(Tank, shorts, cool ankle weights that help to get the burn with leg lifts/donkey kicks/leg whips etc:)

It turns out that the 20 x 400m workout doesn’t love my body.  Once it made my calf act up, and this time it caused my foot to not be happy.

I woke up yesterday morning and realized my foot was feeling off (plantar problems), so I had that fun decision to make—> run and maybe make it worse or take a day or two off and wait for it to feel 100% again.  I chose to take the day off, and it felt so much better as the day went on.  I probably could have run on it because it wasn’t that bad, but IMO it’s ALWAYS worth it to be cautious with this kind of stuff because I’d rather take 10ish miles off than 100s of miles off from a more serious injury because I ran through pain that I shouldn’t have.  I’m going to go have a sports massage today just to really stay on top of it.

I was thrilled to have Andrew join me for a gym workout in our garage.

We switched between the rower and weights.  I can’t last long on the rower (not because of my foot… it felt fine) because it is so hard.  I did 7 x 3 minutes on the rower with a set of weights in between each time.

IMG 2137

Beck joined us at the end of the workout.

IMG 2143

We took Baretta out for a walk and I couldn’t believe how interested Beck was in the garbage truck that we went by.   It’s fun to see him get so excited about things now.

Watch out world for Skye Jo Baron.

It was a ‘grab all of the leftovers from the fridge and eat them for dinner’ kind of a night.

Ended the night with this.  I could eat this cereal every day of my life and never get sick of it!

Let’s go over some of my favorite things this week:

*My brother’s family has Greenlight cards for their kids, and they love them so we decided to try them out.  The kids feel so cool and responsible now with these.  The cards come with an app that is on my phone and Andrew’s phone.  You can manage the accounts on the app (add money, transfer to savings, invest, send money, set up an allowance, etc.), and they now have a card for when they want to spend their money.  They can sit down with us with the app and go over where they want to put their money, what goals they have for savings, etc. I never have cash on me, so it’s hard for me to remember to pay them for things (i.e. if Brooke watches Beck/Skye while I am working, then I pay her:), which makes it so easy to do right from the app.

I’m not connected with this company, but there is a referral program if you want to try it out!  If you sign up through HERE, then we both get $30 after the first month!

IMG 2027

It’s been really fun to start to teach them about investing (they offer investment plans designed just for kids where we can research and discuss different plans together), they earn 1% cash back on purchases made with the card (that goes right to their savings) and they earn up to 2% on savings (we can also set up a higher parent-paid interest rate for when our kids’ save money to help incentivize them to save).

It will be extremely easy to manage what our kids choose to do with their money over the years and teach them about budgets while we prepare them for the future of being financially independent.   We first looked into doing this through our bank, but they have an age limit (13) and not nearly as many different options as Greenlight, so this was the perfect choice for us because we want to help them learn now!

IMG 2028

*I saw Becky’s post about these Madewell jeans, and they looked so cute on her that I went and tried them on and fell in love with them.   They are high rise and hit right above the ankle (which my nieces say is currently cool;).  While I was there, I grabbed this super soft shirt that I am wearing below too.  The pants run a little big, so I went down one size.  PS they take $20 off your jeans if you bring in an old pair to exchange, and they also give 15% off for healthcare workers/students (Andrew is both of those right now, so they gave him the deal for my clothes)!  There aren’t many jeans I will wear because I love the comfort of joggers so much, but these are just as comfortable.

IMG 1749

*The LuLaRich documentary on Amazon Prime was extremely interesting!

*The Vivo Soundtrack.   I started listening to it in the car for the kids, and now I am hooked on it myself too.

*A few of you told me to try candy corn + peanut M&M’s, and I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart.  It’s delicious… I also added plain peanuts to the combo a few days later, and that was pure perfection.

I bought the gel top coat you recommended and it is definitely my Friday favorite! Painted my nails on Tuesday and no chips yet!! Normally I chip my nails same day.

Never get sick of Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Honey Nut Cheerios. I could eat cereal every day too, perfect snack.

Reply

Mariah, I am SO happy that you love it. You just inspired me to paint my nails this morning, it really is amazing how long it keeps things from chipping. I’m very grateful to whoever invented cereal. It is just the best and I hope you have some today. Have a great day!

My favorite thing was the beautiful weather yesterday here and I got in an early morning run followed by a pumpkin spice latte. Today we have a rainstorm..lol but I have 4 days off. We are headed to Manning Park and we were supposed to camp but we couldn’t do bear to tent camp with the predicted rainfall amounts and got a room at the resort instead haha. And I am running a trail race tomorrow so should be interesting. Apparently there might also be trace amounts of snow…the views are supposed to be stunning when the weather is clear but alas I think it will be a really rainy run ?

I think it is awesome that you are teaching your kiddos so early about money.

I hope your foot feels better soon Janae and that you guys have a great weekend!!

I hope you are okay with getting two replies back from me today! Perfect weather + pumpkin spice latte = heaven! I think you made the best choice with getting a room for this weekend. GOOD LUCK tomorrow and I have to see pics on your IG. Snow already?!?! Thanks Kristine, off to get it rubbed out. Have the best time adventuring tomorrow.

Malt o meal s’mores cereal is the best. It only comes in a gigantic bag but I can finish it off in a week. I love it! Chocolate lucky charms and cocoa pebbles are my second and third favorites.
I’m glad to see the Halloween m&must are out. I will pick up a few bags for baking. I love them in cookies.
I’ve dealt with runners knee and peroneal tendinitis the last two years. I think I’m finally on top of them. I just had bronchitis and pulled a chest muscle coughing. I don’t know that any fall racing will be happening because it hurts to breathe deep. I’m trying to figure out what I can do without making it worse. I’m so mad. I was at such a good place in my training. I think I would have set some PR’s.
Have a great weekend!

That cereal is so so amazing. All three of them are gone very quickly if we have them here. SO happy that you are able to come out on the other side from both runners knee and peroneal tendinitis. YOU PULLED A CHEST MUSCLE COUGHING?! Lee, that sounds terrible. I am so so sorry. I really hope that you are able to get in your fall racing after all of the work you have done. Keep me updated, please. Thank you, you too!

Oh there is a good climbing film called the Alpinist in theaters I saw a trailer and can’t wait to see it when it is released in Canada!

Have a great day

I cannot wait… I loved watching Free Solo (although my hands were sweating the entire time) so I need to see this one too. Thanks friend, you too!

Reply

You just reminded me of this Halloween snack mix I make every year : candy corn, regular m&ms, peanut m&ms, and chex mix.
I try to wait til October to make it.

Reply

Well, now I must add chex mix to mine, sounds amazing! I hope your morning is off to a great start, Kristen. I hope your daughter and boyfriend are doing well!

Greenlight card is awesome! I set it up for our daughter and it has really made her more aware of her spending habits. Instead of running around the store saying she wants everything, she stops now and thinks about how much she has on her card. It’s amazing. Teaching her such valuable lessons and also not driving me nuts in Target – yes! :)

This makes me SO happy to hear. It really is such an important skill to learn how to spend and save… and it will save our sanity too haha. Have a beautiful day, Sarah!

Hi and Happy Friday!
I love how big Beck is getting and he’s got such a personality and how much running has became a family affair for you all. Also, I wanted to say that I am obsessed with the Brooks bike shorts, and I think you recommended those–so thank you! You just mentioned you have a favorite jogger–I’ve been looking for one. Will you share yours?
ALSO, have you watched any of the documentaries on Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos? You should! It’s really good.
Have a great weekend!
Avery

HEY AVERY! I am SO so happy that you love the Brooks bike shorts. Okay, these joggers will change your life… here is the link:

Oh my goodness, that one was so so good. We need to have a discussion board about it! Thanks Avery, you too and keep in touch. Let me know what you think of the joggers!

OH my gosh I just watched that Lularich trailer…..I LOVE a good documentary! I can’t wait to watch that! I had a friend who sold Lularoe and it was wild. I went to her house once (years ago) and she had PILES of clothes. PILESSSSSSSS. I actually bought a super cute dress from her though. haha.
That madewell shirt is so cute. I wish we had an actual madewell store here, I loveeeeee their clothes but every time I order online I get the wrong sizes.
Have a nice weekend!

Reply

PLEASE let me know what you think about it after you watch. You’ll have to ask your friend what she thought about it too if she watches it. The piles of clothing sounds very very stressful to me. Their sizing is tricky! I feel like everything runs big for them and then every now and then they will throw in something that runs really small! Thanks Mollie, you too:)

Sorry about your foot. But I agree you did the right thing by taking a day off to make sure it’s all ok.
Oh I wish Green Light cards were around when my boys were young! What a fantastic way to teach kids about saving and spending. And I love that you’re doing it with all 3. It’s never too early to start teaching these great life skills.
Ok, those jeans are super cute!! I need to go shopping so bad. Where did you go to buy them?
A cereal I never get tires of… Frosted Mini Wheats! Love them!
Favorite thing this week… Definitely the cooler temps!
Tonight is the homecoming football game for the high school. It should be fun! Then tomorrow night is the homecoming dance. I am so happy that these events are happening again! And, I am so happy that my son is so happy to do all these events, especially since it’s his senior year!
Have a great Friday Janae ?

Reply

THANK YOU Wendy! I am really hoping I’ll be pain-free asap! We weren’t sure about getting one for Skye but you are right, it’s never too early to start teaching them. They are from Madewell, they really have the best jeans there. FMWs are the ultimate cereal. Have the absolute best time at the game and I am so happy for you guys and that everything is happening again. So many great things ahead. Thanks Wendy, I hope you do too!

Hi Janae! You ever try jump roping? My PT says it’s really good for runners. I hope your foot feels better soon! It’s definitely the smart move to take time off now. Curious to know if you felt it during your workout. I never know how hard to push it something feels off, do I stop right away or just run easier or wait for it to go away?
Happy Friday and hope you have a great weekend ahead!

Reply

AMY! I haven’t done jump roping in a very very long time. Maybe I need get started with that, thank you! So I felt it literally in the last 100m of the final interval but it didn’t seem like a big deal at all. It wasn’t enough that I felt like I should stop but then when I got out of bed the next morning I was like WOWZERSSSSSSS. It really is so tricky! And now I’m reading that resting isn’t helpful for plantar so I’m just confused?! Thanks for letting me vent to you ha. I hope you and your husband have the best weekend!

Reply

Dang! Hope you don’t have to wear the boot! My husband had plantar and the wall calf stretches first thing in the morning really helped him. Hope it’s just a one off for you and goes away soon though.

Reply

Thank you so much and I’ll do those stretches tomorrow morning! Thanks for sharing, you are the best:)

Greenlight is nice, my friend has it for her kids. Before diving into it though, check with your own bank. Most banks allow you to have a kids account with a debit card and it’s free. You can easily monitor it via the web, just like you do your own bank account. Typically it is also tied to your account so there sometimes is no minimum that has to be in the account. It’s free and the interest paid on the account would be from the bank and not parent added. My bank allows me to transfer money so I potentially could add money to my kids account. Green light of course is likely easier but I find the bank option is more realistic. There are also some great free investing apps out there with parent controlled kids options.
I have mixed feelings about debit cards at a certain age. My oldest is 14 and can completely handle a debit card and understands money. I still feel that money is a little abstract to my 10 year old so I am focusing on cash and making change, tax, etc.

Reply

I was initially interested in Greenlight, but $4.99 a month for a debit card for a kid is a ridiculously high fee- esp when you consider that’s the price for a kid doing transactions in the 5-10 dollar range.

Reply

Yes, I feel the same way. Our bank allows you to open a kid account as long as you maintain $25 in it and you can open a savings/money market which earns interest. It’s free. I do get the ease of it but I am really used to going on my account often and it honestly would be more complicated for me to add something else in my life!

Reply

Oh I totally see what you guys are saying! We talked to our bank and they said they would only do for 13 and up! What bank are you with Carrie?

Reply

We have PNC and I believe they can set it up without a parent account. But I doubt I will get my youngest an account prior to age 13. I want her to understand money and making change, etc. Though she does pet sit for our neighbor and is earning $$!

Reply

That is SO so cool that she pet sits to earn money. I love that! Also, I needed your comment about kids understanding money and making change better so I can work on that with them at the same time. Hope your day is a beautiful one!

The calf and the PF are closely related…try these two minute calf stretches a few times a day and you should see immediate results! I healed my own pretty bad case of PF about three weeks before my last marathon doing them, when nothing else had worked (time off, boot at night, taping, rolling with a ball, ice, etc). I did them 4x a day (on both legs so I wouldn’t be lopsided, lol) and had noticeable results in a day or two, completely healed in about a week.

Katie. I cannot thank you enough for helping me out with this. You are inspiring me and I will be doing them 4 x a day too. So in the article, he talks about continuing with activity… do you think the stretches + time off helped you or were you doing the stretches once you started running again after taking time off? Just wondering what I should do! SO cool that they helped you so quickly (I OWE YOU) and thanks for the reminder to do them on both sides! Hope you are having a great day!

I love rice Chex, I could eat that every day. I do like adding fruit to it but that isn’t necessary. During this training cycle, I have had a difficult time with my left foot and an old fracture site in my left shin. I am working with a great group of athletic trainers that are keeping me in good shape for my race and I will be taking some time off after to get things back to normal. I do a lot of resistance band work on my lower body strength training days. There are many good and cheap options on amazon and they are amazing.

Rice Chex is so so good. I will be picking up a box of that when I am at the store next.
I am so sorry that your left foot/shin is acting up. SO happy that you have an awesome group of athletic trainers that will get you to your race. I have never seen fabric bands… I had a band snap on me last week so these seem like an awesome solution. Thanks for the help, keep me updated on how you are doing and way to go rocking the strength training during training. I hope you have some pain-free few weeks of training and race. Thanks Megan!

Ezekiel sprouted crunchy cereal in Original and Flakes. Also rice puffs -> surprise the toasty scent stays with them, and you’re transported to a table with all the good breakfast foods. It’s nutritious and an EXPERIENCE!!!

Hearting the strength training pics. You’re doing some work there, especially with the rowing machine. Keep it up!

Reply

FYI, I have the original, flakes & rice puffs in the same bowl. I add some other items, too. It’s good to up the protein. Making it is like prepping a trifle!

I also have those madewell jeans. I like them but you must try these:

Obsessed with them. I grab them over everything including my leggings / athleisure clothes.

Reply

Andrew is going to be mad at you hahaah… off to get them. Are they true to size or did you size down in them???
Plus, they are on sale.
Have the best day April!

Reply

I would definitely size down. I find they run a little bigger than the vintage ones you posted but with less stretch if that make sense?? I loved them so much I bought two (one sized down and then one two sizes down) so I have the relaxed fit and then a fitted fit. Love them both but wear the tighter ones for like a date night and the looser ones for the day… My husband calls them mom jeans and I said I get why moms wear them perfect for chasing kids… Also if you are an insider, I believe you get 25% off right now.

Reply

These legit are the best jeans in the world. I cannot believe how comfortable they are. Thank you x a million for sharing these with me! Hope you have a fabulous weekend, April!

Hi Janae! I’m so sorry about your foot! I have PF issues too and they can get out of hand FAST. My newest and most problematic injury/condition is Morton’s neuroma. I saw the podiatrist, had a cortizone shot, and followed all of his recommendations, but the pain came back after a few months. He also gave me the ‘running is bad for your knees and joints’ lecture which makes me think I need to find a doc with a sports concentration. As far as cereal, my guilty pleasure is Peanut Butter Chex. I keep them as a treat and I don’t even need milk. I love that you’re teaching your kids about money and wish something like that was available when my kids were small. Heck, I wish there was something like that when I was growing up! Have a great day!

Reply

So sorry to hear about your injury. Rest up and take care of yourself! I’ve seen the trailer for LulaRich and want to watch it, just haven’t found the time! As for cereals I will never get sick of, I have to say Reese’s cereal is up there, along with Cinnamon Life and Cinnamon Toast Crunch; cereal might be my love language! ;) Have a great weekend!
