Just a full on blizzard outside at the end of my run yesterday.

7 miles yesterday and we are supposed to do a speed workout today (<- but only if the streets are clear because I cannot imagine trying to do speed on snow).

I saw that about Boston! But to be honest, I have zero idea why they picked that date since it’s the day after the Chicago Marathon and a lot of people typically do both. Plus Chicago has been set for months so you’re telling me no one who was organizing Boston knew about that date? Obviously I have no idea what the conversations were when it came to picking the date so I definitely keep that in mind! Just seems super weird to me. It almost is coming across has they are forcing people to pick in the hopes that each will have a smaller field this year…

It is kind of confusing that they chose the same weekend! I wonder if there will be anyone that is able to do Chicago and Boston… wouldn’t that be fun to do them back to back ha. I agree, maybe it will help keep race sizes smaller? Have the best rest of your day, Maureen!

Reply

My guess for that date is that it’s a holiday – same as when it takes place in April. Perhaps they wanted the same type of city closures.

Reply

Yep I get it. I grew up in Chicago and that race is is always Columbus Day weekend too. That’s why it confuses me!

Reply

It is because there are very limited choices. They needed a day when it would work to close so (SO) many roads and this was it.
It will be interesting to see what happens with these Fall marathons especially as we begin to deal with virus mutations. I’m pretty sure that all the people freaking out about how to get to Chicago/Boston/London should take a breath and realize they will be lucky if any one of them actually happens…. (work in healthcare so actually know what I’m talking about :-))

Reply

Oh definitely would be lucky for them to happen! I think people just want the hope of the races happening so that’s what they’re leaning towards! A friend of mine is an ER doctor and he doesn’t think big races will happen this year but it’s better to have some hope then just think they won’t at all.

I hope Boston and NYC happen this year! I miss races, even if spectating and not running. I think October would be good timing! Beautiful fall weather and scenery.

Getting outside for a walk, a mini dance break or good cup of tea recharge me in the middle of the day!

Reply

I do too! I need to look up and see what NYC is saying about it happening this year! I think I need to try that mini dance break right now:). Enjoy the rest of your day, Mariah!

Ahhhhhhhhh the weather in Boston in October is amazing. The course would have full fall color at that time. It’s pretty common to see overcast with a high in the 40s or 50s with a lot of wind. Pretty solid for running, really. I hope people get to run it, even if it winds up being a lot different than previous years.

Reply

HEY YOU! I really hope that it happens this year too and I bet the fall colors are unreal. Have the best day Victoria and wish we could eat some swedish fish together on a run today ha;)

Boston weather is mid-October is hard to predict. But it very easily could be very warm. Usually the Tufts 10k is run that day (they’ve gladly stepped aside and plan to announce a later date) and twice when I’ve run it is has been in the 80s mid-day. Climate change has definitely affected fall in New England. But mid-October is better than mid-September when it was supposed to be last fall.

I like to sleep cold and dark with a fan for white noise. Though it sucks back when we could travel since I couldn’t easily have those things on trips.

I am still figuring out the best mid-day pick me up. I’d be the happiest person if I could achieve that for myself!

Reply

Hey Jessey! It seems like Boston weather must always be hard to predict ha. I hope that it is perfect weather for everyone running in October. Let me know when you find that mid-day pick me up… it helps SO much. Enjoy the rest of your day, Jessey!

Boston in October is BEAUTIFUL. I went to school in Mass and that time of year in that part of the country is absolutely perfect. Chilly mornings but lots of sunshine, insanely beautiful leaves….ooooh I want to do it! There’s also lots of fun October/Halloween stuff to do (Andrew would love it), Salem goes all out and there’s apple picking and farms that sell cider donuts….
I still have a big qualifying time from 2019, depending on how they do that (I can’t find any info?) maybe I’ll sign up. haha. Although we just found out we’re probably moving to Hawaii in August so…that’s a long flight. haha. :)
My sentence for the day is it’s expected to SNOW!! We haven’t had real snow now in a couple of years! I’m excited, even if it means more school cancelations lol.

Reply

Oh that makes me so happy… I bet it is stunning! I’m feeling tempted to do it for fun too and that is so good to hear that Andrew would love it too. I bet going to school there was awesome. PLEASE keep me updated on if you sign up and HAWAII… this is HUGE news. I need more info! I hope that you have a blast in the snow!

Hey Janae!! I have really great news… a few weeks ago, I moved to Austin. It’s been great to be here, but also a bit lonely because a lot of activities are still online. I’ve made some church friends online and even some dance friends in person (but they’re a bit older and all have kids, so we’re kind of in different life stages), and I’ve been talking to several friends who live in different places on the phone, but I’ve realized it’s just not the same as seeing someone in person.

Anyways, yesterday I went to a running club meetup and met two super sweet girls my age! One is even working on writing her dissertation, so we were able to commiserate together ha. It totally made my day and I’m so excited to run with them again.

Thank you so much for being such an encouragement. Loneliness is no joke and I am so sorry for anyone who is experiencing it.

Reply

Moving and loneliness are definitely no joke! Your comment jumped out at me and I’ll be thinking of you. I’m in a super different stage of life as you but right after my divorce (mid 40s with a teen) things got lonely. It got better and I know yours will too!

Reply

Hey Clare! That loneliness really is so so hard but I am THRILLED that you were able to go to the running club and meet some new friends. I hope you live close to each other and can run often together. Thanks for the update and keep them coming. I am cheering for you friend and I love your emails. Have a beautiful day.

Hi Janae, obviously the weather is different every year but I ran my first marathon virtually just outside of Boston this year on October 11th and the weather was pretty perfect! It was in the low 50s when I finished and kind of overcast which I thought was pretty nice for a marathon! Hope you can get your speed work done today if it’s not too snowy and that you have a great day!!

Reply

Claire, congrats to you on running your first marathon virtually, that is amazing and so good to hear about the weather being perfect! Hopefully that same thing happens this year. After your first marathon are you wanting to do another? Thank you friend, I hope your day is a great one too!

What a beautiful day to run in the snow but speed work does seem dangerous on snow ?

How fun to strength train with your sister. I am 1000% more like to do strength work if I can do it with a friend.

It would be really exciting to see the big races come back.

I have never tried a weighted blanket but I am very curious.

I hope you are having a wonderful day!

Reply

It really was so pretty and it definitely cleared up on the roads for the speed today so it did happen! Right?! Having someone to strength train just makes it so much easier. Thank you so much Beth and I hope your Wednesday is going great so far.

Good morning!!
Boston/New England weather in October is unpredictable – could be 80, could be snowing!! The fall foliage can be awesome at that time though, so a nice distraction :o)
I love the idea of a weighted blanket, but they’re too hot for me and I feel like something is trying to suffocate me in my sleep. My boyfriend loves his though – uses it most of the year.
I am in the same boat as Jessey (above) – if I could figure out my perfect midday pick-me-up, I would be so happy!
Sentence of the day “Oh look, more shoveling to do…”
Have a wonderful Wednesday. Janae!!

Reply

Hey Janine! Oh wow, that does sound like quite the range as far as weather goes for the marathon. I bet the views are a great distraction haha. That is how I felt when I was pregnant too… it was too suffocating! Good luck finding that pick-me-up and let me know when you do. Good luck with the shoveling and thank you so much Janine!

I just got a weighted blanket for my husband’s birthday present! He’s getting it tomorrow. I usually get hot when I sleep so I don’t think I would like it, but he doesn’t have that problem. I’m hoping it helps him because he hasn’t been sleeping well lately.
Good luck getting your speedwork in! Oh and one last thing- a 20 minute nap totally recharges me in the middle of the day. I know it’s hard to do that with multiple kids though.

Reply

Happy birthday to your husband tomorrow and I hope he loves it (ps you should just test it out one night because I know people that sleep hot but still love it)! Thank you friend and I really hope that you get a 20 minute nap asap… I think I’m going to today too! Thanks Jenny.

Hello…love the pictures! And you’re a brave runner running out in the snow like that…I am not a fan of it. It snowed a bit yesterday here in New Jersey but a dusting so I still was able to walk this morning. Tomorrow should be better for running.

I just discovered the weighted blanket and finally purchased one right before the holidays–I love it! I had no idea that it would help me sleep so much better. Now my sisters bought one each and I bought one for my son and Mom. My son forgot to take it back to campus so he literally came back last weekend to pick it up. He really loves sleeping with it. I can’t believe I hadn’t purchased this earlier in my life.

Reply

Hey Damarys! I hope the dusting that you got is pretty out there and my sister agrees with you and is also not a fan of running in the snow. I am SO happy that you are loving your weighted blanket, it makes the biggest difference. I love that your son drove back, I would do the same thing. Have a beautiful day friend!

I need just a little snack before I go to bed. It’s usually a little cereal. I don’t know what it is. Without it, it takes me so much longer to fall asleep.

I love this and I know you’ve done it for years! I will try it tonight and report back:). Have a beautiful day, Erica!

Not related to this post but I wanted to make those cinnamon scones you made last week- where did you find cinnamon chips?!

Reply

Hey Sara! Oh I hope you love them:). I found them at Walmart. They were the Hershey’s brand. Good luck and let me know what you think!

Hi Janae! That picture with Skye and the blueberries cracks me up. I totally agree that fresh air totally recharges you, even if it’s just walking to the mailbox and back. Can’t agree with you more about the sleep too, I read once that for every mile per week you run that’s an extra minute of sleep over day. So if you’re running 30 mpw then sleep an extra half an hour per day. Happy Wednesday!!

Reply

Oh I love that rule for sleep and mileage, thanks for sharing Amy! I hope you are having a great Wednesday too and that you can get out for some fresh air this afternoon!

I have been contemplating a weighted blanket. May be a future purchase.
Question: what leggings do you like for postpartum running? Do you need more support postpartum or has your active pregnancy helped with recovery?

Reply

Hey Jen! I’ve been wearing my normal leggings but just in a size bigger and they seem to do the trick. They are high waisted anyways so I love that support. Let me know if you have any other questions and I hope your day is going great so far!

Hi! Have you heard of the book Breathe by James Nestor? I thought of you while reading because it’s all about our breath and the science behind your oxygen and how it affects your body and sports/energy output (and apparently there is a “right” way to breathe!)

Reply

I will totally have to read that next… THANK YOU!!

Hello Janae,
Great post. Love the pictures of the snow and all you do with the kiddos.
I have a question, what is the name, brand or if you can include a link of the front-side baby carrier that you are holding Beck in?
Thanks so much!
