Threatened vs. I’ll Join You.

My plan for yesterday’s run was to get up and run super early but when my sister texted me the night before that Skye could be at her house (with my niece) while we ran later in the morning, my plans changed REAL quick.

5.5 miles @ 9:12 average pace and the prettiest colors.

Skye was also more than happy with the arrangement so she could party with her cool cousin while we were gone.

Later on in the day we decided that some more time outside was necessary.

IMG 1345

Brooke and Beretta couldn’t resist getting in some running while we were there.

IMG 1351

And Skye tried to bring home every rock that she saw.

IMG 1348

Our next stop was to meet up with a good friend of mine.  Her little girl used to come home with us after preschool back in the day so they were really close and beyond happy to be reunited.

The highlight of my food yesterday were these Pillsbury Orange Rolls.  They were another need, not a want.

Here’s to hoping that the new baby picks up my sleeping DNA that Brooke and Skye have inherited from me.  They ASK to go to bed at night ha.  PS their tie-dye pjs are my favorite.

PPS Skye had the hiccups at the same time the baby was having hiccups and they were pretty much synchronized.

I look up to Stephanie Bruce for a million reasons but her IG post the other day reminded me of one of my favorite reasons:.

IMG 1302

Molly and Sarah both had incredible races in London and they both walked away with new personal bests.  Those two women are Stephanie’s competition.  Stephanie could have looked at their performances in London as a threat to her that they are just getting faster and faster while she did not have a personal best in the marathon this year.  She could have felt bad about herself for seeing them perform so well when she didn’t race this last weekend.  She could have not posted about their successes but she was genuinely happy for them to overcome so much to get where they are today.  From what I see/read, Stephanie didn’t see what Molly and Sarah did as a threat to her in the slightest.  She saw it as… I’M GOING TO COME TOO!  She wants to work hard and join them in these successes and that is really awesome.

It’s easy to feel threatened when we see (especially on social media I think) others succeed when we haven’t hit a pr or a goal in a long time.  It’s easy to feel defeated that others are hitting their dreams when we aren’t.  BUT the best thing we can do and put our energy towards is to celebrate their successes and be inspired to JOIN THEM in the successes. <— Success is incredibly contagious when we do it this way!

Just one question today because I really want to hear your answers on this one—>  What is something you are feeling grateful for today?

So happy you are almost to the finish line of your “marathon”, that’s how I have viewed my pregnancies. The reward is so worth it!
I love your last paragraph. It’s so interesting because every runner I know competes against themselves. I have not seen ugly competition. Granted, I’m nowhere near professional runners, and I don’t know any personally. But, at races I always see others stopping to help somebody who falls even though they know it will throw off their PR they worked so hard for, or cheering the people who come in before them. My dear friend ran her first 1/2 marathon last October and came in at the time I have been working so hard for, but didn’t get. I only felt happiness for her. I cried for her because her first race experience was so positive. That is why I LOVE this sport. You are competing against you which allows you to cheer on those who are faster than you.

Today I feel grateful for ibuprofen. Sounds kind of weird but as I was getting ready for the day, I got a headache and know that staring at my computer screen at work won’t make it any better. Also water/electrolytes to help it but I needed a tiny bit of medicine to jump start getting rid of it (which worked!). Have an amazing day, Janae!

I am SO grateful for ibuprofen too and that it worked for you today! Here’s to a wonderful day at work, thanks Maureen.

Oh, I’m so glad for an opportunity to think about what I’m grateful for. I needed that this morning! I’m grateful I have people in my life who love and support me no matter what, and that I have a job that I love as well. Such a good reminder.

LOVE both of those things and I’m sure they are all beyond grateful for you and your love/support. Have a beautiful day, Kristin!

The beautiful fall day! The sun is shining, the leaves are turning, and there is very little wind – a big deal in Iowa!

Getting to see the sunrise on my drive to work. And the ability to be flexible- I’m realizing there is no set timeline you have to follow or keep up with, so move things around to make them work best for you! I’m getting my MBA right now, but struggling with getting the same value online (I went in person because I learn best from other people and in-class discussions!). So I decided to drop one of my electives this next term and wait to take until we can go back in-person.

Reply

I think you made a really great choice Mariah in waiting for that class until you are in-person again. You have to keep me updated with when that happens again! I’m cheering for you big time with your MBA! So glad you got to see the sunrise this morning! Have a beautiful day.

Grateful for my 2.3 mile run this morning- ANY RUNNING IS GOOD RUNNING!!! There’s nothing like an injury (my PF has been flaring up) to make you appreciate running all over again.

TWO POINT THREE MILES–> BOOM! I am SO happy that you got to get in those miles and I really hope your PF stays away for good now. Way to go Jenny!

Janae! I got offered a job yesterday! I’ve been actively looking for 4.5 months with little success and I was getting so discouraged but finally I got something! I woke up feeling so relieved and so grateful. I’m a single mom and had to move back in with my parents bc I couldn’t afford rent so this is SUCH good news.

Ok I want that pizza so badly and now I think pizza is on the agenda for dinner tonight. Enjoy your day :)!

GILLIAN. This. Made. My. Day. CONGRATULATIONS! I am thrilled for you! When do you start? I want to hear all about it. Your kiddos are so proud of you! Enjoy that pizza!!

My husband turned 50 yesterday, and I am so very grateful that I have spent more than half of his birthdays with him! Through all the ups and downs of marriage, kids, life… I am so glad to have such a great support partner to go through life with.
Also, thank you for this post! It’s so nice to actively think of all the reasons we have to be grateful.
Have a really great Wednesday Janae!

I am feeling grateful for beautiful October weather…warm days and cool nights. Shorts for 5:45am runs (sometimes), shorts for little kiddos playing outside for brain breaks and recess, flowers still blooming, trees turning yellow, lawn greening up again (summer brown is fading), elk whistles, trails aren’t muddy/icy but fewer snakes than summer…beautiful October weather right now!!

AMEN to everything you just said. October is just the best!

I am really grateful for my bike today because I am dealing with shin splints AGAIN :( and I have a race in about 2 weeks so I need some form of cross training to keep my fitness up! I’m also grateful I have access to the gym because I will be able to use an elliptical for cross training, too.

Reply

NOOOO about your shin splints. I hope they disappear asap and that you are able to do your race pain free. Thank goodness for biking/elliptical so that you can keep on training. Have a beautiful day Esther and keep me updated!

Hi Janae! I was just thinking about this the other day and I am super grateful that we live in a time where I can keep learning my whole life be it through classes or even just the internet. There’s so much out there for anything I’m interested in, whether it’s running or art or being a better human. I feel super lucky this is the case and even though our time definitely has its problems too if I got to pick I’d still be alive at this time in world history. Happy Wednesday!!

I LOVE what you are grateful for and that is SO so true. Thanks for helping me to remember that. Happy Wednesday to you too.

Feeling grateful for my family and their unconditional support! Last weekend, I was supposed to run the Twin Cities Marathon, but of course it had turned virtual back in June. I was able to go home and run it this weekend with my family running and biking different chunks of it with me. I was really sad about not being able to experience the race’s unique experience, but feel so fortunate to have had the once in a lifetime experience of being able to have my family alongside me for a whole race. That’s what I have enjoyed most about this craziness of the past few months–finding ways to be happy about all these crazy experiences/memories the pandemic is giving us :)

Your comment gave me all of the feels. Thank you for sharing, Carly. I am SO happy you were able to do the race with your family right there with you. You all support each other so much. Let’s keep finding the happy!

Our puppy and my partner. Its been a crazy year and having them to share life with in seasons like this is huge. Also fall is looking amazing where we are. All the foliage and colour is crazy.

My husband has been busy in the fields so we haven’t really seen him much the past two weeks and it has been rough. The kids can get whiney and tired, they fight with each other, they argue with me, and it seems like every night somebody ends up in tears and I have raised my voice way more than I care to… but last night was good! Everyone got along and it was peaceful all the way up to bedtime. This makes me even more happy because I have to go away for the next two nights and I’d hate to leave them with the angsty feeling (I’m sure I feel it more than they do). So, while I’m not grateful to be away from them for the next two nights I am grateful for the peaceful feeling between us right now. And maybe a little part of me is thankful for two nights to myself :)

Reply

Erika, you guys have really had a difficult last few weeks and I am SO happy that you had such a good night last night before you leave. Enjoy those nights on your own and spoil yourself a little extra:)

I’m grateful for cooler temps! it’s only suppose to be in the 80s today, but it’s the nighttime temps that I’m most grateful for – getting down in the 50s.

P.S. We love those orange rolls – I made them on Sunday!

Aren’t they just the best?! I might need more today. COOLER TEMPERATURES… finally!! You guys have had so much heat. Enjoy and have a great day with Les!

Steph is just the best, American women’s running is on fire and I am so excited to watch it all unfold.

Today I feel grateful for so many things but mostly my family all here and healthy. Health really is the most important thing without it not much else matters. I am feeling grateful for little things too, like a run outside this morning and cuddles with our bulldog.
