I have to win this race.

8.16 miles @ 8:26 average with Emilee.  She had a 100 mile week last week!!  I am just so amazed by what she is doing and how hard she works for her goals.  Maybe I’ll have to join her in a 100 mile week next year?!  <— that would be a fun goal.

I’m switching up my training for a bit;) This last weekend my brother (you can read his post here) asked me if I thought there were any distances that he could beat me.  I was being a little overconfident and said that I could even beat him in the 100m;)  Now I’m in trouble because he ran track and is pretty fast for the short stuff and I am NOT… but I just have to win this race so I’m going to need any tips or pointers I can get because I’m a marathon runner, not a 100m runner ha.  My brother did agree that I could do a 3 mile w/u on the track and just go straight into the race without stopping after the warm/up so I can gradually accelerate (there is NO chance of me going from stopped to sprinting… so he will be at the start line and start as soon as I get up to the line).

We will definitely film this because I think it will be quite comical.

PS it’s his birthday today!  His name is Dave just in case you ever see him at the airport or he is your Southwest pilot.  He told me it makes his coworkers think he is cool if people that have seen him on my blog talk to him so please do if you ever see him.

Skye’s outfit of the day.

It’s so funny to me how different each kid comes.  Brooke still prefers me to pick out her clothes each day and she could care less about what she is wearing as long as she isn’t hot or scratchy in them but Skye wants to put together quite the outfits each day.

Just a chill morning over here.

For lunch we went out to celebrate our 5 year dating anniversary.  We went to Kneader’s and I had one of their perfect paninis and we shared some brownie cheesecake.

It was so romantic.

And full of spills….

It was a rainy day in our area…

So soup was an absolute must for dinner.  I made Megan’s soup (we add an extra can of tomato soup) along with Megan’s banana bread… my kid’s are very appreciative of her yummy recipes.

This is going to be delicious this morning before my run (and after too).

And then everyone was in pjs by 6 pm…. Just the way we like it.

Cheesecake is delicious! I haven’t had it in so long but now I want it.

I’m with Brooke currently on my clothing choices. Since we’re still working at home, I just throw on leggings and a comfy T shirt. But if I go out then I like to wear jeans and a cute top because I like to look cute!! Comfort is key though regardless of the type of clothing I’m wearing.

I think you need some cheesecake in your life asap! COMFORT IS KEY–> AMEN! That is how I choose what to wear too haha. Have the best day, Maureen!

Cheesecake=yes. Hard yes. I love banana cheesecake, or reese’s peanut butter cup!

I’ve never run a spring race before, but I have swum them . . . my advice is to just GO and not think! It’ll be over so fast, so your energy should be all about turnover and moving forward. And have fun! That’s important, too!

I occasionally like shopping, but mostly I would just like someone to tell me exactly what to buy! I don’t enjoy trying lots of things on!

Reply

Banana cheesecake?! I have never tried that! I agree on reese’s pb cup cheesecake! So so true… just go and focus on turnover! I’m with you, I love it when Andrew just tells me exactly what to buy. Decisions are too hard ha. Have the best day and I hope you get some cheesecake soon. Thanks Kristin!

Good luck in your race!! Do some dynamic stretches before running to help your body warm up too.

I wish I had a personal shopper! I’m not that great at shopping. But I’d need someone who knows me well because I haven’t had a ton of luck with things like Stitch Fix.

Reply

Such a good point on the dynamic stretches! Thanks Mariah and seriously a personal shopper would be heaven! Have a beautiful day friend!

I was a sprinter!!!!! (Kind of, 400 and 800 in HS, I anchored our teams 4×4 at state! And my coach made me run the 200 a lot).
GLUTES GLUTES GLUTES that’s where the power comes from. Engage your glutes, lean into the track and get up on your toes! YOU’VE GOT THIS!!!!

Reply

THANK YOU MOLLIE! This is just what I needed! I didn’t know you were a sprinter… it has sure paid off in your distance running too! Have a beautiful day and thank you:)

Dave has such a nice genuine smiles, I hope I do meet him someday. Happy Birthday Dave!!

I ran track a couple years in HS, 200 was the shortest. I have no advice, I wasn’t that great. Good luck!!

Reply

He really does. It is so inviting and just makes everyone around him smile too. The 200 sounds so incredibly painful ha! Why is running for miles easier for us than these short sprints?! Thanks friend and I hope you have a great day!

Reply

How have I never known that I share a birthday with your brother? Happy birthday, Dave! We’ll be on Southwest Airlines this Saturday from Charleston to Nashville to LAX, hope to see you there!

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATHY! I hope you have the best time and he is working this weekend so hopefully!! I’ll eat some cake to celebrate you today!

I think most people in the world could beat me in a 100m race, so I have no advice. But I can’t wait to see the video!
It’s funny how kids are so different. My son couldn’t have cared less what he wore (it never would have occurred to him to pick out his own outfit) but my daughter is just like Skye (actually, they’re alike in many ways!) Having more than one kid makes you realize how much they’re born being who they are.
My birthday advice to Dave: better get training, my friend. You have a formidable opponent!

Reply

Hahah that is how I feel, the 100 is NOT my strength! I wish we could get your daughter and Skye together, I think they would have so much fun. I TOTALLY agree with you… they just come here with so much of who they are! I love your bday advice, he will be reading these today so thank you;). Have a beautiful day, Jenny!

We fly Southwest a lot, so I always look for your brother! Haven’t seen him yet though. Happy Birthday HRG brother Dave!!
Skye cracks me up! But my boys were just like your girls…. Oldest would let me pick out his clothes for a long time, youngest didn’t want my help at all. The combination of patterns (camo with stripes, etc) were very entertaining! Ha ha
I love cheesecake! I use to make cheesecakes often too. I even won $100 once, in a Thanksgiving bake-off with a chocolate almond cheesecake. Delicious.
I can’t wait to see this race! I think a good mile at least warm-up is what you’ll need. When is this happening? We’re all cheering for you ?

Reply

One day it is going to happen and he will be your pilot! That is so funny how these kiddos come to us and how different they can be from each other. Okay, I need to come over for your cheesecake! YOU WON the bake off, you are amazing! Hahah I think it will happen as soon as I feel really fit again but I think my brother wants to do it next month! Thank you! Have a really great day friend!

I ran 110m Intermediate hurdles, 200m, and 400m in high school. Not very well, but I ran them, lol. I didn’t start running distance until my senior year of high school when i ran cross country. I did some minor speed training to run an Intramural relay while I was in college and again in 1992 to run in the Corporate Relays the one year it was in Seattle.

All I can say is be careful! To run as fast as you can for 100m requires an entirely different gear than even sprinting at the end of a 5K. I am no expert but it seems to require an entirely different set of muscles. Do some 100m-400m pyramid workouts, etc… – but i would definitely get with a proper coach first for advice and form corrections. Let me know how you feel when you run your first 200m at full effort, I think you will be surprised how different it feels and how soon you get tired vs what you expect :) And the 400m all out sprint is an entirely different animal.

Reply

John, I didn’t know you did those events in high school! Those are all SO hard! Thank you so much for the advice, I’ve definitely been worried about pulling a hamstring! I’ll definitely hit the track for that type of pyramid workout and I’ll ask a coach for some great running form tips. THANK YOU, I’m nervous and excited all at once ha. Hope your Tuesday is off to a great start!

Reply

Good morning!! I am definitely not made for speed, so can’t offer you any tips. The shortest race I ever did was a 400m in high school – it was not pretty. LOL!
I love cheesecake and The Cheesecake Factory is a little slice of heaven on earth in my opinion. My favorite is their Lemon Raspberry. Now, I just need to get some!!
Like I am not made for speed, I am also not made for shopping…unless it’s running shoes, sports gear, or active wear for said sports. Real world clothes…not so much. Skye seriously cracks me up – what a spunky little thing she is!

Reply

The 400m is SO so hard! I don’t know how you did that. Next time I am at CF I am going to try the Lemon Raspberry slice, that sounds so good for breakfast right now ha. AMEN to shopping for running stuff vs other clothes. I could shop all day for active wear:). I hope you get to do that soon! Thanks Janine, I hope your day is a great one!

So great to see Dave is still running! Always nice to see him on the blog because he just puts himself into the world (I realize it’s part of his persona). Now as I think about it, I’m going to say you and he are the extraverts of your sibling group (could be wrong). I miss his lockdown dancing, but I guess he’s back to racking up the hours.

Wait, when is the race? He lives so close to you now, it could be any time. I don’t dare miss the post. Yes, you have to win – summon the Force.

Oh, well Andrew is studying a lot. Did he catch all the latest on UFOs?

Reply

Haha you are definitely right about my brother and me being the extraverts in our family! He wants the race to happen next month and I want it to happen in about six months ha. I’m not sure, I’ll have to ask! Have a fabulous day, Lee!

Reply

This is bringing excitement, forget any anxiety! Would you say it’s polar opposite of your ultra? (Could be?) I do not have your ultra training time committed to memory – was it 1 year? So if one was to do the math, is 1 month prep for 100 logical on a mathematical basis? Alternatively, can you make the case for 6 months? Where is AZ brother??

Yes, you brought the excitement, here!

Reply

Hi Janae! 100m that’s insane! Maybe some strength training (lifting heavy) with explosive movements (plyometric stuff) will help? And then some strides during your warmup to loosen up.
Anyways happy birthday Dave! Good luck to both of you!

Reply

THANK YOU Amy, I am very nervous about this ha but you are so right, some lifting and plyometrics will definitely help along with those strides. Have a fabulous day friend!

Reply

Yay! Good luck on your 100m!
Also, is there a different link for the soup/bread? Current link takes me to Instagram log-in.

Reply

I am SO sorry about that! Do you have IG? Go to her page @imhungrywhatsfordinner and the bread is her most recent post and the soup was her first post. I hope that works and you try them, they were both so good!

Reply

Haha, I LOVE this race and i’m going to be rooting for both you and Dave so hard! It reminds me of when Courtney Dauwalter, Maggie Guterl and Sally McRae were on the I’ll Have Another podcast and they were joking that in order for one of them to be competitive in a road marathon they would need to run 30 miles to warm up first. Happy Birthday to Dave and so fun to be together with your whole family yesterday!

Reply

BAHAHA that is so funny to hear that from those incredible women… I understand on a much shorter level haha. Thank you so much Michelle and I really hope you are having a great morning!

Happy birthday, Dave!

As for training for super fast races–I think that getting into some plyometrics AND some HIIT work that can help increase agility and activate fast-twitch muscle fibers can help. And because you know I am such a Les Mills enthusiast, and because I know you have some great equipment at home, I’m going to say this: sign up for a free trial of Les Mills OnDemand and try their GRIT workouts (HIIT) and their SPRINT workouts (HIIT but on a spin bike)–a couple a week will not only be great cross-training, but it could help with that agility and reactiveness that comes with focusing on fast-twitch muscle fibers. It might be a different way to approach quick bursts of speed that can leave your heart racing outside of your body and that maybe you can’t sustain beyond 100M!

100 miles race?!? Oh my. That sounds exhausting. And like ASKING for so much pain. (and maybe needing a lot of yoga to prevent injury…and needing alllllllllll the carbs, so it could be a very delicious training cycle…)

That banana bread looks SO GOOD. Send me some to ATL–except (EXCEPT!!!) I bought a microwavable chocolate/chocolate chip protein muffin from Trader Joe’s for my mid-afternoon snack for today. And I am REALLY EXCITED to try that. I’ve heard from a work colleague that it’s a good one!!!

Your Kneaders panini looks amazing! Happy dating anniversary :)

I hope that today’s run was a good one. My morning workout was pure strength–pistol squats and reverse lunges and two-point rows and ski swings and allllllllllllll the squats and bicep curls and more. Maybe once I get some more join stability and get some of the muscles surrounding my joints stronger, the running will come back to me. But now it is time to really focus on that STRENGTH.

Reply

Hey Stephanie! You are so right about the plyometrics and HIIT work (but those are just so hard for me ha). I’ll totally try out that free trial, thank you so much! Oh I have no desire to run a 100 mile race, I meant 100 miles in 7 days of running:) but the yoga and carbs will both be very needed for that goal too! Let me know what you think of the muffin and I’ll have to try it! Way to go on your workout today, you are SO strong and I love your focus right now. Have a great one!

My 4th grader still wants me to pick out her clothes and I love it, no second guesses in the morning, no dealing with outfits that might not go together at all, simple. My 7th grader said “ you know it’s about time she started doing that herself”. I was able to say to her, you were middle of 5th grade before you started picking out your outfits. She disagrees. But I don’t push independence in that area at all. My 4th grader is all about comfort and if it has an animal on the shirt, bonus points. Jeans are a HARD no.

Cannot wait to see how the race goes!!! I have faith in you!!!! :)

And, whenever you post about Kneaders, I so wish we had one!!!! Even the name just brings to mind gooey chunks of bread!!!!

I only like cheesecake if it has chunks of cookie dough or something in it. ha ha So, the answer to the question of actually liking CHEESECAKE is probably no. ha ha

I love clothes and picking out my clothes! I am NOT saying this to brag, but it shows what a shopaholic I am. I think I could get through an entire school year not repeating an outfit. Crazy, huh?! My oldest daughter likes clothes, and she’s so good about going to Goodwill and finding cool stuff/vintage stuff in addition to shopping at the mall. My youngest daughter DETESTS shopping!!!!! You’re right–it is funny how different two siblings can be!!!!!

Hope you’re having a great week, Janae!!!!

Happy belated birthday!
I fly at least 2/month usually and haven’t seen him yet (but I don’t always see the flight crew.)
Eagerly awaiting the race :)

I wish someone shopped for me and told me what to wear!! Yes please.
My boys, 6 and 8, have been picking out their clothes for years. I didn’t think boys would be so opinionated but they have been and it was causing battles. Fine… wear whatever you want every day. I do draw the line and pick out church clothes.

Reply

Hi Janae! So my now 13 year old has been selecting her outfits since about 5 or so and she is really good at it! She makes things match that I would never think to put together. I like shopping but I tried Stitch Fix once and it was spot on, so I think a personal shopper would be cool. I should try that again one day.
I also wanted to say my daughter has those same Target tie dye pajamas as Brooke. I gave them to her for Valentine’s Day. They are so soft!

I’m concerned that you’re sharing desserts. What happened to 2 full ones?!
