TRUTH & Mom Guilt

My tank top spoke 100% truth yesterday.  The girls woke up 2 hours earlier than normal and when I made it to run time, I really needed it.  I remember when Brooke was a baby and I felt really guilty when I would leave for a run.  The longer I have been a mom (I mean almost EIGHT years now;) the more I feel zero/nada/zilch guilt in the slightest for taking time each day to do something for just me.  I realize more and more that without taking care of myself, taking care of little ones the rest of the day is so much harder.

So thank you Frozen 2 for allowing me time to move my body.

PS I really need to dust my treadmill.

PPS I feel like my head is going to hit the ceiling every time I run on the treadmill.

Fun running socks make me happy.  Any recommendations pretty please?

Skye told me that she wanted to do homework too but the below scene lasted a total of 24 seconds.

Another TJ’s prepared meal for me (I’m going to be really sad when I run out of these) with the most perfectly creamy avocado added on top.

Lately Skye has been waking up from her naps crying… not sure if she has been having nightmares or something lately!

We’ve been eating a lot of tacos around here lately.

The best part of the day was definitely hanging out with Andrew after work.   Those of you doing those 12+ hour shifts, you are incredible.  I don’t know how you do it!

One last thing to talk about… Alison Wade shared on her Fast Running Newsletter that Lindsay Devers ran a marathon on her own when she was supposed to run Boston.  It made my morning to see the course she chose on her Strava:)

A few random questions today….

Just wondering but when you go to blogs or my blog what way gets you there easiest?  Through Facebook, instagram, Twitter, bloglovin’, typing in the website?

Kelly asked (and I’m wondering too): “I am missing watching the major marathons.  I missed the reshowing of the past Bostons and am wondering if anyone knows where they’re available to watch?  I can only find highlights on YouTube.  I’d love to watch 2014 with Meb and 2018 with Des?  Anyone know if they’re available to rent online?

Do you choose your running route before you head out or as you go?

Whats the first thing you are going to go and do when things open up again??

Love, love, love that shirt! Yes, the guilt tends to fade with the realization that we can be our best selves when we honor what we need. When a friend told me about the “airplane advice” (put on your oxygen mask first, or you will be no help to others), it helped a lot.
I have your blog bookmarked, so I go straight to it as part of my morning routine :)
I’m mixed on running routes; sometimes I plan it carefully, if I’m set on a certain distance, and other times I just decide along the way. Yesterday, I wanted to feel fast, so I ended with a long downhill & loved it!

Reply

Oh I LOVE that advice and it really is so so true! It helps us to help others so much more. I feel so lucky that I get to be part of your morning routine, thank you Corey! Way to go on your run yesterday… you were cruising. I hope your Wednesday is a great one.

For all of the other blogs that I read, I don’t know there’s a new post until it pops up on Facebook. I used to do this with yours, but I realized there was a delay from the time you post it until it shows up in my feed. You’re such an important part of my mornings that I have your blog bookmarked on my browser. I sit down at my desk at work at 8am with my hot tea, breakfast, and your daily update and then I’m ready for my day!

Long term, I’m focusing all my post-COVID hopes and dreams on being able to go to the beach for vacation – we usually go in October when it’s cooler and less crowded, so maybe it’s still a go! Short term, I just want to go to Target and touch everything. Or be able to stop by the grocery store anytime I need something fast. It’s crazy how much things have changed so fast!

Reply

Oh when things start opening up I would love to get a pedi not done by me haha. But we will see.

I think I book marked your blog. Sometimes I get there through Instagram but not usually.

Make it up as I go! We have more fun that way:). Our neighborhood is super runner friendly. And soon we will have a new puppy joining us on our outings. She was born a few days ago and a little mini aussie doodle. We are so excited :)

I love that Skye wanted to do homework ?. And that she is wearing her princess dress!

Have a wonderful day Janae!

Reply

HEY Kristine!! Oh my feet are in major need of a pedi too! Thanks for letting me know and how fun that you plan as you go. I CANNOT wait for you to get your puppy and I want pictures. Thanks so much Kristine and I hope you have a great day!

Reply

Hey Tracy! I am SO thankful that I get to be a part of your morning, thank you. That really means a lot to me. I don’t know what I would do without this community. I cannot wait to hear about your beach vacation…. it’s going to be amazing! Maybe we will join you:). Oh and I am so with you on Target, this is the longest I’ve gone without it! I hope you have a beautiful day!

TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Ulta are probably the first things happening when everything opens up. i hate online shopping. I’ll probably hit up Target for their paper towels, too. Target brand select a size paper towels are my favorite. the cheap crap available at walmart doesn’t cut it.
i bookmarked your blog so that it’s easy to find.
I have having a thing for soft chicken tacos lately. It’s the best way to get guacamole into my belly.

have a great day!

where did you get your shirt? i need one!

Reply

HEY LEE! You really do need this tank… it is so great. https://sarahmariedesignstudio.com/products/mama-needs-a-run-racerback-tank

I cannot wait to shop at all of those stores too and I need to check out the Target paper towels! Hahaha tacos really are the best way to get guac and avocado into our bodies. Hope you have an amazing day!

Love your Mama Needs a Run shirt ! The chicken salad looks so good.
When things open up, I’m going to my favorite pizza place !! I may even go for a carry out pizza before it opens up. So so good. For a running route, I usually have a route in mind before I leave. Sometimes I will just wing it. But I usually have so much time or have to be back by a time it needs to be scheduled around.
I have all my blogs I read in Outlook RSS Feeds. So it’s a folder within my Outlook email and works just like it. So new posts show up bold, read ones are unbold. I love I don’t have to look at each one, at a quick glance I can see what has new posts.

You’ve GOT to take care of yourself and stay healthy to be a good mom! Plus kids love having time without parents around sometimes to play alone or watch shows or play with their siblings. Everybody wins! I think I have told you this before, but, my mom used to put us in the playroom at the YMCA while she swam laps and we had SO MUCH FUN THERE that we’d actually remind her to go swim because we wanted to go to the playroom.

I usually get to your blog through Feedly. Probably like 99% of the time.

The first thing I’m going to do once allowed is go to a POOL to swim. I’m so close to jumping in a 53F semi-legal river swimming spot 20 miles north of me haha.

Reply

I have your blog bookmarked for one click access :) It’s my first stop every morning!

I’m a casual runner and not training so I just wing it every time I go for a run. I take routes that allow me to go further or cut it short if I’m not feeling it.

First place I’m going is Target. Then my hair girl. Then the fam is going somewhere fun!

I use Feedly to organize all the blogs I read. I love it! I have tabs for Fitness (where I keep HRG!) and Parenting, etc., ones that relate to my work and Cooking. I probably read 10-15 blogs a day, and it wouldn’t be possible without having Feedly organize them for me in place.
P.S. I am very jealous of your Trader Joe’s purchases. We’ve been limiting our grocery store runs, and only going to Whole Foods. But I need some TJ’s hummus, chocolate covered ginger, and rosemary-raisin crackers in my life! And I LOVE their soaps!

Reply

I use Feedly for all of the blogs I follow. I can go to one site and see all of my favorites that have new posts on one screen. I can either read it in Feedly or click a link to go straight to your post. It’s super convenient, saves a ton of time and a little bit of memory space :)

I am so glad you don’t have guilt! Get out there and get your feel good chemicals going so you can bring your parenting “A” game!
I go to the website so much that it is a button suggested on my iPhone when I select the Safari app. It is you, Amazon and YouTube.
Never have I ever watched a marathon on tv. I am looking forward to a marathon watch party with the running group in Boise this fall, hopefully!
I always have my route chosen before heading out unless it is purely a social/get together run.
Socks, in general, make my life! I have particular ones I wear for long runs or races. Call it superstition, but it works! I tend to wear Feetures brand.
Have a wonderful day and enjoy that beautiful weather!

The first place I want to go is my favorite Mexican restaurant, for their vegetarian enchiladas and two strawberry margaritas, please!

Reply

I cannot wait for you to be able to go out for Mexican! You are going to enjoy every single bite. Hope you have a beautiful day, Allison!

Reply

I too have your blog bookmarked. I read it every morning at work before I start my day. It’s not the first thing I’ll do when things open up again, but I am most looking forward to going back to church. I’m the organist for my church, so I’ve been taping services with our pastor, which we then broadcast on YouTube Sunday mornings. It’s been a nice way to still feel sorta like we’re having church, but it is so so strange to be conducting a service with an empty sanctuary. Otherwise, I’m sure one of my family’s first stops will be either Texas Roadhouse, or our favorite local Mexican restaurant. I’m surprised how much we’ve missed eating out as a family. It’s our normal Friday night thing, and takeout just isn’t the same!

Reply

I just type in your blog into my browser! Been doing it for years and years now! :) I do sometimes see it pop up on my FB feed too!

I don’t typically choose my running route beforehand. I just go as I feel like it when I’m running. So that’s just one less thing I have to worry about to get me out the door for a run!

And the first thing I’m going to do when everything opens back up is go stroll around our outdoor mall! Also, I can’t wait to get to the beach too! It’s calling my name!

Have an amazing day, Janae!!

I just have your blog bookmarked!

I can’t wait to go to a coffee shop, and just sit and read and people watch! That was one of my favorite ways to recharge, and I really miss it. I usually plan my routes out mostly ahead of time, but sometimes I’ll take different side roads or different turns, depending on my mood.

I’ve been in a bit of a funk with running the last 2 weeks or so–just not feeling as great during it, but I always think about how you say the hard/bad workouts help prepare us for things to go well, and getting through it! So thank you for that!

Reply

I go to your website every lunchtime (in UK) so I only need to type “H” and my browser suggests the rest. Hit enter, and I am there! 1pm every day, without fail.

The first thing I am going to do once the lock-down eases is take my two year old to daycare and then skip the whole way home :) I can handle never eating in a restaurant again my whole life, but being home with her with nowhere to go and nothing to do is BONKERS. I honestly have such admiration for people without outside space, with more than one child, single parents etc. I have it easy, but this is a hard time.

Momming during quarantine is no joke. Extremely hard and I can relate strongly to needing a BREAK!!

I use Bloglovin! Never have any problems with your blog through that method.

What kind of tortillas are you using in your taco picture? They look so nice and sturdy and thick, mine always get soggy.

I emailed you on your hungry runner girl gmail!!

Hey you!! Those are the corn tortillas from TJ’s… they really are so sturdy and we just warm them up on the stove before we heat them off! Off to check my emails wahoo, thanks again friend!

If you find the marathons I would love to know where! I found 2016 and 2020 olympic trials on YouTube but thats it :( I was on a hunt for boston 2018 a few weeks ago so i was so excited when it re-aired!

I love the boston strong spelled wrong lol. I will generally have an idea in my head but not always 100% of the route planned.

I have your web page bookmarked. Same with a couple of other blogs I read.

Kelly – have you checked the On Demand listings for the Olympic Channel? What provider do you have? I will check Xfinity on demand later when I get home to see if they list the marathons.

I always have my routes planned before I start my run.

Washington is opening the State Parks 5/4 so I will get over to Saint Edward State Park for a trail run/hike ASAP. And assuming Edmonds, WA open their parks on 5/4 – we can go back to our Sunday morning ritual of drinking coffee down by the dog beach/park.

Thank you for bookmarking me John, that means a lot! And THANK YOU for also sharing about nbc sports, I’m going to sign up and enjoy some events before it ends! So happy you are going to be back to your normal Sunday mornings soon. Enjoy!

* I get to the blog via the website
* LOVE that shirt — where did you get it?
* Funny, my daughter (who’s just a few weeks older than Skye) recently had a little stretch where she would wake up crying. Lasted I think a few days? Maybe it’s an age thing.

Okay, that is so interesting! It must be an age thing. I’m glad to hear it was short lived for your daughter and hopefully the same for Skye! Here is the link… it’s the best! I hope you have a beautiful day and thank you so much for reading!

I read your blog through an app called Feedly. I’ve used it for years and I just check it every day for you and the one other blog I read. Remember when we used to read like 737 blogs a day? I don’t follow anyone else anymore but you and NieNie. Sometimes if I forget to check I’ll swipe up when I see it linked in your IG stories!
Also I was happy to see Beretta in the back of one of your photos. I haven’t heard you talk about her for a while and I was wondering how she’s doing! (Which I know is very weird but I’m apparently a dog person now ?)

Reply

HEY MINDY!! Oh I totally remember those days… I had so many blogs I read each day! I feel very honored that you still follow me after all of these years:). Thank you so much for thinking of me! I need to get more Beretta pictures… she is living the dream having us home all day and going on so many more walks etc haha. Thanks for caring about our entire family! I hope you have a really great day:)

Reply

Bloglovin for me! I read a few and it helps me to just have a new post show up in my feed, and to not have to check each one individually. I can’t remember everyone’s posting schedule so I like having it just pop up in a feed for me.

I can’t decide what I want to do most, but I think overall, I didn’t use to stress when being out and about, like how far away am I from everyone? Are they walking this way, oh I need to move, oh wait are they moving, oh no I’ll move this way…all of the mental gymnastics are exhausting, and I know that part will be around for a long time to come, but that’s the thing that I’m excited to move on from, when it’s safe to do so!

Reply

Ok… I am going to have to check out Feedly!
For your blog I go through Facebook. It pops up every morning a little after 6am (CA time). For the other blogs I read, they come into my email because I subscribe to them. I really should do that for you (not sure why I haven’t), because I believe that helps the “business” side for you.
Definitely keep doing something for yourself each day! It is so important. And I love the tank top!
“Where the bee broke my neck”… Oh that is hilarious and adorable! My youngest went through quite the band-aid stage when he was Skye’s age too. So funny.
The first thing I am going to do when all of this is over, is hug all my friends and family! Then I want to go to the beach, have dinner at our favorite restaurant, and just be happy!
Hope your Wednesday is a good one!

Reply

I go to your blog every day by just typing in the website name.

The first thing I’m going to do once restrictions are over is lay on the grass in a park and read a book (we’re not allowed to “not be moving” in any parks where I live). The second thing is to eat out!! I SO miss going to restaurants and eating food made by others.

Reply

Thanks so much for hanging out with me every day! Oh that is interesting that you can’t do that right now and I really hope you get to read at your favorite park soon! That first visit back to a restaurant is going to feel so good. Have a great day, Joy!

Random treadmill question…when you were living in an apartment and had a treadmill, do you run into any issues like angry neighbors? I live on the 3rd floor (top floor) and am thinking about getting a treadmill to use on my balcony…

Reply

Hey!! When I had mine on the patio I never had a complaint (from neighbors or management)! I also ran on it at times that most people were probably at work (like 9 or 10)! I’m not sure what neighbors would have thought if I used it early or late! But when I did ask my neighbors once they said they never heard it! I really hope this works out for you and find a great cover to protect it during hot days or cold days. Keep me updated. Thanks Leslie!

Reply

I just type in your website in a new tab and it pops up! I don’t use any social media so this is the easiest/makes the most sense for me. In response to Kelly, I honestly don’t know about recorded races but the Boston Athletic Association might be useful to contact about that, or there could be info on their website.

I do have one random/unrelated question. There is a possibility I’ll be going to SLC, Utah for a job, and I’m wondering how bad inversion gets year round. For example, is there a typical number of days you can’t go outside to run? Or do you have any advice/thoughts on how it impacts life there? Thank you!!

Reply

Thanks, Kel, for your suggestion to contact the BAA!

Reply

Hey Kel! Great question and I really hope that you’ll be coming here:) I can’t speak for the SLC inversion because I know it does get worse there than here (I’m in Utah County) but there are probably 5-10 days a winter that I’ll choose the treadmill over running outside because of the air quality. I hope the mountains make that worth it to you! I feel like the rest of the year the air is fabulous outside of the few times during the year that it gets bad. Keep me updated on your decision! Let me know if you have any other questions!

My 18 month old son has been waking up from his naps crying too!! He never used to do this until a couple of weeks ago. He does not wake up crying in the morning, just at nap. I have no idea why so if you figure out the answer please let me know!

I usually have an idea of the route I’m taking on my run but sometimes I will switch things up once I get going.

I’m worried that when things start to open up again I’ll still be scared of going anywhere. This whole pandemic has really thrown me off. I would love to be able to take a road trip to a large body of water that has a beach!

Reply

Okay, that is so weird! I am sorry you are experiencing this too. It’s so weird because she used to wake up in the best moods after her naps. Let me know if you find the answer too! Okay, a road trip to the ocean sounds amazing. I think it is going to feel like how it feels returning to running after an injury. SO cautious and paying attention to every little details of how we are feeling etc. I hope you have a beautiful day and that your son wakes up happy today. Thanks Torrie!

I type in your site or use bloglovin’. That avocado looks so good. I had a perfect one yesterday morning for toast for my breakfast.

I mostly read your blog through typing it in the browser. Occasionally I’ll go through Instagram, but usually by the time I’m on instagram, I’ve already read your post.
I’ve never watched a whole marathon on TV, but I’ve seen bits and pieces of it. I do miss having sports on, especially since hockey was about to start playoffs and my Blues were first in the Western Conference, but as it stands they are the current Stanley Cup Champions, so that’s not bad either.
If I’m trying to hit a certain number of miles, I’ll map it out. I tend to run the same routes in places I know. If I’m running to tour a place, I’ll look up how to get there and then make it up as I go.
I’m not sure the first place I’ll go… but I”m ready for it to be normal-ish!

I will probably get a mani/pedi first. Also, hair salon and lash studio are high on the list, and a massage would be great. Really, I just want to race again, so I cannot wait for that to be an option!
I love my Steigen socks (especially the camo and floral prints), but they do not have enough fun options!

INSPIRATION, NOT PERSPIRATION…. Reading a book and I’m humming along and I get to Contribution. The books says unlike other human drives, contribution brings up a lot of guilt. I thought of a few things/ occupations, and one was Moms/ Motherhood.

So, this book has 10 human drives, and contribution is one, uno, 1 of them. (Oh, HRG, kudos for specifically mentioning you did not feel guilt today/ yesterday for the run + Frozen 2! You could have high levels of confidence in what follows here.) Imagine if Moms got a lock on contribution and felt a lot less guilt? — pause — I’m actually in the contribution chapter now, so I didn’t read it all, yet. Here’s the message I came down here to type –> being

. authentic,
. caring people; and
. living your truth,
. being your best, and
. fully expressing your strengths, talents and abilities

at whatever you do are sufficient to CONTRIBUTE. That’s all, five bullets. When the guilt comes along come back to these bullets (or have them in your journal/ calendar), evaluate, adjust, perform, reevaluate, give yourself credit, and feel better. FEEL BETTER when you EARN CREDIT.

Is it weird that I don’t really miss anything during this time?!? I’m off work and couldn’t be happier for the break from everything. Although I was just thinking today that I’m grateful I don’t have kids yet during this time and can really focus on myself and my own growth. I’m glad you don’t feel guilty anymore!!! I hope to learn that from you. I guess the main thing I do miss is my people. Seeing my parents, and my new month old nephew that I can’t yet meet!!! Plus friends. Other than that, quarantine life is the life for me ahaha

Question for Andrew.. I’m an ICU nurse as well. What precautions does he take to help prevent bringing home covid to his home and family. I just went back to work from maternity leave. A much different world from where I left it in January! My little one is 14 weeks and it’s so scary to think about bringing home all those germs!

Reply

Hey Katie! That is a very tough situation (and congrats on your new little one). Hoping and praying the absolute best for you and your family and thank you for what you do! So Andrew’s normal floor is now the ‘clean’ floor so he isn’t actually around it most shifts. When he is asked to go onto the covid floor then he wears all of the gear etc and then when he comes home he strips down outside (luckily our neighbors can’t see ha) and takes a shower in our guest bathroom. He handles any laundry from those shifts. Utah is really low in numbers compared to everywhere else so that definitely helps too. Please keep me updated with how you are doing and I’m thinking about you!

I type in your blog address to get here. Sometimes I click from insta if I haven’t visited yet and you’ve posted a link.

On another note, Skye reminds me so much of my own daughter (she’s 3 now). She also used to say “I hold you,” which melted my heart. She still wears a princess dress everyday with a strong preference for Elsa.

I take 30-45 minutes each day to exercise. I do it while my 4 month old is sleeping and either put on a show or let my 3 yo daughter wander around me. Today she went into the office to grab a rubber band to mimic my resistance band ? Pre-covid19 I would rely on gym daycare but I’m happy to talk to my toddler about the time I take to exercise and why it’s good for us all. I do feel bad when she says “are you done with your exercise yet?” 2.5 mins in, but I have to set the boundary during these times for my own sanity and ability to parent/caretake.
