Christmas Came Early & Weekend Recap

Happy Monday!  Not sure what I ate during my run that got stuck in my teeth but I’m guessing it was from my jam that I had on my toast that morning.

On Monday’s I’ll start recapping more about our entire weekend since I’m keeping my Sunday posts short now.

20.56 REALLY happy miles (besides a few miles in the beginning when I was just feeling the previous 60 miles that week on my legs).

Maybe the run partly went so well because I had a new watch!  Christmas came early for me this year:).   Andrew needed a new Garmin so he told me to get the new Fenix 6 and he would take my Garmin… how do you say no to that?  So far I am beyond obsessed with it, never want to take it off and will do a full review after another week or so.  There are definitely things about this watch that are going to help me (PacePro) on race day so I’m thrilled about that.

Here’s how the workout went:  2.6 mile warm-up, 4 miles @ 6:30ish (down in the beginning and then a little up and flat), 2 miles @ marathon effort on the trails as I climbed 445 ft (9:34, 8:24) and then back to marathon pace for 8 miles @ 6:35 average (including a mile going down on a road from the trail that I had climbed) and then I cooled down until the end.  I took one bathroom break at mile 2.6 and then kept the rest continuous besides one time to jump over a little fence to get back on the bike trail.   Starting at mile 6.6 I was alone (Emilee wasn’t there so I didn’t have anyone my same pace) for the rest of the run so I definitely used my music yesterday which was a nice change after not using it for so long.  I also just had so many things on my brain and kind of needed some time to really think which helped the miles tick by!

It’s been fun to set new records again on my watch:)

IMG 4665

I’m telling ya, these shorts are magical.  I just put water bottles and my gels in the pockets and didn’t even feel them the entire run.  The shorts don’t budge and I loved not stopping to get drinks/eat and just practicing my fueling/hydration during the faster miles.

PS the Hyperion are not meant for the trails… it felt so weird to be in them on all of the rocks for those 2 miles but I just wanted them so bad for the rest of the run.

My marathon outfit is officially figured out (it’s so important to find the things that don’t rub you weird or annoy you for such a long race:  Hyperions, these balega socks, shorts I just talked about, this bra and the Runner’s Corner jersey in this post.

IMG 4662

I ended up just running right home and picked up my car later and without stopping much it meant I got home pretty much when everyone was just starting to get ready for the day.  With our coach we really haven’t done any goal marathon pace work so it was interesting to do it on Saturday!  6:35s felt pretty good and like I could hold them for a while (especially with a taper) so I’m thrilled about that.  It’s amazing how all of the really fast stuff he has had us do for shorter intervals translates over to marathon pace feeling much more comfortable and doable.

IMG 4731

We made egg burritos for breakfast and then went to the Farmers Market.  One of the booth’s had Dole Whip and it tasted just like Disneyland.  I also won a massage from a massage therapist clinic while we were there by spinning a wheel and about 7 seconds into the massage he said, ‘hmmmm your back is very tight… do you have any idea why that might be?’  I have a slight guess that might be a side effect of peak week.

Just the normal Saturday activities.

IMG 4763

Andrew went to Costco (we’ve decided that some errands we just need to divide and conquer rather than going all together;) and brought home a new Minnie blanket. She just kept kissing her face so I’ll take that as meaning she loves it.

IMG 4766

And then we had some people over for a movie night (you can find all of our projector stuff here) in our backyard.

IMG 4772

Sunday involved everyone sleeping in until 8:30 which felt amazing.  We made pancakes for breakfast and made it ON TIME to church which felt like an accomplishment.

Later on my family came over for Brooke’s bday party… scheduling things like this is hard between Brooke and Knox being gone with their other parents and my sister’s older kids being gone with their dad so we finally had a weekend with everyone here!

Brooke came out of her room in my old dress from when I was her age.  She called it her party dress.

IMG 4792

Brooke requested spaghetti for her birthday meal so we made this sauce and it was a hit.

IMG 4795

And of course we had cake too.

IMG 4803

PS we made a big batch of Mel’s Avocado Chicken Salad this weekend and it tastes so good on nachos.

IMG 4769

Toby sent me this on Friday night before my long run and it was exactly what I needed for these last few weeks of training!

Don’t quit till you have nothing left.

In the picture of the birthday cake Brooke looks just like Curly

Reply

I was just going to write that SAME thing :)

Reply

My first thought too!

Reply

I thought she did too especially in the pic with the grandparents. Curly’s twin!

Reply

YES…. they look more and more alike by the day. People automatically think they are sisters:) . I hope you all have a great day Betsy, Jocelyn, Amanda and Danielle!

Reply

Yes! For a split second I asked myself why you were taking a picture with Curly and not Brooke….oops. Looks like Brooke had a beautiful ? birthday

Birthday celebrations get harder as the kids get older, right? We managed a family dinner for my son’s actual birthday in July, but so many of his buddies were vacationing then that we are having his friend party this Friday–only 2 months late :) Oops! Never a bad time for a trampoline get together, is there?
I don’t have a go-to birthday dinner request, but if it were today (instead of the end of November), I would have loaded nachos! Maybe even with that avocado chicken salad–looks amazing!
Happy Monday!

Reply

Yes…. it really is getting harder to get everyone together. And you are so right… why not extend the partying and enjoy the trampoline all together:) . TRY THE chicken salad on nachos, it was heavenly. Thanks Corey and I hope your Monday is a great one too!

I love the picture of you and Brooke and her bright pink birthday cake. Tell her that I FULLY SUPPORT frosting being that pink!!

I admire you being able to run in the Energy bra. I need things that are–ahem–more high impact and that keep me a bit more ‘locked and loaded.’ Over the last couple of years the only bra that works well for me for running is the Rebound Racer from Brooks. I know over the next year or two they’re going through some big-time re-engineering of their sports bras and from what I heard from the Brooks Guru who supported the running store I no longer work at (aha! life update, but not really an important one…still in a big holding pattern…), Brooks is phasing out pretty much all of their bras bit by bit and then they’re going to re-introduce the same concepts (maybe w different names) over time with some new technologies and approaches to fabrication and design because of the trends that have worked well with competing brands. I’m interested to find out…AND interested for when my bra gets phased out so I can buy up all of the discounted stock. ;)

In general my favorite running outfit is something like this: speed up capris from lulu (or full length tights in the cooler months), essential tank in the summer/some long-sleeved, petite-length top from athleta in the cooler months…), balega socks (hidden comfort in the winter/silver in the summer), that sports bra, a running hat of some sort, and of course–my beloved Brooks sneakers. Since I have been running very little since January, I still have miles in my Ghost 11s, but I am itching to get my hands on a pair of Ghost 12s. Can’t justify it, and right now I don’t have the spare cash. But hopefully soon enough I will be back at it. :) Some things need to happen first, and other plans are being put in place, but I will get there. The roads are always there for me, and my feet serve me well. Other parts of me need to find a bit more stability, though. ;)

True story: I have never had Dole whip and I am envious of that picture of dessert.

When I was a kid I almost always asked for my mom’s baked ravioli for dinner. I loved it so much, but my dad didn’t really like it too much so my mom didn’t make it often. But it was one of my favorites. These days–as an adult–Tom is in charge of figuring out my birthday (and I am in charge of his). We like it that way. ;)

I hope you have a GREAT day out there! I love that your marathon outfit is already a done deal…love it!!!!

Reply

Oh I didn’t know that you weren’t at the store anymore! I also didn’t know about the change in their sports bras either. I get to go meet with them all this week so I’m excited to learn more! Sounds like the PERFECT race outfit. I hope those Ghost 12s come sooner than later for you! I need to mail you a dole whip. They are SO good. Now you have me craving some ravioli! Have a fabulous day Stephanie!

Reply

*gasp I’m tempted to rush to Brooks website and stock up on bras while supplies last. Their sports bras are my favorite and I haven’t really found any others that I like.

Favorite race outfit—this one always looks sleek—a Rabbit (the brand) crop hop top, black compression shorts, and black compression. It says FAST! ha ha

I don’t care about my birthday meal; I just want cake with ALL ALL ALL of the buttercream frosting and frosting flowers. :)
Brooke’s cake doesn’t have flowers, but it looks AMAZING! I’m sitting here at work wishing I could have a piece!!!

Ooooh, last running gear! Let me think! I like a lot of brands, but I’ve been on an Athleta kick lately. I love their Salutation Stash tights. I just got a pair on sale in a funky lavender color that I wore to yoga on Saturday—cute and comfy! I have a new Athleta running bra that I love, too. https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=486074012&cid=1081437&pcid=1038916&grid=pds_7_219_1#pdp-page-content

Have the BEST Monday, Janae!

Oh I LOVE Rabbit gear… their stuff really does all look fast. Okay, that bra is fabulous. I want it now too and I love the colors. I need to go shopping with you:) . I hope you get some buttercream frosting soon. Thanks Jen, you too! I hope your school year is off to the best start!

How TTS are the Senita shorts? I want to try a pair but I can’t decide which size to get haha. The pockets look awesome!
I seriously can’t believe how big Brooke is now! <3

Reply

Hey Mollie! I think they are pretty true to size… I have a size small and that is what I wear in most shorts or I wear a 4/6! I hope you love them too:) . Thanks so much Mollie!

Reply

What size are you wearing in the Senita shorts? Do you have a coupon code for us? :)

Reply

Hey Joy!! I am wearing a size small! I’m usually a 4/6 in most brands! I wish… I emailed them and they told me they don’t have any of those programs set up yet for influencers so hopefully they will soon though. Have the best day!

Reply

That is a good looking watch ? I’d wear that everyday! I remember geeking out over the Forerunner 305! Garmin has come such a long way. Can you imagine what the Garmin will be like when your kiddos are your age??!!!

Those shorts looks awesome! I am a huge fan of pockets that work the way they should. I’m too self conscious to wear shorts so I’m more of a capri girl. Do you know anyone who has tried Senita capris or even pants? If so I’d love any thoughts!!?!?!

Oh how sweet is Skye and her new blanket! ❤️❤️❤️

Aww Brooke looks like a little doll in your old dress! Love it! Your mom is rocking that striped shirt! I’m obsessed! Where did she get that top?

I get my favorite workout gear from you so I’m no help lol. For my birthday I like some kind of pasta maybe lasagna or ravioli. Anything baked with cheese is a winner. Everything is better with cheese! ?

My fall goal is to run a few 5k without stopping. My pace went from 15:xx to 12:xx! It’s progress, right? Oh the word progress reminds me of my favorite Lost quote- unrelated to anything else I’ve babbled:

“It only ends once, anything that happens before that is progress.”

Have a wonderful week Janae! Thank you for the daily motivation! ?

P.S. How do you find time to read all these comments? I can’t even keep up with my email! ?

Reply

Hahaha . I don’t keep up with my email but I LOVE the comments… it’s my favorite part of blogging. You are rocking it with your running Sydney, I am SO thrilled for you and I can’t wait for your non-stop 5k this fall! Hahah I’ve never thought about what Brooke’s future garmin will look like, I bet it is going to be incredible. I haven’t tried the Senita capris… can anyone help us out with this? My mom got her top a few years ago and can’t remember where but Nautica is the brand. LOVE that quote. Thank you so much and I love hearing from you! Have the best day.

Reply

I have a couple pairs of the Senita capris. I love them and the huge pockets! I think they fit pretty true to size. I personally like the high waisted one best because they stay up better, but that might just be for me and my muffin top!

Reply

Laura!!! Thank you sharing!!! I’m so excited to try them! I lean towards high waisted capris too. Thanks to babies and weight fluctuation lol.

Janae.. is there an affiliate link I can use ? Hi ❤️ to give back by clicking affiliate links !

You are seriously the best! I don’t currently have one but hopefully I will in the future! Have a great night!

So much goodness in this post! I’m impressed with your mileage! Shoot – I’m impressed with your running in general! And that watch … WOW! Love! Brook looks so happy in all of these birthday pics! So cool :)
My favorite and most recent purchased running outfit is here:

combined with turtle crew socks and my Sky Mountain trucker.
I think it’s my favorite outfit because I had the best race in it! I will always remember those trails and my feels when I look at that outfit.
Birthday meals: totally depends on how I feel. This year I had Cafe Rio’s pork salad for lunch and phad thai for dinner. So good!!!!
Have a great day!

Reply

Thank you so much Jenny! Okay, CUTEST outfit. I need those Salomon shorts in the yellow right now. Off to copy you:) . It really is so so cute. Sounds like the perfect day of birthday eating. Thanks Jenny, you too!

Where is your mustard dress from? I have been looking for one for family pictures (not sure I can pull it off with blonde hair but I want to see). Thank you!

HEY ABBY!! It is from Roolee and I’m sure it will look incredible on you! Take a look at all of their dresses… they have the best stuff with great prices!

13 days until my marathon! I had to cut this mornings run short because my hip flexor was super sore but I feel like these things always crop up in the taper!?!

Reply

YES YES YES!! That happened to me last year before St. George… I kept cutting runs short and ended up having the perfect day just like you will in 13 days. Cheering SO loud for you! I want to hear all about it:)

Reply

Okay that makes me feel loads better that it happened to you too!

Reply

Do not worry for a minute, what you are feeling is very normal for the taper. In my experience… a bad taper = an incredible race. You’ve got this!

My birthday meal just needs to be something I don’t cook!

New gear = Suunto 9 watch. I’ve had it for a little over a month now and really love it. I also finally bought a Road ID (https://www.roadid.com) I bought the Apple Watch ID and it fits my watch perfectly – I don’t even notice it’s there. So much easier than grabbing my driver’s license every time I head out for a run or ride.

Reply

I need to get one of those Road IDs… thank you for reminding me! Hahah I agree… not cooking is the best present out there:) . I am SO happy you are loving your Suunto 9… keep enjoying it. Have a beautiful day Kathy!

Reply

I looooooooove Dole Whip and ate so much of it when I was back in Hawaii. I have looked up recipes for homemade Dole Whip and man I need to try that stuff.

Sounds like an awesome run, and agreed on road shoes not being ideal for trails haha. I have made that mistake.

Reply

Oh if you find a homemade recipe, let me know! Hahah yep… not a mistake I want to make again. I hope you are having a great morning friend!

Reply

I ordered those shorts in a longer length, they should be delivered today. I can’t wait to try them out. My husband got me the Garmin 645 music for our anniversary last week. I love it! I don’t usually run with music but I like that I have the option now. Also loving all the “new” records I keep breaking with a new watch. I usually request sushi for my birthday dinner but tacos or any other kind of seafood would do too.

Reply

Let me know what you think of the shorts and YES…. the music is one thing I’m really excited about in case I need some music those final miles of the marathon. Happy anniversary and your husband did great with his gift:) . I agree with all of your bday meal requests hahaha. Enjoy your day Corrinne!

Reply

I usually prefer racing in a sports bra and shorts if it’s hot, and for cooler races I go for a tank top and arm warmers.
41 days until my marathon!!

Reply

FORTY ONE DAYS AHHH Loribeth, I am so so excited for you!

Reply

You’ve got me looking and wanting to try the senita brand of clothing! I’m a die hard Lulu speed shorts girl but since they changed them a couple years ago to speed up I think I need to start looking for something different.

I really like the new Garmin fenix but they don’t have a newer version of the sapphire rose gold in the 54mm watch size which I’m obsessed with. I’m just a huge fan of giant watches. I’ll rock my fenix 3 until it dies.

Reply

And the price on these ones are so much cheaper. I hope you like them if you try them out. OH I LOVE the giant watch look too. The fenix 3 is beautiful… keep on enjoying it. Hope your day is a really great one:)

Reply

I can’t wait to read your review on the watch! I have had my eye on that one. I am ready to be done with my Apple watch and go over to garmin!
I NEVER wear shorts running or races! I am a die-hard fan for Lululemon running crops and a tank! I love the tanks that a little open in the back and lets in all that cool air!
I love ethnic food so some good Thai or Vietnamese is always great on my birthday and home-made gluten free cake and yummy frosting is a MUST!!
About 40 days from my next race, only a 5 miler then 10 weeks out from my half!!!

Reply

Ohhhh I can’t wait to write all about it. I am seriously so obsessed with it. Oh those lulu tanks are some of my favorites too! No I am craving Thai. GOOD LUCK on your 5 miler and half… I’m cheering for you big time Jarrelle!

Reply

Skye’s obsession with minnie is so funny! she is so loyal to it hahahah I wonder where this came from ???

this morning I thought of a new lil run motto! I used to go to a therapist who had a sign in her office that said something like “the only way out is through it” — so I kept saying to myself this morning on my run , the only way out is through!

I would choose pizza for a birthday meal!
i just bought a bunch of clothes from the sale section of old navy! everything was $2-$16 ! also pro-compression is doing their grab bag of marathon socks 3 for $40 so I grabbed those too! (usually they’re like $40 each!)

Reply

It’s weird because Brooke was the SAME way with Minnie. It must be in their DNA haha. Oh my goodness, I will be using that motto big time… mind if I share that? I love it. You scored with that sale wahooo! Enjoy your Monday Krista!

of course you can !

That Fenix 6 looks great! I’m really loving my 245, but I still haven’t tried the music bit yet. This is my newest gear.
I love my 6″ Inknburn shorts and the matching tanktop. I bought them three years ago and they’re still going strong. I love the pockets in the shorts. I can’t put a water bottle in them, but a gel or 2, my Phone and keys fit in easily. I have a 10 k this Friday evening, and I’m trying to decide between shorts that are nice and cool, but sometimes chafe and the 6″ shorts.
What do you think about the Garmin race time prediction? The times it gives me now for 5 and 10 k look really ambitious to me. Friday night I’ll know more. My goal is to get quite close to the starting line so I don’t have to pass so many people. (Not that I’m fast, but it’s three loops around town, and some spots are quite narrow.) I did a test run on the loop yesterday and it went really well. I know the way around the course, so I’ve never done that before, but it was a real confidence booster.
Favorite birthday food would be chocolate cake made by my mom.
I love the pictures of your family. Have a great day!

Reply

Let me know if you like the music on there… I’m excited to try it! So happy you are loving it! I looked up Inknburn shorts and they are SO CUTE! The pockets sound perfect! GOOD LUCK ON FRIDAY!!! So far my race time predictions are WAY off so I’m not really sure… Keep me updated and let me know how the race goes (you are going to rock it) and if the race time prediction is close for you! Have a fabulous day!

Reply

The picture with you and Brooke with her cake, I can see your niece Curly in her.

Reply

I can’t wait to see your review on the Fenix 6. I currently have the 3 and was thinking of upgrading to the 5s plus mostly for the music and wrist based heart rate training. I had no idea a 6 was even coming out! So I’m just curious if it’s worth skipping the 5?? What did you have prior to this one?

Have a great day!!

Reply

What bottles do you use in those shorts? I bought those shorts on your recommendation and they are fabulous! But I didn’t even think to try bottles in them.

oh that makes me so happy! Try these out and i hope you don’t feel them either:
