Coping & Thursday Things!

Andrew didn’t have work yesterday so I was able to make it out to the Runner’s Corner workout!

They did a 3 mile workout where you repeat 1 minute ON followed by a 1 minute FLOAT (not a jog but not all out).  The hardest part of this workout is that you are constantly switching gears.  We did a ton of workouts like this gearing up for our races in 2019 so I know they work really well for me as I try to get stronger.

We did these with a good amount of downhill in them which helps my legs to learn how to turnover faster.  The group is doing short workouts for the next little while until they gear up again for races (if those happen!!) in the summer/fall so it is kind of the perfect time for me to be joining them again.  I didn’t go all out to make sure I don’t get injured but I put in a good effort!

7.12 miles total in the Boston Launch from 2019… I love it when shoes have good memories tied to them.  PS running has not been effecting my milk supply so far and I’ve decided I will back off with my running if it starts to!  As of right now I am very happy with how breastfeeding is going with Beck (<— he makes it SO easy).

IMG 5856

It sure is hard to get out of bed on winter mornings but it is always worth it.

IMG 5853

Beck and Skye both had a doctor’s appointment so that was the big event for the day.

IMG 5867

And Beck slept even more than usual because he had to get shots.

IMG 5874

Oh and the other big event of the day was free pizza via my sister’s coupons.  She always has the best deals.

Now for a few things to talk about…

*It’s my sister’s birthday today.  She doesn’t take birthdays as seriously as I do so I’m going to force her into taking it seriously today and make her party with me:) Flashback photo of us from 30 years ago:)

IMG 1876

*My mom figured out why I am so into the Princess Diana story… She is my mom’s ELEVENTH cousin.  It all makes sense now.

IMG 5794

*My sister-in-law has 5 kids and they just found out that they will be going back to virtual learning… She shared with me her coping mechanisms and they are the same as mine.

Screen Shot 2021 01 05 at 12 44 00 PM

*Knox checks the coop at least 3 times a day for eggs.  PS did I tell you that we did end up having a rooster?!  Luckily, we found a farm close by that took him and said we can visit Ducky (<—Knox named this chicken) whenever we want.

IMG 5687

*My Garmin has been acting crazy on a few of my runs lately!  Mid-run it will just start slowing down my pace and then I’ll speed up to test it and it will say I’m running even slower.  It will then show up like this afterwards… yep, definitely did not run through anybody’s yard/house during my run ha.

IMG 5765

*This last Saturday Andrew found out that it was the last day that my favorite cookies were going to be sold… So he went and bought 18 of them and froze them for me.  He wins.

Do you make birthdays a big deal or not so much?

Who else has a January birthday?  Anybody have a race in January?

Do you prefer the short and super fast intervals or the longer medium fast type intervals when it comes to speed work?

Those of you that have breastfed while training, did it effect your milk supply at all?

I noticed the hershey kisses in the treadmill picture. they have chocolate meltaway and chocolate lava flavors for valentine’s day. the chocolate lava are my favorite. the meltaways are good also. next time you’re out, you should pick some up. i’ll be stocking up so i have a stash to get me through the rest of the school year.
intervals aren’t my favorite workout. i do them anyway because i feel proud of myself for being able to do the higher speeds for any period of time. at 5 in the morning, that’s asking a lot.
have a great day!

And now I need to go get the chocolate lava right now. That sounds so good. Seriously, it really is quite amazing that our bodies (and our brains!) can do that so early in the morning… you absolutely should feel proud. I hope you have a beautiful day Lee and that the school day is going well!

Happy birthday to your sis!
Birthdays are special to me, but I don’t want to do a whole lot besides *not* cook or make complex decisions about what to do, LOL. But my BFF gave me a plastic tiara last year, and I wore that thing ALL DAY (even during my workout).
I go more toward the longer medium-fast workouts because I’m not super-fast on any day :) haha!
I never ramped up to full-on training while breastfeeding, so it never affected my supply. However, my experience is that a baby that feeds more easily helps keep that supply up, even when other factors (stress, dietary changes, lack of sleep) could make it worse. Glad it’s going well!

Hahaha ‘make complex decisions about what to do’… YES! Decision making is the worst. I need to go get a plastic tiara for my sister, I love that you even wore it during your workout. That is totally what I’m finding with Beck, he makes it so easy to keep a good supply because he eats so well. Thanks for sharing because I was wondering if that was the key this time around. I hope you are having a fabulous day!

Ha ok that gps pic is hilarious lol. Quite the crazy run you had ! ;). Are you going to get a new watch?

I remember buying 6 bags of boom chicka pop peppermint white chocolate popcorn when it went on clearance (it’s my favourite!) After Christmas one year lol.

I don’t recall if my milk supply was affected by my running but I wasn’t running long distances while I was nursing (I found it too painful). Just a huge increase in appetite!!!

Reply

Right?! It looks like I was having quite the run! Liz shared an article that said it was happening to a bunch of people so I guess I just need to wait it out?! AHHHH I FORGOT ALL ABOUT THAT POPCORN! I need to see if there are any more bags I can get! Oh my appetite is out of control right now and I get so angry if I go longer than a few hours without eating… I’m way hungrier breastfeeding than when I am pregnant. Have the best day, Gillian!

I ran for the first time in a couple of months ? on Saturday. My GPS shifted everything by a couple of blocks. I didn’t look a my watch the entire run and was a little surprised by my pace at the end so I pulled it up when I got home and was like WAIT, WHAT?! It tracked my distance and pace just fine, but when I looked at the map it was says I ran the whole thing two blocks above where I actually ran. It was bizarre. I will have to show Ross it was weird for you too because he told me I teases me all the time about electronics not working for only me. Lol.

Reply

I want to run with you!! I’m so happy you ran:). Yep, tell Ross it is NOT you haha… turns out this was a big problem with Garmin!! Hopefully I see you soon!!

Happy birthday to your sister!! I like celebrating other people’s birthdays but don’t make a big deal out of my own.

I like shorter, faster intervals, or hill workouts! But longer intervals are so hard mentally for me, especially around a track. If I’m not at a track, the longer intervals don’t feel as hard.

Reply

Thank you so much Mariah! I really need to get in a hill workout! Oh I cannot do the long intervals at a track either, you are not alone in that. Hope your day is off to a great start!

My birthday is on the 22! :) I make my birthday a big deal and start talking about it a month before haha.. my husband never makes a big deal out of his and often says he doesn’t want any presents. This year I’m only buying second hand so I bought myself a present to help my husband out! I breastfed while running and it luckily didn’t effect my milk supply- I was able to run a marathon after each kid while breastfeeding- the human body is amazing! Love your blog!

Happy birthday month Alicia! I love what you are doing this year, what an awesome goal and I bet your husband was appreciative that you took care of the present ha:). You trained and ran a marathon while breastfeeding… you are incredible and you are so right about our bodies. Thank you and please keep in touch!

Oooo I am a pediatric nurse and I HATE giving 2 month shots. They are the worst! Glad Beck could sleep it off.

Reply

Oh I bet that is SO HARD to do!! Yes, I am so glad he slept the rest of the day and now he is doing awesome. PS Andrew is going to do a clinical rotation in pediatrics… he will have to chat with you! I hope you are having a beautiful morning!

Training never affected my milk supply.
One thing I did do once I started running again, is feed and pump right after that………so my body thought the demand was higher than it was. Maybe I just had good supply, maybe it was this, who really knows, but it worked for me.

Happy Birthday HRG sissy!!
I love to make birthdays as special as I can. Even if it’s as simple as picking up In n’ Out for lunch (my younhest’s favorite!). I think birthdays should be filled with all of the favorites!
My old watch (a TomTom) used to do weird pace things too, and it totally drove me nuts! But it never showed that I ran through yards … Ha ha. So weird.
Intervals… Hmmm I “enjoy” both short and long intervals. I guess it depends on my mood. The track at the college by me is closed due to tons of construction happening on campus, but I am so looking forward to doing short fast intervals on the cushy track again!
The picture of Knox with the eggs… Such a cutie!
Have a good Wednesday!

Those mountains are beautiful!!

My husband’s watch did the exact same thing! Our Garmin runs populate to Strava so when I saw his I thought he had been chased by a dog through several yards! He had been running his usual route though, so strange!

Garmin GPS is killing me! My pace will be off by up to 2 minutes/mile.

Happy birthday to your sister!
Oh I make a big deal out of my kids birthdays!! Like, to the point they get a little embarrassed! (I back it off at that point!)
Races in WA are still mostly virtual although a few small short ones are starting to pop up here and there. I haven’t signed up for any because I want to work on speed first!
Oh I like short and fast as opposed to longer and maybe a tad slower. I know that longer is probably better for me but they’re so haarrrrd!!! Maybe I wouldn’t hate them as much if I had a nice downhill section to run on!
As long as I pumped before and after a workout as well as drank a ton of water it didn’t effect my supply. I also didn’t work out at the capacity I am now though.
Have a great day!

– I’m like your sister…birthdays are not a big deal. Especially once I hit 30 – I kind of feel like I’ve been 30ish forever (which isn’t true, I’m definitely closer to 50 than 30anything)
– My speedwork is limited to mile repeats, tempo runs, and hill repeat loop (.2 to .3 miles for 5 of the 6 hills). I’m not sure I could do really short/really fast anymore.

Seems like a great time to get back to your training group, also nice to be connected to people during this time .

We are still pretty locked down here, full time remote learning and Covid cases still high so it might be a long lonely winter…..but I am so so so looking forward to summer and hopefully vaccinations!

Glad to hear that your supply hasn’t been affected with running! I am 6 months postpartum and have noticed a dip in my supply this week when I’ve been pumping, so I’m hoping that it isn’t due to running! I’ve noticed that I’ve been running faster average times lately because I only have so much time to get it done hahaha.

You constantly impress and motivate me with running, motherhood, and life, so thank you! Hope you’re having a great Thursday! :)

A “coop” is where chickens live. A “coup” is the failed event that took place at the United States Capitol yesterday.

I have to be honest, after doing the standard “listening and learning” in June the lack of follow through on that is so disappointing. I came back today hoping there’d be something substantive but I guess my hopes were too high.

Not everyone wants to hear about politics and division. I for one am glad Janae keeps it light. We all need an escape and this is mine. Thank you, Janae!

Beck is plumping up so much! That pic of Brooke holding him is so sweet. And oh man, is it just me or does your sister look so much like your mom in that old picture?! And Skye looks so much like you when you were little!

I just had my birthday on the 4th! I don’t make a big deal, but I also like to make it special. I do like to celebrate others and I’ll definitely be doing that for my kids! My husband doesn’t like to do anything special, so I usually just try to make something special for dinner. For my birthday this year, we took the day off, dropped off my daughter at daycare and went snowboarding at Winter Park. Then we ordered take off at one of our favorite Italian restaurants and picked up cupcakes from a local bakery. It was very special and it was everything I loved! My daughter is 2.5 and her excitement for cupcakes and her enthusiasm during the birthday song made my heart soar! I’m pregnant with my 2nd (I was very safe on the mountain and took it easy) and she’s due 2 days after my daughter’s 3rd birthday, so I’m hoping to do something to make it special for her!
I wasn’t training for any races while I was breastfeeding, I also went pretty long (20 months) but I never noticed any dip in my supply when I did hard workouts. I think you just need to make sure that you are drinking enough water and taking in enough calories and then of course, each body is different!
And I always prefer shorter intervals. I am most definitely a countdown person, so something that I can easily countdown to makes me push harder.
Also, I loved the candy corn m&ms which are basically just white chocolate but i didn’t see them this year. I would seriously buy bags and bags of them to hold on to for later.

January 3rd birthday! A huge group of my running friends back east also have January birthdays, about 10 of us in total. I signed up for the Donut Dash 5k here in Denver that I have done the past two years because well donuts at the finish. That snowballed into signing up for a 10k and then a 15k. Trying to push myself in 2021 since I didn’t run as much as I wanted to in 2020. I ordered from Suss after I saw one of your posts and got to try the peppermint cookie. It was delicious!

Go/ on-float, Go/ on-float, Go/ on-float. Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-bahhh-bahh! Coupled with crazy technology. Just an awesome day. Oh, you saw about the Spotify breach, right?

You are READY TO ROLL in the throwback pic with sis! Love it!! So, does it give you Skye vibes?

Coping mechanisms, yes, smart! Calm the sympathetic nervous system and then take the next best action. It works for all types.

Covid19 will be over in April 2022. I wrote it before, reminder here.

Oh, the rooster! Hehehe. Thanks for the circle back, but no details. Curious.

Birthdays aren’t a big deal.
Knox is so sweet in that picture.
Prefer med-long intervals now (used to be opposite).
ANDREW WINS THE YEAR…..what a guy!!!!

I’m currently breastfeeding my 5 month old and running (about 40 miles per week, I’m base-building for hopefully a fall marathon!). I haven’t noticed any impacts on milk supply, but wow am I hungry! I have to be really careful that I eat enough.
