Our brains go where we tell them & tangents!

My run thought for the day: ‘Our brain goes where we tell it.’  If we take that and apply it to running—> Our body goes where our brain tells it to go which is excellent news for our running dreams!  It is up to the way we choose to think about ourselves and our running that decides what our body will do with our goals.

When I go into a race, trail run or workout confident and telling myself that I can and will do it, it’s amazing how my body will just follow my brain’s confidence in myself.  When I start out a hard workout or race unsure of myself or questioning my goals or thinking negatively about myself then there is no chance of success for me.  Of course we have to have the fitness behind these workouts and races but if we tell our brain the way to think and it’s positive, our body will bring it’s “A” game!

PS Andrew told me that he repeated ‘our brain goes where we tell it’ over and over again as he was climbing a tough hill the other day and that it worked for him.  He got to the top without stopping when he usually does take a break!

I did 8 miles @ 9:08 average pace and 6 of those miles with my sister.

I came home from my run to find Brooke out playing with the chickens and feeding them.

IMG 5534

We then went to tennis and Brooke is joining me in a smoothie each morning.  I don’t really measure anything and I just throw it all in but I probably should try a new recipe or add in new ingredients to keep things exciting.

IMG 5536

I needed sushi big time and luckily my grocery store offers rolls with cooked fish in them!  It hit the spot.

IMG 5513

After lunch the girls came with me to get my eyebrows tinted and waxed and Skye was a little freaked out when she saw the change:

IMG 5543

Brooke spent time collecting small bugs for my sister’s youngest boy.  My nephew wants pet roly-pollies and caterpillars so we took it upon ourselves to help him out with this;)

IMG 1487

We also spent some time outside on a nature walk.

IMG 5590

Pasta has been another food that I can’t get enough of so we had another pasta night with the addition of garlic bread.  We made this Sun-Dried Tomato Pasta but used steak instead of chicken.  I will definitely be making this again and I can’t wait for the leftovers today.

I have some tangents to talk about now!

*Skye has started sharing her favorite thing (bandaids) with Beretta and I’m sure Beretta is thankful for that.

*You guys give me the absolute best tips ever.

Thank you Sheri for this one and I now have frozen spinach in bags for my smoothies!  I didn’t have wax paper but it worked great on my baking mat that I love.

IMG 5544

*My sister sent me this picture saying that this cookie is her worst nightmare.  Her chocolate chip cookie preference is 1 (MAYBE 2) chocolate chips per cookie so this is just too much for her.

IMG 5530

*I relate to this so so much.

*I came across what I think might be from my very first race ever in 2007.  My aunt was VERY into triathlons so I joined her on a few sprint triathlons!  I remember being terrified of the bike portion because all I had done leading up to the race was indoor biking!  I didn’t crash so I’ll call it a success.

*That constant need to recover while in marathon training:

Chocolate chip cookies—> Lots of chocolate chips, medium or are you like my sister?  Cakelike, chewy or crispy?

How do you judge when it is time to wash your hair or is it a daily thing or do you have set days for when you do each week?

What other veggies do you add to breakfast smoothies?  What smoothie combos are your favorite? I’d love to try them out!

Who has done a triathlon?  Any plans to in the future?

I have signed up for a Half Ironman in October (hopefully it doesn’t get delayed or cancelled). I am loving the training and mixing it up with the different workouts. I never thought I would say that I really enjoy swimming workouts! Or I never thought I would say how excited I am to be doing it!

Reply

Katrina! I am SO so excited for you and you’ll have to keep me updated on your training and the race plans! SO happy you are loving it and the change between each workout. Keep enjoying it and have a great day.

This green smoothie is incredible. For myself I typically leave out the juice & add vanilla protein powder. Another combo is with pineapple instead.

I like adding beets to my smoothies! I make the Can’t Beet Me Smoothie from Run Fast Eat Slow (except I don’t measure anything anymore haha). That recipe also encouraged me to throw in ginger to every smoothie- I bought these little frozen cubes which makes it really easy. And ginger helps with digestion, upset stomach, immunity!

I struggle with the washing hair too- I usually do every other day, but then sometimes I’ll push if I’m working out in the morning. I don’t want to wash if I’m going to get it dirty again so soon!

Reply

Do you cook the beets? Where did you find ginger cubes? And one more – what kind of coconut water do you like? Thanks!

Reply

Yes, I cook the beets in the microwave or buy pre-cooked beets! Here’s the instructions I’ve used to cook:
https://www.cookinglight.com/cooking-101/how-to-microwave-beets-hack

I’ve found cooked beets and frozen ginger at a few grocery stores and Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, Target. https://www.dorotgardens.com/project/crushed-ginger/

For coconut water, I get either the TJ’s or Sprouts brand if I’m there. I’ve tried Vita Coco and Zico too! I don’t really taste the coconut water with all the other flavors in the smoothie, so I pick more based on price.

Reply

Smoothies: I always add a little lime juice, pinch of salt and a little yogurt. I learned from my nephew’s wife who owns a smoothie shop in Thailand!

Reply

I have never thought of adding those things… thank you so much Jenn! Have a great day!

Reply

Hey Mariah, your smoothies sound so so healthy! Here is my question if you have time… I hate beets normally so will I be able to taste them in the smoothie or are they covered up by the other flavors? YES… the working out again soon thing is always what convinces me to go another day or two ha. Have a beautiful day!

Reply

I can’t taste them! The banana and blueberries and nut butter hide the flavor. I would buy the beets pre-cooked though if you don’t like them. The smell of cooked beets made me nervous the first time that I wouldn’t like it, I almost didn’t try it haha.

Reply

AWESOME! Thanks so much, I will try them!!

I am currently making smoothies for breakfast almost every day now and I also love cooked beets in my smoothies! My current favorite is: 1/2 banana, 1 small cooked beetroot, handful of strawberries or blueberries, 2 tbsps of nut butter, handful of spinach, bit of milk or your choice, maybe some flaxseeds too. I also add 1 espresso to my banana/spinach/raspberry smoothie which is a wonderful combo if you love coffee like I do.

Ha ha ha! Is your sister as happy with your support of her son’s bug farm? At least it’s not a percussion instrument band, LOL!
My chocolate chip cookies should have at least 3 -5 chips per bite and be chewy :)
Washing my hair has become a rather occasional event. When I was younger and it was short, it was EVERY day, lots of product and styling. Once I started coloring the greys, it didn’t get as oily, and it’s long now, so ponytails and buns pretty much look the same clean or dirty. But since I’ve been working from home…um…probably every 5-6 days based on the same reasoning about working out and just getting sweaty again, LOL!

Reply

Hahaha she is just thrilled about it… she does seem to always give my kids a toy that makes a lot of noise for their bdays so I think we are even now;) I hope you get one of those cookies asap. YAY for every 5-6 days, I feel you on that:) Have a beautiful day Corey!

Reply

Every morning I make my kids and I a smoothie with spinach, beet, banana, frozen fruit (either mixed berry, mango or cherry, whatever they have at the grocery store) and coconut water with a little bit of coconut milk. It’s really good! I’ve also added frozen cauliflower, but I usually forget to buy it haha. When they move out of daycare to elementary school I’m going to add some almond butter too, but I can’t now with nut allergies in their classes.
Hahahaha the hair thing made me laugh. I usually do Wednesday’s and Saturday’s after my workouts/long runs in the summer, unless it’s really bad. In the winter I can go really long with dry shampoo. Like, too long. :)

Reply

I haven’t ever thought about coconut milk/water and frozen california… brilliant! Thanks for helping. Thank goodness for dry shampoo and I like your schedule of hair washing (based around your workouts… that’s awesome)! Have a great day friend.

It feels like a long time since I “chatted” with you..ha ha.
My whole house is definitely on the as many chocolate chips as possible in a cookie! And we like them chewy with a tiny crunch.
I’m reading How Bad Do You Want It right now, so yes, your mind/thoughts are so important on how your workout or race goes. I am really starting to understand that now.
I am loving reading what everyone puts in their smoothies. I tend to do the same: spinach, kale, blueberries, banana, tumeric, and ice. Then in the summer I will add strawberries, watermelon or pineapple. I did have a smoothie mix once that had beets, and it was really good.
I am not a swimmer, so I have never done a triathlon, but my husband completed an Ironman in 2018, and said it was one the BEST experiences of his life! It was a long day, but it was pretty amazing and special.
I love seeing the kids enjoying the chickens. And those chickens have gotten big!
Have a wonderful Tuesday ?

I am totally with your sister. I just want maybe 2 or 3 chocolate chips. I prefer a chewy cookie and I always add extra salt to my dough. Pre-quarantine I washed my hair everyday except for Sunday. Now there have been days that I am not sure when the last time I did wash it. I finally have a hair appointment this week and cannot wait! I have actually done a number of triathlons. Sprint and Olympic distance mostly and one Half IronMan. I do miss it and will probably do another one next year even though I really do not enjoy the bike portion.

Reply

I hope you get your perfect cookie asap! Quarantine sure has changed up so many things in our lives! Enjoy your first hair appointment back, that is going to feel amazing. You have rocked the triathlons… I can’t imagine doing a Half Ironman! The bike portion just freaks me out because I want to race and do my best but I’m so afraid of crashing. I hope you have a wonderful day Corrinne!

I love your questions- they always get me thinking!

Hair washing – I put this off for as long as possible… every 3/4 days is my usual, I can push it to five but then my head starts to get itchy…(gross, I know lol)

Triathlon – I once did A try-a-tri And I thought I was going to die. My brother-in-law has done like six full Iron Man’s… I don’t know how he does it!!

Re: freezing the spinach for smoothies – I’m the person that just shoves it all into a Ziploc bag and freezes it into a big clump. BUT It breaks apart really easily so I’ve never had a problem adding small amounts to smoothies… In case you wanted to save yourself the baking sheet step.

Reply

I totally relate.. I put it off as long as I can. SIX FULL Iron Man’s, that is incredible. I will try that next time, thanks so much Andrea! I need all of the tips I can get. Have a wonderful day.

Reply

I have done a triathlon or two :P

More chocolate=more better though I also like cookie dough so really the answer is an unlimited quantity of both.

Reply

If you ever need some tips for me with triathlons with my expertise, just let me know;). I can’t wait to see you out racing again. Perfect cookie answer.

* Brooke looks SO tall in your nature walk picture! We love nature walks too. Lately my kids enjoy collecting pinecones for no specific purpose.
* Chocolate chip cookies—> Slightly underbaked(chewy) and definitely way less chips than the recipes call for. But I’m okay with a few more than 1. OVERbaked cookies are not ruined though – they are ice cream toppings!
* Washing hair – ugh I wait as long as possible, but mostly it’s twice per week. My hair is pretty used to that schedule.
* Cauliflower is a great smoothie veg – try frozen & it works like ice, and doesn’t change the flavor much at all.
I admire the triathletes – so many activities to train for; my brain is overwhelmed just thinking about it! The best I have done is a duathalon – it was skating & running. They only did it for a few years – unfortunate because it was something I was actually good at & placed each year. Oh well!

Reply

Right, she has just shot up over this quarantine. Hahah we have one of those collections too. I could not agree more with you on your ideal cookie situation and the fact that overbaked cookies should not be eaten plane. I will totally pick up cauliflower, thank you so much! Skating and running, that sounds AWESOME! I hope you can do them more up ahead. Have a great day Katie!

Reply

My kids are collecting pine cones too and they are just sitting in this giant heap in the garage lol. I’m glad someone else is experiencing this!!

Reply

That’s so funny Torie – yes we previously had a rock “garden” and now we have a pinecone “garden” too. I will need to google pinecone crafts soon… or else someday they will mysteriously be “taken by a racoon” or something!

Lots of chocolate chips and chewy! and milk chocolate chips!
My hair is in a ponytail most days and just looks better when it is not freshly washed. My hair is SO much healthier only washing it once or twice a week!

I make a smoothie everyday for lunch and I put in spinach, chia seeds, one scoop of protein powder, banana, and some kind of berry. I always want to try a “recipe”. but I always find myself just throwing in the same things!

I hope you are feeling good, have a great day!

Reply

Hey Melissa! I totally agree with you, I like the look of my hair better the day after it’s been washed! I’ll be adding some chia seeds to mine today now, thanks so much and you too!

Avocado is amazing in smoothies!!

I will add that today, thanks Katrina!

I’d recognize that cookie anywhere! That is a chocolate chip cookie from Gideon’s Bake House here in Orlando, Fl. I live behind their bakeshop (in East End Market in the Audubon Park neighborhood) and can attest that their cookies are INCREDIBLE. They do not ship, but they are opening a location at Disney Springs, so if anyone is ever on vacation down in the Disney area, you will also be able to them there. They have of other flavors, including chocolate dipped cookies, and do cakes by request.

Reply

NO WAY! Okay, that is so so cool! Well, now we will have to come to Disney Springs to come experience them… I need one of those chocolate dipped cookies! My kids have been begging to go to Disney World so hopefully it happens soon and I’ll make you meet me for cookies. Have a wonderful day Jennifer!

Medium chips in cookies (and chocolate chips can go in ANY cookie)! Smoothie – try half a frozen banana, frozen pineapple chunks (I cut up fresh ripe pineapple and freeze them myself), and vanilla protein powder (with whatever liquid you like). It is soooo yummy!

Reply

Okay, that combo sounds DELICIOUS! Thank you so much Jennifer!

Reply

A good cookie should have a very high chocolate to dough ratio. Honestly, I would probably just skip the cookie and eat a bag of chocolate chips.

You just said you don’t measure haha but what do you usually put in your smoothie?! I’m usually pretty boring, but I just discovered an amazing combo: mango, coconut chunks (I found them with the frozen fruit at my grocery store), banana and milk! So good. sometimes I throw a little yogurt (or ice cream!) in there too.

Have a great day :) It’s hair washing day for me today (Tuesdays and Saturdays haha) I like structure in my routine.

Reply

Hahaha you and my sister are very opposite with your cookie opinions but Brooke is fully on board with your opinion. Lately I have been putting in some type of milk, strawberries, blueberries, banana, spinach and peanut butter but now I want to try your combo. That sounds amazing, especially the coconut chunks, YUM! Hahah good luck with the hair washing and I’m thankful mine was yesterday;). Have a great day friend!

I’m envious of everyone who makes smoothies…. I just don’t have the patience! Ha!
I like a few chips in my cookies. We’ve been doing half white chips and half semi sweet and their super delicious!
I wash my hair when I run; I only run 3-4 days a week. I just don’t get that sweaty doing strength or yoga so I don’t see the point. Running though …. man alive …. sweaty betty!
I’ve thought about doing a dualthon since I’m not a strong swimmer but the season is super short and I always miss my chance!
Have a great day!

Reply

I’m not going to lie, the clean up of smoothies definitely gets annoying. I will try your chocolate chip combo, Brooke would love that and I would too! I hope you get a chance to go rock a duathlon some day, I’ll be cheering for you! Have a great day Jenny!

Reply

I do like a lot of chocolate chips – but maybe not that many. And definitely like chewy the best.

Washing my hair depends on how it feels, how much I sweat and what I’m doing the next day. I like to go 2-3 days without washing. Love dry shampoo. I’ve also been trying to use condition first and then shampoo and that has seemed to help with it feel less greasy too.

Do you ever pre-make your smoothies? I wonder if they settle weird to do that but I don’t always have time during the week to make them.

Reply

Hey Erika! I hope you get a chocolate chip cookie cooked perfectly for you soon:). Seriously, what did we do without dry shampoo? I don’t pre-make mine but maybe I’ll try it and get back to you! Have a beautiful day, Erika.

What is the device Andrew is using in the last pic? I think I remember you posting about it before but I can’t find it!

Reply

I’m training for a half ironman (hopefully) so I was my hair on swim days or every fourth day. And as needed if I get really sweaty. My hair probably could have used a wash today but I’ll be in the pool with the kids and I’m swimming in the ocean tomorrow am.

Roasted beets and strawberries with a drop of honey was a smoothie I made last year that I loved. I think I used orange juice. Beets turn EVERYTHING red, be warned.

And the more chocolate chips the better! Lately my tv snack has been a handful of almonds and a bunch of chocolate chips. It’s been way too hot to bake.

Reply

Ok Brooke looks so old in that picture! My Daughter is 7 (almost 8) and she grew so much this year her size 7/8 bathing suits don’t fit! Off to Walmart to restock.
I love a classic chocolate protein powder, almond milk, frozen banana and a spoonful of PB for my go to shake. Sometimes I make a “black cherry” one with chocolate protein powder, frozen cherries almond milk, a tsp of cocoa powder and ice. As you can tell I’m all about the chocolate. :)
I want to start trail running and if you can provide a shoe suggestion I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks :)

Spinach, butternut squash, pumpkin for smoothies ( not all at once!!). My family really likes the bananas and strawberry combo and doesn’t like me to mess with it a lot.

If there were no chips in my cookie I would be ok!!!

So I saw the doctor today and a heel stress fracture. I am in an Achilles boot which puts me in a wedge so I am on my toes. He wants to give the heel cord a break. He thinks all the jumping I did in my COVID cross training workouts is what did this and not running, sigh… Its going to take a few months, not the most easy areas to heal apparently. So onward to core and upper body!! I was biking but he said absolutely not, maybe swimming in 4 weeks. It was funny because he said “ okay so I have to shut this all down now” and I had no clue what he meant. He meant in a boot!
So anyone have experience with a heel stress fracture? When I thought it was plantar fasciitis everyone was so kind with advice and I quickly learned this was a lot different!!

I really want to get into making smoothies more but i can’t get over the fact that I don’t want to wash the blender and getting out so many different ingredients sounds like a hassle everyday. Do you follow weelicious on Instagram? She has a Smoothie cookbook now but she’s always talking about her daily smoothies. I also would like a nicer blender but can’t justify it if I don’t start making them more often.

Reply

Hi Mary – I’m popping in to say that the clean up really isn’t that bad and I think you should invest ;) I stick to maybe 5 ingredients so making the smoothie goes quick. After, I just do a super quick rinse of the pitcher with water, then add a drop of dish wash liquid and warm water, swish that around and then pour the soapy water over the lid. Then rinse both with water and really that’s it. 9 times out of 10 I don’t have to scrub. I have a Blendtec at home but we have a Ninja at work, and it works great for a way more reasonable price.

Reply

Your sister is crazy. The more chocolate chips the better IMO!
Also, I just want to say THANK YOU. I was struggling to get out of bed this morning to run, and right after I decided I *definitely* wasn’t going to get up, I stopped by your blog, felt inspired, and got my butt out of bed to do some speed work! Might have to make that part of my morning routine until I get back into the swing of waking up early ;)

Haha- my friend and I go get our brows dyed together and we always take a selfie together when the dye is in. One of these days I should put a collage of the pics together- pretty freaky looking.
Is it just me or have Brooks legs grown like 6 inches this summer already?!
I am on the “fewer is better” chocolate chip cookie train!

Reply

I either do a chocolately version (oat milk, chocolate protein powder, banana, blueberry & spinach) or a tropical version (coconut water, pineapple, mango, banana & spinach). Brilliant on freezing the spinach, I’m going to do that!

For cookies, chewy and lots of choc chips + sea salt!

I usually wash my hair 2 times a week, but that’s definitely been stretched out during COVID. We still aren’t seeing clients at the office so I’m totally taking advantage of wearing yoga or running clothes and pony tails & buns!

Reply

I’ve done a couple triathlons! It was one of the most fun and rewarding things I’ve ever done but they stopped doing the event a couple of years ago. I would love to do another event in the future though!

Also, chocolate chip cookies need about 1-3 chocolate chips per bite. Like a 4 to 1 cookie to chips ratio!

This one for Iowa girl eats is incredible. I also like to switch mango for pineapple & spinach for kale depending on what I have. Also for myself I’ll sometimes skip the juice & add vanilla protein powder with water. But for green smoothie skeptics the juice is the way to go!

Reply

If my greens are starting to go bad (or if I buy more than I know I can use raw) I’ll blend them up with a little water – basically make spinach or kale juice. Then I freeze it in ice cube trays and can easily pop a few cubes into my smoothie! I also add frozen cauliflower to smoothies because you can’t taste it and it adds a lot of nutrients and gives it a smooth texture :)

Reply

I love cucumber in my smoothies! Obviously, it wouldn’t be good in every smoothie but it just adds a great refreshing taste. It is so good!

How exciting to see my spinach tip in your blog today! Glad I commented with that tip. It is one of my favorites. Buy the big bag Or power greens at Costco and freeze half and eat half.

Those eyebrows freaked me out, too! They look plastic. Andrew’s smile looks like your sister’s youngest in the recovery photo. Really liking the spinach tip from Sheri, and now I see she added another in the comments for freezing half the bag! I buy frozen organic spinach now that I’m thinking about it. I rinse and drain it before incorporating/ cooking. However, this concept can be used for other perishables….
