Winter Running Tip + I’m a Border Collie.

Our area had a little bit of new snow yesterday morning but not enough for it to be slippery.  Something that I love to do when it is slippery and there is a lot more snow on the roads is to wear a pair of trail shoes.  The traction on the bottom of trail shoes is even better than on normal running shoes so they help to keep me from slipping around on the run.

Beck knows exactly how to keep me from leaving for my run right away in the morning…  He pulls out all of his best smiles and snuggles which makes it near impossible to leave.  I waited to go until he fell asleep again:)

PS we were watching this episode on Modern Family the other day and now Andrew calls me a border collie.  I go a little crazy without running.

Kelly recommended yesterday that I listen to the Princess Diana series on the podcast ‘You’re Wrong About’ and now I am hooked.  You guys always have the best recommendations and I’m already looking forward to listening to the rest of the series on my runs for the rest of the week.

Not sure why I took a picture with this large chunk of snow but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

IMG 5417

This is the most climbing I have done in a long time and I felt muscles working that haven’t worked in about a year:).   Time to work on my cadence.

I came home to Brooke trying to convince Beck to start playing with his toys.

My view from the computer yesterday:)

Andrew had another gift card from work for Chipotle (and your comments yesterday made me need Chipotle in my life) so we took advantage of that with some burritos.

And Skye is SOOO into building right now.  She goes straight for the blocks when she wakes up in the morning.

These kids of ours love going from the hot tub to rolling around in the snow and then back to the hot tub.  You could not pay me to attempt this.

I’ll finish off today by sharing my gratitude for hot chocolate and my fireplace.

I love that you love Modern Family! I have all 11 seasons and cannot get enough of it!

Have a great day!!

It really is the best show ever! Thanks Monica and I hope you have a great day too!

Not related to any of the questions, but if Skye loves building try Magnatiles. I bought them for my oldest nephew for Christmas one year and they are standing the rest of time as a favourite toy through to my second nephew.

You are the best… thanks Lindsey, I just ordered the magna tiles. Skye is going to be so excited! Have a beautiful day!

OMG I neeeeeeed hot chocolate now. Our bike room is so cold and I’ve been spending so much time in there.

Reply

YOU ARE MY HERO!!! I don’t know how you are doing all of this biking. I hope you had some amazing hot chocolate!

Reply

Do you have a favorite brand of hot chocolate? Or recipe? I want to start drinking more of it but I am never impressed with the kinds I get!

Reply

Hey Kelly! YES! I love the Stephens brand of hot chocolate and we always use milk with it (it tastes much better that way compared to water)! Have a great day friend. https://amzn.to/3n0rjsG

Trail running shoes are my favorite winter running tip too. Brooks Cascadia GTX are my current favorite. Of course Oiselle mittens, with hand warmer packs inside are a necessity too!

Reply

I NEED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THESE MITTENS… those sound perfect! Hope you are having a great day Angie.

I’d love to know how you work on your cadence! This is one of my main running goals for 2021! I have also registered for a few virtual challenges. Coming back from sickness in the fall, I found distance virtual challenges (i.e. 202.1 miles in 2021) so motivating without putting pressure on my body to go faster. It’s a pretty awesome way to build a base!

Reply

Hey Mel! Let’s work on it together. Really I just focus on it more and pay attention to a faster leg turnover! Sometimes I will count to make sure I am hitting my goal too. Downhill speed work REALLY helps me with cadence because it kind of forces a faster leg turnover which then makes it feel more normal when I am running flat/uphill. I am so sorry that you were sick this fall and I love that you found some virtual challenges for this year. You are amazing.

I will probably be asleep early on New Years Eve lol but given this year might try and wake up to ring in the new year.

My saucony pro for sure.

We have gotten a lot of time as a family just me my guy and River and we have been able to spend a fair but of time snowshoing in the mountains and making memories.

Also I ended selling an old coat I didn’t use and with Christmas money I bought a bright red puffy from Aritzia and for some reason that makes me so happy lol.

Beck is so adorable. I hope you have a great day with your family Janae!

Reply

Hahah yeah there is no way I’ll be up until midnight tomorrow night! I would really love to come snowshoe with you guys. I love that you have been able to do that together. YAY for a red puffy and thank you so much friend. Hope your Wednesday has been great so far!

Most used running shoes this year are my Brooks Glycerins and my Brooks Cascadias. Number one winter running tip? Coming home to hot chocolate made with hot milk and a scoop of IdealLean’s Chocolate Cherry Protein Power….LOVE this! And as an owner or border collies…they make the best running and snuggling partners!

Reply

I LOVE your running tip and I need to try some of that chocolate cherry protein powder. Your combo is great for recovery and for warming up:) I love that you have a border collie! Have a beautiful day and keep enjoying those glycerins and cascadias:)

My best winter tip is always wearing a gaiter/buff around my neck, even if I don’t need to pull it up over my face–keeping my neck warm somehow makes it 1,000x easier to breathe in the cold air.

I have NO New Year’s Eve plans and will probably go to bed at 10:30 and then complain that I stayed up too late. Clearly the life of the party!!

I’m really grateful for how sunny it is today! It’s been overcast lately, so it was really fun to see the sun come up and STAY out! Will definitely need to get some Vitamin D today.

Reply

I totally agree with you… those gaiters/buffs make the biggest difference! BAHAH and we sound so alike with our nighttime habits! Enjoy that sunshine, Vitamin D is healing! Thanks Kristin!

Reply

I laughed about the hot tub —> snow —> hot tub comment. The only time I’ve done that as an adult is with lots of alcohol in my system (and I was about 25). But it seems like something your cold loving husband would do :)

Reply

BAHAHA I bet that night was so much fun! Yep, Andrew joins them in the craziness! I hope you are having a really great day so far. Thanks Jessey!

My only New Years Eve plans so far are getting Indian food with my daughter. That may be the extent of it.

Right now I am super grateful for someone new in my life who I’m not talking about a whole lot yet but… he’s definitely one of the good ones.

Reply

Indian food with your daughter = the perfect New Years Eve plans. Enjoy ever second and your last sentence made me smile so big:).

Reply

That mug is adorable!! Do you have a source for that cutie?

Reply

Hey!! I got it at Target a few years ago! I tried to find it online but I couldn’t, I’m sorry! I hope your day is going great:)

Reply

Hey Janae! Which hair elastics are you using in your running photo above? I am in need of new ones that will hold long and heavy hair in place.

Thanks and have a great day!!

Reply

Hey Anna! I have these ones: https://amzn.to/3n1RYoE . They are my absolute favorite and they don’t leave creases in my hair and they don’t move. I hope you love them too!

Reply

Hot and cold therapy is evidently very good for you—the kids know what’s up! ;) I love Beck’s little blue onesie outfit, where do you get his sweet clothes from? So happy for you that you’re back to doing what you love! ❤️

Reply

Hahah so true… they are just ahead of me on these beneficial therapies:). Lately I have been getting a lot of his stuff from cotton on kids! They have so many cute things and here is the link:). Thanks Kristen, enjoy the rest of your day! https://shopstyle.it/l/bqh8c

Baby smiles are the best they never get old. My two go to shoes this year have been the home one one Rincon and my Salomon trail shoes.
My kids stay up better tgan I do. I celebrate with New York then head to bed. Lol
My winter running tip is to do my warm up around the block a couple times in case I have to do a wardrobe adjustment. I can’t stand having to tie my jacket around my waist
Taking my 13 and a half year old dog for a walk at a very slow pace helps me to slow down contemplate and pray it is the most peaceful part of my day.

Reply

Winter running tip: Dress for the weather. I have it down to what I need at 5 degree increments, lol. But now I am thinking I need to get trail shoes. They would do double-duty for hikes this summer and if we camp anywhere that has trails……..
When our kids were young we would let them (try) to stay up for New Year’s, but they rarely made it when they were little. However, some of my favorite pictures are of them on New Year’s where they fell asleep, lol. Now they are 16 and 20, so they have no issues lasting until midnight, ha!
I have alternated the last two years between Brooks Glycerin and Asics Kayano. My Asics are always my long run shoe, I like the Brooks for the cushioning, especially on the day after those long runs.
I am grateful that I am getting to see all the sweet pictures in your blog since I am home this week! My work has your blog blocked, so while I get to read what you write in the email, I never get to see the pictures.
Now, I’m headed back through the comments for trail running recommendations…….

Reply

I love that you have your winter wardrobe DOWN… it makes the biggest difference and I fully support you getting some trail shoes. Haha I bet that picture is awesome and I’m pretty sure Knox and Skye could make it longer tomorrow night than I can. The Glycerin cushioning is just the best. Thank you for your sweet words, that means a lot and I’m glad you have the week off. Thanks Jen!

Reply

Hahaha I am a border collie too then! I need some exercise and fresh air to feel happy!

Brooks Launch- love Brooks!

Reply

Border Collies unite:) We need it for sanity! Oh the Launch are so great! Enjoy the rest of your day Mariah!

My most used running shoe this year would have to be the Hoka Clifton 6 and now 7. I don’t know if shoe updates typically suck or have mixed reviews, but I’d say Hoka hit the nail on the head with the 7 – I love it. And my husband even got me their new gold pair for Christmas!

For New Year’s I’m going to make a traditional Brazilian treat called brigadeiros. You should look them up, I feel like you would love them!

Reply

My running partners LOVE the Hoka Clifton! I’m so glad the updates on the 7 have been so great. Just looked them up and yep, I would love those and so would Brooke with all of those sprinkles. ENJOY!

Reply

Beck is looking at Brooke like she is wackadoo for suggesting he play with his toys!!

Winter running tip-always wear Chapstick (and sunscreen). If it’s super cold, you can put a handwarmer in your tights pocket whether that’s on the leg or the back pocket (my favorite).

The Asics DynaFlyte 4 was my most worn running shoe with a Salomon Speedcross for trails. I made a major shoe and orthotics change in February and it was a game changer.

I’m grateful for technology today so I can chat with my family-we live an ocean apart.

Reply

Hahah he really is looking at her like that! Oh you are SO right about the chapstick and I’m going to try your handwarmer tip in the back pocket, my buns were cold today. THANKS kelly! I’m so glad that your shoe/orthotic change made such a big difference! I’m grateful you can do that too! I hope you are having a beautiful day, Kelly!

I should have worn trail shoes yesterday, not because of snow, but mud! We had our first rain of the season on Monday so sidewalks were a little slippery.

We typically celebrate New Years with New York so we can be in bed at 9:00 ;) We’ll have our last 2 hot chocolate bombs and snuggle by the fire.

I’m grateful for a working heater! Now that I’m post menopausal, the hot flashes have diminished and I find myself unusually cold (another weird hormonal issue.)

Reply

MUD!! Oh I bet your calves were sore after that run (mine always are so tired after muddy runs)! I think I’ll copy you and celebrate with New York too! Thank goodness for heaters, I’m with you on that. Enjoy the rest of your day, Kathy!

Reply

I love your work view!
After today’s rainy day run, I think my winter run tip is to bring with you or stash dry run gear in a waterproof bag somewhere to change into mid run! Gloves, hat, coat, shorts, shirt, socks, shoes etc!
Our New Years plans are to see how long each of us can stay up! My husband and oldest will no doubt stay up but my youngest and myself will most likely be asleep by 9! But seriously, I don’t know what to do with them! Give me ideas please! Lol!
My most worn run shoes this past year are my New Balance and Mizuno road shoes.
I’m feeling grateful for a hot shower (once the pain of chafing subsided of course!)!
Have a great day!

Reply

It’s the best work view:). That is SUCH a great tip Jenny, thank you and I’m going to copy you on that! Good luck on staying up… I’ll be hitting the sack at 9 too! I’m thinking we will just do board games, treats, nachos and maybe a living room dance party! You’ll have to let me know what you guys do. YES to the hot showers, so grateful for those! Thanks Jenny, you too!

Reply

Yes! A border collie. That is you Janae! We got an Australian Shep this year and they are very similar to the border collie and I have never run (and through deep snow) so much in my entire life. Archie and Janae both wake up ready to run! Now I am going to feel happy every time I am out with Archie thinking I’m running like Janae! Yay!!!

Reply

Oh really!? YAY… I’m glad Archie and I are so alike:). Someday hopefully I can come on a run with you two! Enjoy the rest of your day, Belle!

Reply

Hi Janae! I love the ghosts! Sadly I had to stop wearing them after a while because I needed a support shoe. I still got about 320 miles on them though. How often do you switch your shoes? I do when I hit 400 miles, I guess my tip is that garmin will track your miles on your gear for you.
Happy Wednesday!

Reply

I’m glad you were able to figure out what was best for your body/feet and switch over to a support shoe. I need to track my mileage on my watch… so cool that it does that. I just go off of feel and once they start feeling too worn or my knees/ankles are cranky then I switch over. I’m guessing it is usually around 400-500 miles. Happy Wednesday to you too Amy!

Hi! Which hot tub did you end up purchasing? I’m in the market and am overwhelmed with options. Any buyers remorse?

Reply

Hey Alex! We went with the Bullfrog A7! We absolutely love it and have zero remorse. Somebody is in it every single day and it makes winter so much more bearable. I hope you get one and love it too. Let me know! PS Andrew is going to write a post soon about the upkeep etc.

Reply

Beck’s little facial expressions are cracking me up! He’s getting to such a fun stage. I can remember rolling in the snow from the hot tub as a kid and now I’m Usain Bolt running from the hot tub into the warm house ;) And today I’m grateful that I can move my body! Thank you for the prompt, I’ve been feeling a little sad for myself as my sprained ankle is taking way longer to heal than I imagined and I haven’t been able to run, but I just need to remember that I CAN still do yoga and some elliptical and light strength training and be joyful for that! Running will come back eventually!

Reply

Hahaha I’m like you… Usain all the way! We should count it as speed work. I am so sorry that your ankle isn’t cooperating with you and I really hope that you are back running asap. Grateful you can still get that movement, we need it! Keep me updated with how you are doing friend! Thanks Michelle!

LOL your kids going from snow to hot tub. A couple weeks ago we got a crazy 40 inches of snow!! I mentioned how I wanted to make a snow angel and my husband dared me to do it in a bikini. Luckily we got a hot tub in July. So I made my husband go in the snow first. He decided to dive face first in the snow which he is crazy. Then I went and fell on my back to make a snow angel in a bikini. The funny part was our backyard slopes downhill and the snow was super fluffy so I got stuck for a moment. Finally I made it out of the snow and back into the hot tub. Was definitely tingly as I warmed up. I now wonder how people do the polar plunge without a hot tub after though. Oh and we made sure to video both of us doing this so we have proof and I could share my craziness with my friends. After one time though I am good for now lol.

Reply

FORTY INCHES OF SNOW and you did a snow angle in a bikini… you are my hero! That is brave ha. Oh I bet the tingles were out of control and I bet your husband was laughing so hard when you got stuck for a minute. I could never do a polar plunge. Definitely avoid doing this again ha. Have a great day friend!

Reply

yes we were not expecting 40 inches. They were calling for maybe 18 inches and then we got dumped on. I don’t think I have ever seen so much snow at once!! And that was before the official first day of winter. Not sure what to expect the rest of winter now…

Reply

I LOVE You’re Wrong About! It’s my new favorite podcast — I’ve been binging it over the past month or so!

Reply

It really is way too good… you’ll have to let me know what your favorite episodes are. Have the best rest of your day, Catherine!

Brooks Ghosts were also my most worn running shoes – I also have a pair just for work, I love them so much. I’ll be working new years and NYE – so probably won’t be staying up until midnight.
Gratitude – for being able to return things to the mall without any lines!
Also, I appreciate the snow photos – it doesn’t snow where I live and I love seeing the photos!

Reply

I love that you have a pair of Ghosts for work too… they are the best. YAY for no lines and come visit sometime and I’ll take you skiing here:). Enjoy the rest of your day!

Reply

What trail shoes do you like to wear in the winter? I have Saucony Excursions with Goretex but I’m always looking for something new!

Reply

Ah what an excellent idea to wear trail shoes on snowy paths! Thanks!

You make me want a hot tub! Do you find the maintenance for it is a lot of work?

No NYE plans here. I might stay up until 12 but honestly I love sleep so much and I’m excited for 3 days of sleeping in haha!
