Does anybody else? + Dry Needling (OUCH)

Thank goodness for activities that get in my need for Vitamin D when I am not running/going on walks etc!  I think the fresh air and sunshine are among the biggest reasons I love running, so it felt so good to get out of the house with Andrew, Beck, and Skye to Sundance.

The leaves were unreal.

It was Beck’s first time on the chair lift, and he took in every sight and sound the whole way.  We were on the chair lift for about an hour round-trip, and Skye had stories for us the entire way… She is a chatter just like me;)

Because sometimes you have to get a cookie for everyone as an appetizer.  Life is too short to miss out on face-sized cookies.

IMG 3435

We ordered the nachos from the restaurant at the top of the mountain, and it was heavenly.

IMG 7916

We realized on the way up that we had lost Beck’s blanket…

IMG 3446

We saw it on the way back down, and then Andrew ran up half of the mountain to go and get it.  I was most definitely jealous of the Sundance trail running that he got in;)

I went to an excellent PT for dry needling, and I can actually put some pressure on my left foot again.  Hallelujah.  I go again on Thursday, and I think this is going to solve the problem… Along with the other 50 things I am currently doing (I’ll write a detailed post on everything I am doing, so it is all in one place once I heal this foot).

I never knew such pain existed.  It hurt so bad.  I cried, and I was sweating like crazy when the needles were inserted.  They kept them in for 15 minutes and every few seconds the needle pulsed, causing more of an aching feeling, but the needle’s insertion was next-level pain.  Dry needling helps to reduce the tightness and tone of the muscles that are causing the pain.

The pain was worth it to feel a bit more mobile!

IMG 3470

The heat pack after felt so good, and I’ll stick to only heat (no ice) for 24 hours.

Just a few questions…

Does anybody else find remnants of fruit snacks in their hair (even though they can’t remember the last time they ate a fruit snack themselves)?

IMG 3014

Does anybody else want to freeze time?  I want them all to be at this age forever.

IMG 3085

Does anybody else KNOW that this is the best cereal that has ever been created?  It’s at Costco right now if you haven’t tried it yet.

IMG 3452

Does anybody else jump on one foot to the hot tub first thing in the morning in an attempt to take away the knife in the heel pain?  I SURE HOPE THE ANSWER IS NO ha and that this morning I won’t have to do this because of my dry needling.

IMG 3427

Does anybody else get injured and then realize how incredibly grateful they are for the days when they can walk with absolutely zero pain?!  Injuries always change my perspective on things!

IMG 3475

——————————————————————————————————-

Are you much of a chatter?  Does it depend on the person you are talking to?

-I will tell my entire life story to every human I meet, which is probably one of the reasons I force you guys to talk with me every day;)

Can you answer any of my anybody else questions?

Last baked good that you had, and please rate in on a scale from 1-10?

Does it feel like fall where you are?  Are the leaves changing?  Needing more sweaters?

Dry meddling hurts so bad! I sweat like crazy too. It’s so helpful though!
And you have totally influenced me lately – I got the madewell jeans and top you recommended and I am seriously considering buying the Hyperion elite 2s. I have a half coming up and I am really tempted!
Have a wonderful day!!

Reply

Haha I’m sorry I’ve been a bad influence with shopping. I do hope you get the Hyperion elite springboards ha. Good luck at your half! You better tell be how it goes! I really am so sunny how effective dry needling is… thanks Jen!

When I am injured and see others running, I want to yell, “You are soooo lucky!” I am not a chatterbox at all. I almost peg the introvert scale. I have had to work really hard to be “social” but I also know my limits and when it is time to just be by myself. The last baked good I had wasn’t really baked – a scotcheroo. Yummy! And as for fall, some leaves are starting to turn but it has been unseasonably warm and not our normal fall rollercoaster. Yesterday someone mentioned traveling for Thanksgiving and I was like, “What? Why are you making plans for Thanksgiving already?”

Reply

I’ve had that same thought a thousand times already! I forgot about scotcharoos and now I need one for breakfast! ‘Fall rollercoaster’ haha yes! And why would they make thanksgiving plans 6 months in advance ?! I’m dreading November because that means Beck is one. I hope you have a beautiful day Jackie!

Are they also dry needling your calf? I had both to relieve my pf – some in my foot but more in the calf:)

Reply

No! I’ll ask them to on Thursday! Did those hurt as bad as the foot?

Reply

Mine weren’t attached to anything – so no pulsing. She just sticks the needles in, works on some other areas, and then takes them out. It doesn’t feel great when they go in – especially when the muscle grabs them – but worth it. I had three treatments and pain was gone. I had the pain for almost a year. Good luck and hope it helps!

If you are getting a benefit from dry needling, you might look into getting a TENS unit (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator – TENS). It is a small machine with wires that end with little patches that you apply to the skin over the muscle that is hurting or spasming. It delivers small electrical pulses, similar to the needles. I had one following a broken arm and it felt like a constant buzzzzzz when it was turned on. You can apply it and do it all in your own home on your own time whenever you want. My insurance covered it completely because my physical therapist prescribed it. I have to be honest I personally did not get a huge benefit from it but it did help a little bit…. But maybe it would help your situation if the dry needling seems to be really helping. I sure hope you feel better!

I have one of these ahhhhh! This is so good to hear, now to find it in storage! Thank you so much Melly for all of your help… it means the world to me!

Those mountain views are INSANE!! Absolutely gorgeous. I’ve never had dry needling but I had no idea it was so painful…I always assumed it was something soothing like acupuncture but now I’ll make sure I never get it. I hope it helps though!!

Last baked good I had was jammy biscuits! I love the Great British Bake Off and now that the new season started I do the same bakes as the contestants since the recipes are posted online. I started last year as something I could look forward to every week and had to do it again this year!

Reply

Hey Gretchen… haha I hope you never have to get it either, it makes me nauseated just thinking about it again haha. I need some jammy biscuits in my life and I need to watch that show. Thanks for sharing friend and I hope you make something fun again soon!

I’ve dealt with 2 really bad bouts of PF. One of the things that helped the last bout was before I got out of bed i would do like 50 ankle pumps with PF foot to loosen it up before I took the first step in the morning. Helped decrease that first step pain a lot. Also, I would do ankle pumps throughout the day when I was sitting to help loosen things up. Good luck. It’s an annoying injury for sure!

Reply

I literally read your comment when I woke up this morning and did the ankle pumps… they definitely loosened things ups a lot. THANK YOU for the tip! Have a great day:)

I hit Costco for baked goods yesterday. My daughter and my boyfriend have been on a blueberry muffin kick lately so I decided to surprise them with the Costco ones.
While I was there I saw the “mini” all American Chocolate Cakes.
The big ones are my favorite birthday cake so I got them. So good! And there is nothing mini about them.

Reply

Now I need some costco muffins, they are the best! Hahaha I’m glad they aren’t actually mini:). Have the best day, Kristen!

What gorgeous mountains! My boss is going to Yellowstone at the end of this week – I am so jealous. Pre-pandemic me and my husband were planning a trip out West for mid-late September but all our planned travel plans changed – I guess its not the worst thing because 2 of the 4 hikes we had planned are closed due to construction.

We are renting a cabin in northern Maine this weekend trying to find cooler temps and color. Its going to be in the 60s during the day, high 40s at night – I wish it would be cooler!! I feel bad for the Boston folks on Monday where it is supposed to be in the 70s (guess it could be worse, 80s or 90s).

Reply

Oh Yellowstone would be incredible right now. I hope you guys get to reschedule that trip soon when the hikes are all open again too:). ENJOY your time in Northern Maine, that sounds like perfection! I didn’t know that about their weather… I was really hoping for a perfect day for them. Happy Wednesday, Jessey!

Reply

Ha, I’ll bet the hot tub helps a lot! Heat really helps mine.. I haven’t tried dry needling but it sounds good. There are times where “no pain, no gain” really is true.
Hope the foot is feeling good today!

Reply

NO PAIN NO GAIN… I’m going to repeat that to myself tomorrow when I get it done. Thank you Jenny, it’s definitely healing. I hope your day is a fabulous one!

Reply

Yes, I want to freeze time for my nieces and keep them at this age!

Yes, I am definitely grateful for not being injured after an injury! Same for being sick. Like when I get a cold, I long for the days I don’t need to use a tissue every 5 seconds lol.

I am a chatter box too, I will fill in silence if needed hahaha.

Reply

Hey Mariah! The same thing happens to me when I am sick too… time for me to start really being grateful when all is well:). Your nieces are so lucky to have you. HAHA NO SILENCE ALLOWED… I get too nervous when it is silent, I get it. Have the best day!

I love dry needling..had it done on my hamstring injury. it took several locations for him to finally hit the right spot to make a significant difference. I was amazed how much soreness it caused, but it was different than the actual injury pain. My hamstring healed in a much shorter time than any others I know with hamstring injuries who have taken just a straight PT route. I am also a chatterbox. I LOVE to know about people and their “stories” and I love to share mine. I am always saying to my hubby, “I wonder what their life story is” or I make up a life story for people. When he gets irritated by someone driving slower in front of him on the road, I might say, “be gentle, he/she might have just found out they have cancer, they may have just lost a loved one etc., give grace…we are not in a hurry” or I make up bigger life stories about people we may enounter…I am sure I am way off base most of the time. I also am an oversharer, ask me anything, I will tell you all about ME!

Reply

Tiffany, that soreness (other than the actual injury pain) is SO real today! I am thrilled to hear that your hamstring did so well with the dry needling… I think I will be doing it a bunch now. I’m right there with you and needing to know everyone’s stories. I love that you really give people the benefit of the doubt. Let’s get together and overshare all of the things haha. Hope your day is a beautiful one.

Reply

Sorry your foot is in so much pain. Do you think racing on it made the problem worse?

Reply

Hey Shelly! Yes, for sure it did! It felt great the days leading up to the race and then the first six miles of the race but then the next 7 miles made it the worse it has ever been:(. I’m really going to baby it for a while now! I hope your day is a great one!

Hi! To help relieve some of the pain first thing in the morning, you can stretch your calf and foot for several minutes before getting out of bed.
To stretch the calf, just loop a towel around the ball of your foot and pull back until you feel a stretch in the calf.
To stretch the foot, grab your big toe and pull it back. You should feel it in the bottom of your foot. You can also massage the bottom of your foot when you do this. Hope that all makes sense. Easier to demonstrate than explain with words.
That needle in the heel sure is painful. And just for future reference, needling in other areas of the body isn’t near as painful. I often get it done in the lower back or glutes and it’s not too bad.
Good luck!

Reply

THANK YOU THANK YOU for the calf and foot stretch, they both make a lot of sense. That is good to know about the dry needling elsewhere, I wasn’t sure how anyone endures it anywhere else. Thank you Jessica and I hope your day is off to a great start.

Hi Janae! Injury is definitely the best way to appreciate your normal quality of life. I often find myself thinking what I wouldn’t give to be healthy when I’m injured.
Those views look amazing! Enjoy your vacation!

Reply

I’m feeling that right now… can’t wait to be moving normal again. Thanks Amy, have a beautiful day!

Hi Janae!!!

Love your blog!!! I remember years ago when I had plantar fasciitis I reached out to you and you gave me encouragement :) I had it for almost a year but still worked out and worked through it as I wanted to try and deal with it without a steroid shot. I wore my dorsey wedge at night and did lots of stretching, rolling on golf balls and frozen water bottles as well as wearing sneakers with orthotics almost exclusively for almost a year. But I’m happy to say it did go away and knock on wood has been great since. Sounds like you are doing all the right things to get you back to normal soon! Thinking good healing thoughts for you!!!
Best,
Jonna

Reply

Jonna! Almost a year?!? I feel like I’m dying and it’s only been a few weeks! I need to grab a Dorsey wedge. SO happy to hear that you are all good now and you are giving me hope! I hope your day is a beautiful one❤️

Praying for fast healing for your PF! I feel your pain on the dry needling….and yes, keep it heated! I usually have it for more minor injuries and I walk non-stop time to keep the muscles loose after dry needling!

I am a absolute chatter box. I once dated a guy and he said to me “you never really do stop talking, do you?” bahaha.

It is looking like fall in Minnesota, but it is unseasonably warm. Although, I am loving the cooler mornings (and evenings) and evenings before it gets “hot” 70+ degrees in the afternoon.

Happy Wednesday Janae!

Reply

Hey Becky! Thank you so much I’m really hoping that it heals fast too. That’s a good point on keeping the muscles loose! Hahah I’ve had someone tell me that too. Keep enjoying those cool mornings and nights! Thanks friend, you too!

Eating a piece of apple cranberry bread I came to a work. 10/10. Probably partially because someone else made it. I find that to be a treat in itself.

You know what heals planter, baking. Happy recipe hunting. ;)

Well now I just need to make some of the apple cranberry bread! That sounds so delicious. I hope you have a beautiful day Erica!

Where did you get your supercute phone case? LOVE IT. I hope your foot consistently feels better soon! I know PF isn’t much fun! Have an inspired day!

The mountains are beautiful! When we were out in Colorado the other week, we didn’t have the time to drive up to the mountains, so thank you for sharing yours ?
Oh man, you are so right about being injured and really appreciating being able to run and walk! I get jealous of people running when I can’t.
I had no idea dry needling was so painful! I haven’t ever had it done, but one of my sisters has had it a few times. She says it works so well! I’m hoping the same for you.
I was just at Costco yesterday and saw that cereal. Now I know that it’s good, so I’ll get it next time. Our Costco has the biggest pumpkins right now! I need to go back in a couple of weeks to get some to carve.
And ha ha… The random piece of fruit snack in your hair… Sometimes I miss those days. But, I am loving this stage so much! Having mostly grown kids is really fun.
Today is my husband’s birthday, so I’m going to make a chocolate orange cheesecake for him. Chocolate orange is his favorite combination, and we all love cheesecake.
Have a great day Janae, and keep letting your foot heal ?

Reply

I hope that you will get a chance to be in Colorado again soon and time in the mountains. I’m really hopeful about dry needling continuing to help. I’m so happy it has worked so well for your sister! Let me know what you think of the cereal and I cannot wait to carve pumpkins. HAPPIEST birthday to your husband and wow, that recipe sounds intense. You are the best mom and wife. Thanks friend, have a beautiful day!

I can be an open book and talk non stop when I am 1 on 1 with someone, but in a group, I’m not much of a talker. Maybe it’s my introvertedness. Sometimes after working from home all day, even though I have discussions with co workers through our chat on Teams, I miss the in person interaction and chat up a storm to my husband until he eventually asks if I can please stop talking lol. As much as I like working from home (introvert!), I think it’s good for me to have a mix of in office and home because I need that social interaction too. This is what I learned through the pandemic.

Reply

Oh that is interesting… I relate with that a bit too. It’s much harder to be open with a group vs one on one with each person in that same group ha. Have they let you know when you will be back in office again? I really hope it is soon!

Reply

I actually am in the office every other week for now. We have been at 50% office capacity since February. I think it’s a good balance of having that time at home and also having time in the office. My company is learning to be more flexible and offer a hybrid schedule once they bring everyone back to the office full time. Before covid my company didn’t even have an option to work from home so it’s interesting to see things change.

Reply

Oh that sounds like an awesome balance now! Your work has made a lot of changes, so awesome they have become more flexible! Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day, Alicia!

Were you having a heart attack with Beck on the chairlift? My littlest guy is a squirmy wormy and although he’s older than Beck, I cannot imagine being brave enough to do that with him! That looks like such a fun little adventure, though. My oldest is Skye’s age, and he is also very fun to chat with. I always say that I wish I could bottle them up at this time, and then open the bottle when I am like 90 years old just to see them this little again.
That cereal looks amazing!

Reply

Hahaha I would have if I was holding him but Andrew had him so that he couldn’t even budge. Aren’t those conversations just the best?! Oh bottling it up sounds really good right about now. Have a beautiful day with your boys!

The pain sensation that is sweeping the nation, baba bop pop yamaha ha hahaha!!! Sing it with me. Hehehe. I know nothing about dry needling, so I’m enjoying what you share. Here’s what I think, the direct route is most efficient and CAN create the most disruption. Indirect/ possibly circuitous routes do not generate as much disruption at the outset, but they are less efficient and can bring disruption later. So, disruption/ pain seems like a necessary byproduct of growing and continuous improvement. You wrote about embracing the suck, and the like. Here it comes again.

We can either look at it as going from suck to suck, or improvement to improvement. The choice is yours. Along these lines, do you ever do dance moves? Oh, yes, you do. I recall you doing some at your sister’s house. And you were just close to the dance man himself, your brother in St. George! Dance moves imo can be like walking in grass. This also ties in with something Hawk or his son presented – incorporating different movements. How appropriate you had Cosmo at the school race!!!! It’s sooooooooooo intuitive.

Reply

Oh, someone said familiarity breeds contempt. Someone else shared it with me a long time ago. It’s hard to unhear it, especially following a personal experience.

Something for chatterers to factor in. Something for everyone to consider carefully.

Of course some people could go back and forth all day/ week! For example, curiosity killed the cat and satisfaction brought it back.

Reply

That’s interesting- I have had dry needling in my neck before and it was crazy painful but even after many sessions I don’t think I had 15 minutes straight that sounds like a lot! I would get like three bad pulses in like three different spots in my neck and upper shoulder. It was painful but I would only tear up briefly but I think 15 minutes would have basically killed me. Maybe next time they can split it with the calf?

Reply

Man I just broke my rib and it has made me realize how grateful I should be for things like strength training. Before the injury I hated strength training but now I would give anything to just do some situps or something! Feels so strange to not be able to do anything.
Also I am a total chatter but only with people I know well. My poor husband has to listen to so many boring stories! Ha.

Reply

Nooooooooo I am so so sorry!!! How long is the recovery for this?

Reply

I must have a high tolerance for pain because dry needling doesn’t bother me that much- and I hate needles!! Its always been my go to with injuries and I feel like I recover faster.
