Raceless Me + Friday Favorites!

Normal me with a race on my calendar:  Rain, snow, wind or fog… I’ll get out there for my run.  I won’t be able to choose the weather on race day so I better get out there and practice running in bad weather now because it’s going to make me stronger.

Raceless me:  Yeah, it’s raining/snowing hard and I’m just going to stay inside for as long as I need to avoid any weather that is even somewhat annoying;)

Instead of heading out, I did a strength workout (below in my favorite things) and started the kids with school.  Once it was a bit warmer and no longer snowing I did a few miles and felt my fingertips the entire time;)

Just a normal day for us at home.  School, animals & bikes.

And then we decided to have a really good dinner.  We had Sally’s Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits, corn on the cob and steak!

Skye was in a really good mood all day yesterday;)

Followed by funfetti cake (remember how our wedding cake was funfetti?) for dessert!

I have just a few favorite things to talk about today!

*It’s Birkenstock season!  Every spring of my life I start having feet problems with my running until I realize that it’s because I’m wearing unsupportive sandals and switch over to Birkenstocks.  I love them.  They make my feet happy so I can keep running and they are cute.  I found a bunch of them on sale here and I just got a new pair for this year.

IMG 1273

*Baseball is Back: Some Good News with John Krasinski.  It was Andrew’s favorite episode.  If you are a healthcare worker and use AT&T you need to watch the end:)

*It’s Megan’s WEDDING DAY TODAY so go spread some love to her and also, I’m LOVING her IG Live workouts.  They are so easy to do from home and it almost feels like I am getting to hang out with her when I do them.  I did her latest full body circuit yesterday and it’s a winner… I’ll be sore until next week.  They are all on her IG page.

IMG 1385

*I’m SO grateful to my favorite podcasters for continuing to share awesome episodes during this time. Podcasts are helping me feel like I am socializing with people and this one was an amazing episode.

IMG 1380

*For those of you that listened to the ‘Dirty John’ podcast, Andrew and I watched it on Netflix too.  It had been a few years since I had listened to the story and I had forgotten how crazy the whole thing was.  The last episode I closed my eyes (you’ll know when… it was graphic) but the rest was really intense if you like those sorts of things that are also true stories.

*Do you have a favorite SPF for your face?  I’d love to hear what you use.  I’ve been using Kiehl’s every morning before my run and then again after my shower and I really really love it, I just want to find something a little cheaper.

IMG 1379 2

*As you know, Madewell t-shirts are my favorite ever and I ordered this new color last week (shopping therapy;) and I just love it so much.  + EVERYTHING IS 40% OFF TODAY (which makes my t-shirt $12)!

IMG 1394

*My friend Maddie sent me a video message the other day just when I needed it and it made me cry.  It’s amazing how much these acts of reaching out mean right now.  I miss PEOPLE!

My dermatologist friend recommended EltaMD tinted moisturizer with SPF which I love. It’s sooo lightweight. She also loves Coola for additional coverage but it’s a bit thicker. I’ll alternate between the two depending on what my day entails.

Reply

Oh I LOVE the EltaMD tinted but I had forgotten about it, thank you so much! I hope you have a beautiful weekend!

Reply

My skin loves Elta! Wish it was a bit cheaper, but you don’t use much. Always buy when Dermstore has a sale.

The days are all kind of running together at this point for me. I crave some kind of normalcy. Your blog is something I look forward to every day. This sounds pathetic but the best part of my week has been my breakfast of homemade biscuits and gravy. I’m all about the food these days! I hope your Friday is good Janae!

Reply

Well, you just made my morning. Thank you for reading every day and for being my friend! I’ll definitely try to keep the normalcy coming. I don’t think that is pathetic, food is everything right now. I hope you have something really delicious today. Thanks Kimberly, you too!

Oh my gosh, I did the same thing with my run this morning! It was below freezing and could not pull myself out of the warm bed to put on multiple layers and gloves and earband. Lunch time running for me today (when it will be mid 50s).

I like Neutrogena SPF – it is very light and do not feel like my skin is suffocating underneath, especially when running.

Most days just feel the same anymore, though it is nice on the weekends to not have to log into work. Honestly though, I do not mind everyday being much the same – what I am really missing is being able to travel. We still have a trip for late May/early June planned and I am going to hang onto hope until the very last minute.

Happy Friday!

Reply

I’m not alone… enjoy the lunch time running and sunshine today! Mid 50s is perfection. I will have to grab that one, I hate the feeling of suffocating faces while I run. Oh Janelle, I really really hope that trip happens too! Keep me updated and happy Friday to you!

I started using Coola sunsilk drops about a year ago and I’m obsessed! UVB and blue light blocking and it’s literally like silk. BUT, it’s super expensive. haha. A bottle lasts forever though. We made biscuits last night too! My kids call them “Baskets.” We had potato soup, baskets and FoodStirs chocolate chip cookie’s…have you tried foodstirs?? It’s such a good mix. I usually try and make everything from scratch, but I like to keep a couple boxes of their cookies and brownies on hand in case I need a quick dessert. Which, is like, every night these days.

Reply

Blue light blocking too and it feels like silk… that should be expensive ha. Going to check that out because I need that with all of the time I am at the computer. Baskets haha I love it. I have never tried foodstirs but now I need to right now. That sounds absolutely amazing. Hope you have a great day Mollie!

I also love the Neutrogena Clear Face sunscreen. It ‘rubs in’ easily, doesn’t make me breakout, and is cheap and available everywhere!

Reply

So good to hear! Thank you! Going to grab some online from Target. Have a beautiful weekend:)

Brene Brown just released a new podcast, Unlocking Us! Listening to the first episode now and loving it. The weekends feel a little different in that I sleep in later than during the week. I do like having a 7 or 8 am alarm instead of 4:30 (if running) or 5:45! But honestly, I’ve been waking up before my alarm every day too. Maybe it’s like you said the other day, it’s our bodies way of having some control!

Reply

Ahhhh isn’t it just the best? I am so glad you are loving it… I want her to release a new one every day:). Good to know I’m not alone with my body needing normalcy/control and waking up at the same time daily. I hope you get to sleep in tomorrow though! Have a great Friday Mariah!

For any situation in which I’ll be sweaty (running, working out, hiking, or even just walking outside when it’s really hot) I swear by Neutrogena Sport Face. It feels like ‘real’ sunblock, so you wouldn’t want to wear it as a daily thing, but it’s great when you need sunblock that won’t run into your eyes, which all the others that I’ve tried have done, even the other Neutrogena varieties.

Reply

So good to hear, a lot of you are loving Neutrogena so I definitely will try it. THANK YOU.. it sounds perfect and so much cheaper than the one I was using! Have a great weekend Emily!

Reply

I recently tried drunk elephant umbra sheer and I hated it! Sad cause it had really good reviews, but I found it really greasy and not moisturizing enough for me face. Interested to hear others recommendations since I don’t have any brilliant ones!

Podcast – this is love – it’s a fun, cute, light storytelling style podcast about happy (true) things!

Our chickens are 4 days old and thriving!! Soooo cute and funny. Names: sprinkle donut, chickaletta, peach, mango and Mandy!

Reply

Thanks so much for sharing the kind you don’t like so I don’t try it. FOUR DAYS OLD! I am so happy and just read their names to my kids and they LOVE THEM! Keep enjoying them. Okay, I cannot wait to try out that podcast… It sounds perfect. Have a beautiful weekend Andrea!

I use/love Alba Botanica Emollient Pure Lavender Sunscreen Lotion – SPF 45 – 4oz. Right now it is $8.00 at Target (I first found it at Whole Foods, now it is everywhere). I use it for my face and also for my son on the go (it is gentle and such a nice size I keep one in my backpack).

The best part of my week was getting my grapevines planted! I moved an unused trellis from another part of the yard and now this is a focal point by the front path. One vine is muscadine for eating, and one is a Spanish variety for wine or jellies!

I listen to way too many NPR and politics podcasts, and “Wait Wait Dont Tell Me,” is my son’s current fave, but mine is “Work Play Love,” with Lauren Fleshman and Jesse Thomas. It is like listening into their weekly date night/day and they are so REAL! I always crack up at least twice during the show.

The weekend is different because my husband is taking Saturdays off now (the Guard is managing the testing for the state and he is in charge of logistics), so on Saturdays I scamper out of bed as soon as I wake up and run downstairs and put the door for a solo run as fast as my legs will carry me! It’s only been the last few weeks so I did 5, then 6, then 7 miles. I kind of want to just keep adding a mile every Saturday, but sometimes I feel guilty about being gone while he’s off. But it is my only time alone!!!!!! I really appreciate solo runs way more now than I used to.

I love your new Birks! Now I need to decide on a pair…

Reply

$8… um yes, PLEASE! Sounds perfect. Thanks Tonya. Brooke just asked me if we can plant grapevines in our yard… we will have to learn from you! So happy yours are planted. I totally forgot about ‘Work Play Love,’ thank you for reminding me! I think you REALLY need those alone miles at this time so I say… keep adding a mile each weekend. I love that. I hope you love your new Birks, they are just the best. Have a great Saturday with your son and husband!

I use a skinceuticals tinted face sunscreen–it’s on the pricier side, but my bottle has lasted over a year! I also have really sensitive skin, and it’s one of the few that doesn’t irritate me. And it’s got good SPF!

Best part of my week: I had a REALLY good run yesterday that just made my day. I’m thinking seriously about doing a marathon, so I’m trying to push myself and see what I can do right now. The lack of pressure with everything shut down is helping me find joy in running!

I just listened to Ali’s episode with Theordora Blanchfield (it’s a little bit of an older one), and it was so good! So inspiring and a good reminder to be grateful for the people in my life.

Have a GREAT Friday!

Reply

OVER A YEAR… okay, that makes it worth the extra $ for me! SO happy that you had such a great run yesterday and you know I fully support you with the marathon plan. I totally see what you are saying about the lack of pressure… we are truly getting out there because we love it and for no other reason. How have I not listened to that one yet, I love them both. Off to check it out. Thanks Kristin and let me know what you decide about the marathon! Have a great day Kristin.

Reply

I love Ali on The Run Podcast or I’ll Have Another Podcast. I use Cetaphil SPF50. Recommended by dermatologist and it fits my budget. I have not used others so I don’t have comparison. The best part of my week is having my team member released from the hospital due to COVID (I’m a nurse)

Reply

I am SO SO HAPPY! Thank you for sharing that with me and thank you so much for all that you are doing to help everyone at the hospital. You are amazing and I am so happy they were sent home:). Have the best weekend Amanda and I love Cetaphil products, I will have to check them out! Thanks!

Trader Joe’s has a lightweight face moisturizer with spf I’ve been using it for years I love it!
All the days feel the same….
Have a great day!

I’ve seen their moisturizer/spf so many times and I’ve always wondered. I’m definitely going to grab some when I go there next. Thanks so much Mary and you too!

I actually prefer weekdays at this point because my kids and husband (he’s a teacher) all have online school- I like it when they have something to keep them busy : )
For some weird reason I had this thought while I was reading your blog today- what if this pandemic had occured during that time you were a single mom, living alone with Brooke- CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE??? Your home life seems so rich and full now with Andrew, the kids, the animals… the hot tub : ) If you have to stay home, now is the time to do it! Have a great day!

Reply

I definitely agree with you, the school schedules help us to feel normalcy around here too. Thank you for thinking about me and I was texting with my mom about that a few weeks ago. I feel very lucky right now! Thank you so much Jenny, I hope you have a beautiful Friday!

Love skinceuticals tinted sunscreen. It’s a little more money, but lasts forever. Very light and looks like a nice foundation.

Reply

Looks like a nice foundation… ummm yes please. Checking it out now, thank you so much Tracy! Happy Friday!

Reply

I love this sunscreen! It absorbs well, is non-greasy, doesn’t leave a white cast, and also wears well with makeup over top. Plus it’s SPF 50 and only $9!

I haven’t had a chance to try the kiehl’s sunscreen yet. I have tried banana boat, aveeno and usually whatever is on sale haha.

Yes the days are blurring together but the best part of the week is that today is the end of the work week ha. Getting outside everydayhas definitely been a highlight..

I totally hear you on the online shoppin…we currently have 2 lb of reese’s pieces in the house and 2 lb of jelly bellies gulp ?

And the raceless you I can totally identify! Have a great day Janae and happy wedding day yo your frierd!

Reply

2 lb of Reese’s Pieces and 2 lb of Jelly Bellies… that makes me VERY happy! Super excited for you to get some time outside in the sunlight and I hope you have a great weekend without work! Thanks Kristine!

Reply

The weekend only feels different because we don’t have to worry/stress about getting the kids school work done. Otherwise it feels the same.

4 good parts of the week: 1.) on-line stores have been having amazing sales so we are buying our winter gear for next year and clothes for the summer and next fall. 2.) my 4th grader is finally getting in the groove of on-line learning. 3.) wonderful week of running! 4) my 4 year old is starting to read and is so proud of himself:-).

Happy Friday Janae!!!

Reply

Hahaha sounds like our weekends are very similar… that is the only difference with ours now. Good to know about the online sales for winter gear… we need some things. I am SO happy about the great things that happened your week, just reading it gave me the biggest smile! Happy Friday to you too!

Reply

I like cetaphils acne/non greasy 30 SPF and I just started with Andalou Naturals SPF 18. The SPF is lower which is fine right now but I’ll need to reapply more often in the summer. It’s all natural ingredients and the citrus smell is so great!!!

But we’ve been the same way about running. We keep going to bed late and running later because…what’s the point?!?!

Reply

You are so right… what’s the point?! Usually we all have things to get back to and now it’s like why not just get out when we want to. Citrus… that sounds heavenly! Off to find it, thank you so much Chelsea and I hope you have the best day!

Reply

I love Coola Matte Tint. It’s not much of a tint- just barely any- but it does really make you less shiny. It’s mineral so it doesn’t sting my eyes when I sweat outside. I go through tubes of that stuff!

Reply

THAT SOUNDS AMAZING!! Thanks for sharing Laura, I need that right now. Have a fantastic weekend!

Reply

Hi Janae! Happy Friday! Feels like it is finally here! I am sooo ready for the weekend, every day this week since Tuesday has felt like Friday. I love Biore sunscreens (I get from Amazon) since they don’t feel like in wearing anything.

Reply

my fav spf is Rilastil (italian pharmacy brand so Idk if you can find it in US) and Biorè (easily found on amazon), I’d like to try also Neutrogena and REN but I’m very happy with the two I mentioned and they’re not expensive at all!

Reply

I love Blue Lizard face for running! It never runs, doesn’t have a strong smell, reef safe, etc.

Reply

I use Olay Total Effects with SPF 30 daily on my face and really like it. I have fair skin so I’ve always used something.

Best part about my week – Lemon Monkey Bread Minis!!
https://mcmomentsandmemories.blogspot.com/2020/04/friday-foodie_17.html

I was just thinking about how I’m going on longer bike rides during the week now. With so little traffic I don’t mind being out on the roads. That means I don’t necessarily go long on the weekends. I’m planning a longer run on Sunday because I’m not on the team that’s doing our live stream at church. That’s the one thing that feels strange – staying home from church on Sundays.

Reply

I think I use a 30 on my face every day. I just use the Target brand and it’s nice and light under my makeup as well.

The best part of the week was our amazing weather, although it is raining today. I’m also helping to deliver some yard signs to our seniors that ran cross country for us so that will be fun :)

I’m currently listening to The Dating Show Killer. I’m only on episode 2 but it’s interesting so far.

The weekend feels much different to me. The kids don’t have school work and I let them sleep in. I don’t have work on the weekend either. And the hubs and I go on a nice, long walk Sunday morning and have coffee before the kids get up. Then we watch church as a family and make a yummy dinner together.

Reply

I love supergoop unseen sunscreen, especially if you’re going to wear makeup (it has almost a primer finish). Also love laroche posay anthelios sunscreen.

Reply

Hi Janae,

I don’t know how much control you have over individual ads that show up on your blog, but there was an add for Vuse (vaping) that showed up today. I was really surprised to see that, and thought maybe you wouldn’t be too happy about it.

I love your chick pictures. We’ve had our chickens for two years now and they are still great, but I miss that cute little fuzzball stage!

Getting out for a run without the motivation of a race is very very difficult and it’s always so hard to get moving again after a Wisconsin winter (for me, at least). I’ve only been able to get myself up and going for 2 milers at most recently. I tried motivating myself by wearing my running clothes for my entire workday so it would be easier to just head out the door. Nope! 9pm came around and I still hadn’t run. I set a timer tonight for right at the end of my workday. Wish me luck!!

I used to be a morning runner but that has become not possible thanks to my little one…he doesn’t wake up early enough to put him in the jogger and he doesn’t wake up late enough to squeeze it in beforehand.

Hi!
Sunscreen-obsessed over here, I’ve spent years looking for my favourite ones.
I use and love the La Roche Posay Shaka Ultra-Light SPF 50+. I’m not sure if it’s available in the US or if it has the same name. It goes on like a dream and is highly resistant to sweat, sand, water, etc. It’s usually on sale in my country so typically costs €15 for 50ml. It’s a very light fluid so a little goes a long way.
If you’re looking for something super cheap, and can find it online or from a friend who lives there (what I do when I’m being cheeky ha), the own-brand SPF facial sunscreen from the Australian supermarket Coles is fantastic and crazy cheap.

Reply

I hear you on the podcasts. I want to listen to that one, have it downloaded! I’m listening to the most recent “Work, Play, Love” episode now with Lauren Fleshman and Jesse Thomas. I’ve also been listening to the “Up and Running” podcast a bit more (with Lauren Floris, it’s part of Lindsey Hein’s productions) and the “Start Today Morning Show” is pretty light-hearted and fun during this time (Rachel and Dave Hollis)

Reply

I use COOLA and have been for the past six years…. just don’t know if it’s actually doing its job or not with this HI sun but I love it. I use the SPF50 white tea one.
I used to use the Shiseido’s sunscreen line, but I am loving the fact that COOLA is organic.

Reply

I have been using Supergoop Unseen sunscreen and a little goes a long way. It can go under make up as well.

So I really struggled to find an spf that me and my face likes. I’ve now been using this for three months and can honestly say I LOVE it. It’s Fre Protect Me. https://www.freskincare.com/collections/all-products/products/protect-me

Also an instagrammer I follow recommended these $24 birkentstock dupes from Amazon and so far I’m loving them and so are my feet. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075P7YWFH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have a new Korean face sunscreen that I am LOVING this year. Etude House Sunprise Mild and Airy finish. I bought it on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WE3XGAC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
