Always a Little Worried + Tangents!

We had another raccoon sighting in our backyard.  It was nighttime and the raccoon was happily eating out of Beretta’s dog bowl when he was found… So now when I leave for my runs in the morning I’m always a little worried that I might find him again.

7 miles @ 9:19 average pace!

The morning routine being back in action has sure felt nice.

And their excitement for the school day is bigger and better than ever.  I don’t think they will ever complain about going to school again.

I had a doctor’s appointment yesterday!  I also did the glucose test and then they drew blood.  I have to come up with every distraction possible in my head when I get shots or have blood taken because if I think about it while it is happening I want to rip the needle out and/or pass out.

After the appointment we grabbed some lunch!

Skye had quality time at my sister’s house while we were at the doctor.

My love for tomatoes is still going strong so for dinner we made Spaghetti Margherita and it was heavenly.  This meal reminded me of what I love to eat the night before a marathon and brought back good memories of being so excited/nervous about a race the next morning.  I can’t wait to do that again.

I have a few tangents to talk about today!

*My sister really needs to open a pizza shop.  This combo that she made for us had red sauce, mozarella, chicken, garden tomatoes and basil.  It’s hard to eat any other pizza after trying her pizza.  Buy the Sam’s club pre-made pizza dough if you like making pizza at home, it makes it so much easier (I think now you have to call ahead and let them know you are picking it up but maybe that’s just when you are like my sister and buying 20 at a time;).

*We think our chickens are going to be ready soon to start laying eggs so we have been making sure they have comfortable nest boxes.  These chickens have been so good for our kids in teaching them responsibility and I cannot wait to never buy eggs again (and to give our neighbors eggs all of the time).

*I’ve been hanging out in our basement as much as possible lately because it is about 12 degrees cooler down there.

*As I told you last week, Skye has boycotted naps completely.  I need some ideas on what to do for quiet time for her now… help me out!

*We went up to Sundance to take pictures for Brooke’s baptism invitations and she looked like a teenager to me.

*Being at Sundance made us really excited for ski season to start again (I probably won’t be skiing until late December to let my body recover).  While we were there we had Sundance’s blackberry lemonade and watched the kids run around.

*I don’t have a lot of goals in life right now (because I feel like pregnancy takes any extra energy that I have out of me) but my new goal is to use my real camera instead of my phone more often because I love the way the pictures turn out:

Oh thank you so much Tracy! I hope your Tuesday is off to a beautiful start.

We had a whole family of raccoons living under our deck this spring! I know people view them as pests, but they were only eating our birdseed and have since moved on. Plus, the babies are really cute :)
What’s quiet time? lol My girls are older now, but I think when they quit napping, that was just it for us, we didn’t try any form of quiet time. They were both in preschool when naps ended, so that filled their days.
Blood draws definitely bother me – I have vasovagal syncope – so I lie down every draw and now I’m fine. I’m mostly ok with vaccines though, I can sit up like a normal person when I get my flu shot.
The thing I like most about running is how it makes me feel – it makes me happy and keeps me (somewhat) fit. Cause you know, pizza.

A FAMILY OF RACCOONS?! I am so glad that they were behaved in your backyard while they were there. I don’t think any will ever live in our backyard because of Beretta but they sure like to show up when she is inside at night. Oh that makes sense about your girls’ transition from nap time to preschool. I should have lied down yesterday, great idea. I hope you get some pizza soon! Thanks Amanda!

We often have hedgehogs in our garden – they’re very cute. I’d love to see a raccoon!

I think my son stopped napping just before he turned 3, mainly because he just. wouldn’t. go. to. sleep anymore! It has made the nights better though (he’s never been a big fan of sleeping!). He loves books so is always happy for a session reading books with us.

Nope, not fussed by blood or needles – in fact I’ve an appointment to donate blood on Monday. The plus side of no races! I always find it slows me down for a while, but right now that’s not a problem.

Hedgehogs are VERY cute and Brooke would love to have some hedgehogs in our backyard. I’m glad nighttime sleeping is going better now. Teach me how to not be bothered by blood and needles and that’s awesome you are giving blood on Monday! Have a wonderful day friend.

Skye is still a bit young to give up naps completely so I would maybe keep trying even if she protests. However, if you feel she’s really ready to give it up, you can try an “okay to wake” lamp. I have the Hatch and it’s great. Basically, you can set the light to turn green (or whatever color of your choosing) to signal it’s okay to get up and quiet time is over. You talk about it first and practice it. You might even need to start quiet time as little as 2-3 minutes. You can watch her on the monitor and if she’s getting restless, quickly turn the light green via the app on your phone. Then go in and make a big deal about how the light is green and quiet time is now over. You can then stretch those minutes until quiet time reaches 1-1.5 hours. During quiet time, tell her she can choose a gentle activity so her body can rest. Reading is always good, but really anything where she’s primarily sitting or lying down. Hope that makes sense.
Check out Big Little Feelings on Instagram. They have a great highlighted story on quiet time.

Hey Jessica! That is what I was thinking, she seems too young to be done with napping so we will try to keep encouraging them. That lamp sounds perfect, grabbing one on amazon today! Thank you for the help and that absolutely makes sense to me. Just started following them on IG, thank you!Have a great day.

I don’t think I’ll ever complain about going to school again, either–my district is all virtual right now, and I miss being there SO much.

I have friends who have had success with having their kids listen to audiobooks (with headphones, so it’s quiet for you!) and doing something like paint-by-sticker or coloring while they listen. That way they’re occupied and engaged, but still relaxing and giving you some time!

Blood and needles don’t bother me! I’ve gotten pretty used to it, and it doesn’t phase me . . . but obviously you still need to reward yourself after a blood draw. :-). P.S. Your photos look so good!

Reply

Hey Kristin! I hope things change for your district soon (and that things in your area become more and more safe)! Those are fabulous ideas for quiet time! I had never thought of audiobooks, such great ideas. Thank you Kristin and I hope you have a wonderful day friend.

We had 3 coyote sightings in my parents backyard at the beginning of the summer! In the past we would randomly see them, like once every few years, so this was super weird! My dog one day ran to the neighbors house that is diagonal behind my parents and they had food out which is definitely why the coyotes were coming around. So I politely went over and told them to stop because kids are going to get hurt. It wasn’t a lie either since there are young kids behind them. Since then no food and no coyotes.

In lighter animal notes, we had a big puddle of water due to a ton of rain and there were ducks swimming in it!

I’m with you on being bad with blood and needles! At my annual exam last year my doctor drew blood and I accidentally looked before it was done and almost threw up. Kinda makes me nauseous just thinking about it lol.

Brooke – you’r pictures for your Baptism invitations are beautiful! My favorite thing about running is the sense of accomplishment once I finish the run :) Plus running makes me feel productive since it’s something I do first thing in the morning.

Reply

Hey Maureen! THREE coyote sightings in their backyard, that would have freaked me out big time. I am so glad you said something to them and that there haven’t been any more coyotes. I bet those ducks sure looked cute. We are just the same when it comes to blood and I won’t ask anymore questions about it so that you don’t have to think about it. I love why you run. Thanks Maureen and I hope you have a beautiful day!

I love your chicken updates!!!! That raccoon better stay away from them :)

Reply

SERIOUSLY… that raccoon is up to no good! Luckily our coop is ‘raccoon proof’ according to Andrew ha. I NEED PUPPY UPDATES FROM YOU! And kid updates… so many big changes lately for you guys! I hope you have a beautiful day Toby and I miss you so much.

Reply

Raccoons eat chickens! I would make extra sure your coop and run are critter proof!

Reply

Yes!!! Andrew says he has made it completely raccoon proof… we would be heartbroken!!! Hope you have a great day Sasha.

Knox is looking so grown up too, especially in that last photo with Skye!! I always want to use a real camera but the convenience of my phone always wins out!

He really is… crazy he is going to be 8 in a few weeks too! Hahah that is exactly what happens to me with the camera so we will see how this works out. I hope you have a great day DJ!

Brooke is such a brilliant beautiful girl! What an amazing picture:)

This is crazy but my 6yo (Leila) still naps if she can from 1-2pm…but the downside is that she wakes up at 5am everyday no matter what (with or without a nap). She sleeps at 7pm every night.

We live on a small lake about 12 miles from Boston and we have so many animals in our wooded-lake backyard: raccoons, foxes, squirrels, chipmunks, voles, muskrats, geese, ducks, deer, and funny-we also have a random seagull that seems lost (the ocean is the other way!hahaha).

Reply

Thank you so much Nadya, I sure agree with you. AHHHHH I am really hoping this is just a short phase for Skye and she follows Leila’s good example:) That is early… are you up that early too?! Brooke would LOVE to have foxes in our backyard. I love that you guys live in such a gorgeous area and get to see so much of nature. Have a beautiful day Nadya!

Brooke looks like an angel in that picture! One of our hens just started laying (about 19 weeks old)! I’m sure you know this, but watch your chickens around those raccoons—make sure your coop/run is totally predator proof!

Reply

Thank you so much Kristen, I totally agree with you. YAY for eggs, I am so so excited for you! Yes, that’s what freaks me out about the raccoons too but Andrew keeps reassuring me that he made sure the coop is predator proof. Thank you so much and I hope you have a great day…. enjoy those eggs.

We have quite the wildlife parade in our yard/neighborhood. Even though we’re near a highway, we also have a park and stream just down the hill. Bunnies and raccoons have made nests under our shed at times. Deer are constantly trekking back and forth through the yards (eating the plants/flowers). We often spot foxes dashing through. And we have many varieties of birds: hawks, owls, blue heron, cardinals, blue jays, and even hummingbirds :)
I’m fine with the sight of blood and with needles–I always watch injections and blood draws.
For Brooke’s question: I enjoy setting goals and achieving them (like how far to run or how fast), but what I LOVE about running is finding out how my effort shows in my performance–I can take it easier and go farther, or I can give it all of my effort and go fast, and it’s up to me :)

Reply

I love all of the wildlife you get to see where you live. Brooke wants to see a fox so so bad. Maybe we will come visit you:) “Finding out how my effort shows in my performance” –> I love that! Thanks for sharing Corey and enjoy your Tuesday.

My boys all quit napping at different ages: Kid1 was 1 (yes, 1 yr old), Kid2 was 2-1/2, and Kid3 was almost 4…I think stopping naps is really individual for each kid. Kid3 was starting afternoon preschool so we didn’t try to have quiet time, it all just went away with school. For Kid1 and Kid2 I tried really hard for a couple of months to make naps continue but it just didn’t work…so we instituted 1-1/2 hrs of quiet time every afternoon instead. Simple rules – it had to be in their room and it had to be quiet (reading, stuffed animals, Legos, puzzles, etc); and no coming out unless they needed the bathroom or there was an emergency (generally defined as sick tummy, noticeable bump, or any blood). This kind of quiet time worked so well that I may have kept it for more years than normal (I think through 3rd grade).

Thank you SO much for sharing and your quiet time sounds perfect! I might have to start doing a bit of quiet time for the older kids during this time of school at home a few days a week. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

Here’s a crazy story about animals and running. I used to live in a suburb (of Dublin, Ireland) and we had a LOT of foxes in the area. One night I was out for a run quite late, around 11pm, and ran past a park. I looked over the fence into the park and there was a fox eating something in the middle of the park. He saw me, abandoned what he was doing and started CHASING AFTER ME – he followed me for about a half mile and across several roads!! It was actually super scary!

Reply

CHASING AFTER YOU!?! Just reading your story increased my heart rate, that must have been so scary!

I have a friend who stopped using the word nap. She had her child just lie in bed and think about the day and maybe what she wanted to do later. More often than not, it turned into a nap.

Reply

That is brilliant! I think part of Skye’s problem with naps lately is because she knows that the big kids don’t take naps but she seems tired enough for them… I hope this works for her. Thanks so much for sharing Dona and I hope you have a beautiful day!

We have a groundhog that is trying to burrow under our barn.

My son stopped napping around age 4. For quiet time my husband and I would take turns napping on weekends (we were at work and he was at pre-school during the day), Saturdays one parent would take him outside and Sundays the other for patent naps :)

I don’t like to see the needle in my arm, but I am okay with the process and the blood vials after.

I like how running keeps me in shape!

Skye looks like she’s ready to go to kindergarten in that jean skirt and pigtails and Brooke looks so beautiful and grown up.

We are 5 miles from the LA county line but we might as well be 500 with all the wildlife we see. We had a family of bobcats that liked to hang out in our trees (pre-blogging days!) and raccoons decided to have a pool party another time (https://mcmomentsandmemories.blogspot.com/2018/10/theres-something-vicious-in-our-backyard.html) We’ve also seen deer, coyotes, rabbits, squirrels, and skunks!

My brother was a hemophiliac so blood and needles were a regular part of my growing up years. He had to give himself shots and was quite the pro! I’m less comfortable around them now than I was 40 years ago.

When my children didn’t want to take naps anymore I went grocery shopping with them in the stroller (it’s very near our house) and I would take a longer route home. Then most of the time they would fall asleep in the stroller. When I came home I just let them sleep in the hallway. We had a bluetit family in our garden in the spring and they were very cute. I love running because it makes me go outside into nature. I makes me feel I can do hard things, I love it when some runs feel like no effort at all. My achilles heel is bothering me, so I’m doing the smart thing and taking a break from running, physical therapist next week. I think I’ll go for a windy bike ride instead.
Have a great day!

Are the raccoons interested in the chickens? I get creeped out when I hear about cougars and coyotes in urban areas.

One of my kids was an amazing napper and the other three not so much. If you drove somewhere during the naptime, would Skye fall asleep or is she just done with afternoon tiredness? Quit time is tricky for busy families because it often means a parent also has to commit to quiet time (by reading together or doing a calm activity). Not only that, but how often do we fall asleep instead of the kiddo? (a lot of times) I remember taking turns drawing on each others backs. I’d try to draw long elaborate random things on their backs hoping they’d fall asleep. It rarely worked. Kids have willpower or really strong eyelids. Sometimes a stroller walk or bike ride helped.

Brooke, I love that feeling of generating air going through my hair and over my face when running. I love how my brain starts to think about interesting things when I run. Sometimes I take my hair out of my ponytail and let it fly behind me!

If you want to learn to like your Raccoon here is a great kids book. My kids are the same age as your and they loved it. I love all Sam Campbell books even as an adult but they are hard to find because they are old . https://www.amazon.com/LOONY-COON-Antics-Rollicking-Raccoon/dp/B000X9MCDG/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=loony+coon&qid=1598398722&sr=8-1

Hi Brooke, this is for you: I love lots of things about running, but maybe my favorite thing is the feeling of my body and mind moving in harmony. Does that make sense to you? My work is very desk-bound and all “in my head” (a bit like being at school, I guess) so it’s nice to remind myself I even have a body. There’s a state that psychologists call “flow” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_(psychology) if you want to look it up with your mom and maybe ask her to explain it better :-)), where you’re fully absorbed in and really enjoying what you’re doing and you stop thinking about all the stuff that bothers you the rest of the time. Some people just call it “being in the zone” or “being in the moment”. I get the same thing from surfing or swimming, and even sometimes from work when I’ve got an interesting job to do.
How about you, what do you love best about running?

Hi Janae!
I saw two DEAD raccoons (and had to drag our three pups away from both) on our walks this past week. One was in the road, and the other was right next to the sidewalk. Not pleasant sights. Otherwise, we see plenty of mule deer in our neighborhood! I’d much rather see them than raccoons, haha.
A heads up about the chickens: unless you have them under heat and lights through the winter, they won’t lay. Their laying schedule goes by daylight hours, so when the days are too short for them, they won’t produce eggs (in nature, laying in the winter means their chicks would hatch in winter = low chance of survival for them!). We did have our chickens under lights in SC, and while they will lay almost daily under lights, it shortens the number of years the hens will lay (about 5 down to about 3). So, up to your family! :) It was absolutely wonderful to eat those delicious eggs daily though – they taste so much richer than store-bought.

Reply

Hi Janae! In reference to your nap dilemma, my kiddos always had a “quiet time” even when they no longer napped. It was in their rooms and they listened to audio books, put together puzzles, looked at books etc.. I would rotate the quiet time toys often. My kiddos learned to love this time and continued on their own in later years. Hope this helps!
