Friday Favorites!!

Another round of dry-needling.  I had two of the kids there with us, so I really had to be careful with my words;). My PT also did it in my calf, which hurt pretty bad but nothing like the heel.  Slowly but surely, things feel like they are improving.  I also had a sports massage/scraping session before the dry needling, and I am going to a podiatrist today!  I’m excited to see what he says.

Beck wanted to join me while I sat there but that didn’t last long…

He never stops wiggling when he is awake.

Skye went to school, Beck napped at my mom’s house, and we went on a date.  Biking doesn’t hurt in the slightest (my PT told me to go for it:) so we explored some trails.  We were going down a steep hill, and I lost control and flew over my handlebars.  Luckily, I still had my sweatshirt on at that point so I didn’t get too scraped up (I need biking clothes!).

We were on very beginner trails ha, I don’t know how Andrew does the trails that he does.

Andrew was happy to see me add MTB to my favorites on my watch:)

We picked up Beck and then grabbed something to eat.  Those teeth are coming in… they terrify me each time I feed him ha.

Andrew added some more friends to our front and the last highlight of the day was soaking in the hot tub with the kids (while Beck slept).

This week’s Friday favorites:

*I have two new foods that I tried last weekend and I must share them because they are good.  DRIED WATERMELON?!  I was skeptical because I’m not one to usually want to eat a watermelon rind, but these were incredible.   My friend said she got them at Sam’s Club.

IMG 3421

*Some other friends with us just returned from living in Australia, and they brought back lbs and lbs of chocolate.  They had us try this one, I was very skeptical but it is now my favorite candy. THE JELLY CANDY INSIDE THE CHOCOLATE WAS TOO GOOD.

IMG 3411

*This quote from Alexi Pappas.  If you don’t hit your goals, this is the silver lining.  Let’s all keep going after them until we do… it is making me very excited to get up and run!

*Now that it is getting colder outside, my girls love these stuffed animals that you warm up in the microwave (the thing Brooke’s head is on).   I can’t find the same ones that we have, but this one is very similar!  It helps them to feel extra cozy.

IMG 3004

*The amazing Hollie and Jonah.  Tears streamed down my face when I saw what they did together last weekend.  I’ve met Hollie once, and she is the best of the best.

*These earrings…. One of my friends wears these wing earrings every time she races, and they are just the cutest.  These would be a fun gift for a runner friend of yours too.

IMG 3618

*Ashton’s post—> How Having 3 Kids Instead of One Has Taken Me From an A+ Mom to a Proud C-ish Mom.  I laughed the entire post and could relate big time ha.

*Renee shared this with me… get ready to tear up.

*This scene of Andrew mopping while holding Beck… It just made me happy.

Who is running CHICAGO this weekend?

-I am also very jealous about this one… it is a dream marathon for me!  Can I track you?  Does anybody know someone that is doing both Chicago and Boston?

Have any favorite things from this week?

Ever had a bike crash?  Fallen while running?

Have any fun plans for the weekend?

That is SO so so exciting. Please tell me all about it after!

Oh Janae I pray you are OK. That sounds frightening what happened to you on the bike! Beck is SO gorgeous, all of your family is. Also congrats on your marathon! Very proud of you.

Have a great weekend Janae.

THANK YOU DONNA! It really freaked me out ha… that’s why I like running, we don’t go flying through the air;). Thank you friend and I hope your day is a beautiful one so far!

Hollie is incredible! I love following her (and Jonah) on IG.
And that video!! Tears flowing for sure! I too, would love to know if anyone is doing both Chicago and Boston. I think it would be super hard, just with the travel alone! Both are on my bucket list to run!
Oh man, I had a crash on a bike on Mother’s Day a few years ago. My husband, our 2 boys, and I rode our bikes to get bagels, and on the way home, I ended up flipping over my handle bars and broke (really badly) my pinkie on my right hand. We all laughed, because thankfully I didn’t have much pain, and still refer to it as the best mother’s day ever! Ha ha! So glad you are ok!
Also glad you made it through another round of dry needling. Hopefully you are past the worst of it, and can start running pain free soon.
Yes, the picture of Andrew holding Beck while mopping is the cutest!
We have absolutely no plans this weekend!! Yay! And, the weather has been cooler too (with actual rain yesterday and today). So we are all going t enjoy being a little lazy.
Have a great Friday Janae!

Let’s do Chicago next year all together?! That happened on Mother’s Day? Oh my goodness! I’m glad you were mostly okay. Bikes are scary! Enjoy a cozy and relaxing weekend!

I’m enjoying some time off after the marathon last Sunday. I highly recommend the OKC Memorial Marathon for anyone interested. The organization and course support were every bit as good as the bigger races I’ve done. In the final stretch of the course, there were 168 banners, each bearing the name and photo of one of the bombing victims. It was a poignant moment.

Runners were able to use their bibs for a free entry to the Memorial Museum. That was a sobering yet worthwhile visit and I’d recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

CONGRATS CYNTHIA on your marathon last Sunday. You are amazing and so smart to take some time off. That race sounds amazing and I bet that final stretch was very touching. I will definitely have to come do that race, thanks for sharing and I hope you are recovering well!

That bike accident sounds scary! I’ve luckily never been in one (mostly because I’m a major wimp and don’t go very fast and avoid mountain biking!) This is just proving my point haha. I have definitely fallen while running….which has only happened on trails as well haha! Once was during a trail race and there were a bunch of people behind me since it was single track and they couldn’t get around so I had to hobble along so I wouldn’t hold anyone back! It was so embarrassing.

Have a great weekend! I have a race tomorrow but otherwise will just be watching all the sports and tailgating with friends :)

Reply

Wimp or just really smart avoiding dangerous mountain biking haha! Oh I bet that was an embarrassing morning but I can relate! Good luck tomorrow and please let me know how your race goes. You are amazing. Enjoy your time with friends!

Reply

Sub 3 pushing a stroller is amazing !! Wow.

Glad your feet are improving!! And you are brave to try mountain biking.

It is Canadian Thanksgiving so really looking forward to the long weekend and a roast because the other half is not a fan of turkey.

Likely some running and a whole lot of chilling

I know friends doing Boston but I don’t have friends doing Chicago. It is crazy because even though they are all double vaccinated the US doesn’t accept mixed vaccines currently so its covid test for some! The things we do for a race ?

Happy Friday Janae!

Reply

Hahah I think I’m a little too nervous to ever try it again. Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! I hope you guys have the absolute best time. I don’t know what a mixed vaccine is?!? I hope your friends all have the best experience! Thanks Kristine and go run some miles for me.

Oh I love that quote! I need to write it down since I bombed my marathon last weekend. Thanks for sharing!

Reply

Molly. I have been wondering about your marathon. I am SO sorry. Next one is yours. Reread my CIM recap if you are feeling down, you aren’t alone in those bad races. YOU ARE AMAZING and I can’t wait to see what is next for you!

Reply

Thanks Janae! I will definitely look back on that post.
During the race I did use one of you tips: my friends and family will love me the same no matter what my time/performance is. So helpful!

Reply

I will be SO curious to hear your thoughts on dry needling when you’re all done with it! I am intrigued, but man, it does not sound fun!

My favorite thing from the week is a tie-dye sweatshirt I got on the clearance rack at Athleta! It’s somehow flattering and SO comfy.

Seeing some friends this weekend and hoping to do fun fall things! I need an apple cider donut in my life.

Reply

Hey Kristin! I would never wish the pain on my worst enemy ha but I think it is helping. I’ll write more about it when I figure this all out. I need that sweatshirt. Go get that donut and enjoy every second with friends!

I meant to post this earlier, but I had really bad plantar fasciitis a few years ago. Along with the night splints, custom orthotics and stretches, my orthopaedist recommended DIY scraping. The muscles on the outside of your leg are usually pretty tight and knotted. Taking the flat edge of a butter knife and run it (with some pressure) up your leg perpendicular to that muscle. It hurts a lot but really helps.

Reply

Jen! Thank you so much, I never thought about doing that and I’m going to try it! I might have to email you if that’s okay! Thanks for the help, I really appreciate you. Have a beautiful day and I’m so glad your plantar is better!

Found some more cool stuff if you want to study up, would be great for Andrew too if he does not have them already.

Hope this link is ok to post here: https://slickdeals.net/f/15320518-human-anatomy-atlas-2021-complete-3d-human-body-ios-or-android-app-0-99

I plan on getting all of these while they are on sale.

No problem! Email if you need to. Hope you feel better soon. I know how miserable it is!

Hi Janae! Mountain biking seems terrifying but I bet it’s really beautiful on the trails. Do you take your bike up using a lift? Otherwise biking uphill also seems really hard.
My friends who have lived overseas say that the Cadbury from the UK is the best one! Happy Friday!!

Reply

HEY AMY. Yes, sometimes we do take a lift and that is so fun but I also think biking uphill is more fun because it is less scary haha. That’s what my friends were saying too. Thanks Amy, you too!

Least favorite thing this week – Les traveled to Las Vegas for a work conference. Favorite thing he came back! And he brought Hawaiian chocolates, including our favorite – Maui Caramacs. I looked for them when we here in Hawaii last month and couldn’t find them anywhere.

I hope you’re not hurting too much from your crash, Janae. I’ve had several bike crashes, but my worst injuries have happened when I was running. I sprained my right ankle on a trail running mishap a few years ago. I slammed the entire left side of my body last year while running in Hokas. I was severely pigeon toed as a child and still slightly turn my feet in. I loved how comfortable they are but the wider soles combined with my turned in feet caused me to trip.

Reply

So glad Les was able to bring back those chocolates.. yum! Oh that running crash sounds like it was terrible. Ouch! Glad you are okay now❤️ Thanks Kathy, I was pretty surprised that I wasn’t hurting more from the crash! Have a beautiful day!

I love that Brooke sleeps with an eye mask. I’ve slept with an eye mask most of my life but didn’t start that young – she’s setting herself up to be the best sleeper! I may need a warm stuffed animal now, too!
Favorite thing this week is the Senita Weekend Joggers. They are AMAZING! I took a friends advice and ordered a size down than I normally wear with Senita, and I need them in every color now.
Running a half-marathon tomorrow – my plan is to stick with my running friend because it’s more fun that way – but if we are under 1:38 at mile 12, I’m going to use everything left in my tank to get my dream sub 1:45! We’ve been holding 7:55 in tempo runs, so a 1:45 isn’t unreasonable! But it’s been raining all week and the race is on a greenway in the mountains, so I’m a little nervous about wet leaves on the pavement – I don’t want to fall.
Have a great weekend!

Reply

She really is such. a good sleeper which will take her far in life:). WELL NOW I must order these joggers. Thank you for sharing, I’m always on the lookout for things like this. GOOD LUCK TOMORROW. I’m cheering so loud for you… and that sub 1:45 is absolutely yours. If you have been doing that in tempo runs you should be so confident… the taper + race day excitement + adrenaline + people to be doing it with = you will smash your goal and I better get to hear all about it. BE CAREFUL and I hope all of the leaves are gone. Thanks Rachel, you too!

Oh my goodness Janae; first your PF issues and then going over your bike handlebars. You sound as accident/injury prone as me, so I feel you (not that I get hurt a lot, but when I do, it seems to be a lot of things happening back to back)! Hope you are able to rest up. I once went over my handlebars while mountain biking on vacation in Colorado (this was back in high school) and I nearly gave my dad a heart attack! And thank you for sharing that Chicago marathon video- I am not a huge crier, but that one got my eyes a little teary! Have a great weekend!

Reply

Yes… a little too accident prone! Oh I bet that gave your dad a heart attack! So so scary, and I hope you haven’t had any mountain biking injuries since. Thanks Emily, you too!

Reply

Hi Janae – oh my gosh that bike tumble sounds scary. So glad you are ok. You are brave!
I’m running Chicago on Sunday. It is my 5th chicago marathon – it’s amazing and I feel so blessed to be a part of it. This year is going to be pretty warm. I am super scared because I’ve had on and off trouble with my calves cramping during long runs. I am normally a back of the back runner so I can’t slow down much more. I’m thinking about some of your posts from the past – I’m going to smile and pump my arms and say I can do hard things!

Reply

Cathy!!! Your fifth Chicago. You are incredible. I am hoping so so bad your calves stay happy the whole way. Please let me know how it goes, have the best time with al of the smiles!

OVER the handlebars!? Wow, it looks like no other pain compares to dry needling in your life! Wait, what about giving birth? Today’s pic of the needling makes it look worse than your prior pic. I’m not seeing any strategies here for pain management, what’s up? C’mon mental game. What do you think: go yang? visualize yourself in a field? multiple strategies for different phases (sticking it in, pulsing, pulling it out?)? Apparently, some people do this all the time, right? Where are they? Do they put videos out? HEARTING all your efforts to knock this out, and following the journey.

Also, when I was a young, young person I went over the handlebars of a motorcycle on a trail. Got a big, big rock in my stomach. It was fall, so I had plenty of clothes on. Those brakes tho! I got back on the bike and made it home. In my mind the incident was more about proper use of the brake, and NEVER doing what I did again!

I met Gary Morgan yesterday at the Boston marathon expo. He helped me pick up my bib. He went to the ‘88 Seoul marathon representing the USA in speed walking! He is walking Chicago tomorrow and then Boston on Monday. He was so sweet and kind! I also met DAVE MCGILLIVRAY the Boston marathon race director! After listening to his interview on the Alli on the Run podcast I told him I was worried about his sleeping habits. Again, he was so kind and it was fun to talk to him. So now I’ve met two running celebrities- YOU and DAVE! It was such a fun day!

Reply

Natalie!!! How cool! And I love that he is doing both Boston and Chicago! Wow. Please let me know how Boston goes, you are incredible!
