That was good timing!

Well, this made my day.

I started my morning off with 8.3 miles @ 8:02 pace and then when I got home Brooke told me she wants to train for a 5k and that she wanted to go for a run with me.

Ummm yes.

We got her new shoes for cross-country to start soon (if it doesn’t happen this year, I will coach next year still and maybe put together a fall program too) so we were all ready to get out there and run together.

She used Andrew’s watch which she was pretty excited about!

HER STRIDE.

IMG 9294

We did a total of 1.6 miles of running/walking together and I’m happy we have another activity to do together during this time.

IMG 9298

Andrew (was put on call yesterday… which was strange bc we’ve been thinking he would be busier than ever) went to the school to pick up Brooke and Knox’s schoolwork for the next few weeks.  It gave me goosebumps to see how much time and effort their teachers have spent putting together everything for each and every student to help them through this time.  They also sent a separate stack full of art projects they can work on too.

IMG 9330

After we worked on school for a bit we went on a walk.  Brooke is VERY cautious about avoiding stepping on cracks (step on a crack and break your mother’s back thing…) but Andrew will make her every now and then ha.

IMG 9318

Costco inspired lunch of their bagged salad and croissant rolls with their chicken salad and grapes in the middle.

IMG 9325

Dinner was takeout from Good Thyme!  Our neighbor owns this restaurant and brought it over.  Their food is amazing… they (along with La Jolla Groves) are still doing take-out and have freezer meals you can order if you are in the area! 801-224-5111

IMG 9347

I’m LOVING all of the ideas out there about fun things to do during this time at home so I thought I’d share two fun food ones that we just did—> We did Fondue night on Monday night and it was a blast.  The girls loved it!

IMG 9223

And meals in a cupcake tin seem to take it to the next level for them.

IMG 9322

I had to laugh at what my brother (he and his wife have 7 kids) wrote on Facebook the other day…

IMG 9227

We bought a hot tub and it’s all ready to be used now!  When Andrew and I first moved here we made a goal to set aside money each month to buy a hot tub for our backyard.  We reached our goal last month, picked it all out and then it took them a few weeks to make it and it was just delivered a few days ago.  The kids are thrilled.  We’ll keep it at a lower temperature for them and warm it up for when it’s just Andrew and me but now that we are staying home… the hot tub came in really good timing.

I can guarantee we will be in this at least 3 times a day from here on out.

A big reason we wanted to get this besides for our kids was for us to have another fun thing to do together when the kids go to bed and we can’t go anywhere.  It’s easy for us to just fall into the trap of going to bed really early or watching a movie but felt like a hot tub would be so fun for us to relax, talk and hang out once they go to bed too.  It is safe too because it has a locking lid!

This will be great for when training gets hard again too:)

——————————————————————————————————-

Those of you that were training for a specific race and it’s been canceled… What are you doing in terms of training?  Still following the plan or easing off and running what sounds fun each day?

Fill me in with any fun activities that you are doing at home if you have kids?

Anyone else have a hot tub or what about a pool?

How are you getting in movement today?!

PS Just feeling really grateful that we are all able to still connect online with each other.  This quarantine has made me really realize how much I love people and I’m so thankful we still get to talk.

I have a half that is scheduled for may 30 so I’m hopeful it will still take place. Who knows? I have a treadmill at home so I’m continuing with my training for now. It helps to have an outlet after being home all day with the kids. We are going to a park to go for a walk later. Hopefully that is ok. We are getting a little stir crazy. Have a great day!

I am SO glad you are able to continue your training at home right now. It really is so helpful to start the day off with movement before the craziness happens for the rest of the day. Thanks Karen, you too!

I don’t have kids, but passing along to my nieces and friends with kids! Virtual tours online of zoos, Great Wall of China, Mars, museums, etc. Thought it would be fun for kids! https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2020/03/16/social-distancing-free-virtual-tours/5060244002/

Also, all the gyms and activewear companies posting free workouts on Instagram are helping me get in movement during this time!! Check out AArmy, they do Instagram Live workouts multiple times a day. Lululemon is doing yoga. Liz Moody has a 3 PM dance party (loved that yesterday!)

Reply

OH MY GOODNESS THANK YOU! My kids are going to love this! Thanks for letting me know about the IG accounts posting awesome stuff, going to check it out! We are going to love the dance party:)

Awwww enjoy the hot tub!!! How fun that Brooke wanted to go run with you. We went for a walk last night (a little over a mile). Tonight I am going to have to wear my running shoes because my youngest 2 ran almost the entire way and I was holding them back.

Not that this necessarily fun but we have been checking out new learning websites. There are so many that are offering their site for free. My kids love trying out the new learning resources and they are learning in the process. We typically limit screen time, even for learning activities, but most “rules” are going out the window because what we “typically” do isn’t reality right now. I always have the summer home with the kids, but I was not mentally prepared to be home with them all this soon and trying to teach them as well.

Lifting weights, walks, playground and a short run today–we need the fresh air even though it is still a little cold and muddy out. I was following a training plan, but I am loosening up a little bit and doing whatever sounds good.

Enjoy your day Janae! Did you make cookies yesterday?

It’s a new reality and we never expected the college kids to be home so early, but it has been amazing to spend time together. My high schooler started her online learning yesterday…and for tennis she is supposed to get in some cardio,so it was a great excuse for her and her older sister to get out and run with me :-) My college kiddos start online next week. My husband has been working from home, so we’ve all been here together which has been nice. With the older kids away at college, and my husband traveling a lot it has mostly just been me and my youngest daughter this year, so it’s actually been really nice to be back to cooking big dinners and sitting around the table together. So we’ve just been enjoying the time together and getting outside for lots of walks and runs. Thankfully it has been very warm in Texas so we have that option. And thankfully the kids seem to be understanding the need for social distancing. They would rather be hanging out with all their friends who are unexpectedly home too, but so far haven’t griped much about being at home :-)

I’m so jealous of your new hot tub! We’ve thought about getting one too especially the older we get. It would feel amazing on these sore muscles!

I am so glad you are getting in all of the family time and that you could have your girls with you for your run today! Keep enjoying this time and the meals together. It’s so good for the soul. Hahah Knox is with your kids… he is missing his social life! I hope you guys get a hot tub soon. Thanks Louisa!

Hey Becky, good idea to wear your running shoes tonight haha. Seriously so grateful for all of the online learning activities available for our kids for free right now! Sounds like a wonderful day and we never ended up making them but hoping to tomorrow now! Somehow the days are filling up faster than I thought. Hope you are having a great day!

Hi Janae !
It is so nice to read your posts every days as we are confined at home.
Here, in France, we can only go out with an attestation (only to buy food, or essential work..) and we are controled by the police. (Which is a good thing).
Fortunately we have a garden :)
I try to have a positive view of the situation. It seems like the whole world (at least my whole country) is on “pause”.
Every superficial things are not a priority anymore. (Our supermarkets have supply difficulties these days. And my only worry is to find food (i’m not stressed because i have some stocks for the moment) but i think this is a “good” test for us to remember what is important in life. Taking care of others, love.
We also can see the first effects on the nature (less pollution, dolphins coming back in calm harbors where boats are atopped), and we might take a lesson for the future.
Nice to see Brooke running with you !
As i had to stop running, i’m doing yoga, indoor bike to go on moving.
Take care of yourself and courage to Andrew for his great job ! (Hope he and his team have masks and equipments. Here, medical workers don’t have enough)

Love your update from France. You have such a great attitude!

Reply

Yes, I appreciate it, too, and admire your positive attitude, too, Ingrid. It all takes a mental strength to have to stay indoors. I’m impressed how well you’re handling it, too, and hope to be as positive if we all end up quarantined, too!

Reply

Ingrid, I am thinking about you a lot. I am so glad you have that garden and enough supplies right now but please keep me updated. What you are going through is very hard. We had an earthquake in Utah today and between that and the virus I have been feeling what you talked about a lot… it really puts things into perspectives. Keep enjoying yoga and your indoor bike. I’m thinking about you. Keep me updated with it all. xoxoxo

My marathon was cancelled and I’m just doing what sounds good each day. Planning to start training for some shorter faster races in May. Fall is going to be busy so I’m not sure a marathon will happen this year at all.

Brooke seems like such the achiever! Maybe she can send some of that over to my son, he is asking me to count down when the three weeks off is over haha. I’m worried it may go longer so I probably need to address that with him ?

Reply

Sara, I think that is a great solution! Can’t wait to hear about your PRs in those shorter distances coming up! Ahhhh it really is so so hard, I bet he is missing his friends too! That is Knox’s biggest struggle right now, he is so social and misses his teacher/buddies/crushes! Good luck and keep me updated!

I’m working from home currently, but got in 5 miles on our home treadmill yesterday while watching a webinar. ?

Way to go getting in a run while watching a webinar! Multitasking is my FAVORITE! I hope your work day is going well Christina!

We had a hot tub when our kids were young and they loved it. We would go out in a snow storm and enjoy sitting in the hot tub while it snowed all around us. There were lots of fun memories with them in the hot tub. We replaced the hot tub about 4 years ago when the other one reached it’s end of life. The kids are all moved out now but my husband and I like to sit out there at night and talk.

Enjoy!!!

Reply

Oh that makes me so excited to use it while it is snowing, thanks for sharing that memory with me. Thanks so much Joan and I hope you have a great day!

The house we bought has an indoor hot tub and outdoor pool (the pool is not heated, so we only have a few months to use it each year)

Indoor hot tub AND outdoor pool… PARTY HOUSE! How fun:). I hope you are having a beautiful day and get in some rest and relaxation! Thanks Jenny!

I am going to just hit the reset button on my running starting next week – as if coming off an injury like I did last year. So, starting at a 1/4 mile and adding a 1/4 mile each run twice a week. I learned a few lessons form being injured twice now. Like, don’t do a 4 mile trail run 2 days after a 9.6 mile long run, lol. I can still go full speed on the elliptical, bike, and core/strengthening exercises, so no huge deal.

When my kids were younger we used to set up one of those 15′ quick-set (inflatable ring) pools with a huge inflatable slide in the summers. We had a blast in that thing. You need a VERY level plot of ground to set it up though.

Doing a rest day today but I still get plenty of steps in – Boeing is still building airplanes so I still get to run/crawl around the factory for my job. I usually get in 8,000-10,000 steps a day working.

Reply

Hi Janae! My 10k was changed to virtual (as with most races around here) but that doesn’t stop me from training. I see a lot more walkers around our trails and in the neighborhood and it makes me happy. I think getting sunlight and exercise is especially important nowadays. Hope you and your family have a great day!

Reply

GO AMY GO!! I am so happy for you and excited that you are still training and doing the virtual 10k. Can’t wait to hear all about it. Thanks Amy and you too!

Reply

I LOVE that you are pushing the reset button! Excited to see you build up again! Oh we will have to get one of those big pools… my kids would love that! Ummm I had no idea your job was so active. That is really neat. Good luck!

Reply

Super jealous about that hot tub! I am sure your kiddos are going to love that! We had great weather here in IL yesterday so we got in a couple of walks and I was able to get in a run. Plus our local gym is closed but they are posting daily workouts lead by one of their instructors. So I did a Pilates class yesterday. Today is an insanity workout which will be new to me but since its supposed to be rainy I am excited to try it. As for my daughter we are trying to keep her on track with what her preschool class is doing right now and not allowing a ton of TV time. We did sign up for ABCMouse.com and she seems to be enjoying that. And my husband is loving teaching her about different artists and having her project inspired that artist. Yesterday was Andy Warhol. Unfortunately for her she is an only child and is really missing her friends. So we let her FaceTime her best friend yesterday.

Reply

That is so cool that your gym is posting the daily workouts for you to do at home and I’m so glad you have been having great weather. We have been using FaceTime a lot too. My kids are missing their friends a lot too. Going to check out ABCMouse… thanks so much for letting me know:)

I have a pool at home, but no hot tub. I am looking forward to getting some laps in this summer!

With working from home I’ve been trying to spend the time I would spend commuting with being more active. I’ve been starting my day doing yoga and pilates and it feels good to get some movement in first thing. Then in the afternoon I’ve been doing an online barre class or going for a run. I also downloaded the Peloton app (free for 90 days!) to try some of their workouts – even though I don’t have the peloton bike or tread I am hoping it will be fine on a normal treadmill.

Reply

Way to go Lauren, that is SO awesome and so helpful in times like this. Ahh I didn’t even think about that, I’m going to try one with my bike! Thanks for sharing:). So fun that you have a pool!

Reply

I just got done with this and it was decent. Told Hope she needed to build a reading fort. When that was build she had to do 15 minutes of silent reading, set alarm. Then I let her listen to a story on the I-pad, also 15 minutes while laying in the reading fort.
That was a nice half hour of her in the fort. :)

In this together. Miss people too.

Totally going to do this with the kids. THANK YOU so much Erica! Wish I could give you a big hug right now:).

Many authors are reading a picture book a day on their Instagram lives! I’d highly recommend Mac Barnett — he is so funny and good with kids!! His are at 12 PST, but they’re live for a whole 24 hours to view at your convenience.

I CANNOT WAIT! Thank you for telling me about this!! Have a beautiful day Natalie!

I don’t have a race on the calendar (I was about to sign up for one and then a bunch of races got postponed so I think I’ll hold off) but I need to keep moving as to not get cabin fever! My mileage will probably increase over these next couple of weeks :)

Reply

Hahaha I was thinking that would happen for a lot of people… We all have more time to run now (and the need to decompress) so maybe we will all just build a really great base with higher mileage. Keep me updated and I hope your run today was a great one!

I did a 30 minute yoga session at home this morning since the gym is closed and my yoga studio is closed. I’m still reporting to work as normal though. They are still trying to figure things out with being a factory, those workers can’t work from home and I also don’t have a laptop to work from home either so it will be interesting.
We really want a hot tub. Yours looks nice and big for the family and will be a fun thing to have.
I don’t have kids but I am also impressed by how the teachers worked hard to put together packets for the kids. One of my co workers was telling me there was a box sent home with school stuff. Being a teacher and making a lesson plan already seems like a lot of work, but to suddenly have to make it take home work adds a lot of stress I am sure.

Reply

I’m so glad you got in some yoga at home! Please keep me updated with what happens at work for you! I totally agree with you, these teachers are incredible! Have a great day friend:)

Three weeks away and my goal race for a new PR poof! Just like that. Gone. Everything else was coming together perfectly. :( I’m keeping up the training but more to vent frustration. Hoping to find the fun again soon.

Reply

This is incredibly hard. I am SO so sorry. I am always here if you need to vent. Don’t forget that these cycles build on each other and your next cycle will just be that much stronger. Thinking about you friend!

Sooooo jealous you have a hot tub!!! I’m 36 weeks pregnant and can’t go in them right now. I used to swim weekly and we’d always go in them after. I could stick my feet in but that’s it. It awesome that you guys can turn the heat down because then if you guys have another baby you could still enjoy the bubbles! We had a hot tub growing up and my mom bought me a blow up raft at a garage sale and I would take it in the hot tub and pretend I was on rapids lol! It was actually really fun!! Even though the raft took up the whole thing!

Reply

Oh Amanda, you are so close to your hot tub days happening again! YES, so happy we can adjust the temperature on it and I’ll have to get one of those rafts for my kids. They will love that haha. Hope you are sleeping well and feeling good. So excited for you!

Reply

Haha sleep…. what’s that ;) definitely ready to not be pregnant anymore, but also happy that she wants to stay inside where it’s safe for a little longer.

I forgot to mention how great it is that Brooke wants to run with you! I will never forget being out kicked in a 5K by an 8 year old girl about 3-4 years ago. I was probably running around 23 minute 5K’s then. I have a couple pretty funny pictures (free pics from the race) of that, she was tiny, lol.

Looks like my 1/2 Marathon is re-scheduled to July 26th, which will work out just fine. So, I will have one in July and one in September hopefully. Will give me plenty of time to prepare!

Reply

SO glad the half is working out great now! Sounds like a great year of racing. Thanks John!

Reply

We have a hot tub and use it a TON! It’s the best when it is cold and snowy outside-then you just wear a beanie or hat.

Reply

I think I’ll wear my beanie in it today (it snowed this morning)! Thanks Leeann and I hope you are enjoying yours a lot right now too! Hope your day is great.

We have a pool and spa. The spa is a great way to just sit and talk after a long day of training while letting the jets work on sore muscles.

Les and I ran together today. There are still people out and about in Honolulu, but not nearly as many as usual.

I agree with being able to connect online. It’s more important now than ever that we stay connected and encourage each other.

I’m excited to have the spa work on my muscles too! So glad you two got in a run together. Thanks for continuing to connect with me. I hope you are having a beautiful day!

We did 2 family walks today and it was so nice to see lots of heights walking, scootering, biking. We did some school work, teaching stuff, put together a puzzle, and are going to watch all of the Marvel movies in the chronological order that they were released.

We are seriously considering ripping out our kids’ carpet and laying some laminate. We just to need to work on getting some tools and you better believe the kiddos will be helping!

I’ve been training since December for the Emigration Canyon half marathon that was on April 4th, it’s been rescheduled to May 16th, so I’m rewinding my training to 8 weeks ago on my training plan, and redoing the last 8 weeks. It’s good timing because I’m getting over the flu so it will give me time to bounce back and rebuild.

I laughed so hard at your brothers tweet! We have a hot tub and while it’s not really my thing (was there when we moved in from previous owners) my husband loves it. Sometimes my 4 yo Allie will go in there instead of taking her bath (shhh….) lol. The muffin tin idea = genius! I think Allie would love that. Fondue night needs to happen at my house ASAP!! Not surprised Andrew got put on call, things are actually much quieter than normal at the hospital … for now. Calm before the storm!

I was supposed to run the Big Sur marathon on 4/26 which happens to also be my 50th birthday. So sad when it got cancelled but have decided that I will continue training and will run my own marathon that day! It’s helping me mentally to continue training. I will have friends run certain sections worth me. It is a gift I’m giving myself. ? thank you for maintaining your blog and being such a source of light and inspiration for others. Peace and love
