Trying to not get my hopes up too high… + Tangents!

I spoke wayyyy too soon.  My run yesterday did not feel anything like spring.  It is quite amazing to me that we can go from 19 degrees in the morning to 45 degrees by the afternoon.

Another solo run for me with 8 miles @ 8:13 average.

IMG 9049

And then this happened for legit 2 minutes.  I can run 11 miles at this point in my fitness but put me on anything that involves cross-training and I cannot last long.  Andrew is up to doing the rowing machine for 25 minutes and he loves it.  I really want to start incorporating it more because the point in my life where my core was it’s strongest was when I was using the rowing machine often.  PS our rowing machine is a Concept 2 and let me know if anyone is wanting a review on it after I’ve used it a bit more.

I’m going to get to know the wall in front of this rower very well over the next few years.

Our Monday morning felt like it REALLY needed these Double Chocolate Muffins from Two Peas and their Pod.  They are basically cake in the shape of a muffin and I couldn’t be happier about it.

IMG 9063

Everybody in the family was a big fan of them.  PS as I was watching Skye eat her muffin I was thinking about how she is just about the same age that Brooke and Knox were when Andrew and I met.   Skye is keeping us quite busy at this stage so it made me wonder how in the world we had 2 at this age at the same time while blending a family!

IMG 9067

We took advantage of another day of being able to ski for a bit!

IMG 9077

Brooke wanted to go on the back mountain where the more advanced runs are and I had a hard time keeping up with her at points.

IMG 9074

And then we came home to chicken tortilla soup that I put in the crockpot that morning.   Another thing motivating me to cook more often is adding up in my head how expensive it is to take our family out to eat these days (Brooke and Knox’s appetites make them practically need an adult meal too).

I’ve got a few tangents to talk with you today about….

*Skye is very into American Girl dolls right now.  She has been playing with my old one from when I was a little girl!

IMG 9062

*My sister says that she is positive that she has magnets in her legs and lately I have been feeling like I have a few magnets in my legs lately too.

IMG 8899

*The other day I was reading this article from ESPN about whether or not the Tokyo Olympics are really going to happen this summer (start day July 23rd)?   I really hope they can happen and from everything I’m reading it seems like they will but I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high!

*I’m a little impressed by my typing skills while holding a baby at the same time, 90% of posts are written this way ha.

*These.  So much goodness in one little box.

Favorite type of Girl Scout cookies?

-Samoas 100% first place for me followed by thin mints.

What was the last cross-training that you did?  What is your favorite form of cross-training lately?

What do you think?  2021 Summer Olympics going to happen?

Multitasking—> Is it something you are good at?  Something you do often or something you try to avoid?

Tagalongs!! Then Samoas then thin mints (but only frozen!) We don’t even bother with any of the other flavors!

Thank you for reminding me to freeze the thin mints… so much better that way! I hope you get some Tagalongs soon. Happy Tuesday Jenn!

Samoas are my favorite too! Love them!
I hear you about the weather–so yesterday started rainy but by end of day it was 41 degrees and partly sunny…this morning was 21 degrees feeling like 7…so I ran but it was a very chilly run. But I’m not complaining after 1 month of having to run on treadmill due to the snow we got here in NJ–I’m finally able to run outside safely!
So proud of you for the progress you made after having the baby–and you multitask while at it!

The weather is all over the place ha… how do we even know how to dress anymore?! I am SO glad that you are able to run outside again safely! We made it through winter:) Thank you Damarys, I hope your Tuesday is off to a great start.

Rowing: Check out Dark Horse Rowing on YouTube. Great tutorials on proper rowing form (to make you more efficient) and has some ideas for “fun” workouts (i.e. like intervals, etc.) to help pass the time/mix up the monotony of rowing for long periods of time. I am very short – so not a super great rower – BUT we have incorporated a lot of rowing over the past few months at my gym and I have learned to love it a little more.

Favorite Girl Scout Cookie: Will always be the Thin Mint. Preferably straight out of the freezer. Nom Nom Nom.

You. Are. The. Best. I just checked them out and this is exactly what I need. Great job on improving your rowing over the last few months and loving it more. I’m excited. I hope you get some of those Thin Mints asap and I’m thankful for you guys reminding me to put them in the freezer! Have a great day Melissa!

Aldi’s carries mint cookies, peanut butter chocolate and I believe Samoa type as well for around a $1.00 and in my opinion taste better. The mint are like eating a thin mint.

Reply

WHAT?! That is amazing… We need Aldi’s in Utah! I hope your day is a great one Nicky!

You can tame your American Girl doll’s hair by spraying it with water from a spray bottle, then using a wire brush to brush it out! Braiding it will help keep it from getting too crazy. :)

I’ve always been terrible at cross-training, but we got a pandemic Peloton like half of the world, hahah, and it is the BEST. I’m doing PowerZone training with it, which reminds me of the hardest marathon training I’ve ever done, plus 2-3 hours a week of strength training with the peloton app, and my running times are getting soooooo much better without injury (which is a huge deal for me bc I’m pretty injury-prone thanks to an old crush injury on my ankle that throws off my gait).

Reply

Pandemic Peloton hahaha… that made me laugh so hard. I haven’t heard them called that yet. I am SO happy you are loving it so much and that it is doing so much for your running too. 2-3 hours of strength, wow. You are crushing it Rachael. Can’t wait to hear how your next race goes and I’m so happy your staying injury free. Have a great day!

Tagalongs are my favorite, followed by Samoas. I just sent a box of Samoas to our oldest! He’s always loved them.
Oh man… I really hope the Olympics happen in July!! For all the athletes who have been/are training and preparing, but honestly for all of us! The world needs a big normal thing. Even if no one is there other than the athletes and coaches.
I use to use the eliptical at my gym for cross training, but that hasn’t happened in a year (I miss my gym!). So really the only cross training I’ve been doing is hiking or just walking. But I have been good at working in pilates a few days a week and strength a few days a week too.
It has been so windy here the last couple of days! I was finishing my run yesterday morning and felt like I had something pulling me back as I was trying to move forward! Resistance training…ha ha. At least the temps are nice.
Have a good day ?

Reply

Hey Wendy! Oh your son is going to love getting those Samoas. I totally agree, the world needs the Olympics to happen! Oh I bet you miss that gym so much and I can’t wait for it to open again for you. You have been so consistent with pilates and it is paying off! I hope the wind calms down and I love that you call it resistance training, so so true. Thank you friend, you too!

PB patties are the best! I think they used to be called Tagalongs? Want to try the s’mores ones too! Thanks for reminding me to order and support the girls!!

I hope summer olympics happen. I feel so bad for the athletes who have been training so long, if it doesn’t happen again.

Reply

How have I never tried the s’mores ones? Are those new? I googled them and they look amazing! I really hope so too… I can’t wait to see what our women do in the marathon. Have the best day, Mariah!

Those muffins look delicious! I want to try making them but with peanut butter chips instead.

Brilliant. And now I need to make more today to try this combo. Let me know what you think and I hope you have a beautiful day Cynthia!

Samoas are my favorite too! Did you know that in some parts of the country GS cookies have different names? In Florida (where I am based), those cookies are called Caramel deLites :) Fun fact? Haha Hope you have a great day!!!

Reply

I did not know that… that is awesome and fun facts are my favorite. I hope your day is a beautiful one and that you get some Caramel deLites asap!

Hi!

I had my second baby a few weeks after Beck was born (my oldest is about a month older than Skye), and it was recommended to me to see a pelvic floor physical therapist. The physical therapist has been so great for rebuilding my core properly. She has also given me great stretches and exercises for my back, shoulders, hips, all the areas that get achy from holding and feeding a baby. Just wanted to share in case you hadn’t considered physical therapy

Reply

CONGRATS on baby #2!! I love how close our two are in age! That is such a great idea, I definitely should check one out in my area. THANK YOU for sharing and please keep me updated with how you are all doing (ps did your older revert to waking up in the night again once you had your second?!). Have a great day and I hope you are all sleeping!

Reply

For 6 weeks after the baby was born, my 3-year-old came in to my bed every single night. She never did that before the baby. At 6 weeks, my husband started walking her back to her bed when she would get up, and she stopped coming in. She also has an Okay to Wake clock. It’s a clock with a stoplight and it starts off on the red light, and you can set it to turn green at whatever time. So for a while I was giving her prizes if she stayed in bed until her light turned green Now she is back to sleeping through the night in her bed without any special incentives

Thank you so much for replying. I will be purchasing that clock today, thank you for sharing… excited to try it with Skye.

Hi Janae! 100% agree about samoas being the #1 cookie followed by thin mints. I heard that depending on where you live they are manufactured by different bakeries which means somewhere out there are different versions of the same cookie for me to try. This is really exciting to me. I don’t know about the olympics but can you imagine being on an olympic team and not knowing for sure what will happen? That is so crazy especially for the marathon where you only have like two big races a year. Anyways I hope you have an excellent Tuesday!

Reply

HEY AMY! I really hope you get some Samoas soon and I didn’t know that about the different bakeries. We must try them all! I seriously cannot imagine trying to train as hard as they do without knowing if they were going to happen. Hopefully they do. Thank you friend, you too!

Samoas fan, for sure!

I just spent an hour doing my cross training. I’m currently really in to resistance bands and I’ve found some great videos on Amazon Prime that move at a pace that I can keep up and that keep me engaged. I’m terrible at counting my own reps! My current band is 30 pounds, so nothing heavy, just some good resistance. I’ve stuck with it for 2 months now and I can really see a difference.

A lot of the early cycling races have been happening in Europe, so I’m hoping the Olympics can happen this year.

Reply

Way to go Kathy… it sounds like the perfect setup and I hope you are so proud of staying consistent for 2 months now (much longer than I’ve ever stuck to strength training)! That is so good to hear about the cycling races! Hope you enjoy the rest of your day!

Hi! Long time follower first time comment-er! :) I also have a concept2 rower and have found their workouts of the day to be super helpful. You can just go to their site and subscribe for free and a workout is sent to your email every day. They have short/medium/long options (anything from ten minutes to an hour… maybe Andrew will like that one ha!) and sometimes it’s nice to follow those if you’re wanting ideas for a workout!

Reply

Hey Alexandra! THANK YOIU for telling me about this. Subscribing now to get the emails and I’ll do the 10 minute ones and then Andrew can do the hour one ha. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of your day!

To add to the fun fact on the Girl Scout Names, there are 2 big distributors and they have different names for most of the cookies except for Thin Mints! Tagalongs = PB Patties and Samoas = Carmel Delights. I grew up with the fun names ;-) So this will be an unpopular opinion, but I don’t like coconut, so I never order Samoas. This year I ordered Thin Mints, Tagalongs, lemonade cookies and the S’more cookies!
I am 27 weeks (last week of the 2nd trimester!) so running is happening less and less, but I’m renting a bike from a local studio and using the Peloton app, so it’s been nice to add that in when I can’t run. Before the pandemic, I used to occasionally take Versa Climber classes and wow those will definitely get your heart going and it’s great bc the classes were only 30 mins.

I hope the Olympics happen, mostly for the athletes since they have to train so hard, it must be hard mentally and physically to get your body to where it needs to be and then having to reschedule. I would love to watch it, but also want everyone to be safe!!
I can multi task between doing different things, but not if it requires listening, then I’m not so good with that.

Your mountain views for your runs are just incredible! Especially with that pinky-violet blue sky!

I am a journalist living in Tokyo and covering the lead-up to the Games a LOT (either that, or corona seem to be the only two stories some days!). I think they will go ahead – it really does seem like all systems go here. My street is still covered with Tokyo 2020 banners. BUT…they will likely look very different from what we think are “normal” Olympics. I’m guessing no or very limited spectators (no foreign tourists), lots of social distancing, safety measures, etc. The torch relay is scheduled to kick off in three weeks, so that will be a big sign to look for!

KATIE! Thank you thank you thank you for sharing this info with us. You are a journalist living in Tokyo?! What an incredible experience. Keep us updated and I can’t wait to see the torch relay start soon:). Have a beautiful day!

My little girls play with my American girl as well. I just wanted to let you know you can wash the dolls hair with shampoo and conditioner and brush it with the conditioner still in it and then rinse it and it will be just like new!!! I found it on YouTube and it was amazing.

Reply

WHAT?! This is brand new information for me… I will absolutely do this! THANK YOU!

Janae! Samoa’s are my favorite too but sometimes I can’t wait for GS cookies to come out or don’t want to lay $5 a box SOOOOO I found the exact same cookie. Have you tried Keebler’s Coconut Dream cookie? Tastes just like a Samoa!
?

I haven’t tried those yet, thank you so much for sharing… I will grab them at the store. I hope your day is off to a great start!
