What shoes to wear for what run + I just have to brag a bit.

I just have to brag for a minute.  Emilee took FIRST PLACE FEMALE at her half-marathon on Saturday.  She ran a 1:20:05 and this is mid marathon training where she is logging 90 mile weeks with a lot of workouts too.  I am so excited for her marathon in June, I cannot wait to see what she does and I feel so lucky to get to run with her on her easy runs or chase (way behind her:) in her workouts right now.

This was her first race since we did CIM 1.5 years ago, it’s so nice to see these things happen again!

I get a few questions about how I manage breastfeeding with running right now… I always feed Beck right before I leave.  Sometimes he eats a lot and sometimes he just wants a light snack but I always feed him before I leave.  If I am running early then I’ll wake him up to eat before I leave and he goes right back to sleep afterwards.  As we start to introduce more food to him it will be interesting to see how much he will nurse.  We are almost past the point when I stopped breastfeeding Skye so this will be all new territory for me this time.

Andrew took the kids to school and I was off to meet Emilee for a run.

10 miles @ 8:18 pace with two stops for our water cooler talk haha.

Skye came outside (w/Andrew) the second she saw me run up and we went straight to Elsa/Animal/Sprit playing.

Multitasking while we play… R8 Roll Recovery (this thing is cruel when you are tight and my hamstrings are tight right now) with my favorite way to stay hydrated that I use every. single. day.—> the Piña Colada flavor tastes like a treat and it offers 2-3x more hydration than water alone!  Code HUNGRYRUNNERGIRL can get you 25% off your purchase HERE.  I seriously love this stuff.

KodiakCakes with bananas on top a few minutes later.

Did they match yesterday on purpose or on accident?!

After Brooke was done with school we went to a nursery to look at some things to add to our front porch.

We took advantage of the free kid’s meals offered on Monday’s at Zao Cafe again.  I love this rice bowl so very much.

And then we all had some cereal for dessert at the counter.

Did you see the good news… Des will be racing Boston this October!

Sarah asked if I could do a post on my Brooks shoes and what I use each shoe for!  She also asked if I sometimes change shoes after the warm-up to make them last longer so let’s go ahead and dive into this topic because I could talk for years about it:).

Let’s start on the left and move to the right!  I wear neutral running shoes.  PS clearly I like black shoes!

The Hyperion!  They still have some sizes of this shoe available but they are no longer making them anymore.  Luckily, I have a bunch in storage ha because I love these shoes so much.  These are the shoes I have worn for all of my PRs in the past up to the marathon.  I love them.  As I am getting older I am noticing that I need a bit more shoe/support for longer runs/workouts.  As of right now I mostly use them for workouts like mile repeats… short and FAST.  These shoes have a big place in my heart.

Hyperion Elite!  These are what I will race in now.  They are so incredibly light which helps to waste less energy which keeps you from fatigue longer and running more efficiently.  It has a carbon propulsion plate which gives you a faster toe-off.  It also ‘keeps you running in your preferred motion path, allowing you to save energy and run faster for longer.  I cannot wait to see what I race in with these when I am going for new PRs!

Hyperion Tempo!  These are my goto now for longer tempos/workouts.  It’s crazy how light they are but they offer me a bit more cushioning for the longer effort that I need.  They have a wider forefront which gives a bit more support and reduces deviation.   Brooks made the tempo to train in and then you race in the elite.

Launch 8!  I love to use these on days where I’m looking for a light shoe and I’m thinking I’ll be running a bit faster than my easy pace.  I’ve also used them for tempos and they work great.  They give you a fast feel but they aren’t something I would race in or do short intervals in personally!

Levitate 4!  I don’t wear these ones very much but I love to grab them for when I feel like my body needs an extra spring.. they are a bit bouncy.   I have worn them for long workouts like 3 x 3 miles too and they do awesome.

Ghosts 13!  I’ve told you a few times but these are just my favorite trainers and I wear these more than any other shoe.  The amount of comfort that is packed into these shoes is unreal.  I have done some speed in them but that was more on accident but they worked well for that too but I wouldn’t normally choose them for speed.  I love wearing these on my easy/recovery days and just want to wear them all day long.  My full love letter about them is here.

Glycerin 19!  These are what I use when my legs feel trashed and I need every bit of help possible with recovery.  I use them when I just need to feel like I’m running on clouds.

Cascadia/Caldera are my favorite trail shoes!  I love having a bit more stability so I don’t roll an ankle and rock plates so I don’t feel every little thing underneath me.  BUT I don’t always wear trail shoes on my trail runs.  It depends on how technical the trail is and if it is pretty low-key than I usually just wear the launch or ghosts.

When I am doing a speed workout I LOVE to warm-up and cool-down in a different shoe than I do the intervals in.  Every now and then it just doesn’t work to change shoes so I wear my speed shoes for the entire run but if I can, I absolutely switch shoes.  Sometimes I’ll do the warm-up near my house and then go home and switch into my speed shoes and finish the speed at my house to switch into my other shoes again.  I’ve also dropped off my speed shoes at the spot where I know I’m going to start the speed too and then I pick up my warm-up shoes afterwards.  Doing this is super easy if you are doing a workout at a track because you have your bag of stuff right there.  It saves the wear and tear on your speed shoes and I LOVE what Kim says about this… It signals the brain to run fast!

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions… I’m loving making blog posts around your questions!

Plants—> are you good at keeping them alive or not so much?

-I don’t know if it is possible for me to keep a plant alive but Brooke is helping me with these new ones so they will survive:)

I’d love to hear how you choose what shoes to wear for different days?!  Do you love trying new shoes or do you stick to the ones you love?  How often do you get new running shoes?

Coupons/offers at restaurants… are you all about them or not so much?

-My sister kills it at coupons/offers and I learned from her to always use them:)

Any questions you want me to make a blog post about?

There are so many different Brookes it’s overwhelming, but this is such a great post! I only have the Ghosts 13 that I’ve been using for work. They have been great for my 12 hr shifts. After my long shifts my back and feet hurt so bad but not since wearing the ghosts. I wanted to invest in another pair for running but wasn’t sure which ones so this is super helpful :)

I know a lot of people that love the Ghosts for 12 hour shifts and I’m so glad they have helped your body feel it’s best afterwards. You’ll have to let me know which ones you get for running and your thoughts. Have a beautiful day Ashlea!

I am not good with plants either! I kill them all somehow. Wish I was better!

I don’t switch shoes but thinking I should start! I like the idea of training your mind to know when it is time to run fast and when to run easy with the shoes haha. I wear Launch all the time, but maybe some lighter ones for speed and more supportive for really easy days would be good.

Hey!! Let me know if you end up trying out some lighter shoes for speed and more support for easy days. I love hearing what people do. Have the best day Mariah with all that you are doing and maybe someday we can keep plants alive.

Beck, sitting at the counter like one of the big kids ?. So cute!
I don’t switch shoes for different workouts, but I always rotate shoes, never running in the same pair 2 days in a row. I have mild pronation, with a higher arch, so I am a bit picky when it comes to my shoes. I love to find a supportive shoe that still feels light. I feel like I’m still searching for the perfect shoe. I found a pair that I absolutely loved, then of course they stopped making them… I hate when shoe companies do that.
My husband is like your sister… He is the master at finding deals/discounts/coupons. I think I’m just to lazy or in too much of a hurry to look… Ha!
Have a good Tuesday!

HEY WENDY! Rotating shoes is so so important. I totally agree, it breaks my heart when shoes that we love either get changed a lot or stop being made! You’ll have to keep me updated on your shoe hunt for the perfect ones. I’m with you and most of the time I’m just too lazy to find the deal but if I have a coupon, I WILL use it. Thank you so much Wendy and I hope you have a great Tuesday too!

Oh… And I forgot to say, congratulations to Emilee!! That is amazing! Hugs and high fives!!

VERY different question…but what’s the plant that Skye is posing in front of in the nursery pic? We have a bunch coming up in our yard and I assumed they’re weeds. Do you know what they are? I’m worried I pulled up a bunch of flowering bushes or something!!! THANKS!

HEY AMANDA! I am not sure but we are going back this week so I’ll take a picture of it with the name so I can send it to you. I have done that before too and Andrew was like what in the world did you do haha. Have a beautiful day friend.

I used to be able to wear any shoe without issue, super neutral foot and nothing bothered me. I only used Brooks for a long time. I had a heel stress fracture and then all of sudden, my feet hate shoes… After my virtual marathon (this weekend!), I want to incorporate more speed work and I also want to add in a race walking day too! I have my racewalking shoes but I can’t run in them. Racewalking requires a flexible shoe. I currently use the Ricochet for my speed work and I will run my virtual marathon with the ghosts. I have Mach 4s and I am thinking of trying them for some speed work, they are a well loved shoe but they just don’t feel great to me past 10 miles. My husband is funny though, I suggested that he get different shoes for biking riding and he said “why would anyone need more then one sneaker”… He either rides in sandals (why???) or his all leather white Nikes (also why??). Granted he only rides about 3 months out of the year.
I know you won’t have a post in time for my weekend marathon but can you do a post on pivoted to a virtual race or changing plans? Lots of races are still not happening and even some are being postponed which is hard to change your plans. Also maybe even in that post, ask comments for favorite training plans??

CARRIE! GOOD LUCK THIS WEEKEND! Please please please let me know how it goes. Hahah your husbands response made me laugh. I am so sorry that your feet have been so upset by shoes after your heel stress fracture, that must be so frustrating! You’ll have to let me know what you think of the Mach for speed! LOVE LOVE LOVE these questions, and I would love to hear other’s responses too! Such an interesting time we are living in when so many things are canceled and postponed! Expect it soon. Thanks so much Carrie and I hope your day is a beautiful one.

Hi Janae! Love the shoe post! I currently just use one shoe for everything but I have multiple of that shoe and wear the older ones for trails and newer ones for speed. I really like the Garmin feature for tracking miles on the shoe. Sometimes I think I should rotate the shoes more and not wear them back to back days though. I’ve read mixed opinions about that, what do you think?
Have a great day!

Reply

Hey Amy! I need to try that Garmin feature out for the mileage tracking, such a great idea. I have heard from a lot of people that it is a good idea to rotate the shoes you are running in! I do that with my Ghosts because I wear the Ghosts so often! Let me know what you end up doing. Thank you and I hope you have a beautiful day!

Congratulations to Emilee!!! You ladies are so inspiring!

Thank you for your show review! I currently run in Ghosts and love them, but I’m looking for another shoe to train in, too. I’m curious how your feet and legs do when you race marathons in something with less support like the Hyperions after doing long runs in a shoe with more. I did a quick switch to minimalist running shoes from supportive Asics (after reading “Born to Run”), which of course is not recommended. ☺️ I’m thinking racing a marathon in something with less support would feel like that with the feet and legs taking a beating. Is this accurate?
Thanks for your great blog, Janae! I love reading it everyday!

Reply

Kelly, thank you for your comment… it means the world to me! Great question… so when I used to race in the old version of the Hyperion I did all of my speed work in them along with some of my long runs so the transition made it easier! But I absolutely agree, switching to a shoe with less support for a marathon after training in shoes with more support would definitely beat my body up! I would get in some good training in what you are going to race in! WIth the new Hyperion Tempo and Hyperion Elite they are pretty similar in support so I don’t think it will be a problem to train in one and race in the other if that makes sense!

Reply

PS PLEASE let me know what you end up trying, I would love to know! Have a great day!

Reply

Thank you for answering my question, Janae! That makes perfect sense—I didn’t realize that you did long runs in the Hyperions, too. I’ll let you know what I end up trying.
Thanks again for sharing your running wisdom with me! I have learned so much from you about the sport over the years and have even gotten my husband hooked on reading it. ?

Oh that is awesome! Thank you friend and have a beautiful day!

Brooks Ghosts are my everyday trainers – love, love, love them! I also wear Brooks Adrenaline, usually for my long runs – partly because I think feet/ankles/legs do better with shoe switch-ups throughout the week and partly because the little bit of extra support helps prevent my ankle tendonitis from flaring up on really long runs when form gets a little tired/sloppy (they are my go to shoe for 15 miles and longer). I am excited to try the new Glycerine GTS line that just came out…I’ve never worn the regular Glycerin because I don’t need that much cushioning except for long runs and they didn’t have the little extra support of the Adrenaline that I needed more…but now the Glycerin GTS has both (or so my local running store guy says).

Reply

I love hearing from other Ghosts obsessed people. The adrenaline are awesome and I am SO happy to hear that the extra support helps with your tendonitis. Let me know what you think of the new Glycerin GTS… not much better than trying out a new shoe that sounds perfect for what you need! Have a beautiful day R!

Yay Emilee! She is Awesomesauce!!

Did you see Chepngetich broke the women’s world record for the half marathon back on April 4th!?

Also, a mountain biking question: Do you/Andrew ever watch extreme mt. biking vids on youtube? My kids & I love watching them together, even though it makes my feet sweat to think about biking down a huge mountain. Danny Macaskill’s videos are some of our faves & we think your kids would love his “Danny Daycare” video (link below).

Hi Janae! Thanks for the Liquid IV discount code! I live in the deep south and Liquid IV seems to be the best thing to help me stay hydrated while running outdoors in the heat. Also, your code gave 25% off, so even better!

AH thank you for finding my typo! YES, 25% off wahoo. I am so glad you love it and that it helps you so much… you are amazing for running through your heat and humidity. I don’t know how you do it. You’ll have to let me know your favorite flavors. Have a beautiful day Lila!

I love coupons for restaurants!! I feel like they aren’t doing it as much in my area (Ohio) as much now ever since COVID but who doesn’t love saving money lol?! Olive Garden used to send out $1 kids coupon emails and I really miss those! Hopefully when things start getting more normal they will start them up again! I do have a question, not sure if it would be enough for a blog post, but the “ It’s rude to count people as you pass them” quote, just wondering if that was from a personal experience or if it happened to someone you know? Just wondered the story behind that haha!

Reply

HEY KATIE! $1 kid’s meal at olive garden… WE NEED that coupon. My kids would love that. That’s a great question ha… so when I first started blogging 10+ years ago I googled running phrases and that one popped up. I put it on my blog design and then a few years later changed my blog design and now I have a question… where does it pop up for you on my blog?

Reply

I always get to your blog through google, when it pops up it says The Hungry Runner Girl | It’s rude to count people as you pass them. I just double checked to make sure and it still comes up haha! Thanks for answering!

You are the best for letting me know! THANK YOU!

I had wondered the same thing haha

Wow thanks so much Janae. This is so useful – think this is a post I’ll keep coming back to everytime I need (want :) ) new shoes! Have a LIST of Brooks now that I want to try – was a bit overwhelmed before I read this and didn’t know where to start with them.
Love the Beck and breastfeeding updates also – I have a 9m still feeding so it’s great hearing how you fit it all in too.

Hello!! First of all, BIG congrats to Emilee – how awesome for her!!
I am actually pretty good with most plants. In my office (a vague memory since COVID), my co-workers would bring me their half dead ones to bring back to life. I have a 100% success rate so far ;o) We have a couple of new flowerbeds in our front yard this year, so I am pretty excited to get them planned and get planting!
Thanks so much for the Brooks post! I am a recent convert (Glycerin) after being a diehard Saucony runner for years. So far, I love them! I don’t switch up my shoes for different types of workouts, but I do rotate between a couple of pairs at a time and do use trail shoes when I run those. I usually get new shoes when I start feeling discomfort in my joints (probably wait too long) and it drives me bonkers when companies change up a model or stop making it altogether.
Restaurant coupons are the best, but I am not great at remembering to look for them or use them. We probably end up using Groupon deals the most. We go to a couple of places that have special/theme nights, like Mexican Monday or pasta night, and get some deals that way. Either way, now I’m hungry – LOL! Hope you are having a terrific day!!

Congrats to your friend Emilee! Maybe she could do a guest post sometime! I also really appreciate hearing about your breastfeeding journey and how you fit it into your days. I have a 3 month old (first time mom) and breastfeeding is WAY harder than I thought, but I’m trying my best. I have been slowly getting back into running and working out again and struggle a little with “my body bouncing back” or getting down on myself for not hitting the same paces or being able to have the same intense workouts I used to. Have you ever gone through this postpartum? Thanks so much and I love your blog :)

Congrats Emilee! ?

I’m not sure of a question exactly…but would love to see more posts about motherhood. Your schedule or how you handle having 4 kids with (seemingly) such ease. And how you also fit running into all that (I know you run in mornings mostly, but I’m sure there are sacrifices and scheduling humps to overcome). I admire that you take time for yourself each day…the idea of model motherhood rather than martyr motherhood. :) Also your positivity about it all! I’m not a mom yet, but hope to be soonish. I feel like so many people complain about parenthood, but I never get that sense from you. You seem to really love it! I just want to know it all haha:)

Reply

HEY ALYSSA! 100% absolutely I will put a post together about this! Expect it next week and please keep me updated on what you said about ‘soonish’… that makes me so happy! Hope you are having a beautiful day!

I love all of your sunglasses!
What’s the secret to finding pina colada flavored liquid IV? Do I always just keep missing it? I always look for it, & wind up getting watermelon (which is also good!) when I can’t find it.
