the beautiful weather in California! Love those morning runs. Thanks Amy, happy weekend!

I have a few different protein powders that I like, but as far as a protein drink that is already ready-to-go and I can just grab out of the fridge, I get Orgain from Costco. I usually get the regular chocolate kind, but sometimes I mix it up and get their plant based version (still chocolate) because its one of the best plant/vegan protein drinks I’ve tasted (though I’ve only tried a couple others).

My workouts have definitely switched around with phases of life. During High School almost all of my working out was related to sports (tennis and tennis conditioning) but I also swam and ran for cardio off and on too. During college, it was group workout classes all the way and always in the evenings. Post-college and early newly-wed life, it was a mix of sports and working out at the gym on our way home from work. After I had a baby (she’s now two), it changed again. She’s in the stroller while I either walk or run (depending on the day) and then a little bit of strength stuff and yoga when we get back.

Reply

THANK YOU and I will grab Orgain next time I am at Costco. I love that you get in your workout now with your little one, that is really sweet and you are a great example to her!! Hope you have the best weekend!

I’m recovering from PF, too (I went to the podiatrist last Friday). I think a lot of mine started from tight calves. One thing that helped me before seeing the dr was an assisted calf stretch. I find my calves hard to get a deep stretch in. Andrew can help! Lay on your back with your affected leg at 90 degrees and your foot at 90 and have someone press your toes towards you – just a bit to feel it. I had it done 2x (one session), held maybe 15 sec each time? (We did both legs also). Or really lean forward on that slanted board.

The podiatrist recommended the Strassburg sock. And that is what is working for me! I noticed improvement the first night. And after a week, I wake up almost completely ache free. My foot doesn’t hurt but it’s a bit tight in my Achilles but I also had a long day with an increase in walking for work. I also don’t think I wear perfectly each time. Since it’s one sized, it’s a little big for me. But you’re tall so shouldn’t run into that problem. I purchased mine at the dr office for $35. It’s about $40 on their website. The how to wear it video was helpful for me because the sock is so long on me, but I’d watch it anyways; it’s quick.

I might go for a walk at the lake one day today or Sat and see how it feels. Then if it’s good, go back and do some really short intervals of running.

Happy Friday!

Reply

HEY KAREN! Thank you so so much for helping me. I’m going to do this stretch after I leave the computer, I am very grateful for the help and I am so happy to hear that your foot is doing so well. I can’t wait to hear about your intervals of running, you’ve got this!

You know, I actually really LOVE that fairlife protein drink. It’s one of the best-tasting ones around. To me, the vanilla one tastes like a melted and super liquidy McDonald’s vanilla milkshake. I need to go to Costco to get some and stock up (thanks for sharing that they’re there!!!)–so far I have gotten them from my gym, and as a treat after a REALLY hard strength workout. But that gets so expensive! OMG.

That blush–it is the first one I consistently used. I love it! Another one I love that is very similar is the tarte amazonian clay blush in the color ‘paaarty’–VERY similar color to that Nars one. I barely know what I am doing wiht makeup, too, but I know that that is very good blush!!

I need to try those joggers. I hate that they don’t come in petite lengths–I’m too dang short. :( And those faux leather leggings I have heard ALL THE AMAZING THINGS ABOUT. I’m very curious, but I also am nervous to try them. Leggings never go so well for me (except for workout leggings because what else will I wear to the gym?!?!?). One day I think I will throw caution to the wind and just give them a try. :)

I might need to try that Olaplex 3. Fly-aways and frizzies are always tough, and I find that with my hair, after it reaches a certain length the ends break off very easily. No bueno.

Something for you to try: the ‘signature softblend sweatpants’ (joggers essentially but somehow called ‘sweatpants’) from Lou & Grey, which you can find on the loft website. BUTTERY SOFT. Not bulky. Comfy and cozy and cute. If you’ve never tried them, I’m curious to see what you think if you ever decide to! :)

LOVE the picture of Beck looking toddler-ish. He is growing up!
Have a GREAT weekend! :)

Reply

I must try the vanilla ones next! I hope they are a lot cheaper than when you get them at the gym. I will have to try that one next for my blush. I wish that the joggers did come in petite! BUMMER! I think you need to try the faux leather leggings, I was very unsure about them too but I’m obsessed. OFF TO LOOK UP THOSE SWEATPANTS… those sound amazing! Thanks Stephanie, you too! Have the best time with Tom!

My favorite protein bar is the Almond Butter Perfect Bar. I am super picky about bars but I really like that one. My favorite protein dring is Vega Protein Made Simple – it doesn’t have any artificial sweeteners, etc., and literally tastes like chocolate milk.

Reply

I must try that bar, thank you SO much and I’ll grab that protein drink too. Sounds perfect. Have the best weekend!

I wear blush most days, otherwise, I look super washed out. I most recently bought Seint makeup from a friend and while I don’t necessarily think it’s superior to other makeup, I really like that everything I need is in one little compact.

I’ve been drinking protein water that I get from Amazon, it’s such an easy way to get protein in when I can’t quite stomach a smoothie or food yet :) I also like Costco’s protein bars.

I pretty much always work out pretty early in the morning, but I also have to be at work at 7am. Everyone once in a while I’ll workout after school, but anything after about 5pm and I have the hardest time going to sleep.

My xc team is running Mt. Sac this weekend! There’s so much talent on that course, it’s exciting to watch. And I have my last super long run before my marathon this weekend!

Reply

Someone probably said this already but have you tried rolling your foot on a frozen aluminum can? Freeze a can of beans or whatever you have. Take the paper off. The cold and the rolling feel good on plantar issues. I hope your foot heals soon!

Reply

I haven’t tried using a can!! Brilliant, putting it in freezer now! Thanks Caroline, have a beautiful day!

I a m tempted to try this olaplaex product! Do you leave it in your hair and then rinse it out or is it a leave in product?

Hi Janae!! I am a longtime reader of 10+ years – you are the best :) and your attitude is inspiring! I’m getting back into running (I joined some run clubs for the first time and they are awesome).
