10 Annoying Runner Things.

Our January this year has been SO much better weather-wise than it normally is here in January and I’m extremely grateful for that.  I love the 20’s.. it’s the teens that are a bit hard for me.

Emilee and I met up for 10 miles of talking… I mean running ha.  Isn’t it amazing how you just never seem to run out of things to talk about with your training partners?

We went over to my sister’s house for a little bit.  Skye changed dress-up outfits 50 times and Brooke went down the stairs slide (that the kids put together) 50 times.

IMG 5616

It feels like the Ikea building is never going to end.  I told Andrew that it’s like the adult version of legos so it should be fun. He doesn’t agree.

Brinner.

IMG 5627

Brooke is very ready for her room to be done.. we are almost there!

IMG 5622

So happy that she is feeling like herself again!

Random story of the day:  On Sunday Andrew was talking with a neighbor and mentioned his love for cheesecake… A few hours later and this homemade cheesecake was at our door.  This experience really inspired me to do more of this for others—>  Find the things that are important to them and act on it.

This cheesecake hit the spot.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

Thank you so much for your post recommendations yesterday (and feel free to add more here), I’ll have those for you soon but until then….

We love running and we are extremely grateful for it BUT of course there are a few annoying running things that come with the sport so let’s talk about them for a second:

*When your Garmin tells you to MOVE a few hours after you just finished your long run (picture from my old watch).  NO I DO NOT.. I’ll stay on the couch.

IMG 0514

*Another old picture but…. WHICH GARMIN IS CORRECT?!?  We started our watches within 3 seconds of each other and ran side by side the entire time.   .29 miles makes a big difference in your average pace.  A lot of runners are stats people and it’s kind of annoying when we don’t know if our stats are right!  We need to experiment with my new Garmin to see which one is right.

IMG 0596

*Andrew is convinced that our treadmill speed is off (ie he thinks we are running faster than it says).  Who knows if it is but HOW WILL WE EVER KNOW EXACTLY how fast/far we go on treadmills because there is a chance they are all off!

*How FAST we can lose our fitness and how crazy long it feels sometimes to get it back.  It takes 8 months to build it up and 3 days to lose it (okay, that is beyond dramatic but right now I kind of feel that way)!

AF5EF6D2 0FC2 4A74 B960 6D7D60CFBF66

*When the weather gets in the way of our PRs on race day;)

*Having to wash your hair more often because we get sweaty from running so much (I swear… If I didn’t run then I would probably wash my hair once every ten days so running forcing me to wash my hair more often is probably best for me).

IMG 6213

*How bad it hurts when we take a shower after a run where we were the recipients of some major chafing.   The chafing on my inner thighs at CIM really hurt.

IMG 2480

*When a timing chip doesn’t work correctly at a race.  This happened to me one time at a half marathon and it said that I ran way slower than my Garmin (and the clock when I crossed the finish line) did (by like 15 minutes) but they looked at the videos to figure out what my time was.

*When we get injured by doing something GOOD (running) for our bodies…

*How I can be training for an ultra or marathon yet still get winded walking up stairs while holding Skye.  Shouldn’t running just put us in really good shape for everything!?

—————————————————————————————————————————————-

Anything annoying that you can think of that comes along with your running?

Anyone feel like their treadmill or the treadmill that they use is off and you are actually running faster/slower than it says that you are?!

I’d love to hear something nice that somebody has done for you recently (like our cheesecake situation:)… always need ideas!

Cheesecake… yes or nope?  Plain or with toppings?

Runs for cookies blogger Katie Did a pretty involved experiment to find out how accurate her treadmill was. It sounds like a project that would be right up Andrews alley!

Okay, I CANNOT wait to check this out. Thanks so much for sharing J… this is going to be awesome.

DC rainmaker recently reviewed a treadmill sensor that should show what speed your treadmill is really going!

I love that “Find the things that are important to them and act on it.” Good reminder!

I also agree about getting injured when doing something good for you body! So annoying. My other one would be all the LAUNDRY we have to do! I would do laundry way less if I didn’t need those sports bras sooner.

Reply

It’s amazing how much it means when we feel noticed and that we are worth someone else’s time!
OH THE LAUNDRY! How did I forget about that haha… yep, running clothes motivate me to do the laundry more haha. I hope you are having a really great day!

Reply

Smitten kitchen cheesecake bars ftw! I swirled in homemade raspberry jam.
Chafing and the laundry – definitely agree those are some runner things I don’t like. Along with the feeling like you lose fitness soooo quickly part. Your recent posts about how you feel that way have been encouraging and helped me not to be so hard on myself.
ALSO IS THAT A FROZEN MOTORBIKE THING SKYE IS ON?!?!?!?

Reply

I need those right now… I’ll have to make those for Andrew! YOU ARE NOT ALONE… it’s just what happens (to all of us too)! Keep me updated with how you are doing and we will get our fitness back!

Yes, it is a Frozen Motorbike and I think it is her favorite thing ever. I hope you have a beautiful day Chloe!

Reply

Ohhh that move prompt is so annoying lol! I turned mine off one day when I was grumpy after a long run.

Reply

YOU CAN TURN IT OFF?!? AHHHHH I’m going to right now. Have a great day Christine!

Probably the most annoying thing about running for me is how expensive races are now! Even 5k’s in my area are around $50…why!?

One nice thing that I regularly do is giving someone my cart at Aldi and letting them keep the quarter (not sure if you have them in Utah, but the grocery store charges a quarter to take a cart and gives it back when you return the cart). It’s annoying to walk it back anyway so it helps both of us out :)

Reply

I’ll 2nd that – why are races so expensive?? The 4th of July 5K in my hometown is now $30 per person – it used to be $12! They’ve added a medal, which obviously increased the cost. It’s underwritten by a local company, so if they didn’t do that, I’m sure it’d be more $$. I miss it being a simple race, no frills.

Reply

Exactly!! I don’t like to keep medals and usually donate them (same goes for t-shirts) so I wish there were more options to get rid of add-ons and lower the price.

Reply

Such a good idea… the option to get rid of the add-ons!

Reply

$50 for a 5k?! I swear I used to pay that much for a half-marathon! I don’t need another medal… I just don’t want to spend a fortune. I hope that they eventually go back to the way it was!

Reply

Ok so I think you have a Nordic Track treadmill as well. I think I have the same one as you and both my husband and I struggle on it!!! Its very hard to run on and we think it’s off as well. Even though they have me run the speed test – 10 mph and it checks out, my husband seems to think their computer is off…I thought it was interesting you made that comment about Andrew and yours…

Reply

YES!!! So we have thought it was either the move (because it felt right on at our old house!) or the new software update. It’s SO frustrating. Let me know if you guys figure yours out. Hope you have a beautiful day!

Reply

I think the most annoying runner thing for me is when my Garmin Watch wont sync my runs into the Garmin App in my phone, where I keep all my records and number and amount of mileage ran by week/month/year. They literally never sync and those runs get “lost in translation.” Numbers are important to me, and not keeping the record of them really ticks me off. This has happened to me twice, and after the second time I ALWAYS check on my phone that the run was properly registered.

Reply

HEY YOU!! Oh I totally have that problem too, it’s so annoying. WE NEED ALL OF OUR INFORMATION LOGGED PERFECTLY!
I hope you have a beautiful day friend!

Reply

YES on the treadmill! I run a lot during my lunch break at the gym we have at my work. 2 of the treadmills always have me running way slower and 2 of them have me running faster. Even more frustrating is when I turn up the speed on the treadmill and the pace on my watch slows down…HOW DOES THAT WORK?!?!

Reply

Wait what?! You turn the speed up on the treadmill and the pace on your watch goes slower?! That would drive me NUTS!

I hope you have a great day Jamie and that those treadmills start cooperating!

Reply

I am sure my treadmill is off too. I bought it used though so I’m not going to complain, at least I’m getting some running in. It’s hard this time of year in Michigan to get outside and run. I live in the country and our dirt roads are basically packed snow which is really slippery. I do get outside when I can. Last week my sister in law stopped at my house to pick up some eggs (we have chickens) and while she was there she washed my dishes and folded a load of laundry I had yet to fold (I was at work)! I almost cried. And I am 100% a yes on cheesecake! My sister makes a really good white chocolate raspberry one.

Reply

Oh Jenn, I would always be on the treadmill in the conditions that you live in! Your sister-in-law is incredible and I love that she did that for you. Those simple acts just mean the world to us. Hope you get some of your sister’s cheesecake soon!

Reply

All such good annoyances here… Ha ha
On Saturday, a neighbor friend was posting on IG throughout the day, pictures of her son baking cookies and making other yummy looking food (he is fairly extreme on the autistic scale). He was doing much of the work on his own, so I was complimenting each picture she posted…. Next morning, after my long run, she texted me to say her son left me some of his cookies ?. They are so good! (Candied bacon chocolate chip cookies). It too has inspired me to do more things like that.
Oh, and I love all types of cheesecake!
Have a great day Janae ?

Reply

Okay, your story with your neighbor gave me goosebumps. People are just the best. I hope you get some cheesecake soon friend! Thanks Wendy, you too!

Reply

Ugh. Injuring ourselves while doing something good for our bodies. Currently waiting to find out if I have a stress fracture in my left foot. I know it will heal. I know its not the end of the world. But dang if it isn’t annoying…

Reply

Oh Jennifer. That is beyond annoying. I am so so so sorry. Will you please let me know what the diagnosis is? I am pretty sure I cried for a week straight when I got mine, don’t be afraid to feel what you need to feel. It gets so much better but it is SO frustrating in the moment.

Reply

Since most treadmills are mis-calibrated, I got a Garmin Footpod to wear. You run outside with the Footpod, and with the GPS turned on for your watch. Then the Footpod uses the GPS data to calibrate the Footpod to your stride. Then, when you run on the treadmill, your Footpod will give you a much more accurate speed!
It’s a fantastic tool, and it’s really crazy to see how off treadmills usually are.

Reply

I absolutely need this! Is this the one that you have? I’m going to buy whatever one you have ha. https://amzn.to/2Gd1LW0

Thanks for sharing Lauren!

Reply

So looking into it now, it looks like Garmin discontinued the one I use. The one you linked to on Amazon is not quite the same thing, so I’m not sure how it would work for treadmills.
The only place I could find the one I use is on eBay.
If you Google, “Amazon ANT+ Foot Pod for Forerunner,” pick the eBay result where it is listed for $70.99, and that’s the one! It works like a charm, and you just have to swap out it’s battery (just a regular watch battery) every year or so!

Reply

Janae,

Yup, the running dynamics pod and the footpod are different animals (I have both).

I read about this thing over on DC Rainmaker: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2020/01/npe-runn-treadmill-smart-sensor-everything-you-need-to-know.html

I only skimmed the article but it appears that you place stickers on the treadmill at a set distance and the sensor reads how many times the sticker passes by. So, that should give you exact mileage. Looks like the cost is $99.99, so not too bad. Something to look into at least.

Reply

I just looked on the Garmin website because I have a Garmin foot pod as well and it seems they’ve discontinued making it. The one you found on Amazon is not the same thing. I’m shocked they no longer carry it. It definitely helps with more accuracy but I will be honest, sometimes it’s wayyyyy off. If you don’t calibrate it correctly (for example if my battery dies and I change it but don’t calibrate it correctly by running outside first and just hope on the treadmill) it will say you’re running a 12 min pace when you are actually running a 9 min pace. At least mine does.

Reply

I always feel like the treadmill is fast! The same pace I run outside feels like sprinting on the treadmill.

That was so nice of your neighbor! I love baking for people to show care, but encouraging friends by tagging in positive Instagram posts or sending texts reminding them how great they are is one of my favorites!

Reply

Glad that we aren’t alone! It’s so true… tagging people on IG to positive things really does make such a difference. I hope you have a beautiful day Mariah!

Reply

Andrew might be right about your treadmill, the belt will stretch out! You can calibrate it, though, if you really want to.

Also I got annoyed with my watch telling me to move so I disabled that feature haha.

Reply

Oh we have tried calibrating it but it still feels so off! I think the move either messed it up or the new software update! I DIDN’T KNOW WE COULD TURN THAT OFF. The things I learn from you guys! I wish I could send you a Kneader’s cookie right now:) Have a beautiful day Victoria!

Reply

I would love to read a post with details about your home updates! We are thinking of doing some work around our house… but I don’t know where to start!

Reply

SUCH a great idea! I will definitely do a post about this. Good luck and you’ll have to keep me updated with what things you guys do. Have a fabulous day Bailey!

Reply

I swear the floor at my gym is not flat which makes the treadmills feel slower or faster depending on the direction they face (they go both directions) – if I want to feel fast I run on the “downhill” treadmills.

Reply

Oh that is so frustrating! I’m pretty sure I would choose the downhill treadmills every time haha. Hope you have a great day!

Reply

Hi Janae! I totally relate to everything you posted. Love the idea to do something nice for others.. there are definitely small kindnesses people have shown me over the years that I doubt they remember but I definitely do! Have a great day!!

Reply

Right!? We will never forget the cheesecake and it’s amazing how these small kindnesses really change the world. Thank you and you too!

Reply

Oh my goodness. I just got to work and saw that my teammate brought me a souvenir from his India trip! Pretty sure that little thing is just going to make my day!! I’m so inspired to do this for someone else now!

Reply

The treadmill thing… ugh. I had to reset my Apple Watch and it lost all of my previous stored exercise data, so it doesn’t quite know how to track my pace on a treadmill correctly anymore. I’ve just been determining the distance I’m running based on what the treadmill shows, but it drives me NUTS that my watch doesn’t match! And it’s just too cold/icy/snowy/gross outside for me to get my runs done outside to recalibrate my watch right now. First world problems, I guess! :)
Love cheesecake! There’s someone I work with who makes a salted caramel cheesecake… mmmm it’s the best cheesecake I’ve ever had!

Reply

The stairs! OH my goodness. I live on the third story of our apartment building. I’ve lived there for a year. I go up and down the stairs at least 3 times a day, usually it’s more. So that’s at least 1095 times of going up and down the stairs. I still get winded every time I go up! I run at least 9 miles a week usually a little more, I ran a 10k in November. But still stairs kill me!

Reply

Sounds like you have some pretty great neighbors! I’m all about the cheesecake. I definitely prefer plain cheesecake over having any toppings on it. It’s just so good to begin with that it doesn’t need anything added to it.

Reply

I think your idea that losing fitness takes 3 days and gaining it back takes 8 months is pretty accurate, hah! I was sick for about 2 weeks and just as I was starting to run again I slipped on the ice and fell on my tailbone. I feel like it will be 2021 before I feel strong again, hah! And thank you for that reminder to do something nice for others. I’ve been having a little pity party for myself because of the dang tailbone, so I really needed to hear that message today!

Reply

I swear my treadmill tells me I’m running faster than I am, but I also secretly hope it’s true and need to stop googling, “how accurate our treadmill speeds/distances” haha!

An annoying story to combine two of your points. In college we had a race in Louisville where it rained HARD. PRs weren’t going to happen. But it rained so hard that it knocked out the timing system for the girls’ race so none of us know our times and it’s like that race never existed!
Another annoying thing for me is weird starts for races. I’ve had races where people just say “Go,” they hold us for way too long, or (my personal favorite) the race starter uses a CANNON to start instead of a regular gun.
I LOVE cheesecake. It’s definitely a special treat for me.

Reply

My husband was driving us home the afternoon after I ran a marathon that morning, and my garmin told me to “move.” I literally almost threw it out of the car :0

Reply

I carry a tiny thing of vaseline while racing, and I definitely saved a stranger from chafed nipples! Oy. I cannot even imagine. Thanks goodness for sports bras!

Falling is such an annoying runner thing. Well, maybe not for everyone, but for me. Ugh. I had to wear a boot twice last year when I fell and sprained my ankle and I have fallen once already this year, but thankfully it was more of a slide and I just skinned my knees and hand.

You have the nicest neighbors! I always try and bring a little something over to new neighbors and whenever I am making a treat for my family, I try and make extra so we can share :)

I am not a fan of sweet cheese so no cheesecake for me.

Reply

Yes the injuring yourself while running is the most frustrating thing ever lol. IT band issues crop up when I hit the half marathon distance…
I looove cheesecake. The fruit topping is the best. Not so much into chocolate or caramel cheesecake.

Reply

Going along with annoying injuries … Tendonitis is the WORST. I’m supposed to be training for Boston and sidelined a bit with peroneal tendonitis. Going to physical therapy and doing everything I can to heal but not feeling great about racing this spring. Any tips/tricks for healing tendonitis fast?! And have you trained for a marathon in 6-8 weeks? Not going for time at this point but just want to be able to enjoy the race pain free!

Reply

OMG it is so funny Andrew thinks the treadmill is off!! I keep saying that as well. We have an X11i (model down from yours I think) and i swear it tells me I am way slower then what I normally am but I can’t figure out how to calibrate the darn thing. Please share if you guys ever attempt that! lol
