Friday Favorites & an Unfavorite!

Thursdays are trail days and I’m really happy about that.

It was my friend Jenn’s birthday so we got together for a run.  With each uphill we took, my legs reminded me that I did a tempo run the day before.

1341 ft of climbing, 9.12 miles and a 9:32 average pace.

Blogging behind the scenes photo.  Andrew and I were trying to get some work and school done during Beck’s nap but Skye was not into that idea…

IMG 4815

And we decided to hot tub instead for a few minutes.

IMG 8859

Now that it is warming up a bit, Brooke is wanting to get out and run again with me… YESSSSS!

Another repeat recipe because we all loved it so much.  These honey lime chicken enchiladas are too good.

Let’s get chatting about some favorite things from this week!

*FINALLY.  Finally. Finally.  The perfect ratio of chocolate and peanut butter in a Reese’s.  Try these please.

IMG 8625

*I LOVED Lindsey’s episode HERE with Steph Bruce, Alysia Montaño and Sara Vaughn about motherhood and running.  It was very inspiring!

*This book is AWESOME.  It has inspired a lot of really important conversations with the kids and I love the themes throughout the book.

IMG 8636

*I saw these patches on a few different people’s instagram and it took me a while to finally try them out (mainly because my skin was so much better during pregnancy but the pregnancy hormones must have worn off now).  I’ve used about 10 patches so far and each morning that I’ve used them when I take it off, the blemish hasn’t disappeared but it is so much smaller and less red.  I might have to purchase a few hundred boxes just in case they ever stop making them.

IMG 8824

*While we are talking about faces, I have to share this.  My sister hooked me on these a few years ago and they are the BEST facial razors (and so cheap).  They never irritate my skin and take care of any peach fuzz or unwanted hair I have on my face in about 2 seconds.

IMG 8831

*The word Runfulness that Brooks recently shared.  “Runfulness is mindfulness unlocked by running.  It is the effect of a run that is so good, so freeing, it allows you to forget your feet altogether- taking your mind to places the road doesn’t go.  That’s where you find the power to change a day, a life, the world.”  AMEN.

IMG 8870

And a Friday unfavorite (which I’ve never done before)… A few months ago I got a pair of the AirPod pros and I just cannot get myself to like them.  I don’t like to not be able to hear things around me when they are in my ears (even when I turn off the noise cancellations I still feel like I can’t hear anything else).  I switched Andrew for his old ones and he loves these ones so maybe I’m alone in this opinion?

I use Jaybird Vista when running because they stay put really well. But for normal every day wear, I still use headphones with cords haha. Haven’t transitioned to wireless for that yet.

Love those Reese’s! Twix are another good chocolate candy.

Reply

Hey Mariah! Those sound perfect and cords for just normal life use are great IMO! I hope you get a Reese’s and Twix asap! Happy weekend:)

You have the best trails around you! I’m running a half tomorrow on a local rail trail…not my fave kind of “trail”, but I do like it there, and it’s a live race, so I’m not complaining! ? I’ve used Aftershokz headphones for about three or four years now. They’re the best because I can always hear what’s going on around me. And their sound is really good, too.

Love that cute green zippered hoodie…what brand is it?

Reply

GO KATIE GO!! I am so so excited for you and I hope you have a blast! Wish I could come join you! Everyone loves the Aftershokz… I think I need to transition over! Thank you so much, it is from Fabletics a few years ago. Happy weekend Katie and let me know how your race goes!

I love my airpod pros for when I’m on the treadmill, ours is older and makes some noise so it really helps drown that out. When I’m folding laundry or doing whatever around the house and want to be able to hear my kids or things around me, I turn off the noise cancellation and it works for me. I know what you mean though, it’s still not the same as regular airpods or earbuds, but I don’t mind it. That sound quality though! You get great sound quality with either version of airpods, which is why I got them. I’m telling you, I’m a huge Beatles fan and when I first got my airpods I heard things in their music I’ve never heard before. Gave me goosebumps!
I am looking forward to running (hopefully 2 days in a row) OUTSIDE this weekend! The weather has finally improved enough around here.
Favorite candy w/chocolate? A plain ‘ol Hershey bar – but I also love me some Rollos.

Reply

I love my raycon ear buds! They have different sizes of the ear piece you can switch out so they fit perfectly and they stay charged forever! Fave candy that involves chocolate would have to be holiday reese’s! Hope you have a great weekend!

Reply

That is SUCH a good idea to offer different sizes of the ear piece, I love that. I will have to check them out. I hope you get some of the easter eggs Reese’s asap. Thanks so much Meghan, you too!

Reply

Oh the pros are perfect for that then so you don’t have to hear the treadmill! You are so right about the sound quality though, SO much better and I loved learning about your love for the Beatles:). Happy running outside this weekend Amanda and I hope you have a Hershey or Rolos afterwards:).

Reply

Thin Reeses? Are you nuts??? The holiday ones are the best IMHO. Sorry- this might be a deal breaker ; )

Reply

But have you tried the thins yet??? You might be surprised (even if it takes 10 to fill the craving) hahah! Have the nest day Hillary!

Reply

You’re not alone in the AirPods. I lost one of my old ones during a speed workout (I ran like 4 extra miles trying to find it ?) and my husband got me the new version…they kind of make me dizzy. I think there might be a way to make them less noise canceling but I can’t figure it out. The only benefit is that they never fall out. But I’m constantly checking over my shoulder because I feel like I have no spatial awareness. I definitely prefer the original ones.

Reply

Oh you lost one during a speed workout… no! I totally understand what you mean when you say they made you a bit dizzy.. me too! Have the best weekend Mollie!

Ali on the Run convinced me to get the Aftershokz and I really love that they go around the ear and allow you to hear everything going on around you. The part that goes around the neck (it reminds me of my 4th grade headgear, hah) took a little getting used to but I love them overall, they fit great with my bike helmet too.

Reply

Ali is just the best and EVERYONE is saying the same about Aftershokz! I need to find my pair and take them out on a run. Bahaha your comment about 4th grade headgear made me laugh:). Have a great weekend Michelle!

Reply

Totally on board with you on the pros! I just got them for my bday and I prefer my normal airpods to them. The noise canceling feature will definitely be nice on planes or if you need to drown out other noise. But definitely not for working out or running outdoors from a safety perspective

Reply

I also prefer the old version of AirPods – but it is more about how they fit In my ear. And you must try the Kind Chocolate bark (I get mine at target). Dark Chocolate almond is the best!

Reply

The original are just the best! I’ll have to pick those up next time I’m there… thank you! Have a great weekend Jen!!

Reply

I have the AirPod Pros too. You have to try them in transparency mode! They basically pipe all outside noise into your ear along with the music. I resisted using them that way for a while because it feels weird for the first few seconds but I’m in a big city and really shouldn’t be blocking out sounds. My ears adjust after about 30 seconds and you can hear everything so well!

Reply

I haven’t tried that mode, thanks for sharing…. I didn’t know about that and I really will have to try it! Glad it works so well for where you are running. Have a great weekend!

Reply

I use the AirPod Pros, but only wear one when I’m out running. I want to be able to hear what’s around me. I’ve also turned off the noise cancelling function.

Reply

That is what my sister does, she just wears one of them at a time… great idea Alice! I hope you have the best weekend!

Reply

I use the original AirPods and love them! I am very hard of hearing so I don’t think the AirPod pro’s would be worth the upgrade. I can’t hear anything to begin with;-).

I am looking forward to a long run outside this weekend!!!! It is finally above -30 degrees. It’s been a long 3 weeks (maybe 4?!) on the treadmill. Also, looking forward to a couple relaxing days at home and catching up on some sleep. The kids and I just spent 2 nights at Great Wolf Lodge and we are water logged, haha. Plus one child did not sleep through the night (5 years old). I don’t think I have been woken up in the middle of the night by one of my kids in at least 2 years. I forgot what it was like…

I love any type of dark chocolate. Lately I have loved alter eco burnt caramel. It doesn’t sound good, but it was delicious.

Happy Friday Janae!

Reply

Becky! The original airpods are just the best! I am SO happy that you are going to be able to run outside this weekend, that is going to feel amazing after a few weeks on the treadmill. I have heard so many things about the Great Wolf Lodge… I’m so glad you guys could go but those middle of the night wake up calls are ROUGH. I will have to try that chocolate, yum. Thanks Becky, you too!

Reply

I have been using Aftershokz for over a year and absolutely love them! I forget they’re on, and I can hear everything around me. Plus, you never have to worry about them falling out of your ears because they’re not in your ears ?
That trail looks beautiful, and such a great pace with all that climbing!
This weekend is supposed to be beautiful weather wise, so I am looking forward to being outside as much as possible!
Have a wonderful Friday Janae ?

Reply

Hey Wendy! I need to find mine and use them (I have a pair somewhere), that sounds perfect! Enjoy all of the sunshine, that sounds dreamy. Thanks Wendy, you too!

I think AirPod pros were made for men! I think that women need to be more aware of their surroundings and it’s unsettling at the very best to not be able to hear what’s going on around us, so the noise cancellation feature is unnerving. I’m sure some women love them. I usually run with one AirPod in because i like to be aware of what’s going on. It’s a sad reality for women, but that’s my take. Envious of women who can wear these without a touch of anxiety!

Reply

Yes and yes. I always wonder what it must be like for Andrew to just be able to go out and run at 11 pm without a worry in the world! Their world is so different when it comes to the safety/anxiety we experience on the run.
I hope you have a beautiful weekend!

Reply

I agree 1000% on the old AirPods opinion! I have some over the ear Beats that I use on airplanes, but I also like to hear who or what is around me when I run. Also love the Mighty Patches, but I’ve found the generic ones on Amazon work really well too!

Reply

I’ll have to try the generic ones too?! Team original airpods for life haha. Have a beautiful weekend Katy!

Reply

Have you tried turning on Transparency mode on the Pros, not just turning off noise cancellation? I love that mode! Also helped when I sized down in the earbud size, FYI.

Love the Runfullness!

Reply

I haven’t Gen… I didn’t know that was an option, thanks so much and I didn’t think about sizing down the earbud size either. THANK YOU and happy weekend… I hope you experience some Runfullness asap!

Reply

I actually love the AirPod pros because of transparency mode. This allows you to hear traffic or your surroundings while still listening to your music. Have you tried using them like that at all?

Reply

WAIT WHAT? Yep, I have never tried that but I will now. THANKS for sharing and have a great weekend!

Reply

I love the idea of writing down what you need to remember but don’t want to take on your run!! I do this when I have trouble falling asleep, but I have never thought to try it before a run!!

Also – I’m a big fan of the thin Reese’s! My MIL keeps buying them for me (no idea why but I love it).

Reply

YESSS isn’t it the best idea? Hahaha that’s awesome she keeps sending them to you… give her my address too;). Happy weekend Rachel!

Reply

I got Aftershokz based on Ali on the Run and I love them! My husband got a pair too. I can hear cars coming behind me, and they stay in place while running (even though I didn’t think they would based on their design). I won’t run outdoors with any other earphones ever. They are fantastic!

Reply

Ali is the best! Okay, I must find my Aftershokz and give them a try, they sound perfect! Thanks for sharing and I hope your day is a beautiful one.

Reply

Happy Friday!!! Even though the days still all seem to blur together for the most part, there is still something special about Fridays :o)
I very rarely wear headphones for anything at all, but if I do it’s never for running and they are old school wired ones. Pretty sure that makes me a bit of a weirdo!
Not so much Runfulness lately as “Skifulness” – that may be my new favorite word until more running is happening!
I love All. The. Chocolate. so it’s a bit of a tough call, but I think it’s a tie between Reese’s PB cups and York Peppermint Patties.
Have an amazing weekend!

Reply

HEY JANINE! Happy Friday to you! Haha not a weirdo at all, most of my runs I am headphone free too. I love the word Skilfulness! I hope you get a york or pb cup asap! Have a beautiful weekend.

Reply

My favorite are PB m and m! I love the holiday Reese’s like the trees, the pumpkins, the eggs!

Reply

I hope you get all of those things asap and if you do try the Reese’s thins you have to let me know what you think!

Reply

I run with powerbeats pro and love them! I have small ears plus one ear must be weirdly shaped because any earbuds always fall out. I’ve tried my husbands AirPod pros too and I didn’t feel like they’d be secure enough in my ear. The powerbeats clip over the ear as well as rest inside the front of the ear canal so I don’t have to worry about them coming out. I do feel like I can hear enough outside sounds when using them.

Reply

Hey Carrie! The airpod pros definitely didn’t feel secure enough in my ears too. I need to try out the powerbeats, they sound awesome! Have the best weekend.

Reply

I see others have mentioned them but I only use Aftershokz when running. I have used them for awhile now and I did find out about them from Ali on the Run! I have never had ear buds stay in my ears so these were a deal breaker. They can get wet too so since I have to run 17 miles tomorrow in the rain, I am not at all worried!

Reply

Isn’t Ali just the best?! I have a pair that I need to find to try out! GO ROCK THOSE 17 miles tomorrow (are you training for a marathon?!)! I’m cheering for you. Happy weekend Carrie!

Reply

Marathon on 4/25!! So far in person and not virtual.

Reply

I think I agree with Skye, Hot tub > work and school.

The trails look amazing!

I am the opposite wit Reese’s, I like the eggs where there is way more PB than chocolate =) I just bought a bunch of Easter candy for the kids since we will be out of town the second half of March. Now the trick is not eating it before Easter!

I love my Air Pods and also don’t like the pros, amateur air pods forever!!!

Reply

I hope you get some of those Reese’s eggs asap! Haha good luck not eating the Easter stash. Amateur airpods 4ever haha I love it. Thanks Beth and have the best weekend!

Hi Janae!! Today is my birthday so I am excited to celebrate all weekend! Today I am attempting the Yeti 24-Hour Challenge and just finished round 3. 5.2 miles every 4 hours to total 31.2, or a 50k. I’m feeling great so far and if I finish it will be my first ultra!
I don’t usually run with headphones unless I’m on the treadmill and then it’s just cheap plug in ear ups. They work for me!
I love all chocolate lol but especially butterfingers or reeses. Or health toffee…
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Reply

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY LAURA! You are on fire! I love how you are celebrating your bday and congrats on your first ultra! Let me know how it goes and I’m happy you are going to celebrate all weekend. Thanks Laura and happy birthday again!

Reply

always share an unfavorite!! love that idea. agreed, I like my old ipods!

Reply

I use Aftershokz. They sit in front of your ear and use bone conduction to hear your music. So you hear everything around you and your music. Otherwise I just use 1 earbud in 1 ear when I run.

Reply

I couldn’t stand the AirPod Pros. They didn’t stay in my ears well, and I didn’t like the sound. I went back to the regular AirPods. I also love my Aftershokz Aeroplex headphones for running!

Reply

Happy Friday! ?

I received the AirPod pros as a gift and want to love them. They’re nice but I do prefer the older style. ?

The only way I could hear what was going on around me was “transparency” mode ?

I also liked tapping the side of my AirPod to change a song or ask Siri a question. ??‍♀️

Reply

I usually use Jaybird, but in a marathon I ran today where I wanted to hear traffic (open course) but still jam to tunes, I tried the NOXGEAR wearable Bluetooth speaker. AMAZING and lightweight. Loved it! Will use it when there aren’t many runners around that might be bugged by my music.

Hi Janae! I use acne patches and swear by these: Nexcare Acne Cover, Invisible, Drug Free, Clear 36 Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BRGUNV2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_STQ6602TYPD8A56WJ7PC

Yours seem to have slightly better reviews, but I’ve been using this kind for years and love them. You may have to use them for a few nights but they really work!
Your kids are adorable and I love your blog!

Reply

Janae, i totally agree with still wanting/ needing to hear things around you on the run!! A lady in Singapore passed recently when a huge tree fell on her while she was out running. Her sister gave an interview to say she might have heard the trunk cracking and gotten out of the way if she hadn’t been wearing noise-cancelling earphones.

I don’t listen to anything on outdoor runs but for treadmill runs I use JBL earphones (the bluetooth connection type with a wirr connecting them). I don’t think I’ll ever get the airpod type ones because I’d definitely lose them!

Reply

Reese’s thins- DARK CHOCOLATE- kept in the freezer. I had them all to myself last March & then, unfortunately my 2 girls realized their greatness & now they help themselves to my stash.

Reply

Hello, where is the green jacket from in your pics? i love it!
