Running Temptations.

7 miles @ 9:20 pace to start off my week.  My glutes were definitely sore from our hike the day before which means I need to be using my glutes more.

If Brooke’s awake when I get home from a run she watches out the window for me to finish and runs out to meet me.  She luckily doesn’t mind my sweaty hugs afterwards.

My sister and I kept coming upon running temptations while we were out on our run.  Electric scooters were out on the sidewalks more than usual and they were calling our names to use to get home rather than running.  I’m sure if we would have found two right next to each other, we probably would have grabbed them since I had the app to use them on my phone already ha.

Other running temptations I’ve experienced over the years:  To run farther or faster than what my coach assigned me to do, to not eat after a really hard effort because my stomach feels off, eating something the night before a big run or race that I know will make my stomach upset the next morning, to just wait another mile or two to start taking in gels when I know I need to start NOW, jumping into the river I’m running by because I’m so hot and I need to cool off, stopping my speed workout before I am done as I run by a bakery for cinnamon rolls… and the list goes on and on.

Andrew said his biggest running temptation is not going at all;)

This tweet from Des made me laugh but I am MUCH more likely to procrastinate my run in the winter than during the summer because I know that with each minute I wait to go out means it is only getting hotter and hotter.

Skye usually likes to take her time to wake up in the mornings but we had to get going faster than normal yesterday and she wasn’t very happy with me.  The teen years are going to be rough…

Brooke had another sports camp!  My good friend Sarah (the one I went to London with in February) is in Utah this month so we signed our girls up for the same camp.  It felt kind of weird because we used to do tennis camp together every summer when we were younger and now we are dropping our girls off to go to sports camps together.

Skye is a good sport to just go along and watch the bigger kids with their current hobbies.

We all decided that an Einstein bagel with strawberry shmear needs to be part of the post soccer camp agenda.

A few tangents to finish up today’s chat:

*I definitely show you the busy parts of our day but there are many many hours of the day spent like this too.

IMG 7280

*Question from Andrew:  He thinks that this chicken of ours is a rooster.  Any chicken experts out there that can tell the difference?

IMG 7281

*Sure wish we could all meet here this morning for a trail run together:

*Brooke and I are reading this book together and loving it.

IMG 7130

*Skye told us that she needs an eye mask too for her naps… I wear this one every night of my life and I will not be parting with it.

Tell me about any running temptations you’ve had in your running life?

Do you procrastinate your runs at all?  Do you do so more in the summer or winter?

Favorite type of bagel and what do you put on it?

If you and I could meet up for a run today… Where would you take me for our run?!? (Just daydreaming about some fun adventures:)

-PS our answer to the road trip question from yesterday is Yellowstone… we are planning on doing that next month and camping/airbnb!

Bagel: everything bagel with Kite Hill (non dairy) chive cream cheese, sliced tomato, and sliced avocado!!!

Well, now I need you to mail me this bagel combo right this second. I hope you are having a great Tuesday Nadya!

From my farmer dad he says that’s a Hen. :)

AWESOME!! Thanks Samantha for asking him, I really appreciate it and we are very relieved ha. Have a great day!

Heh we have bikeshare stations all over the city here and I’m often VERY tempted to unlock one with my phone. I have an annual membership so it wouldn’t even cost me anything. I’ve only done it *once* (I was half dying 1.5 miles from home and was DONE with running). Also I’m often tempted to hop into a restaurant for food or stop for ice cream or a popsicle. There’s a pizza place 0.5 miles from home and I often really consider stopping for pizza and running home holding the box haha.

If we were running together here in DC I’d take you down in Rock Creek Park where the road is closed and we have lots of space to run around a creek and trees and lots of other quiet things, and then we’d go to the national mall to run around the monuments. Pack your ice, though.

Reply

Hahaha they are just so tempting and I can’t imagine avoiding the temptation if you already have a membership. Will you please one day pick up the pizza and run home with it (and send me a picture)!? We are going to make this DC run happen… I cannot wait.

I swore that one of my ladies was a rooster up until the day they started laying eggs. ? Good news is that they should start laying eggs before a rooster would start crowing. At least that’s what I found in my research.

Reply

I had no idea that they started laying eggs before a rooster would start crowing… Good to know! I cannot wait to start getting eggs. Hope you have a great day Christine!

Reply

When do they start school where you live? I wondered because we are in school in 2 weeks and you mentioned camping next month so you must not be back to school. And your pregnant self is ok with camping??

Reply

Our school will start right after our trip! And about the camping… the kids REALLY want to so I’m going to do my best to try ha but we will also be rending Airbnbs too:). I hope your day is a great one so far Mary!

Reply

Ohhh you are making me want a bagel so bad! Maybe I will have to add that to the agenda today! I love a rosemary olive oil bagel with cream cheese and an egg for lunch. So good.

I think I’m like you–I’m less likely to procrastinate in the summer, because I know it will just make the heat worse! In the winter, if I wait a bit, it might be warmer. :-) I’m always so tempted to just start walking during a run sometimes . . .

Reply

I hope that the bagel makes it on your list of things to do today. And that bagel combo sounds like heaven. Oh we all have that temptation too!! Hope your Tuesday is a great one. Thanks Kristin!

Reply

I don’t procrastinate runs in the summer because heat/humidity haha. But in the winter I will- I’ll tell myself another hour can be another few degrees warmer!

Everything bagel with bacon, egg and cheese. Or there’s a local place here (Maryland!) that has Asiago Old Bay bagels in the summer, so good.

Reply

If we had humidity too then that would motivate me even more to get out and start my run asap! I hope you get some of those Asiago Old Bay bagels asap and send me one while you are there;). Have a great rest of your day Mariah.

If you’re visiting Yellowstone by way of Jackson Hole, check out the Teton Science School tours (https://www.tetonscience.org/what-we-do/wildlife-tours/)

My husband and I honeymooned in Jackson Hole last winter and this was the best part! Super educational and mission-oriented. They give you breakfast, snacks, and a great packed lunch, too. I cannot recommend enough!

Reply

I bet your honeymoon was absolutely amazing. We are definitely going to do this (I just sent the link to Andrew wahoo) and the kids will love it. Their scenic float tour looks amazing too. Hope you are having a great day.

Reply

I say hen! We have a 3 month old Easter Egger that looks just like that.

Reply

THANKS for the help! I hope you are having a great day so far Kristen.

Hi Janae! I love Charlotte’s Web! What a great book to read together especially because Brooke loves animals. I agree that winter is the best time to procrastinate runs. Favorite type of bagel is everything bagel and biggest running temptation is to keep “warming up” for a speed workout and not start it.

Reply

Hey Amy! I hope that you get an everything bagel asap. Hahaha I have definitely had that running temptation happen to me too. Hope your day has been great so far.

Reply

That’s a hen. If it was a rooster it’s tail would be more cone shaped.

Good to know! Thanks for the help Stephanie and enjoy your day.

*Running temptations – usually stopping to take pictures of random stuff like pretty flowers.
*Procrastination – whenever I need to do a morning run, YES. Or bad weather. My evening runs are way easier for me to get out and go run.
Bagel – I love bagels with peanut butter. Crunchy! PB-bagels are my favorite winter-time ski fuel. They go in pockets well and do not squish easily. I add dried cherries/cranberries if I have them too.
*We live near a pretty big park that has some fun unpaved trails I have always wanted to explore, but haven’t done quite yet. That’s my dream running-local adventure! And then we can go get ice cream because that’s our plan for this evening. :)
*Yellowstone camping/airbnb sounds amazing!

Reply

Oh I am with you on that… I’m tempted to stop and take pictures a bunch too. YES, bad weather makes me procrastinate a lot too. This next ski season I will be backing your PB-bagel idea with the dried cherries… YUM. Well, I will be coming for our park run followed by ice cream. That sounds perfect… enjoy that tonight. Thanks Katie!

One sprint triathlon we decided to spontaneously do with friends had an out and back run. I considered just turning around on it. I have learned if I do not train for something my investment and commitment definitely declines, because I would not even consider doing this for something I trained for.

Yellowstone. Yeah. I am hard pressed to find a place out west that is not worth the road trip.

Reply

COME MEET US AT YELLOWSTONE!! That would be so much fun. And I probably would have turned around on that spontaneous sprint tri ha. Hope your day is off to a really great start.

Running temptations would be not racing. Racing hurts and deep down I’m a big baby! Ha!
I don’t procrastinate my runs only because I don’t have time to! I HAVE to run before work or it won’t get done. Sometimes I feel fortunate of that because I’m afraid I would find too many excuses to not go.
Favorite bagel ever was from The Bagel Deli where they made their own bagels and all of their food was either made there or elsewhere locally. The turkey with lettuce and homemade mayo on a plain bagel was AMAZE!
I would take you to Kendall Katwalk, Mount Rainier or Mount Ellinor in the Olympics. Or Snow lake. Or Melakwa lake. Basically we’d do all of my favorite trails!
Have the best day!

Reply

“Racing hurts” ummmm YES!! You are not a big baby, it really does hurt ha. Having to get right to work definitely makes you avoid procrastination. I feel a bit more like that when the kids are in school and I have to be back at an exact time. Well, now I need to go to that Bagel Deli right now. Can’t wait for our trail runs… those places sound amazing. Thanks Jenny, you too!

Reply

I love me a bagel BELT. Bacon,egg,lettuce,tomato :)!
I procrastinate pretty much all of my runs lol. I definitely prefer winter running over summer (I can’t stand the heat and the amount of bugs I swallow lol)!

Reply

Are you somewhere humid where there are a ton of bugs out in the morning? When we were in Kentucky two summers ago I remember DYING from how many bugs I would get in my eyes and stuck in my lip gloss ha. You are amazing for running through these summers. And now I need a BELT (how have I never heard of that before… it’s perfect). Have a great rest of your day Gillian.

BC has so many amazing trails that I wouldn’t know where to start. Some of my favourites are Hanes Valley, St Markd Summit and the Howe Sound Cresr Trail. For road running our Seawall is stunning. I would probably make a list and let yiu decide lol.

Biggest temptation post run coffee and donuts. So many great shops near ours.

When the weather is terrible I sometimes skip my runs lol. Mostly though I do them as planned. Yesterday I took the dog out and then ran at 5:30am. I ended up running almost 11 miles and then meeting a gf for coffee. Sometimes these morning runs are they only time of the day that I have completely to myself. I call them stolen moments.

Yellowstone sounds amazing! It’s on my Bucket list. Have a great day Janae!

Reply

When we come to BC we really have to make these trail runs happen… I bet they are UNREAL! I think that temptation needs to be a reality often:) Way to go on those 11 miles and I’m so glad you got to meet up afterwards with your friend. Thanks Kristine, you too!

Mmmmm…. An everything bagel with avocado!! That is definitely my favorite and go-to whenever we get bagels! Oh, and our bagel place sprinkles a lemon pepper seasoning on top of the avocado, so good.
If we were to meet up here for a run, then it would definitely be at the beach! My favorite route is to start at the pier in Huntington Beach, and run north up to Bolsa Chica. Definitely my happy place ?
I don’t have a ton of running temptations… Probably taking pictures of random things I see along the way that, for whatever reason, make me notice them. And I have been procrastinating my runs often lately. Not sure why, but I need to stop because it is so hot by the time I get out the door!
Have a great Tuesday!

Reply

I must have that bagel with the lemon pepper seasoning on top of the avocado… that sounds heavenly. Let’s grab those after our beach run! I’m with you on the temptation to stop and take pictures of everything ha. Thanks Wendy, you too!

Hen.

Roosters typically start to crow around 4 or 5 months, I can’t remember when you got your chickens?

Reply

Awesome! Thanks Tracy for the help. We got ours at the end of March. I’m really excited for eggs. Hope you are having a great day!

Reply

There are some really fun and inexpensive animal eye masks on Amazon – I bought them for my nieces and nephews and they love them!

Reply

I need to get those for my kids!! Thanks TAS and I hope your day is a beautiful one.

I loved Charlotte’s Web when I was a girl and my mom read it to me too! It actually made me a vegetarian and I still am!

Reply

Okay, that makes me so happy… what fun memories together. I wonder if Brooke will be choosing to be a vegetarian too and I will 1000% support her in that. So cool, thanks for sharing Kelley and enjoy your day.

Not a rooster – definitely a hen.

The temptation to run when I’m hurt can be a hard one to fight off.

Maybe you’ve already done a post including your favorite running shorts but I’m looking to get some new ones and don’t want to spend a lot on them – suggestions?

Reply

Awesome, thanks for the help. Oh that is a big temptation for me too when I’m hurt. YAY for new running shorts! Here is my current favorites:

Have a great day!

Reply

I have to confess… I clicked over and read through all the comments because I was so worried about your rooster/hen situation. I know nothing about chickens, I don’t even have chickens, I just got worried about it. I’m glad to see the consensus is hen :) Hope you have a great day!

Reply

Thank you for caring! We were so so worried too because roosters aren’t allowed here so we were looking up farms that we could take it to just in case! Hope your day is a great one!

Reply

I was SO tempted to jump in the river during/after my 18 miler this weekend!!! But I finished too far from it and was too tired to walk back ha!

Reply

Hahaha next time you have to plan your run so that you can jump in afterwards! Great job on 18 miles! Hope you are having a great day so far.

Reply

You are going to have the best time in Yellowstone! We just got back last weekend and it was magical!

My youngest is in tennis camp this week ( masks require, social distancing, hand washing stations etc). Both girls have been in “ swim camp” all summer. It’s our swim team without meets and less kids. We had a reality check this week when we were told a coach has COVID. The situation has not been handled the right way and it’s shaken me up. I realized this is what in person school is going to be like with frequent scares, hopefully a little more coordinated though! I don’t really fear for my girls ( especially since it’s outside and they were in the water and the coaches are not). It’s the adults and thats also my fear for school! But this scare is NOT pleasant!!

Running temptations: once I had a hard 22 miler on the schedule with speed in it. At mile one there was a pristine box of donuts lying in the bike path. Seriously. I amazed myself by continuing on.

Also, Twin Cities marathon finishes with four miles straight up without a pause before the final one mile steep descent. It’s not a steep hill, but after 21 previous miles it’s a bummer. There was a house 2.5 miles into the hill with a “free beer for quitters” sign. So tempting.

And yes, Des’ tweet called me out. I have procrastinated on basically every run since we started working from home. After all, if my lunch break is movable and there is a shower, why not?

Reply

I was totally pulled in to the hen/ rooster query. So I read through. Then went back up to the pic to see the tail again.

Have to say, it’s a very good picture! Definite photography skills here. I’m sure she wasn’t still during the attempt. She’s looking right at you and you have back to feet (?) and head to tail. She’s all there in the frame and the lighting is good. This could go up in Brooke’s room even though it’s not the ginger. This assumes they’re not all already in Brooke’s room!

Your blog is a nice respite today!!

Reply

That’s a hen! She’s getting a pink comb because she’s going to be laying soon! My Easter Eggers (what she is) laid their first eggs at about 17-18 weeks old, so you’ll probably get your first bluish or green egg soon!

Yellowstone is a wonderful place! As a resident of a “gateway” town to a different national park, please consider the impact your travel could make on surrounding communities. Tourism is an important part of all of our economies so spending money is great! Please also consider supply chains that rural communities must contend with — for example, our local grocery store gets wiped out during summers and with COVID, pickins have been even slimmer! Maybe grocery shop before your trip, then plan to buy a few souvenirs and ice cream cones so the local businesses can be supported (and the communities can get sales tax revenue!). Also, make sure to research local ordinances as they will vary by state/county. Masks are required where we live and it’s SO helpful when travelers have done their homework and are prepared to comply!

Reply

I can’t thank you enough for sharing this with me. We have been talking about this a lot… how can we help the tourism economy but be safe and make sure we are doing the best things for these areas. We will definitely do these things, thank you so much and hope you are having a beautiful day in the mountains.
