What would you do?

8 miles @ 8:07 average to start out my day!

Just in case you were wondering, Skye continues to hide often throughout the day.

I loved her question because it really got me thinking.

As you know, I am the St. George Marathon’s biggest fan.  The first year I ran it back in 2014 felt magical and each time I do it, I just love it.   The year I had to miss it because of health issues I cried at least two buckets worth of tears.  I would love to run this marathon every year of my life if at all possible.  I also think it is a huge benefit to be able to race a course that I have done multiple times already and trained on over the years too.  I have pretty much every hill, every turn and where I always put my sunglasses on during the course memorized.

I love it.  If they ever stopped doing this race I would be extremely sad.

IMG 9104

BUT… I also love traveling for races and experiencing new settings and courses.  I love experiencing something new and the hype of a lot of the big races outside of Utah.  The only problem for me and new marathons would be for me to go and RACE (and want a PR) on a new-to-me course.  I can’t get an OTQ on the St. George course (because the net down is too much) but I feel like it is very beneficial for me to really know a course before I try to go for a PR.  No matter how many times I watch YouTube clips about a course or read race summaries about them… I just need to experience it for myself first before I go for a PR.  That’s why my long-term goal will be to OTQ at CIM in the future because I now know the course a bit better!  I was also thinking that in the future I could go practice on the course a time or two when I take Brooke out to visit her dad about 2 hours away from Sacramento.  I think knowing the course will really help me with my OTQ goal.

IMG 8441 1 jpegIMG 8317 1

My personal hope and dream to answer this question would be to run St. George and do another marathon too every year.  I would love to be able to do two marathons a year so I get the best of both worlds ha.  BUT in the future when I go for CIM again I will skip St. George that year because it just did not give me enough time to recover.  And then when I’m no longer getting faster and racing (I’ve got another decade or two in me, right?), I want to travel the world and run all of the marathons abroad:)

What are your thoughts on Danielle’s question?  Run a variety or repeat offender?

What’s the farthest you’ve traveled for a race? Have you done any international races?

What is everybody’s next race? I need in on this information!

Potty training—> parents reading, what ages did that happen for your kids?

-We think Skye is ready and Brooke got her to go two times in the bathroom yesterday ha.  Any tips or tricks to share?

What kind of eyebrow tint do you use? I’m scared to try on my own but hate paying so much to have it done!

Reply

Hey Renee! I love going to my girl to shape them and tint them every 6ish weeks and then in between I use this stuff and LOVE it: https://amzn.to/39krMPM .
It is also what my sister always uses for her eyebrows. We love it. Have a great day!

I always run the Pocatello Marathon in September. My first race was the half in 2010. So every year I run either the half or full. I have always wanted to visit Prince Edward Island. So when I found a marathon there Of course that was when I had to go. So my husband planned a family vacation in 2018. That is a beautiful course! Loved it!
My next race Riverton, Utah Half Marathon in March.

Oh I have friends that drive up to that race often because they love it so much! Maybe I’ll meet you there one year. This will be your 10th year doing it, that is so cool. Oh I bet that marathon was incredible. Good luck next month and I would love to hear how it goes!

Have you read, “Run the World: My 3,500-Mile Journey Through Running Cultures Around the Globe” by Becky Wade? It’s so freaking good about this girl from Houston / Dallas who takes a year off to run with different cultures around the world. She even meets Usain Bolt. I highly recommend it and you will be researching Ethiopia plane tickets as soon as you are done…like I did.

Reply

Hey Kristi! I haven’t read it so I just ordered it, thank you so much for telling me about it. I cannot wait! Have a great day and let’s meet in Ethiopia for a run:)

Reply

Well, now that is VERY tempting. I would love it. We live near the start of the Chevron Houston race in January (sadly, I got flu and had to cancel the run). But it was so great to see the Ethiopians running around in our little park and our area to prep for the race. I mean…they were just WARMING up and already so fast. One time, a guy (I assumed was the coach) and two girls were running down the street one early morning. They crossed the street after traffic and picked up the speed to normal paces and I was just standing there in awe.

I can’t wait to hear what you think about it. The book is really good and i didn’t know how many running cultures there were out there like in Ireland…in Donegal. We were just there in that area and I kicked myself that i didn’t know ahead of time. She also has recipes after each chapter from the area she just visited. It’s also crazy that I probably ran by the author many times since she ran for Rice and that’s my running area. Enjoy the book!

I have a couple of favorite races and I don’t mind doing them year after year. Probably because all these races are so close to my home. That is always a plus for me :D When it comes to trail running, I really do enjoy discovering new races and areas. I’ve done a race in Scotland (Edinburg) and that’s the farthest I’ve traveled for a race!

My daughter turns 2 next Monday and I think she’s ready for potty training. She has used the potty a couple of times and she’s very interested in it, but we don’t really have the time now to potty train her properly at the moment. Once the new baby is born and the weather is a bit better (I think it helps when kids can walk around the house with no pants on :D ) we’re gonna give it a try as well.

Reply

Hey Sanne! I am with you… close races are the best! Can I meet you for an amazing trail race somewhere? Wouldn’t that be the coolest. AHHH Happy Bday to your daughter next Monday and keep me updated on it all. Such a big and exciting year for you guys. Enjoy your day friend!

I love Danielle’s question, and I have been thinking about this a lot lately! I’m not running the LA marathon this year. I just felt like I was burnt out on the course… But it’s a great course! I love that it’s a point to point, starting at Dodgers stadium and ending in Santa Monica. The crowds are fantastic too, the whole time! But, I just felt like I need a change.
I would love to travel for a race! And, my hubby and I have been talking about St. George… We’ll see ?
I have absolutely no races on the calendar yet for 2020… That feels a little weird, but I am feeling like I am enjoying running more again, so that’s good!
Oh potty training… That seems so long ago for me (boys are 19 and almost 16), but I do remember it wasn’t too bad. Good luck! But if Brooke got her to go a couple of times, I think that’s a great sign!
Oh…. I’m sure you saw Ali’s podcast series for this week, Love on the Run Week…. It is so good! Today she has Des and Ryan Linden on. Yay!
Have a great day ?

Point to point courses are my favorite too! I’ll have to do LA one year! You are being smart to recognize you need a change and I can’t wait to hear what that change is (and I’m crossing my fingers that it is St. George). Okay, I have to listen to that episode TODAY! I cannot wait, thanks Wendy and I hope your Tuesday is a beautiful one!

Oooo…. and tomorrow on Ali’s show she has Ben and Steph Bruce on!! They should be super fun to listen to!

Just wanted to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEEK, and you are doing it RIGHT by starting the celebrations early because that is the only way to do it!!!! :)

The farthest I’ve traveled for a race is Key West—6 times now with my room reserved for year 7 next year already. ha ha I did travel to Seattle for a race/to visit relatives, but I ended up being injured and couldn’t run it. I love traveling for races. It’s a pipe dream, but I’d love to run the Havana Marathon. I never told you about Key West—well, the race was warm–75 degrees and sunny—for a girl from Pennsylvania, and I died a bit the last three miles, but I didn’t let it get to me. I wasn’t “racing” it anyway. I had best time on my trip though—5 days of JEN TIME. It truly fed my soul. I ran, biked, ate lots of good food, and soaked up sun and happiness :) There is something truly magical about that place……..

My next race…..I’m not sure! Nothing right now! I entered the lottery (based on luck not times) for the Philly Broad Street 10 Miler. I’ll know next week if I got in–fingers crossed because it’s a great, fun race!!!!!!

Have a fun day, Janae! Keep smiling and being awesome :)

Reply

Thank you so much Jen! I really think I need to come out and do Key West with you next year and I LOVE that your room is already booked for next year:) . Oh thank you for telling me about that Jen and I am SO glad that you had 5 days for YOU. It’s so needed and especially in YOUR place. Let me know if you get in to that race. Thank you Jen, I really appreciate you!

Happy Birthday Week! Today is my actual birthday and so far I have consumed 2 donuts with 2 more waiting on my desk. My coworkers know me too well. Some major sugar crashes are going to happen today.

I definitely like doing different races, a race always seems to go quicker if I don’t know the course very well and don’t know what to expect. But I do try to do the local races each year. I have no official race plans for this year….yet.

We started potty training our daughter around 2 1/2. But it really clicked for her just before her first birthday. But she is an only child. I truly believe when there are older siblings kids catch on quicker because they want to be just like their big brother or sister. I hope Skye potty trains quickly! I am sure some Elsa undies will help!

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BDAY CORRINNE! I hope your day is absolutely perfect and I love your coworkers. I’ll have a donut to celebrate you today too. Haha so true, I’ll have to go grab some Elsa undies today. Thanks Corrinne and happy birthday!

I thought Andrew always took Brooke to see her dad?

Andrew usually does! But I’m thinking when I want to do cim again I can go and get in some practice! Have a beautiful day Nancy!

I just potty trained my 2.5yr old in December. I read the Oh Crap! potty training book and used her method, and we were done in like a week and a half. No pull-ups and she also nap/night trained herself in that time without me actively doing anything. (I’m pregnant and there was no way I was getting up in the night for her to use the bathroom. I used a diaper at night and she just started consistently waking up dry!) Anyway I highly recommend the book :)

Reply

Ooh, I’m going to be checking these comments repeatedly for the potty training tips, too! We have a lot of big changes coming up for our family, so I’m not going to push my little guy, but I think he’s definitely getting ready.
I have run 12 marathons total, but only on three different courses. My beloved local marathon changed its course entirely a couple years ago, though, so I’ll never run my favorite course again :( I like switching it up, but honestly mainly keep sticking to what I’ve done before for convenience and cost. It’s way easier to drive half hour for a local race than fly somewhere to the other side of the country!

If Skye is showing interest start. We did a pee-pee party with our kids. Basically, we had them pick out their favorite salty foods and their favorite drink, then we bought big boy/girl underwear. We had them eat and drink as much as they liked, had them wear the underwear, and set a timer for 15 min and when it went off they had to go sit on the toilet. Sometimes they went earlier than 15, and there were a few accidents. It worked for them but we still did nighttime pull-ups for a little while longer until they were able to really get up on their own.

My first race for 2020 is the Emigration Half in Salt Lake on April 4th! I’m really hoping to get sub 1:45 in the half this year (current PR is 1:53), I’m mostly hoping to shake off the racing dust in April and then slowly work the time down as the year progresses!

I also highly recommend the book ‘Oh Crap, Potty Training. Potty trained by 2 year old in less than a week.

Good luck on the potty training. We are on day 7 no diapers with our toddler. We just waited until he was ready. We had a couple times when we thought he was ready but he wasn’t quite there. The thing that worked for us was going all in. He wears pull ups for night but otherwise no going back! It also worked for us to skip undies. When he wore them he had a hard time remembering they aren’t diapers so he just goes commando for now. Hope you guys find what works for you. I have an infant so I’m super excited to think we may have one less kid in diapers!

I am definitely a repeat offender on some trail races. Squamish, BC has a race that I have gone back to 5x – doing a different distance each time.

I have a 50km in July and then possibly another race in August – lottery is this coming weekend! (It’s 100 miler race and apparently there are over 500 applicants for 180 spots give or take! – yikes)

I have been to Oregon, San Francisco, New York, Boston and Lethbridge, AB , the Central Cascades in Methow Valley (Sun Mountain among others. (I live in BC, Canada). Running has taken me to some pretty cool places.

Have a fantastic day Janae!

So my girls were potty trained at 16 and 17 months. My girls were ready but my plan was to start prior to the terrible twos. 2 is absolutely an age that kids can get it. The US has the oldest potty training age! Go for it.
I am trying to decide on my next race. I think a variety is nice but sometimes the same course gives some peace of mind!

Happy Birthday week!
Buy her some Elsa undies, she will want to wear them.

I chuckled a little at Danielle’s comment because being from MN myself, you either love or hate Grandma’s marathon. There doesn’t seem to be a middle ground with that race. Personally, I am not fan! But I get why some would love it. I love the TC Marathon instead. I have ran one of the weekend events every year since my very first race in 2007! I think it’s fun to travel for a race but I agree that it’s really hard to travel for a race and go for a PR. There are just too many unknowns. So for me, it’s hard to travel for a marathon. But traveling for a half marathon is a lot of fun! Such a great way to see a new city! If you are looking for a destination race, I highly recommend the Banff Half Marathon. Great course and Banff is SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

Hello Janae – your question, have you run an international race? Ha- kinda….I’ve done the Freep 1/2 Marathon 3 times…it starts in Detroit and you cross the bridge over into Canada and run thru Canada for a little bit and then you take the tunnel back to the US….I haven’t run much at all lately, and I think the 1/2 marathon distance is my max, but this was a great race to do. I toy w/the idea of running/training for another 1/2 marathon, but want it to be a fun one.
Love following your blog.

I have one race I do every year – the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Half and then I LOVE LOVE LOVE a good destination run. I feel like I get caught up in sight seeing and the miles pass faster.

I live in Winnipeg, Canada and I’ve done races in Vancouver and Ottawa and I’ve also run in NYC and Texas (but happen to be there for other reasons and races just seemed to line up). But I would love to do an international race. And I’m heading to Eau Claire for my first full in 12 weeks (but who’s counting, right)?

I think our girls are about the same age. I initiated potty training with Elliana over Christmas break. Seriously , THIS BOOK was too good: https://www.amazon.ca/Oh-Crap-Potty-Training-Everything/dp/1501122983/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=potty+training+books&qid=1581452604&sr=8-1 You’ve done potty training before so you have the basics. Trust your gut on when they are ready. You got this!

I love the Richmond (Virginia) marathon and have run it four times. I feel like when I’m ready to try for my BQ, that is where I will go. But I also love the idea of running different races and checking some other states off my list. I’ve run nine marathons, and seven have been in Virginia. NEXT…in just a few weeks, Atlanta (the mere mortal Atlanta Marathon on 3/1, to be clear :) )

Reply

That IS an interesting question!
I am a repeat offender! My full marathons have consisted of Boston (4x) and San Francisco (Nike women’s 6x, San Francisco 1x) and all of my halves have been in San Francisco (I live in NJ). I am such a creature of habit. I think a lot of us runners are, which is why we can train with such dedication and consistency. Knowing the travel details, hotels, locations of the start/finish areas and the courses give me a sense of ease when there is the looming variable of how you will feel race day.
Vancouver (from NJ) is the furthest I’ve traveled for a race, but I’ve run in every country I’ve visited. When I am on my own schedule, running around the city I am visiting is the best way for me to explore and get a feel for the area in a completely different way than sightseeing allows.

I have the San Francisco marathon scheduled for July, the Giants race in San Francisco in September.
I entered the lottery for NYC…and will enter the lottery for the SeaWheeze half in Vancouver tomorrow!

Both are GREAT but the older I get the more fun I have traveling.

When I wasn’t married I ran the same marathon every year and my goal was to run a sub 4. But I was having so much fun so I kept on running marathon and the following year I BQ’d . I went on to qualify a few more times on the same course but then I got married……We started traveling to other states and I always found a marathon to run. WE went to China for the Great Wall. Rome a couple times. Scotland. It’s been so much fun. I haven’t BQ’d since I got married but I am having lots of fun I hope to run Boston again some day but it will happen when it is suppose to….
