12 Things to Talk About…

Good morning everyone!  I have a few things to talk about with you so let’s get started!

*Beck went on his first walk a few days ago before winter hit and it has snowed almost every day since then.

*Those days and nights are still mixed up for Beck.  It’s amazing how quickly you can spoil a baby when you decide you want to hold him all day long.

IMG 3123

*And if I’m not holding him, then there are a bunch of other helpers that want to hold him.

IMG 3058

PS Knox told me that he wants me to only buy matching clothing for him and Beck now.  PPS you should have seen his sweet smile when he realized he will now have someone to share his bunk bed with (in a few years:).

IMG 3050

IMG 3057

*We have been spoiled rotten with food.  Each meal feels gourmet to me and it will be a sad day when my kids and Andrew have to adjust back to my cooking;)

IMG 3119

*My running partner Emilee brought over a box of See’s candy and goodness gracious does it feel good to eat chocolate without dealing with heartburn afterwards!  The scotchmallow piece will forever be my favorite… chocolate + caramel + marshmallow heaven.

IMG 3452

*I started Gilmore Girls from the start again to watch during the time I am spending nursing right now.  With Skye I watched Friends while I breastfed and with Brooke I watched Friday Night Lights when I breastfed/pumped.  Thank goodness for good TV shows to watch at 3 in the morning ha.

IMG 3082

*I may have done this in my hospital room before getting in my bed because after all of those pregnant miles… I just wanted to have run the day I gave birth too;)  Andrew was laughing pretty hard seeing me in my hospital gown doing this.

IMG 2871

*Skye loves Beck BUT she is definitely dealing with some adjustments now that she isn’t the ‘baby’!  We are finding that she does really well when she feels like she has official jobs such as getting Beck’s diaper when he needs a new one and delivering my water to me when I’m feeding him.  Each day she is doing a bit better but Beck definitely rocked her world ha.

IMG 3195

*This is from Scott Fauble’s book and I couldn’t agree more.  As the weather gets crazier, just remember that those runs are the ones that we remember and really pay off on race day!

IMG 3180

*I love seeing these two together.  A lot.

IMG 3167

*If you need to cry some happy tears today… Watch this clip about Chris Nikic becoming the first person with down syndrome to become an Ironman!!!

Our baby had his days and nights mixed up, too! The only thing that helped was making sure everything was super dark and super quiet during the middle of the night feedings (I did no tv for a few nights… brutal). Once I got really strict about that, he mostly did great and only was up partying in the night maybe 2 more times!

Reply

I’m going to copy you on this and not watch a show while I feed… I didn’t even think about that but it really should help. Thanks so much Sammie! Have a wonderful day!

When my son was born I think his day night confusion lasted a few days. It has been over 2 years now so I may be delusional! I would leave the TV and the lights on all day, even during nap time. Once it got to be evening, I would turn off as many lights as I could and turned any volume down. It seemed to help quickly.

As for See’s candies, the Molasses chips are AMAZING! Scotch Mallows are a close second. I think last time I was in California I bought the pumpkin truffles and those were also really good. My husband bought the Egg Nog Truffles and those were also good. Wow, I didn’t think that would be a hard question to answer… everything I have had from them has been great.

Reply

Oh that’s a fabulous idea Kelly! I’ll try that today. Hahah it’s definitely a hard choice so I think your answer should be a box of a bunch of different kinds❤️! Have a beautiful day!

Reply

I second this! All the lights and noises during the day, even while he naps on you. And come night darkness and quiet. It took my daughter maybe a week to adjust but it WILL happen (even sometimes you think it won’t)

It is absolutely not possible to spoil a baby! Little Beck doesn’t even realize that you and he aren’t the same person yet and he needs those cuddles :). He’s lucky he’s got adoring older siblings to help as well!

Reply

That’s so true… I love hearing that! Thanks Rachel and I hope your Wednesday is a really great one!

Reply

The best part of today will be going to bed tonight. I’m in for a long busy day.

Congratulations!!!! He’s beautiful.

Reply

I hope the day speeds by for you today Lee and that your bed is extra comfortable tonight! Thank you!

Reply

He is just the sweetest little thing!!! AHHH! I can totally relate to your experience with Skye and Beck being close in age–my kids are close and boy was it an adjustment for my first!! I’m still not sure she’s forgiven me. ;-)
My son was born right when the new Gilmore Girls was released on Netflix and I watched that when I was feeding him!
My favorite was always the Bordeaux bars…soooooooo good!

Reply

Hahah yep, I’m not sure when skye will forgive me either. Good to know we aren’t alone in this! Oh I forgot about the new season of GG! I’ll have to rewatch those too. Have a beautiful day Mollie!

Beck is so precious!
Scotchmallows are also my favorite. One year for my birthday my parents gave me a box of all Scotchmallows. It was one of my favorite gifts ever.
My husband is off work today so that’s my best part of today.

Reply

Off to go get a box of scotchmallows! Your parents are the best! I hope you have an amazing day with your husband, Celeste!

I love rewatching the classics like Friends, Gilmore Girls, Parks and Rec. But I think I’m gonna add Schitt’s Creek and Hart of Dixie to that list, such feel-good shows :)

Reply

I’ll have to watch both of those!!! Thanks for sharing Mariah and have a happy Wednesday!

Sweet baby love! Congratulations to your family. I’ve followed you for years but have never commented. I wanted to say that I was in Panama this weekend and my husband participated in the iron man race as well, Chris Nikic had an amazing race and to see the support around him was incredible! We saw him several times on the race course and it was so inspiring!

Reply

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for sharing with me. I bet that was incredible to be there watching Chris accomplish his dreams. And huge congrats your husband! What a fun weekend. Have a beautiful day Amber!

That’s so funny about you wanting to run the day you gave birth- I can definitely relate! With my son, I ran throughout the pregnancy but because of the way the timing worked out (I ran in the morning, went into labor that night and then gave birth the following morning) it was impossible for me to run on the actual day- I’m still kind of mad about that!
Enjoy this time! I love that newborn period where all you have to do is feed, cuddle and love them. So simple and precious.

Reply

That is exactly our schedule and I love it! Oh I so relate with you Jenny! That is exactly what happened with Brooke!! Have a beautiful day.

Reply

I just want to say Congratulations! Beck is absolutely perfect and in my opinion there is no such thing as a spoiled baby!

My baby never had her days/nights mixed up.

I read to take her outside during the day as much as possible and to keep the house super well lit during the day.

Maybe this will help. She was also born in the morning, so who knows. Maybe it was easier for her to sleep at night from the beginning.

I’ve watched Grey’s Anatomy multiple times.

Best part of the day will be spending it with our veteran :)

Happy Wednesday!

I second not watching shows at night, a good substitute for me was reading a book on my phone as the light wasn’t so bright! If you haven’t read it yet I recommend Where The Crawdad Sings- I read that book so fast even though I only read it during night nursing! I hope you are able to get some rest and movement to keep your energy up! Enjoy!

I think babies are born with their days/nights mixed up. They are lulled to sleep by the motion of mom during the day while in utero, only to want to party as soon as mom lays down to sleep. Try giving him more stimuli during the day, and keep nighttime dark & quiet. Use earbuds for an audiobook/music/podcast if you need something to help keep YOU awake ;P
I’ve never heard of See’s…off to investigate. Have a great day, Janae! Enjoy those baby snuggles for me!

Reply

I wanted to add…I’m so jealous you can eat chocolate while nursing! I couldn’t with any of my babies. It gave them terrible bellyaches.

Reply

Gilmore Girls, such a fun rewatch, I think I have done it a couple of times.
I can remember being up in the night with a newborn and satisfying that breastfeeding hunger. Sometimes I was full on cooking to entertain myself.

Reply

Hi Janae! I totally forgot about scotchmallows! My aunt’s favorite one is one with white chocolate and lemon. Thanks for posting and keeping us updated and have a great day/night!

Reply

Ooh, I am 26 weeks and I just cannot wait for food and sweets to taste good again! So jealous haha! Congratulations on your sweet baby!

Beck is so sweet, I can see why everyone is wanting to hold him!

Skye reminds me of my 2nd daughter & son, they are the same age apart. When we brought her baby brother home and my MIL asked “what do you think about the new baby” She replied “I don’t want that baby, and I don’t need that baby”. I promise she’s actually very sweet, lol. They ended up being the closest little playmates, it’s just such a change for the first few days.

I do remember I would do an evening bath for the baby just to keep them awake for a bit around 6p.m., right after dinner. And resisting the urge to make it quiet during the day.

All the best!

Oh my gosh, scotchmallows are the BEST. I did not grow up near a See’s, but my grandparents would send them to us and I have so many happy memories with those. And funnily enough I just ordered some yesterday. :-)

Skye was already looking grown up, but seeing her with Beck really makes her look like a big sister! So so sweet to see all of them together. I am glad you’re all doing well and have so much good food!

I waterjogged for 25 minutes this morning as part of my pool workout–I used to think water jogging was so weird, but now I realize it is a great workout! That was definitely a highlight for me today!

I love that you’re watching Gilmore Girls! That and Friends are my two shows that never get old. I’ve been telling people that life was fine until Netflix decided to take Friends off in 2020. Coincidence? I don’t think so!

Reply

Knox sounds like he’s going to be a great big brother! I really enjoyed re-watching The Good Wife on Netflix. There were a lot of little details that I had forgotten watching it each week when it was on TV. It was such a good show.

Reply

Janae – have you read Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker? It goes through all the sleep cycles of infants – adults and how it changes through the years. I don’t remember the details but it does explain a newborn’s sleep cycles. And it would be great education to see how the cycles are different for kids as they age. Would definitely be a good read for you right now.

And I guarantee you will continue your good sleeping habits after reading it! It goes into detail about what a lack of sleep does to the human brain. Very interesting stuff.

My favorite Sees candy are the vanilla cremes with milk chocolate. Not sure what the official name is- but now I need to try those scotchmallows!

Great choice on Gilmore Girls! Fun fact – when Rory gets to college, Marty or “naked boy”, is my cousin :)

I’m so happy for Brooke and Knox! They look just smitten! And Skye will be too one day!

Reply

I know it’s hard but this makes me miss those newborn days so much. So happy for you guys, Beck is such a beautiful addition.

Congratulations on Beck! What an amazing family you have! With respect to day/night mix-up, I feel like the other comments have provided really good advice already. What helped us was to basically follow all the advice from Dr. Harvey Karp (founder of the Happiest Baby series and the Snoo). He has a helpful website and blog: https://www.happiestbaby.com/pages/blog

Also, I would highly recommend watching the Great British Baking Show. That was my nursing show, and the whole family got super into and now we like to try making dessert recipes from the show.

I LOVE SEES CANDIES. True story: I haven’t bought it since, oh, 2004, because I have ZERO willpower. And I am 5000000% about the Victoria Toffee. It’s the best (to me…).

Growth and changes hit people differently, but I love that Skye is enjoying having “specific tasks”–and while it’s hard to not be “the baby” anymore, I hope she enjoys being SUCH A BIG GIRL and such a good big sister! I was visiting with some good friends and their kids last week (Avonlie, their eldest daughter was my flower girl), and Av told me she is scared to turn 10 next month because she wants to stay cute and little forever. I told her I love that she is beautiful–and that it starts from her heart–and that her beauty will never change. And I told her it would be sad if she ‘stayed little forever’ because I want to see her TAKE UP SPACE in this world. I want her to not only be ‘the big sister’ who gets to watch out for her little sister and little brother, but the strong, independent young woman who is able to go out into the world with independence and freedom and explore ALLLL the amazing things exactly how she wants to. And that she can not only escape into the books she loves to read, but she can see new things and create her own stories. She got the biggest smile. :)

I hope you’re having such a great day and that your body is feeling good…easy…and healthy! <3

Scotchmallows are the best! I get a box of See’s once a year at the holidays-I usually hope that my brother and mom don’t talk about it and each send us one because we LOVE See’s!

Is that a pan of Salmon?! yum! I am glad you have meals being delivered-it’s one less thing to deal with.

I love that Knox wants you to dress he and Beck the same. That is so cute!

Reply

Hi! I have to laugh because Friday Night Lights and Gilmore Girls were maternity leave watches for me too. I also caught up on Grey’s Anatomy with baby number 2.

With the second baby I did start to read more while breastfeeding once we got the hang of it!

Reply

Oh sweet little Skye, that is a hard transition at first. What a great idea to make her feel important with big sister tasks. I hope Beck will follow in his Mom’s and sisters’ love for sleep soon. And I love the See’s peanut crunch, I’m pretty sure it’s genetic since those were my Mom’s favorite!

That ironman clip is incredible!! Don’t mind me while I’m over here sobbing!!

I just wanted to say I miss reading your blogs everyday. Please, please, please don’t feel pressure though! I know the craziness of a newborn and you 100% deserve this time to soak him in, heal yourself, and bond as a family. Just wanted you to know you are missed :)

That means a whole lot to me Amanda! I’ll probably do another 3 weeks of 3 posts a week and then try to get back to normal! Have the best evening and thanks for taking the time to tell me this.

Hi Janae:

Just finished a cross country move driving. It’s been ALOT to say the least. I just read this and HEART MELTED TO A PUDDLE. Could not be happier for all of you. These pictures are EVERYTHING!!!!

Reply

DONNA! Thank you so so much… that means the world to me. And WOW, cross country move?! That is so exciting and exhausting. I hope you are doing well!

Reply

Ooo, I love See’s but have you tried Enstrom’s? I live out in Western Colorado and holy wow, their dark chocolate almond toffee is out of this world good!

And 100% agree that the hardest runs are the ones you remember most. A couple of years ago I ran I think a 5- or 7-miler during a severe thunderstorm, making several loops around our neighborhood + a big park with a paved trail, of which half was lined with big trees and the other half was bare to the sky. It was pouring and I remember hearing lightning hit the ground about 50 yards behind me, yikes! But amazingly, I wasn’t alone — our neighbor was out walking his Sheltie in the park! I was happy to see that I wasn’t the only one jumping around in the rain. It was so exhilarating.

The only downside was that, because of the severity of the weather, when I got home we had no power. Ugh. I was SO looking forward to a bowl of power oatmeal and kicking back to watch a Golden Girls marathon. Instead I took a hot shower in the dark. :-D

Anyway, belated congrats on the baby!! I’ve been a reader for a year or so but first time commenter, I think? Your family looks beautiful!

I’m re-watching Gilmore Girls right now too :)

Except I randomly started it at the 6th season. haha

I wouldn’t say my babies had their days and nights confused, I considered it more like an endless cycle that didn’t really show any respect to the clock. They maybe slept a bit better during the day since they loved to be held but the whole 24 hour period was short sleeps, crying, nursing and pooping, repeat repeat repeat. I always just stayed in bed and nursed side lying and either dozed or read on my kindle. Using my phone just woke me up more so then I struggled to sleep once the baby was sleeping, going downstairs to watch tv was out of the question lol I was too tired to even sit up. Focusing on maximizing my own sleep vs trying to improve the babies (useless) was what worked best for me.
