Took for Granted + Tangents!

Ninety-five degrees last week and winter this week.   I was grateful for my hood to use as it started HAILING on the walk up my last hill.

It really is amazing to me when I realize how much the heat affects our running… My last flat mile of my run yesterday was a 7:52 yesterday (43 degrees) and it felt really comfortable but add in any heat and there is no way my body is running that fast.  If you have noticed your paces slow as the heat increases, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.  Heat can really slow us down but luckily with some time your body can adjust to it better!

Podium Runner shared just how much on average runners slowed down with each degree warmer than 59 F.  I would SO much rather run a race in the cold than in the heat.

My run was done with my sister.  She had hurt her toe last week (on the stairs too… we are angry at stairs lately) so she took a few days off and is back in action now.

We both had to dig into our winter gear to find gloves to wear.

Skye was just so thrilled about the change in weather because she could wear her rain boots to splash around.

IMG 4599

Our libraries are open and it felt so good to take the girls there and be able to read for a while and bring some books home.  This year has made me so incredibly thankful for all of the things I used to take for granted because now I know what it’s like when they are gone.

IMG 4604

We didn’t really see anyone else at the library but Skye made sure to walk around saying, “shhhhhhhhhhh.”

And because the library is right next to our favorite bakery…

And that’s pretty much all of the pictures I took yesterday so let’s move on to some tangents….

Tangent time!

*My sister is one step closer to finishing off her kitchen.  She has changed every single inch of the space including knocking a wall down.  She recently installed the tile and it looks amazing.  She’ll do a before and after post and you are going to be shocked over how much she has done with a small budget for the kitchen!

IMG 4585

*We were laughing at the park on Sunday when we realized we are going to have four kids soon and we’ve only known each other for 4.2 years as of now.

IMG 4559

*Andrea lives in Canada and she and I did a candy trade.  I LOVE seeing and trying candy from different places in the world.  The Swedish Berries are too good.

IMG 4587

*I was trying to make some Superhero Muffins in a hurry the other day and when I took them out I realized I had forgotten to add the oatmeal and that the melted butter for the recipe was still in the microwave. I don’t know where my brain was but somehow they were still very good and they are the best way to get my kids to gobble up some zucchini and carrots (Brooke HATES carrots but loves these muffins).  Oh and the original recipe is really good with some almond butter smeared all over it.

IMG 4584

*This article is something I loved and really inspired me to do better and be better.

Tell me the last cooking/baking mistake that you made?  I need to hear these!

How are you adjusting to the warmer temperatures and your running?  Does warmer weather effect you a lot or a little?

Food, dessert or candy from another country that you wish could be easy to get where you live now?

What is something that you used to take for granted but don’t anymore because of how much has changed this year?

Does your sister still go to burn?? Trying to balance that and running has been tough for me!

I don’t know what the candy is called but I had it in England. They are lollipops that are 2 different colors and they taste like smarties!! Yum!

Reply

Jenn! That really is a hard thing to balance out! I think she is doing one of their online classes a week but and then using other workout videos too throughout the week. I’ll ask her today on her run and get back to you. Okay, I think we have those lollipops here too and my kids love them. Have a beautiful day.

One thing I took for granted is just letting my parents live, and now I feel like I am judging their choices of activity and exposure.

Reply

Oh that is interesting and I haven’t thought about that one either. I hope they are doing well, I need a text chat update! Hope you are having a great morning, Erica!

Living in FL I think I tolerate some heat a little better than most. As long as it isnt above 78 I am happy, but the humidity gets me. I went for a run at 7 am and it was already 78 with 94% humidity… i came back drenched! I have to figure out how to keep my legs from cramping when i sweat that much!

Reply

Erica- I can relate completely to this sentiment. My parents are both higher risk and I feel like I am judging them each time they do something that seems risky to me. This tendency is increased by the fact that I live in a state that was hit hard by the virus, shut down quickly and almost completely, and is early in the reopening process and my parents live in a state that was slow to shut down and fast to reopen. I know for me it is a very fine line between healthy love and concern and judgment in this area and I struggle with it on a regular basis now. I really miss just being happy for them when I heard the fun things they were doing now that they are both retired.

I was making a cake recently and forgot the sugar! Luckily I was very spacey that day and had also forgotten to turn the oven on, so I was able to take out the cake and stir in the sugar. It turned out fine!

There is so much I used to take for granted! My state is still mostly locked down, and I really miss simple things like hugging my friends and going to the swimming pool. (And as a pregnant runner, I REALLY miss public restrooms!!!!) It’s also made me very appreciative of what we still have: the trails are open, the farmer’s market is open, and we’ve been spending time outdoors with friends.

Reply

SO glad that the oven wasn’t on yet so you could fix it (and I’m glad I’m not alone in forgetting things). Oh that is really hard… as soon as ours opened I was so happy. I’m glad for the things that you guys do have and I hope that your area opens up more and more and that people are healthier and healtheir. Keep enjoying that outdoors time and keep me updated on your pregnancy.

Love your posts, it’s my “back to work after lunch treat”!
Keep doing what you do, you bring a little spark of joy to lots of people’s lives :)

I am not religious but I do love when faith helps bring people together.

One thing I won’t take for granted again is hugging people! I can’t wait to hug my dad and my sister, and my friends of course.
Also I miss my work colleagues, even the weird ones haha :)

I am so lucky that I get to be a part of your work day, thank you Sarah! My friend (Sarah) that lives in Switzerland said that things are doing so much better for everyone in her area… are they for you? Oh the HUGS. I had no idea how hard those were to live without. It really is amazing to see people come together and I hope you have a really great day!

Reply

Ha I can relate Sarah! It’s my “morning tea” treat, 11am is time for coffee and catching up on HRG and I love my little break! (Reading from Australia).

Reply

This just made me so happy! Thank you for letting me in on your morning tea! Hope you have a beautiful day and keep in touch, Eveline!

I hope that cooler weather is moving this way! It was 93 degrees and 20 mph winds here yesterday…I took a rest day;-). Warmer weather affects me a lot. I do not do well in the heat. I wouldn’t say I adjust at all though out the summer either. I try to get out as early as possible to beat the heat. I prefer 50 degrees and below! It’s funny though because most of my runner friends love the hot weather and run after work in the 80-90 degree weather! Does Andrew like running in hot weather? I suppose he runs by the light of the moon so the sun doesn’t bother him;-)

I am always forgetting to put in the baking powder or soda. I have made chocolate chip cookies and forgot the chocolate chips.

Getting together with family! It feels odd being cautious about going to visit friends and family–you never know how close you can get!

Happy Tuesday Janae!

Reply

I would have definitely taken a rest day with those conditions too! They love running in the hot weather?!? Andrew does not like running in the heat but he is better at doing it than I am if he has to. Hahaha light of the moon is definitely his favorite. My sister would have loved your version of the chocolate chip cookies. It really is such a guessing game with everything right now. Thanks Becky and tell your kiddos hi for us!

Reply

Scariest typo ever- your sister about to finish off her “kitten”? ;)

Reply

Bahaha thank you for catching that one.. haha luckily they don’t have a kitten;). Have a great day!

Reply

It just caught my eye since I’m a cat person! Can’t wait for her post!

Warmer weather affects my running A LOT! I take it slower and drink way more water.

I used to always get Kinder candy when traveling, but now they are more popular in the US! I also like getting Cadbury chocolate when I’m in Europe- I only see Cadbury here around Easter time, but the chocolate is so good! We need it year-round haha.

Reply

I AGREE… let’s get Cadbury to be a year-round treat here. I’m with you on those warmer runs but today it is 39 degrees so I’m guessing I won’t need much water ha. Have a wonderful day Mariah!

Reply

I run SO much slower in the heat–it is a relief to see how normal that is! I think it’s really good for building stamina and endurance, but I have to adjust a lot in the summer.

Almond butter on superhero muffins is one of my favorite things! Last fall I tried making some pumpkin muffins, and I thought I could sub almond flour for regular (it was all I had)–nope. I opened my oven, and instead of rising, the batter somehow spread ALL over and was dripping down all over the oven. Such a mess, and I didn’t get my muffins!

Reply

Oh you are NOT alone Kristin, you are normal! OH NO… I bet that took forever to clean up too. Good to know that you can’t sub them out. Have a beautiful day, Kristin!

Reply

I was using baking SODA instead of baking POWDER in recipes for about 1 month and a half before I realized why my normally good baking skills were tasting ‘off’. Everything tasted bitter/not quite right. I had been using a small Trader Joe’s cylinder/canister of baking soda – in my mind a little cylinder is supposed to be baking powder. Oops!
I think we are definitely one step ahead of you in weather.. yesterday we had 95+ and starting tomorrow I think we get some of the 50-60-degrees. My 90 degree run at 9pm was definitely slower than normal last night!
Your sister’s kitchen is looking great from that snapshot!
I will never take church/community activities for granted again. As much as I looove being at home, I am feeling a bit anti-social these days!

Reply

OH NOOOOOO! I’m glad you figured it out. I can totally see myself doing that too. You are amazing for running in that and I hope you get to soak in those 50-60 degree days! Yes yes yes… we all are going to be much more excited about every opportunity that comes up. Have a beautiful day Katie.

Reply

100% agree with the weather affecting pace. I think my threshold is like 40° though. After that I get slower and slower! ? Yesterday I kept saying, I’ve got to slow down, but I feel great!

Reply

Hahaha YES, I think that I slow down with each 1.8 degree increase after 40 too:). MISS YOU!

Reply

I’m living in Colorado for a month (rented an Airbnb out here!) and tried to bake cookies last night until I realized the oven was broken. Turns out you can put cookie dough in the microwave and it basically turns into a cookie cake! Problem solved!

Things I don’t take for granted anymore – Being able to swim laps and go to yoga. I’ve been running almost every single day for the last 3 months and my body feels like the tin man. I miss cross training!!

Reply

AHHH I didn’t know you were in Colorado now. I hope you are really enjoying your time there and so good to know about the cookie cake. I bet you are missing those cross-training tools… I can’t wait for it to all be back to normal for everyone. Enjoy your day, Arthi!

I feel like I took EVERYTHING for granted before this pandemic. This experience has sure opened my eyes to how good I have it. I am going to do my best to not take things for granted anymore.

Reply

YES, it has sure made us all a lot more grateful for even the simplest of things. I hope you are doing well Kimberly and that you have a beautiful day.

I made banana bread yesterday but I put it a pan that was way too small and it exploded all over my oven. I lost a lot of the Nutella topping. It was tragic.
I live in Canada now, but when I lived in Utah I missed Smarties and Caramilk bars so much! It’s a very unpopular opinion but I think Smarties are better than M&Ms (especially mixed into ice cream). If you’re interested in another candy exchange let me know because it’s difficult to find Milky Ways here and I need (a frozen) one in my life. Potentially another unpopular opinion – chocolate bars are so much better ice cold!
Things I will never take for granted again – hugs and handshakes! I miss those simple little acts of human connection.
Hope you have a good day!

Reply

I am ALWAYS up for candy exchanges and I love Smarties too! I fully agree with you, I think all candy is better cold or even frozen. I should ask everyone their opinion on that. BOOO to losing the Nutella topping!
I wonder when hugs and handshakes will be normal again. Thanks Rachel, you too!

Can I borrow your sister for a week? I need to add backsplash to my kitchen and hers looks amazing (then again, all of her work is incredible).

Last December I took a trip to Japan, and they had the most amazing mochi treats. You could get them fresh pretty much everywhere for super cheap and it was amazing!! I can’t find any here that taste as fresh and amazing, so I definitely miss that. Which leads to another one of your questions- travel is definitely something I took for granted that might not be possible (at least in the same way) for a while. We had trips to 6 different countries planned this year and they all got scrapped.

Reply

I’ll send her right over:). You’ll have to show me your before and after pics, please. Okay, those mochi treats sound so so good. Now I need those. 6 different countries this year that got canceled? Gretch, I am so so sorry. I hope that you are able to go to them next year!

I just love Skye’s facial expressions!
My last baking blunder was over the weekend when I made peach cobbler. I was supposed to cover the (uncooked) cake mix with the peach juice so the mix bakes and turns into a crust but I didn’t have enough juice and didn’t find out until the cobbler was done baking. We had a combo of delicious brown crust mixed with cake powder. We (eh, my husband) improvised the next day by creating a glaze topping to get the rest of the cake mix to bake.
I don’t adjust well to warm temps; running at 4:30am allows my runs to stay within a good cool range of high 40’s-low 50’s and that’s perfect! Any warmer and I need to hydrate a ton and take my time. When run in the afternoons on the weekends, I feel so out of shape because it’s such a struggle to try to maintain pace!
I took for granted being able to go anywhere at anytime! And being able to pick up anything I needed from any store at any time. And true prime shipping from Amazon!
Have a great day!!

Reply

Oh NO to that mistake but I’m glad you guys could find a solution! Reaching the words peach cobbler made me drool a little bit. 4:30 a.m…. I will never complain again about being tired when I wake up. You are incredible. You are not alone in that afternoon strugglefest when running, it always shocks me how much different I feel and run. Oh yes, the 2 day prime shipping… it was such a luxury! Thanks Jenny, you too.

Reply

Oooo… Can’t wait to see your sister’s kitchen!
Oh man, running in the heat is hard! I try to get out as early as possible when the heat gets bad. My 1st 2marathons (5/6years ago in LA), we had record setting heat, and it was Feb/March when the weather is normally perfect. So anytime after that if the weather on race day is cooler than 75°, I’m good.
I think I took a lot for granted before the pandemic. Hugging family and friends and just being with them. Things are starting to get better here, and I will definitely be spending lots of time together!
Hope your Tuesday is a good one ?

Reply

HOW IS YOUR ACHILLES?! How in the world did you run marathons in those conditions (I remember reading about how hot those years were). I am so glad that things are improving there and I hope you are getting more and more hugs. Thanks Wendy, you too!

Reply

I’ve done the same thing with the Superhero muffins and found the melted butter (or I think I was using coconut oil instead) in the microwave after. And they totally came out fine. Yahoo for your library! That is something I definitely took for granted! Skye is too cute these days, love her shhh, it’s so funny the things they remember. I’m a disaster running in anything over 55 degrees, and much prefer cooler temps. But one race I did started out at 14 degrees and was maybe 28 by the finish and over those 13 miles my legs just never warmed up. My happy place is 30-50 degrees.

Reply

Now I need to try coconut oil in my muffins! 14 degrees ahhhh I can’t even imagine racing in that but it probably felt better than if you were in a race above 55 degrees?! Your happy place is my happy place:). Have a wonderful day Michelle!

Hi Janae! I am such a baby when it comes to running- there’s a small band of temperature where I am comfortable I’ll work my entire schedule around trying to run then. The first few runs in summer heat always make me feel like I’m dying.
I’m so happy that your library is open! I sure miss going there. Ours has done a great job of adding more ebooks and audiobooks and movies but I miss just going to browse.
Happy Tuesday!

Reply

I don’t think you are a baby… the temperatures make a big difference in how much we enjoy running:). I think you are smart to run at the right time each time. That is great that your library has added more ebooks and audiobooks… I hope it opens up soon for you. Thanks Amy, you too!

Hi Janae! I am 23 weeks pregnant now and have been making SO many cooking mistakes! I am a total space cadet in the kitchen lately haha. I mostly just heat a pan up and forget about it until it starts smoking. Luckily its grilling season so I am putting my husband to work there and I am just in charge of veggies and sides. When are you due? You had Skye just a few days before I had my baby boy! We are on similar schedules. :)

I grew up just across the border from Canada and my #1 fave candy bar is Mr. Big!!!!!!!!!!!! You need to try if you get the chance!!

Hope you’re having a good day!

The different facial expressions from Brooke and Skye with donuts makes me wonder who said what just before the click. Also, I really like this video from an Oprah show in 1992 Chicago, shortly after Rodney King in Los Angeles.

Reply

omg thank you for addressing running and the heat! I’m in AZ and it’s slowly killing me haha. but really, I feel so slow so thanks for the reminder it is NORMAL to slow down. can’t wait to see your sister’s remodel. she is so good at that stuff!!

Reply

Wow you and Andrew have known each other for four years? That went by fast! It really doesn’t seem like it’s been that long yet in other ways it’s like you’ve been together forever. Hmm it must be so strange to have people you don’t know IRL think about your relationship in such detail but hey.. I “knew” you before Brooke was born! ?

Can’t believe it’s so cold there now wow! Are the kids missing the pool yet? ?

Extreme weather changes don’t bother me too much but I do not like the humidity. When I take the dog for an evening walk and come home drenched in sweat from a simple walk that’s just blah! Sometimes I don’t want to shower five times a day ?

If we only knew 2020 would so much more than the start of a new decade…

It’s more like a whole new world. I miss the little things like spending time with friends, walking up to my favorite local stores and browsing, I could go on and on. I am soaking up as much extra family time as possible and finding new ways to spend time together as a family. Not to mention all the new recipes we’ve tried!

Have a great Tuesday! Can you believe it’s already June?

PS .. waffle lover desperately seeking waffle iron recommendation! I miss my waffle maker and pancakes are great but it’s not the same ya know! ? ?

Reply

Hi Sydney! Waffle lover over here! ?‍♀️ We have a Cuisinart Belgian waffle maker but it is double-sided which makes it SO much easier if you are making waffles for more than 1 person… or if you just want extra waffles without having to wait as long!

Reply

What a genius idea! ? I’ve never thought to get a double sided waffle maker!

Thanks a bunch for sharing! ???

Heat is THE WORST for me. Usually summer is my decrease running mileage and increased cycling/swimming mileage season because of the heat. Seriously, it’s not for me. I’ve mentioned it before but I did the Ironman in Coeur d’ Alene in its inaugral year and it was a bazillion degrees with a zillion % humidity. I still set a PR by only 15 minutes (was going to be an hour+ but the heat killed my run) but it was horrible horrible. They had to call in emergency assistance from neighboring counties because of all the people dropping out, heat stroke, etc. I pretty much refer to that race whenever I complain about the heat (which is usually the entire summer)

Cooking disasters happen to me when I am in a hurry. I either forget an ingredient or misread the measurement. My daughter a few times has confused tsp and T which can make a difference with things like salt ;)

Let me know if you want a box of treats from germany! I think candy from Japan is so cute. Italy has some of the best cookies and France the best pastries (literally melt in your mouth)

Skye’s face with the donuts. HILARIOUS.

My mom put almond extract instead of vanilla extract in her chocolate chip cookies the other day. Not sure how that happened lol but they tasted good still! I’m glad they were still edible! I made some muffins last night with shredded carrot and coconut flakes and walnuts (skipped the raisins that they called for) and they turned out fantastic!

Reply

I’m so glad you loved the candy! My gummies were so good too. I’d have to say MILKY WAYS are delish and we don’t have those … they are like mars bars but better! I *almost* made a cooking mistake the other day forgetting to put both brown sugar and cayenne pepper in a rub but I remembered at the last minute. When I’m done cooking I always, always, always review all the ingredients in a recipe to make sure I haven’t missed anything before I start to bake it or finish up…it’s saved me a bunch of times!

Ok – I live in Australia and I would be 100% down with a candy swap! Let me know ;)

Also – your sister makes amazing food – maybe an idea for a post with all her recipes would be fun!

Thanks Gilly

Hey Janae! (and fellow blog readers :)

I wanted to share this with you: since kids might not get to go to summer camp this year, there are some awesome programs for them to keep active and fit for their sports while having tons of fun! I know you’re also a huge fan of encouraging girls to grow up strong – so this is the perfect program! They teach unweighted movements like gymnastics, air squats, planks, and more along with fun interactive games so the kids can play together. Right now they also have kids participating for 3 different countries! Check them out:
