3 x 2 Miles + Coveting Big Time + Not Something I Want to See On the Run

I made a promise to myself during my run yesterday that I will never run without bobby pins or a headband in the canyon again.

I was eating my hair for a few miles because of the wind…

It had been a few weeks since I had been able to meet up with my group for a speed workout and I was so happy that it worked out yesterday and I was able to go.

My biggest goal for the day was to be able to see someone from the group at all times which I succeeded in for the first two intervals.  The group yesterday was Emilee and a bunch of fast guys so I was definitely way behind everyone.  Do not ever let being the slowest in the group hold you back from joining people… That is what makes us faster.   Use their speedy energy up ahead to pull you forward too.

Added bonus= runners are always the nicest people which means nobody cares if they have to wait for you to finish your interval.

The views during our run were definitely worth the drive.

We had a 2 mile w/u and then did 3 x 2 miles with a 1 mile recovery in between and 2 mile c/d.

Mine looked like this:

2 miles up (377 ft of climbing)—> 7:37 average  (PS I lied to myself about this one.. I knew how hard it was going to be so I said I was only going to just do 1 mile up before I started but then kept going to finish the interval once I hit a mile.  The lies I tell myself for speed workouts always help me to start).

2 miles down (294 ft of dropping)—> 6:10 average

2 miles flat—> 6:52 average <— my whole body was hurting for this one.

I won’t be able to do a long run this weekend because of scheduling so I’m counting this as my long run… I love it when I can combine speed and a long run into one day.

I have a feeling my legs are going to be sore for a bit after yesterday.

The thing I was coveting more than ever yesterday were these Hyperion Elite 2s.  I had never seen the neon yellow in person before and they are just amazing and they look so so fast.

During the final interval I promised myself a hot tub session if I didn’t quit and Skye is always happy to join me in the hot tub.  She can get in her swimsuit within seconds of me saying the words ‘hot tub.’

If I ask Skye if she wants a pepper she tells me no but if I just put them in front of her she will eat them.  Also, she insists that she peels her own fruit… she is an independent one.

Andrew is so proud because he has another Harry Potter loving kid… Knox can’t put the books down lately.

I think Skye actually pretends she is a dog more than Brooke does these days!

IMG 2203

It was a burger and sweet potato night at our house.  Those 12 miles revved up my hunger big time.  Speedwork miles make me even hungrier than normal miles.

And a hello from Beck!

Another runner coming across something that I hope to NEVER see on the run.

4th Harry Potter book is my favorite . . . but they are all the best!

I love this reminder that it’s okay to run with people faster than you! I want to join a run group but I know I’ll be waaaay slower. Most groups in my area are not meeting right now with covid, but one day I’ll join!!!!

You are making me want sweet potato fries. Will have to do that this weekend!

Reply

YES YES YES… Kristin, I really hope you join someday! I was about a half a mile behind some of the runners yesterday during the 2 mile intervals and nobody cared. Let me know when the groups are meeting again in your area. Enjoy those sweet potato fries. Happy Thursday, Kristin!

I think it’s the ultra runner Camille Herron who loves to run with her hair loose- i can’t even imagine! It would drive me nuts.

Reply

I don’t know how she does it either! Have a beautiful day, Jenny!

“Good bear” hahahaha I’m cracking up. I’m sorry, but if I was being pursued by any creature bigger than a squirrel I would not take the time to record it. I would be OUT OF THERE so fast. haha.
That’s a killer workout you did!!! Definitely deserving of the hot tub after!
I usually wear a hat so it keeps my hair out of my face, unless the hat blows off, which it often does because it’s so windy here. And speaking up, raining and 30mph winds for my race sunday. UGHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. It is what it is right?

Reply

That’s what I said… who is getting their phone out to record in a situation like that?! Andrew said he would though ha. I need to be wearing more hats, they do the best job keeping hair out of my face. 30MPH WINDS FOR YOUR RACE!?! I’m really hoping that it is a point to point course and the wind is a tailwind?! Tell me that’s the situation!

Prisoner of Azkaban or Order of the Phoenix are my favorite books! Favorite movie is Sorcerer’s Stone, since it is always so fun to go back to the beginning.

Can I pick both sweet potato and regular fries haha? Too hard to choose between them!

And yes, need hair out of my face while running! Headbands don’t stay put, so I use Bobby pins or braid back the front pieces.

Reply

You absolutely can pick both… have you ever had them mixed up? It’s the best! Emilee always does a braid with the front pieces and it looks so good. Have the best day and any updates with the guy?

Reply

So good mixed up!! Best option, in my opinion. And thank you for asking!! Things are going well with the guy- I feel bad that between work and school I only really get to see him on weekends. But he is so understanding and supportive. I stopped counting dates now so I guess that means it’s getting serious!

Reply

I agree with Mollie! If I were being chased by a bear or mountain lion, anything like that, I wouldn’t even think about recording it! But I love when people do, so that we can all see it… Ha ha. Good bear! I’m not your food… Ha ha
I think my favorite Harry Potter book/movie changes. I like them all.
Awesome job on your workout! Wowzers. I would love to have a big running group to be able to chase after fast runners. I agree, that really helps make you faster!
I’m not a huge fan of sweet potato fries, and maybe because I haven’t found really good ones?? But I think my favorite fries are from a local-ish “gourmet” burger chain here called Islands. Always crispy!
Ok, off for an early run before the bathroom crew arrives (before 7) to finish up the last big stuff! So close to being done! ?

Reply

RIGHT?! Recording it would be my last thought but Andrew said he would definitely think of recording it too… maybe it’s a guy thing ha?! Wish you could join our group for some runs! I need to try Islands, that sounds delicious! Your bathroom is almost done, hallelujah! Enjoy Wendy!

Our son who is 3 tells us all of the time that he doesn’t want something, but if we just put it out for him he will eat it. Kids are so funny!! ?

Hahah I have a feeling your son and Skye would be best friends:). Have the best day Ashley!

HI Janae! The one Knox has in his hands is my favorite…Prisoner of Azkaban. My daughter is a huge reader and refuses to read the Harry Potter books. She tends to not want to read the popular books. It’s so funny. I think she will eventually com around….maybe.
I am an any type of fries person, but my family really isn’t. Can you believe that? Our discussions are more of where to find the best tortilla chip! Ha!
I use barrettes or bobby pins and then a hat takes care of the rest while running. It was 36 degrees this morning so it was a Smart Wool hat for me, I need my ears covered when it is that temp and windy.

Reply

Hey Crissy! I love that your daughter loves reading so much and hopefully she will join you in the Harry Potter love! It has sure made Andrew happy that Knox is reading them on his own. I was going to judge your family about the fries until you said they love chips… tortilla chips and salsa are the best;). 36 degrees… come on spring! I’m with ya, my ears need to be warm when I am running! Have the best day friend.

My 6 year old asked to start reading Harry Potter last weekend so we got the first book from the library and she is obsessed. Every night she asks if we can just keep reading. I loved all the books and the movies and I am excited to relive them with her.

I do love a good sweet potato fry and I wish more places had them on the menu. But for a regular French fry I do love Culver’s crinkle cut ones or we have a hamburger place called MeatHeads and they have really good fries that I dip in malt vinegar.

I don’t like my hair in my face when I run. I really don’t understand people who run with their hair down. Mine stays back in a ponytail pretty well but I also wear hats a lot too.

Reply

Oh this makes me so happy to hear about your 6 year old! She and Knox should have a book club:)
I have never tried dipping fries in malt vinegar, I am going to try that and report back to you. I’m with you, I can’t imagine running with my hair down. I did once because my ponytail broke and it was the worst. Have the best day, Corrinne!

Reply

My 2 year old loves cuties and has been peeling them since she was 1 1/2. She doesn’t want it anymore if someone else has peeled it.

Between sweet potato fries and regular fries it just depends on the fry!

Reply

Hahaha good to know I’m not alone on this peeling independence thing! It’s so funny to me because Brooke and Knox still ask me to peel their cuties. I hope you have some good fries soon. Have a beautiful day, Mandy!

Hi Janae! I always thought headbands didn’t work for me cuz they would slip but this weekend I discovered that they make headbands with grips and I bought one! So far it has been a game changer and I am going to run with it on today for my speed workout.
Congrats on acing that speed and long run combo and have a wonderful day!

Reply

Slipping headbands is the absolute worst! I am so glad you found some good headbands with grips, that makes all of the difference. Thank you friend and enjoy your Thursday !

I’m so boring. When I AM running, I just want a good pair of Brooks Ghosts. I haven’t really been running lately, but I know that when I get back to it, it doesn’t matter that I got my latest pair of Ghost 11s right before I had to take a break (that’s still going a couple of years later–HA!) and that they’re more or less in like-new condition. I will want a pair of whatever is brand new and current with the ghosts!

And I am sort of funny and definite with my shoes. Glycerins are for long days walking around and for to-and-from the gym and for running errands. Launches have been my go-to shoe for training. And now that I am starting to seriously emphasize strength training, I might have to get a pair of the latest Launch release (though I am still going through a backstock I have of Launch 4s–which just feel so good on my feet…). Maybe it will be a treat when I reach and successfully complete the half-way point of my 12 week strength training program? We will see. I might hold off until I complete all 12 weeks and then get a new pair of the latest Launches as a reward of some sort. Or maybe I will go outside of Brooks and get myself a pair of the latest Reebok Nanos, since I’ve heard that they are actually a pretty amazing shoe from everyday strength training up through powerlifting and olympic lifts (and somewhere way back in my heart I have a dream of getting up to VERY RIDICULOUSLY HEAVY deadlifts and back squats…).

As for fries: I’ve had good regular fries and good sweet potato fries and not-so-good ones of both kinds. I’m an equal opportunity fries person. As for the best? Hmm. When it comes to fast/fast-casual options, I am all about Five Guys. When it comes to sit-down restaurants, I will say that a local chain, Marlow’s, has on their appetizer menu these garlic, parmesan, & truffle oil fries that are beyond amazing and that I could eat every single time (though their normal fries–that I can get as a side…with a salad!…are excellent). There are a couple of nicer restaurants we’ve been to that have good fries, though I can’t remember which places right now. I can just close my eyes and think back to numerous times in the last almost-5 years Tom and I have been in ATL where we’ve been out to eat and have said “these are good fries!”

But in a pinch–I will be so happy to eat the fries from Marlows any and every day!

And for a non-traditional fry, there is a burger place called Moxie Burger that has these amazing zucchini fries that I could eat any and every day of the week. YUM. I want them right now. ;)

Reply

HEY STEPHANIE! I’m with you, the Ghosts are just magical! YAY for strength training Stephanie and I love hearing what shoes you love for different things, I’m particular like you! I think that will be a great treat for when you reach the 12 weeks… but of course my vote is on the latest Launch haha. I LOVE THAT DREAM… keep chasing it Stephanie! Yep, 5 Guys has the best fries, that is for sure but now I must try those Marlow’s fries… yum! Also, I’ve never tried zucchini fries but now you have me interested. Have a great day friend!

Awesome speed work! I just got a pair of Brooks Glycerin and am embarking on my second run in them today :) I am forever on the hunt for a way to bring my phone along with me on runs. I like to have it for safety purposes, since my Garmin will do the trick for everything else. I’ve tried arm bands, flip belts, Koala clips, etc. My favorite solution is having leggings or tight shorts with pockets, but I don’t have the funds to replace all my bottoms with ones of this style! Anyone have a solution??

Reply

Not really a solution Charlotte but I’m case you are unfamiliar Senita make really affordable tights with good side pockets. I’m relaxing post run in a pair of their vinyasas right now but the shorts are around $25! I know Janae has written about loving the Rios and has a link if you search.

I am a bit afraid to try shorts (I prefer being as covered as possible, with running partially because I am very fair and sensitive to sun) but I think as a special treat if I hit my goal for a 5k my university is doing I’ll try some 5 and 7 inch ones from Senita and Brooks and find my perfect summer pair.

Reply

HEY KIM! Thanks for the help and when is your 5k?! I’m cheering for you and I love the idea of getting yourself a special treat of new running shorts. Have the best day!

Reply

Oh no… the Koala Clip didn’t work out for you? I agree with Kim, the Senita ones are cheaper for sure and this pair is awesome too and has those pockets also and they are $20! https://amzn.to/3v57owW
I am all about washing my favorite things often so I don’t need a lot of them so maybe try getting two of them ?!
I’m with you on always wanting to have my phone with me too! Let me know what you think of the Glycerins! Have a beautiful day friend.

Reply

Also, senita has bras with phone pockets. Seriously amazing quality, and they are like $25.

Reply

I’ve seen those Loribeth and wondered!! So cool!

also, senita has bras with phone pockets………..amazing! $25

110% sweet potato fries! It’s been so long since I’ve had good ones any place, I can’t even think of where to get them, LOL.
Most of the time, a bun will do it for my hair, but a visor or a Junk Brands band is always a good backup for me. Hair in my mouth or eyes makes me nuts!
I’ve been shopping for running shoes for many weeks now. Since Brooks discontinued their Pure Connect style, I haven’t loved any of the shoes I’ve bought. Pure Flow is OK, but it’s not the same. So I’m getting Saucony Kinvaras for mother’s day–can’t wait, and I hope they will be my new fave.

Reply

I am really hoping that you are able to find a good sweet potato fries place asap and if you are ever in Utah, I’ll take you for the best here! Just googled those headbands and they look awesome! I’ll have to try. That sounds like the perfect Mother’s Day gift… please let me know what you think and I hope they fill the void of the Pure Connect! Have a great day, Corey!

`Sweet potato fries are waaaaay better.
`I hate my hair in my face when I run! Step 1 is a braid so no fly-aways sticking to my face/neck/shoulders. Step 2 are those triangle shaped snap clips you often see on gymnasts – they stay and hold hair horns in place soooo much better for me than bobby pins (I use the medium or large size – small is too small and XL is too big). https://www.target.com/p/snap-hair-clip-set-12pc-wild-fable-8482-neutrals/-/A-81064245?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000080841114&CPNG=BCM_BCM+Distressed&adgroup=A%26A_Cat_DR&LID=700000001170770pgs&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=g&device=c&location=9028791&targetid=aud-985052325245:pla-316241427803&gclid=Cj0KCQjwvYSEBhDjARIsAJMn0lgMUa29C7CBNXkdCk9HUPB1ebVTv5l2khKlSLJ9szwOVU1JDFuQJdoaAqDCEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

My first marathon was Philadelphia back in 2013, and after the race we got burgers and fries at this place called Good Dog Bar. Their fries are a MIX of regular and sweet potato fries (aka best of both worlds), and maybe it was the post-marathon hunger, but I will forever remember that meal as one of the best of my life haha! Highly recommend if you are ever in Philly!

Reply

HEY MOLLIE! First, I really want to run the Philadelphia Marathon and if I do, I will be following in your footsteps and going to Good Dog Bar afterwards. That meals sounds amazing! Meet me there:). Have a beautiful day, friend.

sweet potato fries are 1000000 x better in my opinion! I don’t crave regular fries that often, but when I do it’s gotta be Chick Fil A.

I just bought what I was really wanting, new shorts from Chicknlegs (llama print and yellow pineapples and pink lightning bolts) and also some tanks from Free People. The happiness runs material feels soooooo good!

I still have my eye on some running shorts from Boa Usa that look like cow print, complete with pink liners, but I have plenty for now.

And I cannot stand when my hair sticks to me while I am sweaty and running. It drives me nuts!

Reply

I fully agree with you… sweet potato fries are the best but chick fil a and 5 guys have my heart for normal fries! Llama print and yellow pineapples and pink lightning bolt shorts… those sound amazing. I’ve heard from a lot of people that they love the tanks from Free People, I’ll have to try them. I hope you get the Boa Usa shorts soon… is there such thing as too many shorts haha. Have a fabulous day, Loribeth!

I’m actually reading through Harry Potter again! I’m on #5, which is definitely my least favorite. #6 is my favorite book. Don’t really have a favorite movie. The books are so much better!

Reply

Oh that is awesome! I’ll have to tell Knox that #6 is your favorite! Have a beautiful day and enjoy rereading HP!

Your sweet potato fries look SOOOO good! I love sweet and regular potatoes of all kinds – fries, roasted, blistered, I think I could live off of potatoes. Rich Roll had a guest on once that ate only potatoes for a whole year, turns out they are pretty darn nutritious!

I definitely need my hair out of my face when I run (or just in general). I do a regular pony tail with those woven hair bands you recommended – they are the best! Whenever I get my hair cut I stare deeply into my sweet hair dressers eyes and remind her that every hair MUST be long enough to fit in the pony. #runnerproblems

Reply

Oh Michelle, I am with you… potatoes in any form are just so delicious (I mean, hashbrowns or a baked potato… yum). A whole year, okay I need to find that episode.
BAHAHA what you said about when you get your hair cut made me laugh so hard! It’s true!
Have an awesome rest of your day!

Reply

Is Knox growing a mullet?? Haha.
Also, can Knox read those books already? I don’t think I realize what level they are but thought they were older.
I covet the expensive stuff – Lululemon!

Happy Friday Eve! Likely in he minority here, but I have never been a Harry Potter fan. That said, I love anything that gets kids hooked on reading!
Tough call between sweet potato and regular…I have to agree with some others who have said it depends on the fry. My absolute favorites are the waffle fries at a local place. I may or may not have just had fries and a salad as my meal on more than one occasion ;o)
I cannot stand my hair being in my face when I run or do any other workout. Headbands slide right off my hair and it’s too short for a ponytail, so I usually use barrettes or a hat.
Honestly, I have all the heart eyes for my Glycerin 18s right now <3 <3 <3
Have an awesome Thursday!!
