Summer Schedule? + I Signed up for Another Race!

My niece will make a lot of my running possible this summer.  I’m very thankful for her because my kids adore her and she is always excited to come over and babysit.

I met up with Emilee for 6.14 miles @ an 8:19 pace.  Her marathon is on Saturday, and I cannot wait to see what she does!  I’ll finish the 10k and then be able to cheer on all of my friends racing the half-marathon and full-marathon.  It’s going to feel like a party!

PS it is just crazy to me that I’ve been blogging since the above niece was this age!

We’ve been introducing more solids into Beck’s eating (he is in love with eggs), and it is helping him to sleep so much longer at night.  He slept 12 hours straight wahoo.

All of the summer activities are starting up over here!  The girls were very excited to make popsicles yesterday.  We have these popsicle molds, and we love them!

Skye is so happy to have Brooke home all day now.

IMG 4755

We spent a lot of time outside too.

I was very excited to recreate a sandwich that I had in St. George from Crimson Corner Cafe.  Sourdough bread, bacon, guacamole, Colby-jack cheese, and a tomato on the panini maker.

The key to a good grilled cheese is melting the cheese a bit on the bread in the microwave before grilling it.  We added the other toppings after we microwaved the cheese on the bread.

Not pretty but SO ridiculously good.

Finished off the night with a walk with Andrew.

I couldn’t stop thinking about the St. George Marathon when we were there this last weekend.  As much as I would love to marathon train this summer, it just doesn’t feel like the right time, BUT I am thrilled to run their mini-marathon (13.1 miles)!  It’s the first year they are doing a half on the same day as the marathon!

I. Am. So. Excited.

I love summer with all of my heart, BUT I also love having some sort of schedule at home with all of my heart, ha.  Andrew and I are trying to figure out the schedule that works for our family, and I’d love to hear what other parents are doing with their kids during this time of year.

So far, we have this schedule for the kids before we play with friends or go out and do things.  For the math portion Skye will just color.

Does your schedule change at all in the summer?  What is your schedule looking like these days?

Any other grilled cheese or panini additions/toppings recommendations?

Have a favorite brand/flavor of popsicle?  What about homemade popsicle favorites?

Have any nieces and nephews?  How many?

Okay, so this is incredibly random, but my friend’s sister is having a baby girl and naming her Janae!! I’m going to the baby shower on Saturday and may or may not tell her sister that her baby is destined to be an amazing runner haha

Reply

NO WAY! Oh that makes me so so happy! I rarely hear about other people with my name:). Have the best time at the shower and an amazing day! Thanks Clare.

What a cute summer schedule! My schedule doesn’t really change, but I imagine for people with kids it does a lot. I have 3 nieces, they are 6, 4 and 2. I do not know how the oldest is almost 7 too, can’t believe it’s been 7 years since she was born! Time flies.

Time really does fly! How fun to have three nieces, I bet they love you so much. Have a great day, Mariah!

I agree, a written schedule makes the days at home go much more smoothly for us. I signed Allie up for a bunch of day camps this summer!! We’ve been doing virtual school since Christmas pretty much (we went back for a few weeks then closed again) so it will be really nice for her to play in some groups again!
I have 2 siblings and Daniel has three siblings, between them all we have eight nephews and only one niece! We are a boy heavy family. I’m just happy there is at least one girl for Allie!! And maybe this baby will be a girl too. We will see!! 29 weeks!!

Following these comments for schedules! We need some around here or the days get interesting! We will spend tons of time at the pool And hitting up all the icecream places but will need some morning routines! Happy summer!

Reply

Happy summer to you Jenn! Let me know what type of summer schedule you guys come up with and we will have to copy you with hitting up all of the ice cream places. Have a beautiful day!

I am so glad that Allie will be able to do a lot of day camps this summer! She is going to love being with friends again. Any word on school in the fall if things will be open? It is the best to be surprised, I can’t wait to find out what you are having! You are getting so close. I hope you have a fabulous day Andrea (and maybe a nap too:)!

Are we taking a poll of who thinks you will “accidentally” run the marathon course come race day?
Excited to watch you train!

Hahaha I just don’t know which I would vote for;). Thanks Molly, have the best day!

Summer has transitioned from me rushing to take my kids to daycare everyday (and footing that bill – yikes!) to having them at home all day and struggling to get them to do much of anything other than play on their phones. They are 10 and 14. I try to assign them something to do each day, and they are to practice the piano. It’s hard to police what they do when my husband and I are at work. My youngest plays soccer and is signed up for a day camp, and my oldest has joined cross-country which I am super excited about! I was a 4-H kid and showed cattle growing up, so my summers were always filled with working on my animals. I also read a lot as a kid, and I read to my kids a lot when they were little, but they both don’t read much on their own :( :( I really hope that changes one day and they discover the joy and magic of reading!

Reply

Amanda, that is really tough! That is so exciting about your oldest being on the cross-country team, you will have to keep me updated on that! You just reminded me about 4-H! I loved 4-H! Maybe this will be the summer they fall in love with reading:). I’m with you, nothing is better than a good book. I hope you are having a great day at work today!

Hey Janae!
Now that my girls are older—12 and 15—we don’t need a summer schedule so much, but when they were younger, we did! For a few years, I went ALL OUT, doing themed weeks complete with cooking/field trips/etc. and then I completely burned out of doing that and didn’t want to plan anything. So, lesson is not to be too overly ambitious with the schedule. lol My oldest is signed up for a conditioning program at the gym 3 mornings a week, so that will get her (and my!) butt out of bed by 7:00 3 days a week. She was all for signing up for this……..hopefully it won’t be a struggle to pull her out of bed. lol

And, SKYE LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE YOUR NIECE IN THAT FIRST PICTURE!!!!!!!!! It is crazy how much your kiddos resemble their cousins!!!

My fav sandwich at my fav cafe lately has been turkey/honey mustard/cheese (and bacon, but I omit that) on a pretzel roll, grilled. I’m also a big fan of a Caprese sandwich/flatbread!!!!!

Only 3 half days of school left after today!!!!!!!! Woo hoo! We’re getting there!!!! :)

Reply

Hey YOU! Happy birthday month and I totally agree with you about Skye and my niece… they do look so alike. Ummm that pretzel roll sandwich sounds way too good. I feel like I learn that same lesson over and over again in my life ha. That is so exciting for your oldest and I’m hoping that she will get used to getting up early for it quickly:). Enjoy those last three days of school.

Our schedule doesn’t change a lot during the summer except we try to get a lot of our outside playing done early while it’s still relatively cool. Just curious when did you start Beck on solids? My littlest is 6 months tomorrow. She seems very interested in what we are eating.

Reply

Hey Megan! Happy 6 months to your little girl tomorrow. Beck was acting super interested in food then too. I started with rice cereal at 6 months and then started introducing mashed up avocado, sweet potato and banana. About a week ago (so 6.75 months) we started a few more things like eggs, chicken and little specks of bread. He is loving it and sleeping SO good now because he isn’t hungry in the middle of the night. Let me know how it goes for you and enjoy those morning outdoor times!

Green apples are my favorite addition to grilled cheese! Grilled brie on a baguette with apples and sprouts was my go to for picnic sandwiches. Delish!

And now I need to go to the store right this second to grab those ingredients… thanks for sharing, sounds delicious! Have a beautiful day, Katrina!

I was just thinking that we needed to get started on a summer schedule soon! We have been fighting a nasty cold (negative covid test thankfully) so I have been letting the kids sleep in and have lazy mornings. We also have been avoiding playgrounds and playdates because we don’t want to spread our germs to anyone else. Now that we are almost better it’s time to figure it out!

I don’t have any nieces or nephews and it makes me sad luckily we have some cousins with kiddos but it’s not quite the same.

Reply

I am so glad you don’t have covid but bummer you guys have not been feeling well! I hope you are 100% soon. Let me know what you guys figure out for your summer schedule. That is hard… do you think there will be in the future? I hope your day is a beautiful one, Beth!

The summer we met up in park city I had the best grilled cheese of cheese, avocado, and tomato. I hardly make it any other way now. Hope of course loves the grilled cheese and jelly route this blog also introduced us to.

Summer schedule……..we always find it, right? Sometimes it just take a couple week transition to know what will be BEST for everyone involved!

Reply

So how about we meet there this summer for another grilled cheese?! It just made me smile so big to read that Hope loves the jelly on her grilled cheese summer. Happy summer for you… is school done?!

My schedule is basically the same year round, and I am not complaining! I don’t have kids, so I enjoy getting up whenever I want on my days off and running or getting coffee, or taking my camp chair to a pretty downtown spot to read.

I did my 8k on Memorial day and I beat my time from 2019 by a full minute! More impressive though was my husband’s coworker who finished 3rd female with 6 minute miles on a HILLY course. And the winner………..he ran the 5 miles in 24 minutes and some change…….sub 5 minute pace………….broke the course record set in 1983! This is the 54th year of this race, and the community showed up ready to have a good time. We cheered on the mile racers, too. (The 8k winner also won the mile race, sub 5, he’s training for the Olympics, so yeah!). It’s really funny to cheer on kids who don’t know you……………they either pick up their pace because of your cheering, or they look at you like “who the heck are you?!”.

This race was much needed. The past 2 weeks have been a roller coaster………….my mom’s birthday, then my family goes on vacation, then my dad passed away while on vacation, family comes back at end of vacation, 2 days later my dad’s birthday, then a few days later my youngest sibling/brother graduated high school. I was happy to have this race to help heal. Running is really a big help with things you feel you can’t control. And I couldn’t have asked for a better race, weather, or outcome.

Have a fun week!

Loribeth, my heart is broken for you. I am so incredibly sorry that you lost your father. Are you doing okay?

Reply

Yep! I am totally making that sandwich!!
I am so excited for you to do the half in St. George! I am so tempted to join you, but I’m already running a half Sept. 11. And ha ha… I love the reader who asked if we should take a poll on whether or not you’ll accidentally run the full ?
When my boys were younger, we had weekly schedules… Tuesday was the library, Wednesdays were beach days, etc. Then during each day, not always at the same time, they would read, pick up dog poop, and a few other chores. I do like schedules, but also love the freedom of not being so scheduled. I think your schedule looks perfect!
Yay for Beck sleeping 12 hours!! Food definitely makes a difference.
And so exciting to see all the race cones, signs, stuff!! I’m excited for you on Saturday ?

I mean… if you do choose to do St. George, I would love to meet you! Hahah Mollie knows me too well, it made me laugh so hard. Totally going to copy you on themed days like the library, thank you for sharing. YAY YAY YAY a race wahooo! Thanks friend, I am so excited too. Have a fabulous day!

My favorite panini is ham, swiss, grilled pineapple, and roasted red peppers on sourdough. We get them at a little shop on our way to the lake and they are so good!

My kids love homemade “ladybug” popsicles, vanilla yogurt and frozen strawberries blended up and then we add chocolate chips before they freeze so they look like ladybugs!

I love this idea for ladybug popsicles, we will be copying you! THANK YOU! And now I need that panini too:). Have a beautiful day friend.

Ok – if you don’t listen to the Lazy genius podcast (she also has a book which is awesome) you have to check her out. Her last few episodes were about structuring summer in her ‘lazy genius’ method. Which is being lazy about stuff you don’t care about and a genius about what you do care about. I have found her podcasts so so good. How to meal plan but in a super low key way. You don’t care about doing x, well don’t do it….etc etc.
She has a ‘hack’ around deciding what gifts to get kids – maybe books, puzzles, – and every birthday gift your kids go to is getting that gift. Don’t waste hours searching for the ‘perfect gift’ for a 5 year old.

Anyway, check her summer posts out. Super helpful xx

Our summer usually looks the same since our daughter goes to daycare in the summer too. However we just had our 2nd on the 22nd and thankfully I work for a company that gives 16 weeks for maternity leave. My first will still be in daycare/preschool this summer. Last year with COVID we were out of daycare from March to August and it was quite a rough transition going back. So we are keeping her schedule the same. But we plan to do some family lunches every week with her and my husband so that will be fun!
I actually don’t like cheese… but I do love a good veggie panini! Usually something with roasted zucchini, squash, roasted red pepper red onion and eggplant with hummus!
I have 4 nephews and 1 niece. My niece and oldest nephew are from my older (half) brother who’s 10 yrs older than me, so my niece is 14 and my nephew is almost 12! Which I cannot believe by my niece was also born at the beginning of my senior year of college and I refuse to believe it was 14 years ago…
I make popsicles for my daughter all of the time, but they are more like healthy smoothie popsicles that she helps me make. Milk, frozen banana, strawberries, raspberries, cauliflower and spinach! She loves them and thinks they are a treat!

As an elementary math teacher, I have to say Skye is at a great age for the Bedtime Math app https://bedtimemath.org/what-we-do/apps/ The idea is to make doing math as routine as a bedtime story. I love this app and love sharing it with families. It’s a great way to make thinking about math easy for the parents and the kids.
