Just a Quick Hello!

Happy Martin Luther King Day!  I know a lot of you out there are off from work/school today and hopefully spending the day doing your favorite things so I’ll just keep it short (also, I don’t have a lot to say because I stayed home all day with Skye…  She was feeling SO much better yesterday but I did not want to risk anyone else getting whatever she had)!

See you in the morning with a normal post again and I am positive that Skye is ready to no longer be quarantined!

Random question of the day… I’d love to hear any post requests or questions I can answer in a post and I’ll get started on them today!

I would love to see a post with a combined training log for a marathon. I know you asked readers if they wanted to see something like that a while back and I personally would! But I know that probably takes a long time to put together too so totally get it if that isn’t something you want to do. Have a great day!

HEY KEL!!! Thanks so much for your comment… so this is kind of a long story ha but I actually put the entire post together and had it all ready to go but a teammate reached out to me telling me that they didn’t think it was fair to post it online. It’s a tough situation because my thoughts are the more the merrier but their thought is that it isn’t mine to share… I really wish that I could and I was SO excited to but that is what ended up happening. I am SO sorry. It definitely caused a few sleepless nights ha. I hope you have a great day too!!

No problem, that makes complete sense considering you are on a team with a coach, etc. so I get it! Do you have any suggestions for creating something like an outline or a “skeleton” of a training plan to take your running to the next level? I try to do a long run and some type of speed work out each week in addition to my other runs, but it can be tough to figure out what pace to aim for during specific workouts. One of these days I’ll get a coach, but it’s just not in the cards right now. And thanks for all the sharing that you do, your blog really is motivating and enjoyable to read.

Hey!!! I am so glad that Skye is feeling better! One of mine had the flu right before Christmas and it was terrible. Thankfully no one else got it and we were able to celebrate and go away on vacation as planned (Grand Cayman). I k ow you went recently , we love it there too!!

I would love to know a couple of things ?
1. How do you manage your time with running strength training, family and BLOG WRITING?? I am amazed that you get a post out everyday …. but of course I never miss a beat and love following along.
2. How do you get affiliate links and/or sponsorship to make some money while blogging?
I have been blogging for a few years but I seem to hit a road block with affiliate sponsors and also remaining consistent through the ups and downs of life.

Thanks in advance!! Have an amazing day!
ps it’s freezing here (11) so I am taking my run to the treadmill today ?

AHHH Karen, I am SO thrilled that you guys went to Grand Cayman (and that everyone was healthy too)! Absolutely going to answer both of those questions in an upcoming post… thank you so much! I hope the treadmill was a great one and that you stay inside as much as possible!

I second Kel! I would love to see a post with a marathon training log, more specifically how you train for St. George. Another posted I would be interested in is travel arrangements for the St. George marathon. Places to stay, restaurants to eat at etc! My sister and I are planning for the St. George marathon this year!!! Any info would be appreciated!!
I hope Skye feels better ASAP!

Oh this just makes me so happy…. YOU TWO ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS RACE. It really is the best! I will definitely share ideas on great ways to train and travel arrangements (must eats too)! As far as the training log goes… I was SO excited to post it but ended up having a teammate share that she didn’t feel it was right for me to post the teams training all in one place like that so that is why I never ended up posting it. I am so sorry. I hope you have the best day and thanks again!

I think a great post would be comparing how much, type of food you eat during training vs when you are not training. As in, how many snacks do you eat, tips to stay hydrated, etc.

Glad to hear Skye is doing better. I get to take my little one out in the cold today for her first Dr appt! ?

Hi Janae! I think you’ve touched upon this in various posts, but I would love to read your tips on getting through scary speed workouts. How do you approach really hard workouts and stick with the paces when you just want to quit? Thanks so much!

Abbey, LOVE this idea. It’s something we all can relate to and definitely needs to be talked about. It will be coming soon! Thanks Abbey and have a beautiful day.

LOVE these ideas so much Emily, I’ll definitely write about that. It really is crazy how much my hunger changes with speed/marathon training. First doctor appointment ahhh that is so so exciting. Congrats Emily!

I asked around if someone would rather run the same marathon multiple times or run many different marathons. It was more favorable to run a variety. What are your thoughts Janae? I feel like I am a repeat offender for one race in particular, Grandma’s marathon. I love the idea of getting to run in different locations on different courses, but I don’t mind coming back to my favorite time and time again.

Reply

Oh that is such a great question… I think I’m like you, it’s fun to go out and try others but my heart is with perfecting the same course. That was hard for me with CIM because I just had no idea what was next. Definitely going to talk about this asap and I can’t wait to hear everyone’s opinions. Hope you have the best day and Grandma’s is definitely on my list!

Reply

I’d love to hear a race comparison between St George and CIM! Course comparison, how it felt different on your body, if the downhill at St George helps or hurts you or if the gradual course at CIM is easier on your legs etc etc:)

I love love love this idea. Just reading your comment got me excited to really think more about it! Hope you have a beautiful day thanks again Keri.

I love all your tips and tricks on running gear and running faster. I just pr the marathon with your power bun and amazon long sleeve shirt! I made sure I ate a bunch while training and fueled all through the marathon. Love all your wisdom, style and speedy stories!

LISA!!!!!!! Huge huge huge huge huge congrats to you. I am SO thrilled about your PR and I hope you are celebrating (and recovering big time)! Keep me updated with everything you are up to and thank you for your sweet comment. Happy Monday!

I would love to see a post on how you manage your time and still get enough sleep with running and the blog full time. As well, any tips on reflexive gear to stay safe in the dark? I have a head lamp but still feel like people can not see me and I’m running very early in the morning. Love what you post and thanks for keeping us all so positive!

Hey Katie! GREAT blog post ideas. Thank you so much for asking and I’ll get working on those. Thank you for keeping me positive too… best community ever!

Glad she is feeling better, and hope you all stay healthy!
I would love a post on how you motivate yourself during a run if you get bored or just start thinking you don’t want to be there! I hit that mental wall sometimes, where I know I’m fine physically, but mentally it feels like a drag.
My random questions would be . . . what are your favorite books to read with your kids, what’s your favorite season, and what would younger you think of current you? (I always feel like younger me would be surprised by me today–in a lot of good ways!)

Reply

Thank you so much and you are not along with that mental wall! Definitely going to get answering those questions and thank you for getting me thinking about that last one… such an interesting thing to think about! I hope you are having a beautiful day Kristin!

What about 5 key workouts for the marathon or something like that. Or when to time your last 20 miler, 3 weeks before or 2? Selfishly just started marathon training and this would help me ?

Also my 5 year old has been killing it at his skiing lessons I had written before I was nervous. And now he goes on chair lifts (ours are just like an open chair not a gondola) so I will start getting gray hair soon I’m sure

Reply

Bahaha just start plucking your gray hair like me… my heart rate is 493 while on the chair lifts with them. SO happy that he is loving it. So exciting and I will absolutely get started on writing a post on that. SO excited for your upcoming marathon training!

I would love to hear how you balance mom life, work life and running life! I’m a first time mom (my baby girl is 14 weeks!) and can’t imagine how I will make it all work once my maternity leave is over. Learning from other moms is always the best, I think!

Reply

AHHHH congrats on your baby girl! I am SO excited for you and I hope you are getting some sleep! I will absolutely get to work on that!

This would be a guest post idea, but I would love to see more of your sister’s house updates! Even if they aren’t complete – just what she’s working on, what she’s done, and maybe her tips/ideas of the biggest impact changes people can do to their homes?

Reply

Oh I love this! YES YES YES! She is actually almost done with her main floor and she told me she would do a post on it so I’ll have her add her tips for the biggest impact changes people can do. Such a great idea. Have a great day Meg!

Hi Janae! I look forward to reading your blog every morning. I live in Indiana (eastern time) and am always so impressed when you have a post up right away in the morning! My question is about Utah – we are visiting in April for spring break. We are staying in La Verkin for a couple of nights while we visit Zion. Do you have any restaurants recommendations? Or specific must-do things in the area? Also, I will need to do a long run for Boston training while I am there. Do you if this is a good area in run? Thanks!

Reply

Glad Skye is on the mend!!! She looks perkier in the first photo, too.

Someone else mentioned info on Utah. I think it would be fun to hear more about Utah and how to get around, what’s best to see and eat, and RUN! I’d love to visit Utah in the summer (or is it way too hot?) and would enjoy learning about some trails/paths/routes. You could put a post up about your favorite places in Utah or where you’d recommend a visitor to go.

Have a great week Janae!

Would you still run if you weren’t talented or fast?
I’m 45 and improved for a while but I pretty much need to accept I’m a middle to back of the pack runner. Sometimes I’m fine with that, but I’ve achieved good things in other areas of life and was raised to be ambitious. Sometimes I wonder why I’m bothering with running…
I’m still searching for my sub 2 half marathon…

Hi Janae!
I’m a long time reader and big fan!!! Glad to hear Skye is feeling better! I know you created a post a little bit ago about this topic, but I would love to learn more about what you eat on a light, moderate, or hard training day! Thanks for always being such an inspiration for my running and overall a better person!

Would love to read a blog post about your plans for growing your family!

I’d like to see a post or two on speed. I’d like to start carving off some time on my “normal” pace my body has become accustomed to and likes. Would love to see how you’d recommend going about getting faster but also while training for say a half marathon. Thank you!

Reply

I’m not a runner but I have followed your blog since the beginning and love to hear about your family! I can still remember the morning I saw your pregnancy announcement for Brooke and how happy (and shocked) I was for you! I remember your blog being down from all the traffic and excitement. ?

I am curious on a few (maybe too personal?) posts such as what your plans are for growing your family and what your current thoughts are on if/when you may go back to teaching. It would be fun to hear what Andrew first thought of you having a “blogging” career. Also, how you monetize your blog and what you do during “slow” blog periods. I would love to hear how you handle times where you may be struggling emotionally. Or maybe you don’t, hallelujah for you! How do you get past it, what are your coping mechanisms, etc?

Thanks Janae!

I’d love a post on your plantar issues and how running seems to affect it. You have given me hope that I can still run despite plantar fasciitis so I’d love to hear more!

For a non-running one… I’d love to see a travel suggestion post. Utah has so many beautiful parks and cities and is on our list for travel in the future. What are your favorite area restaurants, places to visit, things to do. I know you touch on restaurants sometimes, but it would be nice to have it all in one spot.

Hi Janae! I’d love a post about injuries and mental state. I feel like sometimes I am only borderline injured but then if I think I am injured I get actually injured. Or sometimes I am just in denial. I think I’m just a beginner and don’t know my body that well. But I also remember reading in Deena Kastor’s book (thanks for recommending by the way!) that there was this time she thought her calf was really tight but it ended up being all in her head. So I’d love to know what you think about recognizing an injury and if there’s a mental component there too. Love your blog, keep up the great work!!

Reply

Hi Janae! Love your blog and agree along the lines of Amy S.. for an injuries post.

I have been dealing with a stress reaction in my tibia and the rehab seems endless. I didn’t know what it was and had to wait for an MRI since the xray just showed swelling but I was in a boot for a month, I did swimming for the first two weeks (and a couple 30 min bike rides that were probably too early) then added biking the following 2 weeks. Then I started doing short walks after 4 weeks in the boot and took the boot off.

Now, middle of 5th week and my osteopath saw my MRI from last week (it took a while) and thinks I need to go back to square one: no exercise or aqua jog if anything for two weeks. Will slowly ramp up my running volume but not for another month will I be walking or running. I’m suuuper frustrated and I know that I probably should have taken the first two weeks totally off and didn’t so now its taking twice as long to heal.

I’m trying to be patient but am very active, it helps me to organize my brain and my day so I’ve been feeling pretty scattered and low. If you have any coping strategies when you were going through a tough period/off time with running, or during injuries, I would appreciate whatever wisdom you can share.

Hey! I know I am a few days late in commenting but I just thought of your post ideas request and I’ve been so curious about your daily routine. How do you fit it all in between the many roles you hold each day? I have 3 littles as well and man, it is so hard to stay on top of everything every day and still get sleep. The way you set aside time to spend with your kiddos (all of the skiing! Amazing!) and still seem like you keep up with life (hello running, blog, cooking, house projects.) You are impressive in so many ways! And how do you combat feelings of overwhelm?! Heaven knows we al experience it from time to time (or all of the time for some of us! Ha!) Keep being the awesome role model you are!
