A Virtual Race, I COUNT it ALL + Weekend Recap!

I told my sister on Friday that I was going to do the Virtual Indy Mini the next day and she wanted to join which I was thrilled about.

We will definitely always remember this run and we laughed a good chunk of the run.   We took it nice and carefree and I’m so proud of my sister and how well she is running.  I just need to convince her to do a marathon next;)

We used old socks for gloves because it wasn’t quite cold enough for gloves but it was too cold to not use anything… And this way if we really needed to we could drop them along the way too but we ended up just putting them in our pockets.

My favorite canyon!  We ended up seeing all of my running friends along the way at different times which felt SO good because it has been so so long since the last time I saw them.  Now to find my next virtual race:)

When I got home Skye was not excited because she thought I wanted my spot back in bed ha.  She loves cuddling with Andrew in the morning.

Our other Saturday highlights were buying tomato plants to plant because I’m too worried our seeds aren’t going to work this year.  Starting the foot massages on Mother’s Day Eve.

Now let’s skip over to Sunday—> crepes with homemade syrup in bed (plus two more crepes).

My biggest request for the day was to go on a long hike.

IMG 2948

We went up to Big Springs and the girls explored their little hearts out.

IMG 2928

We did about 2.5 miles and Brooke told us she is going to build a house here to live in when she grows up.

IMG 2918

We finished the day off with dinner at my sister’s house and then did a porch visit with my parents!

*The other day I was watching this clip from Gwen Jorgensen as she explains how they keep track of mileage.  They go off of ‘Jerry Miles’ rather than GPS miles.  I am still not completely sure how they figure out the Jerry Miles but she also talked about how if they run 9.5 miles they count it as 9 miles.  I 10000% add in each and every .XX into my weekly mileage and maybe I’m alone in this but every step counts towards my weekly totals—>  Last week was 53.49 miles!

Most random question of the day… is there a song that always makes you cry?  This one makes me cry EVERY SINGLE TIME I listen to it and I just can’t get through it.

IMG 2895

What about you, do you add in the .XX into your weekly mileage or do you round down or up?  I’d love to hear what everyone does.  Do you usually stop right on the mile or just whenever you get home?

Have you done any virtual races or do you have any planned?

What was the best part of your weekend?

ABSOLUTELY every little .XX counts. I would even add steps if I could. I have been working up the C25K program, but have been lacking motivation because there was nothing for me to do once it is over. However, you have inspired me to sign up for a virtual race!!! Thanks!

Kelly, this makes me so so happy! Please keep me updated with what you sign up for and how it goes. Glad I’m not the only one counting each and every step! Have a beautiful Monday.

Happy belated Mother’s Day! I heard Shalane talk about Jerry miles on a podcast before. She said they go off of time and count every 8 minutes as a mile for women and 7 minutes for men. She said it obviously ends up being a lot more than that some days and less on easy days but that they care more about time on the roads and callusing their legs than they do exact mileage. (I listen to every podcast she does—she is just the best!)

Here’s an article I found about it: https://www.highperformancewest.com/blog/2018/8/19/jerry-miles

Thank you thank you thank you! Cannot wait to read more about this and I totally agree, I want to listen to every podcast possible that has Shalane on it. She is just the best. I hope you have a great Monday, Emily!

I have a virtual half marathon this coming weekend! The Harpers Ferry Half.

I round down or up to the .5 mile when I’m tracking mileage in my agenda. But I’ll usually keep running until I get home, even if that adds more than planned!

Good luck this weekend! I’m excited for you and hopefully you have a fun course planned! That’s a great idea to round to the .0 or .5… that way you don’t get random numbers like mine. I hope your week is off to a great start, Mariah!

Awwwwww yeah virtual running races. Something to look forward to and make us get out the door. Though a virtual marathon, all 26.2 miles, I don’t think I could do that unsupported. That would be crazy. Have you seen the people doing the yeti challenge and stuff like that? Run 4 miles ever 4 hours for 24 hours? I call it the laundry marathon haha.

Reply

Laundry marathon hahah! Yes, I’ve seen a lot of people do that and also a lot doing virtual marathons too… I’m amazed! That takes a whole lot of dedication. I hope you made something delicious this weekend. Thanks Victoria!

I saw that video Gwen posted too! The concept of Jerry miles confuses me, I want to know the exact amount of mileage I run! I guess when you’re a pro runner it doesn’t matter as much. Although Jerry’s athletes seem to do well so maybe he knows something that we don’t.

One song that always makes me cry is “The Girl You Think I Am” by Carrie Underwood. It’s the song I want to have for my father daughter dance at my wedding. Also this wedding is very far off and I’m newly single lol but I still want it!

Reply

Hahah I’m just like you… I want to know EXACTLY what I’m doing! They all seem so laid back about the overall mileage etc but you are right, they are all incredible so it must be great! Time for me to look up that song and that will be an amazing experience in the future. I hope you are doing okay and feeling at peace with the break-up! Thinking about you Maureen!

I am at peace with the break up actually. Your emails were SO helpful Janae! I appreciated your responses so much and am so grateful <3

I am so so glad! You are so strong.

I round up for mileage!

That’s awesome! I love hearing how everyone does it. Have a really great Monday, Mary!

Hi Janae! Happy belated Mother’s Day! Totally unrelated to your post today, but can you share the spin bike you use? I have seen you post about it before, but can’t seem to find the model. Thank you!!!

Hey Allison! Thank you so much! Here is the link to the bike, I’ve loved it for many years and I hope you do too. Have a beautiful day!

Re: the “Jerry miles,” I’ve listened to several podcasts with women on the Bowerman team, and apparently Jerry has them go by time, rather than miles , and it’s always in multiples of 8, because he counts each 8 minutes as one mile. I think that’s to keep them from focusing on pace when they’re supposed to be running easy, or by effort? I’m not really sure… But anyway, that’s why the Jerry miles are always less than the actual GPS miles, because they’re all so fast that they almost never run as slow as an 8 minute pace! I don’t know how they manage it, though, because not getting the “credit” for all of the real miles would drive me crazy!

Reply

Thank you Catherine and that definitely makes more sense but I’m with you… I want the credit for each mile! I wonder how many of their miles each week are actually at an 8 pace? Hope you have a great day!

Hi Janae.
First of all that looks like a lovely spot for Brooke to have a house!
Regarding the song that makes me cry, i have a bunch of those. But i also cry during movies (Toy Story is just impossible for me), tv shows, etc. I’m terrible and can’t watch a sad movie outside my house because it’s always totally awkward.
I love it when you share songs and podcasts that you like listening to while you run so i thought i’d tell you about what i’ve been listening to as well. i don’t know if you have heard of Harry Potter at Home on spotify. Famous people read the first books of the series. It started with Daniel Radcliffe and it’s great for fans of the books. I remembered that you have some huge fans in your family so maybe they’ll like these too.
Sorry for the long comment.
Have a great week

HEY PATRICIA! Oh you are not alone in crying during Toy Story, I do too! THANK YOU for sharing this with me, I will absolutely be checking that out and Andrew and the kids will love it too. I LOVE long comments so thank you for filling me in and I hope you are having a beautiful Monday!

I usually count to the .X, because it’s easier for me to keep track of in my head than the .XX . . . but, um, how could you NOT even count the tenths?? Those are very important distances!

That same song you shared makes me tear up, and her song Soon You’ll Get Better makes me cry every time. She really knows how to make you feel things.

So glad you had a good Mother’s Day! That hike looks beautiful!

I was supposed to be in cape cod this past weekend running a Ragnar race for 22q (my husband and daughter have it). My team of 22 people ran a virtual Ragnar instead!! And we’re doing another one this coming weekend!

No way. What an incredible group and just so so cool that you all still did it! Can’t wait to hear about the one this weekend! Thanks Erin for sharing!

It looks like you had a fabulous Mothers Day Janae!

Impressive that you found matching socks to wear as mittens–mine would have probably been one of my kids and one of mine;-)

I count all my.XX miles! I also always stop on .00, .25, .50 or .75. I like to end my weekly milage on an even number or 5 so (40, 42, 45, 46, 48, 50, etc). When I first started running I assumed everyone did the same. I was shocked when some people just end “when they feel like it” What?!? I have Grandma’s half marathon. You can run it any time from May 1-July 31. I haven’t picked a date yet.

Best part of my weekend was Mothers Day and my youngest 5th birthday. He was not too impressed on having to “share” the day with me. He asked me yesterday “does my birthday fall on Mother’s Day next year?” I told him it didn’t. He replied “oh good, then I have a day where I can just be the boss” haha.

Happy Monday!

I’ve done a few virtual challenges on Strava if those count. And i have a “real:” virtual 5K this upcoming weekend for a race I signed up for a long time ago.

It was in the 80’s here both days over the weekend. I enjoyed some donuts and iced coffee with the wife down by the Everett Marina, a nice 5 mlle run-walk Saturday, and a 3 mile hike with my son Sunday. It was a great weekend – but a bit too warm for us in this area with no air conditioning.

I have an appointment tomorrow with a different DPM to go over my toe issue – and hopefully come up with a good game plan.

Have a great day!

Question on virtual races, and maybe I’m overthinking it, but I’m considering pushing for PR in a virtual this year. Do you run slightly farther than race distance to account for typically not hitting the tangents? I don’t feel like it will be a “real” PR if I only do 13.1 exactly, because I wouldn’t do that on race day. What would be a reasonable distance for a half? 13.2? Farther? I never race with my GPS on, so I have no idea how far I usually run.

Reply

That is such a great question and I didn’t even think about that! I stopped right at 13.1! But you are so right, races are usually a bit more than that because of the turns etc! Anyone else have an opinion on this? I hope you are having a beautiful day, Ashley!

Best part of the weekend was seeing my mom, sister, and nephew for Mother’s Day. I sat in their driveway while they sat on the porch and we all had a mimosa together. Our state is allowing small gatherings starting on Friday so I hope to be able to hug them again soon! We’ve been doing virtual Sunday dinners every week of quarantine so it was nice to be in person with them, but still not the same.

Happy Mothers Day!

I want to run the Indy Mini someday! I live a few hours North of Indy and it’s on my list!! I did a virtual 5k a few weeks ago but that is it. I kind of want to do some more! I absolutely add every extra tenth into my weekly miles lol, although I do try and round to a specific mile most of the time when I’m actually running.

Happy belated Mother’s Day!
I’m all over the place with counting mileage! It mostly depends on my mood; yesterday on the trails my friend and I back tracked to hit 5 miles rather than have 4.79 on our watches. Today I ran 13.38 miles when I should have stopped at 13.1 for my virtual half but I spaced it and then contemplated running to 13.5 or 14 but bagged it because I was too tired! I usually run until mileage is an even number or run time is an even number.
This was for the East Coast vs. West Coast virtual and was my 2nd virtual run of the pandemic; the first was the Bigfoot 5k which was a Strava event.
The best part of my weekend was the sunrise trail run I did with a friend I haven’t seen in months, spending so much time outside w/ my kiddos, eating Phad Thai for dinner and binge watching all the race movies on Outside TV (before the free trial is over!) ; La Ultra was probably my favorite.
Have a great day!

“Christmas Shoes” ALWAYS, 100% of the time, makes me cry. I heard it for the first time my first Christmas without my Mom (she died in October, so I was raw.) The line, ” mama made Christmas good at our house, though most years she just did without,” fit her to a T.

I count whatever mileage is on my watch, don’t round up or down. Definitely just stop when I get home or back to my car.

I’ve done a few virtual races. I’m doing the Hot Chocolate 15k this month (https://www.hotchocolate15k.com/)

I was on the music team for our church’s live stream again, so I got to be at church for a few hours yesterday. It was sad not seeing all the moms being celebrated.

Hi I am actually in the middle of a 380 mile ultra virtual race right now! I am currently 166 miles in. It’s been going on since Thursday so I am averaging about 40 miles a day. I am hoping to be done this Saturday! This is my first ultra lol. I guess I jumped into the deep end. I hope you have a great day!

Reply

ALEX! THIS IS INCREDIBLE. 166 miles in and 40 miles a day! I am so impressed by you. PLEASE keep me updated with how it is going and I’m cheering for you.

Hi Janae! I did a virtual race about a month ago, you run by yourself and send them your time and pics. I think it’s great people are coming up with creative things during this time. I can’t decide if I want to sign up for more races just to support my favorite races though. Nothing beats the adrenaline rush of actual race day! Happy Monday!

Reply

I watched Gwen’s video to, from the way I understand it every 8 minutes running is a “Jerry mile “ So even if there having a hard week there worrying more about effort and time rather than actual mileage

Reply

Every little bit of distance goes into my mileage log. I ran those steps so it counts!!!

Malibu Nights, Conversations in the Dark, and I Loved Her First make me cry almost every single time I hear them.

Reply

Hello again! The virtual Indy Mini sounds so fun! I think your sister is awesome to decide to run 13.1 on a whim! And I always include the extra .XX in my mileage calculations. I’ve read before that rounding down makes you a better runner because you’re more prepared for races then you thought, but I just can’t make myself do it, lol. On easy days, I often stop my watch when I get to my house, but in hard days I always stop it right on the mile, because I earned it!

Best part of my weekend was visiting UTAH!! I stayed in Hurricane over the weekend and it was the most awesome experience. I hiked for 2 days straight and my legs are now shredded and very happy :) I loved everything about it and can’t wait to get back and hopefully run the St. George Marathon one day!! You have a beautiful, beautiful state!!
