I NEEDED + Thursday Things.

My thoughts are all over the place so let’s start with some things that have happened over here the last few days and then finish up with some random notes (so I guess like all of my blog posts:).  Also, I have a new HRG Baby post up HERE if you want to check it out.

During my run on Thursday the high school cross country team turned onto the road I was on and for a few minutes I was following behind a group of 50 or so runners… It almost felt like I was in a race.  It’s crazy how much I’ve missed races and the community of runners at them so it felt good to feel like I was part of a big crowd of runners again.  I can’t believe December was my last race and who knows when the next one will be again.

On Wednesday I had a run with my sister with all of the talking about everything going on.  It was therapeutic.

IMG 4197

The majority of my pregnant runs with Skye were at the 9:22 average pace and this time around a lot of them are right around there too.

IMG 4222

We’ve been doing a lot of art projects in the mornings.

IMG 4224

And we had another day at the waterpark.  Skye loves a good girl chat with my niece by the pool.

IMG 4235

Sitting in the wave pool is going to be a huge part of my summer.

IMG 4233

I’ve eaten tacos more than anything else the last two days.

IMG 4243

Along with a lot of peaches…

IMG 4320

I needed a large pan of cookie type goodness so I made my s’mores bars and they hit the spot.  We were out of Hershey’s bars so I added Rolos, Hershey’s Kisses and Reese’s instead (the base is a graham cracker crust and it is so good.

A few Thursday Things:

*I went through the books in our kid’s rooms and it is time for a major change.  I ordered all sorts of amazing books including POC and their experiences and perspectives.  I can’t wait to share these with my kids.

IMG 4267

*Is anybody else watching Lance on ESPN+?  Are you finding it hard to believe a single word that he has to say?

IMG 4246

*A few people have asked what training plan Andrew will be using for his marathon training and the answer is we are going to come up with it week by week.  His work schedule is so all over the place these days that it is going to be important to work around that with his training!  So I’ll give him a week’s plan each Sunday night.  Let me know if you want me to blog about it each week!  He will have one trail day, one speed day and one long run day with as much biking as he wants on the other days.  Also, if you are interested you can find my first training plan HERE…  The plan consisted of 3 days of running each week and I actually peaked at 30 miles per week along with teaching a few spin classes each week and rest days and had a wonderful race.  High mileage works for some BUT it is NOT needed for all.

IMG 4282

*I heard that Just Mercy is free to rent for the entire month of June to help educate people on systematic racism.  Andrew and I will be watching this tonight here!

Good Morning!!! It would be fun to see Andrew’s training plan.. a bit motivating to see a different plan for mixing a schedule into a busy work week.

I just watched “Just Mercy” last night. Tears, tears, and more tears. Incredibly powerful movie.

Reply

Hey Wendy! Great, then I will definitely post his training each week. I am so glad you watched it and I can’t wait to tonight. Have a beautiful day!

S’mores bars with candy instead of Hershey bars is genius! Sounds delicious.

I knew you would like the way I thought on this one:). Wish I could have you over for them!

Andrew’s plan sound like a winner! Cross training worked better for me than higher mileage, and my personal best training plan was intervals/speed 1x/week and long run 1x/week–sometimes a few “extra” miles in there, but I was cross training 2-3 times/week. Nothing better than a custom plan for his goals :)
I miss the sense in racing of pushing my hardest for a goal, but I had become less enthusiastic about jostling around among lots of runners over the past several years. The few races I’ve done lately were fairly small. I LOVE the spectators, though!
My best friend is the last person I ran with, back in late February/early March when we had a really nice day and left work a few minutes early.
I’ve been following my gym’s programming, but I’m excited to see that today is deadlifts followed by a 30-minute run for distance!! Yay!

Reply

YES YES YES… I love hearing about your PB training plan. We are all so unique and so happy you had that plan. It’s been so long since your last run with someone… I hope you are reunited again soon! A run after deadlifts sounds HARD. Go Corey gooooo!

If you’re buying kids books, you HAVE to get There’s a Flower at the Tip of My Nose Smelling Me by Alice Walker. It’s me absolute favorite and has beautiful pictures! Make sure you read the authors note at the end because it makes the book so much more meaningful!

Reply

I do miss races..sort if but in another way it has been really nice not to * have to hit x miles a day week. I have been running a bit more lately just because I feel like it and without the pressure of having to hit a certain pace.

That hershey cake looks amazing! Will have to try it. We just made a butter pecan bundt cake with orange bourbon and maple and vanilla icing. We dropped off some to my mom but the rest was gone in a day lol.

The last person I ran with was a gf but that was a few months ago. My runs have been solo these days. Not sure what the run will be today. Yesterday I did a tempo run sort of so might be slower today.

Definitely been eating a lot of home made curry lately. And chips and dip!

Have a great day Janae!

Reply

Hey Kristine! I am so happy you are enjoying this time of pressure free running, it’s pretty amazing. Okay, your cake sounds incredible (and quite complex)! Way to get out the tempo yesterday and curry sounds delicious at 9:30 am. Thanks Kristine, you too!

Reply

Thank you for the recommendation, I’m buying it NOW and can’t wait to see the authors note. Have a wonderful day, Kristi!

That kids book is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Thank you for sharing. :) My run today is a recovery run…the last person I ran with was a friend last night, and I was so excited to finally do a workout together! And….I totally failed. It was a relatively easy workout with some shorter intervals at marathon pace, but my stomach was killing me and it was NINETY degrees. It’s so funny how some weeks you have AMAZING workouts and can hit marathon pace for 12 miles, and then some weeks you can’t even do that same pace for 1k. haha. I’m excited to see how Andrew’s training goes!

Reply

SO happy that you were able to do a workout with your friend but HUGE bummer about the heat and stomach issues (heat makes my stomach really struggle). Oh yes, I know that struggle and it just doesn’t make sense! I do also think that where we are at on our cycles also effects how we perform too but some weeks are just struggleville. You are just my hero for training through the weather you do, amazing. Have a beautiful day Mollie!

I love that book you showed that you ordered for your kids! There are some really good instagram accounts dedicated to diverse books (for kids and adults)–@diversereads, @diverse_kids_books, and @hereweread are some great ones! I also love the illustrator Christian Robinson; he does a fantastic job representing all kinds of kids in his artwork.

Those peaches look delicious–one of my favorite things about summer is all the FRUIT. We have been through tons of watermelon and strawberries around here!

Reply

I cannot wait to check out those accounts, thank you so much and I can’t wait to get more. Seriously, the fruit is one of my favorite things about summer too… I wish we could have it year round. Have a wonderful day, Kristin!

I would love for you to include Andrew’s training plan weekly!!!

Reply

I totally will then! Thanks Lisa and have a great day!

It’s an older title (because my babies are now 14 and 16!!!) .. Please Baby, Please was well loved by my kiddos. The “have to tape the pages back to together so we can keep reading it” kind of loved. The illustrations are spot on!! https://www.amazon.com/Please-Baby-Classic-Board-Books/dp/1416949119/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=please+baby+please&qid=1591275009&sprefix=please+ba&sr=8-1

Purchasing NOW! Thank you so much Amy and I love that you had this amazing book for your children and that they loved them so much. I hope your teens are doing well… what a fun stage! Enjoy your Thursday, Amy!

Those s’mores bars look amazing!! May need to make those this weekend.

Yes, please share Andrew’s training plan, I’d be interested to see!

I miss races because I like to push myself and see how I’m improving. But this time has been nice for new and different goals- Des Linden inspired me with her post about racing the speedometer on the road haha. One month I ran more than I drove which was a fun one to accomplish!

Reply

Please make the s’mores bars, you are going to love them! I will totally post it then too! OH I LOVED her post about that too. Run more than drive… you are amazing! Hope your Thursday is off to a great start Mariah!

Reply

I’ve been going through book lists to add to our library, too. Could you please post the rest of the titles you chose, too? Thank you!!!

Reply

I will absolutely! I’ll make the list once we receive them all so I can share pictures and our thoughts on each one. Thank YOU and I hope you have the best day Jenny!

Reply

Thank you, Janae! That would be great! I’ve noticed a lot of the titles on lists I’ve seen are sold out right now, which is exciting, because hopefully it means that a lot of families are trying hard to diversify their home libraries. I’ve been reading a lot and learning how we can change the world for our kiddos, and it definitely starts at home. I’m also trying to add to our toy collection, too. My friend shared this article awhile back, and I think it helps now, too!

Thank you so much for sharing all that you’re doing to listen to, learn from, and support POC. I’m really trying to do the same– dig deep and see how I can be an ally & anti-racist (as opposed to “not racist,” which I’m ashamed to say is so shallow of me and just doesn’t cut it at all). I’m especially ashamed given that my research revolves around POC (specifically the right to housing). I’ll be thinking a lot about how I can amplify their voices while also lessening my own.

Reply

You are amazing Clare and I am so happy to hear what you are doing and it inspires me. Before this all happened I was ‘not racist’ and I totally see what you mean now and I want to do everything I can to be anti-racist. I can’t believe it took me 34 years to get here but we can just focus on what we are doing now! I hope you have a beautiful day and please keep me updated on what you are learning and finding! We’ve got this!

Reply

Hi Janae,
Thank you so much for the encouragement. You are so right, we are all in this together. I wanted to share the Instagram account “moemotivate” (Monique Melton).

Reply

I would love to follow Andrew’s training plan! It sounds super similar to what your coach had you all doing while prepping for your marathon PR so it obviously works!
Those s’mores look amazing and now I’m craving them!
I miss trail races a lot! I use them to meet new people and explore trails I haven’t been on before.
Last person I ran with was my buddy Jess; i joined her on her speed workout of 6×1 mile repeats along the waterfront. Although the route is super flat (11 ft gain!) and I couldn’t keep up with her, I was exhausted for days!
My workout today was Les Mills Body Pump + Mossa Group Centergy via YouTube. The links are below:

Have a great day!

Great, then I will definitely include it! Thanks Jenny and I really want to send you these s’mores bars right now. SO happy you were able to get a workout in with Jess and I want to come to that one on the waterfront… sounds perfect for speed and scenery. How did I not know that pump was on youtube? I miss pump so much and now I can do it. Thank you so much and have a beautiful day.

Yes! Please share Andrew’s plan!

I can’t decide if I want to watch Lance or not. My husband says its interesting, I just don’t know if I can deal with him! I used to love him as an athlete and I lost so much respect for him!

I do miss racing but I’m enjoying having a little extra time to build up my base right now!

Reply

Oh Kristin, I totally understand. He used to be my hero and I read everything he wrote but you are so right… it’s hard to see him now! You are rocking your base and I’m excited for you! I will definitely share then. Have a beautiful day.

Reply

Yes……running plan and more!!! Running pictures, large dessert refuel, frustration with his coach ;) whatever.

Dylan Dreyer( from the Today show) banana bread muffins. Cannot stop eating these the last few days.

Reply

Hahaha YES to all of those things (frustration with his coach made me laugh so hard). Well, now I need to make those muffins. They sound amazing. Hope you are having a beautiful morning Erica and YAY for school being over

Remember you can order books from independent book stores to support them during the pandemic!
http://www.bookshop.org supports independent ones all over in case you can’t find some books locally.

Also – http://www.biblio.com has a great selection of used books for older titles.

This has some good recommendations I have earmarked: https://www.blackstonebookstore.com/black-men-read-wishlist

Reply

I had not even thought about this… thank you so much and I will be ordering from them now. Also, thank you for the wishlist recommendation too. I hope you have a beautiful day, Mary!

Reply

I was going to say the same thing! We shouldn’t be ordering these books from Amazon and putting more money in Jeff Bezos’s pockets. You can google black-owned bookstores and help support them by purchasing these books through them. Makes the whole effort to educate ourselves about POC even more meaningful.

Reply

I did the same with my 7 year old daughter’s bookshelf earlier this week. I’m making it a priority to read to her the few ‘diverse’ books that she has, and I ordered a couple more books from the local bookstore, and a couple from Amazon. Some of the books are about race or racism, and some of the books don’t focus on race but have a person of color as the main character.

I use to think it was enough just to be a good person in my daily life. Now I understand the difference between ‘not being a racist’ and being anti-racist.

I just love babies their swimsuits, so sweet!

It has been so hot here (106 today) that we are basically eating anything that we don’t have to bake. Last night was BLTAs and my husband smoked the bacon, so yummy!!

I miss racing!! I coach xc and we aren’t allowed to meet with the kids, but we have them running on their own. I can’t wait to all run together again!

Today I ran with my boys and hubby. I’m so thankful that I have crazy family members that will get you before the sun and run hills with me!

Hi Janae! I’d love to see Andrew’s training plan! I haven’t run a marathon yet because I wanted to get my weekly mileage up first, and so then I decided I wanted to get faster first to save time. So I’m really intrigued to see a plan for someone who isn’t already running thirty miles per week!
I did a social distancing run with a friend a few days ago- we took turns with one person in the street and one on the sidewalk. It was nice to catch up.
I got a big bag of dried mangoes at the start of quarantine and now I’ve finished them.. trying to decide if I should repurchase or move on to another treat.
Have a great day!

Reply

Oh my gosh those smores bars look delicious. Now I’m planning another treat for over the weekend… I made no bake oatmeal cookies last weekend.
My husband is watching Lance & he told me he was trying to separate the cancer survivor Lance from the doping Lance. He says he still thinks he may have some things to share from his cancer info. efforts perspective. Not sure how I feel about that .. Rich Roll had an interesting podcast on him a while back.
I need to get better at the run-whenever-you-can-fit-it-in style of training. With kids it’s essential but it is just not my nature. I’m such a run-at-X-time-every-day type of person. But then I don’t always get my run in!
Back to my outdoor night-time runs now that the chaos has calmed down. Hoping for 2-3 fast miles.
PS – thanks for the Just Mercy tip!

I would love to know Andrews training plan and a little “recap” of the prior week’s training and how it went! I am missing races SO bad and all the fall ones in my area have already been canceled :-( I am SO bummed!!

Oh yummy tacos! The only time I had a mad craving for Tacos was when I had my son. I couldn’t get enough tacos and chips and salsa and burritos! When I was pregnant with girls i wanted breakfast food constantly. ?

Oh that water park is so awesome! You’re in for a fun summer! ?‍♀️

Yes yes please share Andrew’s training! It’ll be fun to read! Is he trying to PR? Or is he running for fun? Either way it’ll be great! ?

Have a wonderful Thursday! I almost typed Wednesday. All days are running together lately! ?

My husband and I have been watching Lance, and OMG, I don’t even know how I feel. I guess I am just in completely floored at some of his answers. I hate to feel this way too because I was always a huge fan, even after the doping really. I never really watched too much of the coverage when it was going on because I didn’t want to believe it. I’ll just say that this series has definitely not helped to portray him in a positive light at all, in my opinion. I have my mouth open in shock for most of the episode.

I’ve been so sad lately over what all is going on in the world. It’s hard for me as a white woman to even know what to say and not be criticized in some way. I’m praying for the situation and am trying hard to just be kind and always show love!

Reply

I’ve wanted to watch Lance’s 30 for 30…but I cannot believe anything he says. I remember reading his book years ago and really found him inspirational. Now, he comes off as extremely narcissistic and egotistical. I’ve listened to a couple of his podcasts as well, one with Ryan Hall, and found him kind of disrespectful, everything is a joke or something, not professional.

Hey there! First congratulations on your new baby on the way! So exciting! I have a question that has nothing to do with your post , :) but would you mind in one of your Friday favorites putting up some reviews on your running shorts? I looked in your running favorite tab but they are all either sold out or they don’t carry them anymore. I usually keep mine for a few years then need new ones and this is my year! I do love the lululemon 5” tracker shirts but they are pricey right now and not very colorful!
Thanks in advance!

Hey Karen!! I really need to update my gear page… SO SORRY about that! A few weeks ago I wrote about some of my favorites here… let me know if this helps and I hope you are having a wonderful day!

typically run alone but would love someone to run with, hold me accountable, and actually get me out there! been defaulting to the spin bike and peloton rides a lot lately. i eat basically the same thing for all meals, so nothing really more lately… but dessert has been a bit out of control :)
OMG I HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THE LANCE DOCUMENTARY! and no one watched it so i have been harboring all these thoughts; gah! what an, um, interesting documentary. i found myself gaping a lot, and yes to barely believing a LOT of what he was saying. man, super crazy is all i will say. so glad i watched but my goodness…!
